Under the Radar Game of the Day – Saturday, March 2nd

Hofstra (19-11, 12-5) at Charleston (23-7, 14-3) – 2:00 PM ET (FloHoops)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to the Palmetto State for a CAA showdown between the Hofstra Pride and the Charleston Cougars. Hofstra comes into today’s game in a tie for 2nd place with the Drexel Dragons; the Pride have won four straight going into today’s game. Darlinstone Dubar scored 28 points for Hofstra in their last game, which was a 69-58 victory against UNC-Wilmington.

Charleston has already clinched the regular season title in the CAA; the Cougars are currently being projected as a 13 seed in most NCAA Tournament brackets. Charleston has won eight straight games since losing to UNC-Wilmington at home. Rayne Smith led Charleston with 32 points in a 96-73 victory at home against Campbell.

-Washington State held on against a sub-par USC team, but barely. They trailed for much of the game and had to go on a run in the second in order to pull it out 75-72. USC had several chances at a game-tying 3-pointer on their last possession, but couldn’t get it to fall.

-Gonzaga hasn’t looked good for the entire duration of the season, but they have looked really good over the past few weeks, and they got an impressive looking win last night against a pretty good San Francisco team. It’s not the kind of win that jacks up their resume, but it is an indicator that this team is playing at a higher level now than they had been prior to February.

-Nebraska, who has struggled on the road all year, fell on the road again at Ohio State 78-69. I think the Huskers are inside the bubble, but the lack of road wins will hurt their seed. It may be too little too late for Ohio State, but they have been playing exceptionally well since Chris Holtmann (who I like) was replaced as head coach.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-DAYTON AT LOYOLA CHICAGO (Atlantic 10). This will likely be a very tough road game for the Flyers. This game is a lot of things. It’s a litmus test to see how good Dayton is and whether or not they can beat a team that’s been playing really well on the road, and it impacts the conference race. If Dayton loses they will fall two games behind Richmond, and a game behind Loyola in the A10 standings.

Arkansas State @ Appalachian State (Sun Belt) – App State can still get on the bubble if they win this and avoid any early losses in the Sun Belt Tournament. A win today and they clinch 1st place in the SBC

Dartmouth @ Yale (Ivy League) – it’s still a three horse race in the Ivy League between Yale, Princeton, and Cornell

Cornell @ Penn (Ivy league) – see above^^^

-Columbia @ Princeton (Ivy League) – see above, and see furtther above^^^. Princeton is in a race for 1st place, and a loss eliminates Columbia

Harvard @ Brown (Ivy League) – this is not an elimination game, but it has major conference tournament implications as both teams are tied for the 4th place spot, which is the last team to get in

-James Madison @ Coastal Carolina (Sun Belt) – JMU is right on the bubble, but any loss between now and the conference championship game would knock them off of it

Eastern Kentucky @ Lipscomb (Atlantic Sun) – a win for EKU clinches them 1st place outright, but this is a tough road game against a talented Lipscomb team that is also trying to position themselves in the standings and earn home court advantage through the semifinals

Fresno State @ Nevada (Mountain West) – Nevada is solidly inside the bubble and will remain there so long as they continue to hold serve

Air Force @ Utah State (Mountain West) – Utah State is solidly inside the bubble and will remain there so long as they continue to hold serve

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Friday, March 1st

Fairfield (18-10, 12-5) at Marist (15-10, 10-6) – 7:00 PM ET (ESPNU)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day heads to Poughkeepsie, New York for a Metro Atlantic showdown between the Fairfield Stags and the Marist Red Foxes. Wins in six of their last seven games have allowed Fairfield to take a half-game lead over Quinnipiac in the conference standings despite trailing by three games at one point. Fairfield won their first meeting 82-61 against Marist; Caleb Fields led the Stags with 33 points in that victory.

Marist comes into tonight trailing by only a single game in the loss column against both Fairfield and Quinnipiac. The Red Foxes had won five straight games in conference play, but that winning streak was snapped in their last game after losing 69-60 on the road at Saint Peter’s. Marist has three of their final four games at home, but that lone road game will be played at Quinnipiac next Thursday.

Hoops HD Bracket Rundown – Feb 29th

NOTE:  This broadcast was recorded at 10pm, est on Thursday, February 29th.  No games that went final after that, particularly Gonzaga vs San Francisco, were considered when creating this bracket

Chad and the panel build a seedlist line by line and debate, discuss, and assess, and sometimes strongly argue about each team as they go.  Find out who they have on the #1 lines so far, who is safely in, who still has work to do, and who on the bubble just made it in and just missed it.

