All-Access at the CAA Tournament: 2nd Round Saturday

Conference tournaments are about basketball but also so much more: the fans, parents, bands, cheerleaders, etc. The CAA Tournament is taking place this weekend in Washington, DC, and we could not be more excited to be there in person! HoopsHD will be covering all the angles so you can look forward to an abundance of articles in the days ahead. Jon Teitel continues our coverage with a recap of the 2nd round quadruple-header on Saturday.

Much like the rainy weather outside, the food selections today were a bit dreary. Flatbread pizzas for lunch were too much bread/not enough toppings, and while hot dog/burger for dinner was fine they ran out of dessert. Let’s tip it off:

GAME #1: Campbell-Monmouth
The Camels built a very early 17-8 lead and then Monmouth went on a very big run to take a 46-31 halftime lead thanks to the outside shooting of Abdi Bashir/Jack Collins and the inside shooting of Klemen Vuga (whose name must be Slovenian for “layup machine”. Campbell star G Anthony Dell’Orso tried to bring his team back in the 2nd half by knocking down several shots but the Hawks just had too much depth on offense (with 6 different players finishing in double-figures) as Monmouth won 90-67 and will face Charleston on Sunday afternoon. I missed the postgame press conference to complete a pair of interviews: you’re welcome.

GAME #2: William & Mary-Towson
I did not think the Tribe would have anything left in the tank after their quick turnaround but they looked great in the 1st 20 minutes. JR Gabe Dorsey did what he always does (make threes) and SO Chase Lowe continued his whale of a weekend by converting several layups. Most of Towson’s starters could not make a shot to save their lives but Nendah Tarke picked up the slack with a layup/jumper/floater in the lane, and Tomiwa Sulaiman subbed in to make a pair of 3-PT shots but William & Mary was still able to hang on for a 30-29 halftime lead. Tigers SR leader Charles Thompson saved the season in the 2nd half with several layups/jump shots as Towson won 67-56 and will play UNCW on Sunday afternoon.
I usually just try to summarize what the coach said in the postgame press conference…but Towson coach Pat Skerry is not your usual coach, which is why he answered my question by talking about HoopsHD with this stare in my direction:

You can see it all for yourself starting with my question at the 1:25 mark: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRSYXrq07jM

GAME #3: Northeastern-Stony Brook
I knew that it was going to be a weird game after the 1st 12 seconds when Stony Brook G Tyler Stephenson-Moore: banked in a 3. Several minutes later his backcourt mate Aaron Clarke made a 3 to beat the shot-clock/got fouled/made the FT to complete the 4-PT play. Meanwhile, their fellow G Dean Noll made a ton of jump shots but the prettiest of all was a behind-the-back dribble leading to a step-back 3 from the top of the key. The good news for the Seawolves is that their guard play was good enough for a 35-29 halftime lead. The possible bad news is that their band/cheerleaders missed their great performance because they did not show up until halftime: would they jinx everything in the 2nd stanza?! Not so much, as the 3-headed monster mentioned above kept on scoring and almost combined to outscore the Huskies themselves (63 PTS on 9-20 3PM) as Stony Brook won it 75-65 and will play Drexel on Sunday night.
In the postgame press conference I asked Noll how it felt to finally win a postseason game: he has been playing college basketball since 2018 but his only 2 postseason appearances while at Cornell were a loss at Robert Morris in the 2019 CIT and a loss to Princeton in the 2022 Ivy tourney semifinals. He smiled and admitted that it felt great, and he is looking forward to playing again tomorrow so he can hopefully have the same feeling:

GAME #4: Hampton-Delaware
I am sure that it was a great game…but after attending 5 games in 30 hours I am calling it a wrap for today, check back tomorrow for the quarterfinal quadruple-header as the top seeds finally take the court.

All-Access at the CAA Tournament: HoopsHD interviews Charleston/Monmouth basketball parents Jack & Kathleen Miller

Conference tournaments are about basketball but also so much more: the fans, parents, bands, cheerleaders, etc. The CAA Tournament tips off this week in Washington, DC, and we could not be more excited to be there in person! HoopsHD will be covering all the angles so you can look forward to an abundance of articles in the week ahead. Jon Teitel continues our coverage with an interview of Charleston/Monmouth basketball parents Jack & Kathleen Miller.

Kathleen: you played soccer at Monmouth, so how good a player were you back in the day, and how has the sport changed from then to now? I was a tough player but the girls now have more skill. We were ranked as high as 17th in the nation due to our toughness. The game has changed 100% and is not as physical now.

