Under the Radar (Feb 28th)

It’s the season finale of Under the Radar! Our Championship Week Video Notebooks begin this Sunday, so we aren’t going away, but this is the last UTR Video Podcast in this format. Tonight’s featured conference is the Metro Atlantic, which is one of the biggest logjams of any league with the top five teams all within one game of each other. Quinnipiac was seemingly running away with it, but they’ve hit a bit of a skid and teams like Fairfield, Marist, and Niagara are now coming on strong.

From there we move on to the other 21 UTR conferences and look at all the standings as we go into the final two weeks (and in some cases the final two days) of the regular season. Teams like Vermont, McNeese, High Point, and Samford have already clinched the top seeds. Grand Canyon, who seemed to be cruising through the WAC and was in position to get an at-large, had a rough week with two straight losses and is now looking like they’ll need the auto-bid. The Ivy League still has three really strong teams in Cornell, Yale, and Princeton, and we discuss Princeton’s chances of getting an at-large. We discuss all that, and more! And, as we do every week, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Wednesday, Feb 28th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Okay, so last night we had…(checks notes)…a fire alarm in Bloomington, a tornado at the Northwestern women’s game, a total of 33 points scored in the final two minutes of the Kentucky @ Mississippi State game, the top 3 teams in the MAC all lose, water bottles thrown on the court at Texas Tech, and probably some other stuff that I’m forgetting. But, so far as I know, we didn’t have any court stormings!!!

-BYU, who had struggled on the road all year long, went into one of the toughest road environments in the nation at Kansas, and somehow pulled off a very impressive and utterly jaw-dropping 76-68 win against the Jayhawks. This TOTALLY changes the look of BYU’s profile and should catapult them into the top half of the bracket.

-Kentucky, who looked fantastic in their home win against Alabama over the weekend, went on the road and after trailing for much of the game against a Mississippi State team that’s very tough to beat at home, came back, and after a flurry of scoring in the final couple of minutes, which included what appeared to be a game tying 3pt shot by Mississipp State to force overtime, hit a game winning shot at the buzzer for a 91-89 road win.

-San Diego State and Utah State sweated a little more than you would expect against weaker MWC opponents, but both held on to win.

-Pittsburgh had a lead at Clemson for much of the game, and it was one they really needed to win to make a case for themselves belonging inside the bubble, but Clemson got control late and held on for a 69-62 win.

-After a delay caused by fire alarms going off at Assembly Hall, Indiana managed to beat Wisconsin 74-70. Wisky is in no danger of missing the NCAA Tournament and Indiana has no real shot at making it, but Wisky just hasn’t looked the same for the past couple of weeks. This is a BAD loss, and I think it makes getting a protected seed very unlikely.

-Wake Forest, who had a big win against Duke over the weekend (in case you had forgotten), went on the road and lost to Notre Dame. It’s a huge step backward that almost completely offsets the huge step forward that they just took. They remain right no the bubble, and are perhaps outside of it.

-Texas pretty much dominated Texas Tech. It was very impressive to see them just blow the Red Raiders out of their own building. The final score was 81-69, but the actual game was a much more dominant performance. We also had a flagrant 2 called on Texas, to which the fans responded to by throwing plastic bottles onto the court, and that all but offset the flagrant foul with the technical fouls, but it had no impact on the final outcome.

-Nevada got another big road win as they held off Colorado State in another late night Mountain West thriller 77-74. The MWC seems to be leading the nation in exciting games this year.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-AUBURN AT TENNESSEE (SEC). Auburn is a team that has been good all year and who can add a massive season defining type of win to their resume tonight and put them on solid ground for a protected seed if they can somehow pull it off. Tennessee is still within reach of the #1 line, and in order to get there they pretty much need to win all their home games no matter how strong the opponent is.

-PROVIDENCE AT MARQUETTE (Big East). We all have Providence inside the bubble for now, but not entirely safe. A road win at Marquette, as improbable as that may be, would certainly make them a whole lot safer. Marquette looks to be a solid protected seed who could end up as high as the #2 line.

-NORTHWESTERN AT MARYLAND (Big Ten). Northwestern seems to be on their way to the NCAA Tournament so long as they can hold serve between now and the end of the regular season. A conference road win like this would strengthen their resume even more.

-OKLAHOMA AT IOWA STATE (Big 12). Oklahoma’s resume is a little flimsy, but they still seem to be in relatively good shape for a bid. If they could somehow pull off this upset they’d be in far better shape. Iowa State looks like a solid protected seed that continues to climb the seedlist.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT TEXAS A&M (SEC). TAMU has crashed into a mountain with four straight losses, and while two of those were against really strong opponents, the other two were certainly not. They’re outside the bubble and will need a strong finish just to get back into the field. South Carolina looks like they could end up as a protected seed. It’s never easy to win on the road, but they’ve shown they can do it.

-SAINT JOHN’S AT BUTLER (Big East). Both teams are outside the bubble both have work to do on top of winning this game, but having said that I think they both need this win to have any sort of a real chance.