Below is a final copy of The Bracket, but don’t look at it until you’ve watched the show!!

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Tennessee and Auburn battled it out in Knoxville last night with Tennessee pulling out the big 92-84 win. Both teams are likely protected seeds and Tennessee is possibly within reach of a #1 seed. They also remain atop the SEC standings in a tie with Alabama. Speaking of the Tide…

-Alabama bounced back from their loss at Kentucky with a relly nice 103-88 win at Ole Miss. They look to be heading toward a protected seed if they can continue to hold serve.

-Providence is squarely on the bubble, and a win a Marquette could have skyrocketed them up the seedlist. They did not win at Marquette. Oh, no they did not. They were down 27-4 early and were never in the game at any point losing 91-69.

-South Carolina got a battle on the road against a Texas A&M team that desperately needed the win, but held on to win 70-68. South Carolina is knocking on the door of a protected seed whereas TAMU is falling further and further out of the picture.

-Northwestern picked up another true road win, which is their 4th of the year, as they knocked off Maryland 68-61. Their tournament profile is looking very solid right now.

-Butler has had a much better season than expected, and as recently as a week ago I was liking their chances to make the NCAA Tournament, but they were blown off their own court by a less than stellar Saint John’s team last night 82-59, and I just don’t think the Bulldogs are an NCAA team just yet. As a program they are definitely going in the right direction, and Thad Matta has done an outstanding job overall since taking over.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-NEBRASAKA AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten). Nebraska is just 2-7 in true road games, and they could really use another one to help strengthen their tournament profile. Ohio State has had an unspectacular year, but they’ve come to life lately with wins over Purdue and Michigan State, so it’s not a gimme game at all for the Huskers.

-GONZAGA AT SAN FRANCISCO (West Coast). This is actually a big game for the Zags. If they win this they are pretty solidly in the field, but if they don’t a case could be made to leave them out. They still don’t have very many good wins on their resume, and to date this would arguably (and perhaps not even arguably) be their second best overall win of the season. San Fran is a very impressive 14-1 at home, and they’ll be jacked way up for this one.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

Campbell @ Charleston (Coastal Athletic) – Charleston can clinch 1st place outright with a win

SEMO @ Morehead State (Ohio Valley) – Morehead State is still in the three way tie for first place with Little Rock and UT Martin and needs a win to keep pace

Tennessee Tech @ UT Martin (Ohio Valley) – see above ^^^^

Tennessee State @ Little Rock (Ohio Valley) – see above and above again ^^^^^

South Dakota State @ North Dakota (Summit League) – first place implications between the top two teams. South Dakota State can clinch it outright if they can pull off the win on the road

UTRGV @ Grand Canyon (WAC) – after two straight losses, the Lopes will now probably need the auto-bid to make the NCAA Tournament. They are tied with Tarleton State in the conference standings with just 3 games to go, so they need this one

Montana @ Eastern Washington (Big Sky) – Eastern Washington can clinch a share of 1st place with a win tonight

UC Irvine @ Cal State Northridge (Big West) – UC Irvine is in a 1st place tie with UCSD with just four games to go. They should be able to pick this one up on the road

USC @ Washington State (Pac 12) – Wazzu is in great shape and just needs to hold serve in this one. They should easily go into the field on the first ballot

Saint Mary’s @ Pepperdine (West Coast) – SMC remains unbeaten in league play and will likely land well inside the top half of the bracket if they continue to hold serve

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Thursday, February 29th

Bryant (17-11, 9-4) at UMass-Lowell (19-7, 10-3) – 6:30 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day heads to Lowell, Massachusetts for a matchup between the Bryant Bulldogs and the UMass-Lowell River Hawks. While Vermont has all but wrapped up the regular season title in the America East, Lowell is fighting to hold on to second place in the conference and subsequent home-court advantage for the first two rounds of the America East conference tournament. The River Hawks will also have a quick turnaround and travel to Vermont in their next game on Saturday afternoon. Ayinde Hikim leads the River Hawks with 15.3 points a game and 5.3 assists per game.

Likewise, a win tonight for Bryant will help to put them back in a tie for second place in the conference; should they lose tonight they would lose the tiebreaker to the River Hawks by virtue of being swept in the regular season. They also host NJIT and Albany to finish the year – at first glance it would appear to be an easy schedule, but they did lose at NJIT earlier this month. Sherif Gross-Bullock averages 18.7 points a game for the Bulldogs.