Jack: you were a D-1 women’s basketball coach at Monmouth/Seton Hall/Rider, so how much of an impact did you have on your sons’ basketball skills? I remember coaching them starting when they were in 1st grade. I coached them as much as I could but at some point you have to let others take over. 1 of the women’s basketball players I recruited to Monmouth was Christie Pearce, but she later decided to focus on soccer (where she won 3 Olympic gold medals and 2 World Cups)!

Your older son Jack plays was a walk-on/scout team member as a freshman at Charleston: how excited were you when he had made the roster last season/got a full scholarship this season? I cannot even put it into words. We were so happy for him because he works so hard…and now has fewer student loans! It just does not happen that often and took us totally by surprise: we were so thankful to the coaching staff and it was a dream come true for him.

Your younger son Corey is a freshman at Monmouth: how big a deal was it when he made the 1st basket of his career last month vs. North Carolina A&T? We were screaming! It was cool because he works hard too..and does not have a bad-looking shot!

Kathleen: wou are a school principal and have spent your professional life working in education, so what have you taught your boys about balancing their work on the court with their work in the classroom? You have to work hard at both because ast some point basketball will come to an end. Fortunately, we never had to worry about them because they have such a huge work ethic and are still making dean’s/presidents’s lists. We balanced it all while they were growing up so we do not have to get on them now: sports kept them in check and taught them a schedule from the get-go.

What is the best part of being a “basketball parent”, and what is the not-so-best part (if any)? The best part is just seeeing them so happy and loving what they are doing…although Sunday might not be the best part! We have memories of watching them play basketball from middle school up to now and doing something they are passionate about, and now my husband can just enjoy it without having to worry about coaching them.

Each of your kids’ teams played 31 regular-season games this year: how many were you able to make it to in person?
We went to 3 games for Jack and were able to make it to most of Corey’s home games. We have to thank ESPN+/FloSports because we have just as much fun watching the games at home: I think that we saw every single game either at home or in person.

You are in a unique situation as a parent as both of your sons will be playing in the CAA tourney: are you planning to spend all week just watching every single 1 of your kids’ games? Oh yeah: we even got a hotel directly in between their team hotels! We will be here until the end: we were here last year and it was an unbelievable exprience.

Your sons faced each other in January when the Cougars had an 11-PT win over the Hawks: was that a dream come true for you, and what on earth will you do when they face each other again in DC on Sunday?! I think that it was a dream come true: we could never have planned for it so it was unbelievable to watch. Our social meda was blowing up and both coaches were really getting into it by getting them into the game at the end and telling them to go after each other. You do not see it everyday and we were lucky to have that situation take place in front of 10,000 fans.

Any predictions for the son vs. son game? I just want them to have fun. Either way we win…and either way we lose, so may the best team win. Coach Kelsey has won the CAA for 2 years in a row but Coach Rice has also kept his guys in the mix this year.

All-Access at the CAA Tournament: HoopsHD interviews William & Mary band member Peyton Boggs

Jon Teitel continues our coverage with an interview of William & Mary band member Peyton Boggs.

You are from Richmond, VA: what made you choose William & Mary? I liked the small-campus feel and the people within it: everyone is really nice and it is a great community to be part of.

You are majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Math: why did you choose those subjects? I love problem-solving and it is fun for me. I took a computer class in high school and liked it: my father/grandfather are also into computers. Math is very connected to computer science and the classes cross over a lot so it was easy to add the minor.

You have a 3.9 GPA: how are you able to balance your work on the court with your work in the classroom? 1 thing I love about the band is that it is non-committal. Other schools’ bands practice all the time and you have to attend all the games…but we are not like that. A lot of people wanted to go home for spring break this week, and when you have to prioritize class you can do so without any problems.

You play the trumpet in the William & Mary Pep Band: how long have you been playing that instrument, and what is your favorite song to play? I started playing the trumpet in 6th grade so I guess this is my 9th year. My favorite song to play is “Bang Bang” by Jessie J (featuring Ariana Grande/Nicki Minaj).

You are also a social chair: what does that involve? Bringing the band to social events is something that we have been lacking over the past 18 months. We got to play at a fraternity party and we also have an intramural handball team: we won our 1st game but then lost in the playoffs.

As an Eagle Scout you performed some gardening at a retirement home: how much importance do you place on community service? It is great to help out other people, especially those who cannot help themselves, but it has been hard for me to find such opportunities in college.