-SETON HALL AT CREIGHTON (Big East). Both teams are inside the bubble, but Creighton is pushing a protected seed whereas Seton Hall is probably in the bottom half of the bracket for now, but they have some really nice wins and can certainly play their way up if they can pick this one up tonight.

-MINNESOTA AT ILLINOIS (Big Ten). Minnesota has been playing better lately, and a win like this could change the entire complexion of their resume, but even though they’ve improved they’re probably still swinging way over their heads in this one. Illinois is within reach of a protected seed.

-ALABAMA AT OLE MISS (SEC). It’s not the easiest game for Bama to win, but it is certainly within their abilities to do it. They were beaten rather handily by Kentucky over the weekend, but a win tonight on the road against a respectable NIT-ish Ole Miss team should bounce them back.

-ARIZONA AT ARIZONA STATE (Pac 12). It appears to be a mismatch, but sometimes in these rivalry games the underdog can really play up, especially if they’re at home. Arizona is still within reach of a #1 seed, and if they win out (which they are good enough to do) they should get it.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

Missouri @ Florida (SEC) – this almost feels like a buy game. The Gators seem to be getting better and better as the season progresses and they should be able to hold serve at home in this one

Old Dominion @ Appalachian State (Sun Belt) – App State has a one game lead on James Madison and can clinch at least a share of 1st place with a win tonight

Louisville @ Duke (ACC) – It’s technically a conference game, but it’s practically a home buy game for Duke

Samford @ Wofford (SoCon) – Samford has already clinched 1st place and is now playing for a chance to land on the bubble and/or get a favorable seed from the committee if they win the conference tournament

James Madison @ Georgia State (Sun Belt) – James Madison is a game behind App State, and we feel they are going to be on the bubble if they win out until the conference championship game

California @ Colorado (Pac 12) – Colorado is now outside of our bubble and needs to hold serve tonight against a Cal team that’s actually been playing fairly decently. A loss in this one would certainly move them even further outside the bubble

Indiana State @ Evansville (Missouri Valley) – Indiana State can still get inside the bubble if they win out through the regular season and avoid an early loss in the MVC Tournament. They can also clinch at least a share of 1st place if they win tonight

Richmond @ Saint Louis (Atlantic 10) – Richmond isn’t inside the bubble, but they will be the 1st place team in the A10 with a full game lead over Dayton if they can win this one

Louisiana Tech @ Western Kentucky (Conference USA) – LA Tech is in a first place tie with Sam Houston State, and the two will face each other next week

.

POTENTIAL UTR CLINCHERS (Thanks to David Dorman for compiling this):

SUN BELT – Appalachian State clinches with a win and a James Madison loss

BIG SOUTH – High Point clinches the outright title with a win tonight , they have already clinched a share

HORIZON – Oakland clinches the outright title with a  Youngstown St loss, Green Bay loss and Wright State loss , Oakland has already clinched a share

MISSOURI VALLEY – Indiana State clinches with a win tonight and a Drake loss tonight

ATLANTIC SUN – Eastern Kentucky clinches with a win tonight OR a Stetson loss tonight , Eastern Kentucky has already clinched a share

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Wednesday, February 28th

Louisiana Tech (20-8, 10-3) at Western Kentucky (19-8, 8-5) – 8:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Bowling Green, Kentucky for a potential Conference USA championship preview between the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the host Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Louisiana Tech has won 10 out of their last 12 games to jump into a first-place tie in the conference standings with Sam Houston. In their last game, Isaiah Collier had 20 points in the Bulldogs’ 67-58 road win at New Mexico State.

Western Kentucky had a 5-game winning streak in conference play at the beginning of February; they won at Louisiana Tech 81-76 during this winning streak. Don McHenry led the Toppers with 20 points in that win. However, a loss at rival Middle Tennessee (the 100 Miles of Hate rivalry) knocked WKU two games behind both Louisiana Tech and Sam Houston in the conference standings.

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-We had several exciting games last night, but for the most part the chalk held. North Carolina really had to sweat out a Miami FL team that was shorthanded, but held on to win. Kansas State blew a big lead against West Virginia, but held on to win in overtime. McNeese almost blew it against Lamar, but barely held on.

-Baylor got a really big win at TCU, which is a very solid road win and a very big way to bounce back after their loss at home to Houston over the weekend.

-Last but not least (well perhaps it is least), Mississippi Valley State knocked off Prairie View A&M 57-51 for their first win of the season!

.

HOOPS HD SURVIVAL BOARD WATCH (Click Here To See the Whole Board)

-Florida A&M has been mathematically eliminated from making the SWAC Tournament despite their win last night

-BUFFALO AT KENT STATE (MAC) – Buffalo is eliminated with a loss

-NORTHERN ILLINOIS AT TOLEDO (MAC) – Northern Illinois is eliminated with a loss, and with a Kent State win over Buffalo

HIGLIGHTED GAMES:

-CINCINNATI AT HOUSTON (Big 12). Cincinnati is outside the bubble and Houston is ranked #1 in the country. A road win against the top ranked team is generally a good way to beef up your resume, but it’s far easier said than done, and even if Cincinnati were to get the win they’d still have work to do.

