At the start of the season, we here at HOOPD HD adopted the Grand Canyon Antelopes as our “Team of the People” and began a campaign to get them eligible for the NCAA Tournament. The case for why they should be eligible can be found here. But it has not been enough. January is almost over and the ‘Lopes are still not yet postseason eligible. So, we have gone another step. Tonight, the ‘Lopes will be attempting to keep their perfect WAC record intact against one of the conference’s top teams, the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield. GCU enters play with an amazing overall record of 18-2, 5-0 in WAC play. They are led by Dewayne Russell, Joshua Braun and Grandy Glaze. Braun was dominant in a win this weekend at UMKC, scoring 31 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. If he can be anything close to that good tonight, the ‘Lopes should be in a strong position to pick up yet another victory.
Bakersfield presently sits at 14-6 overall, 4-1 in conference play. The Roadrunners are coming off their first conference loss of the season this past weekend, a double overtime home loss to New Mexico State. Aly Ahmed led the ways in that game for his team, scoring 12 points while pulling down 15 boards. Ahmed is a serous double-double threat every game and the Lopes will need to find a way to contain him if they want to win the game tonight . . . and further strengthen their cause for getting that elusive #LopesWaiver!