You work part-time at Panera Bread: what is your favorite item on the menu? The kitchen sink cookie, which has chocolate/nuts/caramel.

You did a TEDTalk on the future of working from home: what was your conclusion? I think it is the future, especially in the computer science field. I want to go to an office and share a workplace with others…but it will probably only be for 1/2 the week.

Your basketball team lost 22 games this season: is it harder to be in the band when the team is not playing that well on the court? No: there is definitely an underdog mentality that a lot of people enjoy. We have won 2 straight so it is fun to be hot! Chase Lowe was unbelievable for us yesterday so to win games when you do not expect it is great.

Any predictions for today’s game vs. Towson? Tribe win! We are hot and I like our starting lineup. We lost to Towson in the regular season…but we also lost to North Carolina A&T (who we beat yesterday) so I think that we are in a good spot to pull off an upset.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Saturday, March 9th

NEWS AND NOTES:

– As mentioned on last night’s podcast, Mike Hopkins will be moving on from Washington at the end of the season, although he will remain as coach during the Pac-12 Tournament this season.

– Dayton needed overtime, but the Flyers outlasted VCU 91-86 in overtime at Dayton. This will likely net the #3 seed for Dayton in the A-10 Tournament and also locks up the #4 seed for UMass. VCU will be the #5 seed and will get a bye into the second round of the tournament.

– The biggest winner on the court last night was Boise State – the Broncos have now netted a season sweep of the Aztecs and could potentially be a first ballot team when the Selection Committee begins their meetings next week.

SURVIVAL BOARD WATCH:

BIG WEST:

– Cal State-Fullerton: out with a loss (vs UC-Irvine) or a Bakersfield win (at Hawai’i)

– Cal State-Bakersfield: out with a loss (at Hawai’i) and a Fullerton win (vs UC Irvine)

WAC:

– California Baptist: possibly out with a loss (vs Grand Canyon) and a Utah Tech win (at SFA); however, the WAC uses a resume based seeding system so final word will be needed from the league.

SWC:

– Alabama State: out with a loss (vs Grambling) or wins by both Alabama A&M (vs Southern) and UAPB (at Alcorn State).  If Alabama State wins and one or both or AAMU and UAPB lose, one of the three will be eliminated via a scoring margin tiebreaker between the tied teams.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

– ARKANSAS AT ALABAMA (ESPN). The Crimson Tide had a slip-up at Florida earlier in the week, but are expected to rebound at home against Arkansas on Senior Day. Losing this one might potentially endanger a protected seed for the Tide.

– MEMPHIS AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC (CBS). This is a pivotal game in the American conference standings and there is a heightened sense of urgency for both teams. FAU is coming off of a road win at North Texas, but Memphis appears to be back on the rails after a catastrophic month of January.

– GEORGETOWN AT ST. JOHN’S (FOX). This is the last of what will be a conference buy game for the Johnnies, so they best not lose this one against a Georgetown team that has only managed a pair of wins against DePaul in conference play.

– IOWA STATE AT KANSAS STATE (ESPN2). Iowa State has already sewn up a perfect record at home and are looking to potentially vault up to the 2-line with a win today and a solid performance in the Big 12 Tournament. K-State has lost 5 out of their last 7 and are likely a solid NIT team.

– OKLAHOMA AT TEXAS (ESPN). This will be the Big 12 swan song for both teams, but the Red River Rivalry will continue in the SEC next season. The winner will reach the .500 mark in conference play; the loser will be 8-10 instead.

– WEST VIRGINIA AT CINCINNATI (ESPN+). Cincinnati is likely in a position where they need to get to at least the Big 12 championship game to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, but they cannot overlook a West Virginia team where they already had a 2nd half collapse and a loss earlier this season.

– TEXAS A&M AT OLE MISS (CBS). Both teams are likely NIT bound at this point, but seeding in the SEC Tournament is still at stake for both teams today.

– CREIGHTON AT VILLANOVA (FOX). There is a lot more urgency for Villanova on Senior Day, but the Wildcats were one of two teams (Butler being the other) that have managed wins at Creighton earlier in the season. This could also be a preview of the late-night Big East quarterfinal round.

– SOUTH CAROLINA AT MISSISSIPPI STATE (SEC Network). Mississippi State’s postseason hopes are also in peril following a 3-game losing streak; they now have to go up against a South Carolina team that is coming off of a home loss against Tennessee.