-KENTUCKY AT MISSISSIPPI STATE (SEC). Kentucky is starting to play better and can end up as a protected seed if they keep playing at the level they have been for these past couple of weeks. This would be another big road win on their resume if they can pull it off. Mississippi State is squarely on the bubble, so this game has a bit of a pivotal feel for them as well.

-PITTSBURGH AT CLEMSON (ACC). Clemson is within reach of a protected seed, and Pitt seems to be within reach of the bubble. A road win for Pitt tonight will be a huge difference maker in whether or not they’re able to make the NCAA Tournament, so it is a hugely pivotal game for the Panthers.

-BYU AT KANSAS (Big 12). BYU is solidly in the field, but they could really improve the quality of their resume with a road win like this. BYU is just 2-6 in true road games, so this would change the entire complexion of it. Kansas is a solid protected seed and will remain that way so long as they can hold serve for the rest of the year.

-WAKE FOREST AT NOTRE DAME (ACC). Wake is right on the bubble, and after their home win against Duke most are starting to project them into the field. That all changes if they turn around and lose to a very poor Notre Dame team tonight.

-TEXAS AT TEXAS TECH (Big 12). The Longhorns are safely in the field, but they are just 3-5 in their last eight games, they haven’t been the best road team, and their stock is starting to drop a little bit. A win tonight can help change that, but it’s much easier said than done. Having said that, Texas Tech didn’t look all that good in their last game where they lost at UCF and will be looking to bounce back.

-NEVADA AT COLORADO STATE (Mountain West). Both teams are inside our bubble, but neither are on ground that is entirely solid and both could really use this win tonight. It feels like it’s somewhat pivotal for both teams.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

Georgetown @ Villanova (Big East) – Nova needs a strong finish, but they still have a path to the bubble. A loss in a game like this could completely derail that chance, though

Davidson @ Dayton (Atlantic 1o) – Dayton is solidly in the field and should easily land in the top half of the bracket so long as they continue to hold serve

Virginia Tech @ Syracuse (ACC) – Cuse MIGHT be able to reach the bubble, but they pretty much need to win out and then avoid an early loss in the ACC Tournament in order to have any real shot at it

Wisconsin @ Indiana (Big Ten) – Wisky has been in a bit of a tailspin, and struggled to beat Maryland at home in their last game. This should be a winnable road game for the Badgers, but given how they’ve been playing it may be a bigger struggle than expected

-Ohio U @ Akron (MAC) – The Zips can hold on to their one-game lead in the conference standings with just two games to go if they can hold serve in this one

Penn State @ Iowa (Big Ten) – Iowa has been playing really well. If they can hold serve in this one, and then get a win against eitehr Northwestern or Illinois and then another in the Big Ten Tournament the committee may give them a look

UNLV @ Wyoming (Mountain West) – UNLV still has a ton of work to do, but they’re playing really well and are moving up the MWC standings

Boise State @ Air Force (Mountain West) – Boise State is in the field, but AFA can be a tricky place to play. AFA is also coming off the big upset win at New Mexico and should be up for this one

Utah State @ Fresno State (Mountain West) – this should be a routine win for Utah State despite it being on the road

San Jose State @ San Diego State (Mountain West) – San Diego State is on pace to get a protected seed and should be able to hold serve in this one

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Tuesday, February 27th

Akron (20-7, 12-2) at Ohio (15-12, 9-5) – 7:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Athens, Ohio (aka the Harvard-On-The-Hocking) for a matchup between the hometown Ohio Bobcats and the Akron Zips. Akron completed the season sweep of the Wagon Wheel last week against Kent State with an 83-70 victory. They were led by 24 points from Enrique Freeman. With a one-game lead against Toledo in the MAC standings, tonight is the hardest regular season game Akron has remaining.

Ohio is one game ahead of Bowling Green for fourth place in the conference standings – however this merely guarantees they’ll wear white in the opening round of the MAC Tournament this season since only the top 8 teams in the conference will advance to Cleveland for the conference tournament. After a four-game winning streak was halted by a two-game losing streak, OU is coming off of back-to-back victories against Kent State and Northern Illinois. Miles Brown had 17 points in the Bobcats’ 21-point victory against Northern Illinois.

The Hoops HD Report (Feb 26th)

We start off the show discussing the issue that seems to have dominated the headlines for the last couple of days, and that’s court storming. We like court storming, but we do not like seeing players get hurt and seeing it happen as often as it does, so we discuss some different happy mediums that may be able to be reached.

From there, we recap a very busy week of college basketball and discuss Washington State’s monster win at Arizona and upset loss at Arizona State, Kentucky’s crazy week where they lost at LSU but then blew out Alabama, tons of tight games in the ACC and Big 12, the multiple bubble teams in the Big East, the tight race in the Mountain West, and more.

And, for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…