– RICHMOND AT GEORGE MASON. The Spiders have already clinched the #1 seed in the A-10 Tournament, but can now clinch the outright regular season crown with a win at George Mason. The Spiders might make the NCAA Tournament without winning the auto bid, but they best not mess around against a GMU team that has already beaten Dayton at home.

– SOUTH FLORIDA AT TULSA (ESPN+). While the Bulls are locked and loaded into the top seed in the American conference tournament, USF realistically needs to win every game prior to the American championship game to garner at-large consideration.

– KANSAS AT HOUSTON (ESPN). A win for the Cougars today would clinch the outright Big 12 title in their inaugural season; a Houston loss and an Iowa State win would result in co-champions for the league.

– KENTUCKY AT TENNESSEE (CBS). While Tennessee has already clinched the SEC regular season title outright, the Vols are playing for a #1 seed today. Kentucky is playing for a possible protected seed themselves today.

– COLORADO STATE AT AIR FORCE. Huge Front Range stakes for today’s game; a Colorado State loss would open the door for Wyoming to win the Front Range. Oh, and there’s the little thing of the Rams potentially endangering their NCAA hopes with a loss today as well.

– FLORIDA AT VANDERBILT (SEC Network). While Vandy has shifted to baseball mode among their fanbase, the Gators are further trying to solidify a seed in the top half of the NCAA bracket.

– MARQUETTE AT XAVIER (FOX). Marquette will play at least one more game without Tyler Kolek in the lineup – should the Golden Eagles stumble today and his health remain up in the air, this would be a bad sign for Marquette’s seeding. For Xavier, this is one final opportunity to at least beat a protected seed caliber team and a tuneup for the Big East Tournament that they must win at this point to avoid missing the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in 6 years.

– COLORADO AT OREGON STATE (Pac-12 Network). Colorado already won the first leg of the Oregon roadtrip against the Ducks; they cannot completely overlook the Beavers since OSU already beat Utah at home earlier this week.

– UCF AT TCU (ESPN+). The Horned Frogs also need to win on Senior Day to feel safe about their NCAA chances, but could also vault into the top half of the bracket today should they win today along with at least one Big 12 Tournament win.

– BAYLOR AT TEXAS TECH (ESPN2). Baylor is another contender for a 2-line seed and could put themselves in a great position with a road win at Tech today. We can only hope Tech fans will be better behaved then they were when Texas came to town a few days earlier.

– CLEMSON AT WAKE FOREST (ACC Network). Wake may as well start preparing to host NIT games after a last-second home loss against Georgia Tech. The Tigers are realistically looking like a 5-seed or a 6-seed after some recent slides in the ACC.

– NORTH CAROLINA AT DUKE (ESPN). Nothing to see here. Carry on.

– GEORGIA AT AUBURN (SEC Network). Auburn is also trying to earn a protected seed in the NCAA Tournament and need to avoid a stumble against their old rival Georgia.

– UTAH AT OREGON (Pac-12 Network). Realistically, both teams are looking like they’ll be sent packing to the NIT and could potentially meet up there in a rematch (if not in the Pac-12 Tournament depending on seeding).

– NC STATE AT PITTSBURGH (CW). Our last regular season matchup on the CW Network will be a very pivotal game for Pittsburgh; they need a win tonight and likely multiple ACC Tournament wins if they’re going to make the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season.

– UCONN AT PROVIDENCE (FOX). There’s a lot at stake for Providence in this regional Big East rivalry, but don’t expect UConn to be any less motivated themselves as they potentially fight for the #1 overall seed in the NCAAs.

– GEORGIA TECH AT VIRGINIA (ACC Network). The Yellow Jackets have a knack for pulling upset after upset in the ACC and are a team nobody wants to play in that conference tournament. Virginia has had a horrible 3 weeks and best not be taking this game for granted.

– NEW MEXICO AT UTAH STATE (CBS Sports Network). Utah State has already clinched the #1 seed in the Mountain West Tournament, but they can clinch the outright regular season crown with a win tonight.

– DEPAUL AT SETON HALL (FS1). Seton Hall gets a conference buy game before warming up for the Big East Tournament.

– OKLAHOMA STATE AT BYU (ESPN+). A rare buy game-quality game in the Big 12 here, so BYU should enter the Big 12 Tournament on a winning note.

– MINNESOTA AT NORTHWESTERN (BTN). A final tuneup for both teams going into the B1G Tournament in Minneapolis. Northwestern is in like Flynn, but Minnesota needs to win the B1G Tournament regardless. Still, they have a wing and a prayer.

– ARIZONA AT USC (ESPN). We’re running out of ESPN/Pac-12 After Dark with Bill Walton on the call. Arizona has already clinched the Pac-12 regular season crown outright and remain in contention for a #1 seed in the NCAAs.

– UNLV AT NEVADA (CBS Sports Network). The Silver State rivals end the Mountain West regular season with a bang – will the red-hot Rebels continue their winning ways and potentially steal an auto bid out of the Mountain West?

All-Access at the CAA Tournament: 1st Round Friday

Conference tournaments are about basketball but also so much more: the fans, parents, bands, cheerleaders, etc. The CAA Tournament is taking place this weekend in Washington, DC, and we could not be more excited to be there in person! HoopsHD will be covering all the angles so you can look forward to an abundance of articles in the days ahead. Jon Teitel continues our coverage with a recap of the 1st round doubleheader on Friday.

I was not even sure if they would feed us during the 1st round games but it was delicious AND healthy: gourmet chicken Caesar salad with multiple veggies and 2 kinds of dressing! Let’s tip it off:

GAME #1: William & Mary vs. North Carolina A&T
North Carolina A&T has a very balanced offense and it showed during the 1st 20 minutes as big men Nikolaos Chitikoudis/Evan Joyner made a ton of layups/scoops while SG Landon Glasper made everything else including a pair of threes. William & Mary SG Gabe Dorsey already set a school record this year with 104 3PM in 1 season and continued his hot shooting with a trio of trifectas in the 1st half to help his team build a 35-30 halftime lead. Aggie FR Jalal McKie tried to keep his team in it by himself as he made multiple jumpers/layups but it is hard to win when you score ZERO bench PTS (due in large part to multiple injured players). Dorsey and his backcourt mate Trey Moss kept knocking down threes all afternoon, combining to make 8 while their opponents only made 3-19. The star of the day was Tribe SO Chase Lowe, as the 6’5” SO converted multiple and-1 opportunities and put up a sensational stat line of 18 PTS/16 REB/6 AST (becoming only the 6th player in the nation this year to reach those numbers!) in addition to 2 BLK/2 STL on defense while playing only 31 minutes as his team cruised to a 79-62 win and a date with Towson on Saturday afternoon.

In the postgame press conference I asked Lowe if that was the best performance of his career. He agreed that it was, “especially with the win on top of that,” as he was able to get his teammates involved while scoring as well.

I told W&M coach Dane Fischer that I could not believe that Lowe did all that while standing just 6’5”. He chuckled and confirmed that Lowe is 1 of the most unique players he has ever coached. He is “a winner who has winning qualities,” just plays to his identity, and is terrific at getting to the foul line.

GAME #2: Hampton-Elon
The Hampton crowd won the award for best vocal support of the day. When 6’9” FR Jerry Deng scored a basket (which included a pair of dunks and a corner 3 in the 1st 20 minutes) the fans would start chanting “JERRY, JERRY!”: love it! The Pirates finished dead-last in the conference this year but perhaps they were saving their best for the postseason as they took a 34-24 halftime lead into the locker room. Elon refused to throw in the towel, as JR big man Sam Sherry dominated the paint including a REB/tip-in to give his team a 52-51 lead with 4:16 left. The game went back and forth in the final 4 minutes, and his teammate TK Simpkins drilled a 3 with 25 seconds left to retake the lead 55-54. Hampton huddled up with 7.9 seconds left to draw up the final play and some of their guys were screaming at each other. Pirate SO Kyrese Mullen had missed the previous 4 games with a shoulder injury but finished his triumphant return by banking in a short jumper with 6.3 seconds left to take a 56-55 lead. The Phoenix brought the ball up court and got the ball to FR Isaac Harrell but he missed a 3 at the buzzer, so it is Hampton who will face Delaware on Saturday night.

In the postgame press conference I asked Mullen about both his shoulder and his game-winner. He confirmed that his shoulder was up to par but did not count it as a game-winner because is just put his team up 1. I hoped that Hampton coach Ed Joyner Jr. would share his secret for success in March, as he won 3 MEAC tourneys in a 6-year stretch from 2011-2016. He smiled because it seemed like those tourney wins came a long time ago and said the 2 keys are “understanding and expectations”: you need to have mental toughness because it is win-or-go-home:

That is a wrap for today but check back tomorrow for the 2nd round quadruple-header featuring both the #13 AND #14 seeds.
