Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Sunday, Feb 25th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-We had a few more eliminations yesterday. Keep checking the SURVIVAL BOARD every day with Dartmouth and Penn becoming ineligible for the Ivy League Tournament, and UTRGV being eliminated in the WAC.

-Wake Forest needed a big win yesterday, and got it. They had been outside of our bubble before, and despite being a home win, it came against a very good Duke team that’s played well on the road, so it should move them up. But, I guess what most people are talking about is what happened after the game. The students rushed the floor, and did so with a purpose!! This was a high energy game with an electric crowd all the way throughout. The problem was Kyle Flipowski of Duke got caught up in the rush and ended up spraining his ankle. There are a million videos and about a hundred million takes of this on Twitter/X right now, so no need to add to that here. I’m sorry it happened. I hope he is back soon. It was a good win for Wake. And, more discussions and planning probably needs to take place to ensure not just player safety, but the safety of the coaches, the referees, and the fans.

-Houston showed yesterday why they should be a #1 seed (not that we hadn’t seen it already, but we absolutely saw it again yesterday). They went into Baylor and got a road win against a team that is likely a protected seed. They actually jumped out to a big lead in the first half, and the Bears came back to force overtime after a crazy 3pt shot at the end of regulation appeared to win it for Houston, but was waived off for not beating the buzzer. Houston gets what may be their biggest road win of the season 82-76.

-Texas A&M lost at Tennessee, which in and of itself really isn’t all that bad, but losing 86-51 and making the game look like it were a buy game, and having said loss be your 4th straight…that’s kind of bad. TAMU is playing their way outside the bubble.

-North Carolina got a nice road win (at least on paper) at Virginia 54-44. Virginia’s offense continues to be so bad that it will make your eyes bleed if you stare at it for too long.

-Kentucky, after losing at LSU earlier in the week, played with a purpose yesterday as they absolutely blew Alabama off the floor 117-95. Kentucky is playing well right now! They are potentially dangerous.

-South Carolina, who had dropped two straight, got a really nice 72-59 win at Ole Miss yesterday. Their resume looks very solid and I still think they still have an outside shot of end up as a protected seed. Ole Miss seems to be outside the bubble after losing five of their last six.

-Washington State finished up the weekend doing exactly what we all thought they would do!! They split the road trip through Arizona!! We figured they’d go 1-1, and that’s exactly what they did!! They followed up their hugely impressive win at Arizona on Thursday, with a bit of a head-scratching 73-61 loss at Arizona State last night.

-UNLV continues to string together wins, and they got another one last night against Colorado State 66-60. There is a lot of talk about the strength of the Mountain West, but not much of it has focused on UNLV. Maybe it’s time to look at them. They still have work to do, but they’re 16-10 overall, 9-5 in league play, they’re 8-1 in their last nine games, and if they can win out through the regular season they’ll absolutely be in the discussion for a bid.

-Texas Tech is a good overall team that just doesn’t win on the road. They fell at UCF 75-61 and are now just 2-6 in true road games. They still go to West Virginia and Oklahoma State, and they should be able to get one of those, but their road record is becoming a bit of an issue.

-BYU also can’t win on the road. They fell at Kansas State 84-74 and are also just 2-6 in true road games.

-108 years of Bedlam ended yesterday, and it ended with a game winning 3pt shot at the buzzer at the end of overtime. Oklahoma desperately needed a big road win, and got it 84-82. One story is that it’s a much needed road win for the Sooners’ profile. Another story is that it’s a damn shame this rivalry is ending, and that it’s ending for the reasons that it is. They could keep this going if they wanted to., but they don’t. It’s another reminder that a lot of administrators in college athletics just don’t care about things such as rivalry games that draw fan interest.

-We have a new biggest upset of the year!! Air Force was about 250 spots behind New Mexico in the NET, and they went into The Pit and stunned the Lobos 78-77. AFA had a lead throughout, but then New Mexico got control late and once that happened you just sort of figured they’d escape. Well, they didn’t. It doesn’t knock the Lobos outside the bubble, but it is an extremely damaging loss.

-I’m pretty sure whatever slim hopes Drake had of an at-large have been dashed. They lost to Northern Iowa 91-77 yesterday and will now almost assuredly need the auto-bid in order to make the field.

-Mississippi State had been really bad on the road, but they picked up a really nice 87-67 win at LSU last night, which does a ton to help out their resume.

-Utah was blown out at Colorado, they continue to be absolutely awful on the road, and given that they’re just 7-9 in Pac 12 play it’s probably time to place them squarely OUTSIDE the bubble.

-Another UTR surprise was Cornell losing at home to Brown yesterday. We had Cornell listed as Under Consideration on our Survival Board, but I strongly suspect that will no longer be the case when we do a scrub of the Board on Monday night. This all but eliminates the potential for a 3-way tie between Princeton, Yale and Cornell that would require an Ivy League degree to decode tiebreakers for seeds here.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-SAINT JOHN’S AT CREIGHTON (Big East). Saint John’s tailspin continues, and Creighton continues to look more and more like a protected seed. They should be able to hold serve at home in this one.

-CREIGHTON AT ST. JOHN’S (Big East). Stupid Puppet, St. John’s is hosting the Bluejays at MSG. Nonetheless, the Johnnies are almost out of strikes and absolutely need wins of any kind in the worst way. A protected-seed caliber win would immensely help right now. (Edited by The Management at Hoops HD)

-SMU AT SOUTH FLORIDA (American). These are two teams that have been playing really well, but are likely still outside the bubble. SMU had won seven in a row before losing to South Florida earlier this week, and South Florida is one of the hotter teams in the nation. The Bulls’ NCAA Tournament at-large hopes are still barely flickering, but they need to win out through the regular season in order to get any sort of a serious look.

-PURDUE AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten). Purdue will almost assuredly lock up a #1 seed if they can hold serve the rest of the year. This should be an easy win for them even though it’s a road game.

-FLORIDA ATLANTIC AT MEMPHIS (American). Back in January it appeared that this would be the showcase match-up of the regular season in the AAC, but that was before Memphis had lost six out of nine and played their way entirely out of the picture. Memphis still has a talented team, and they are at home, and this is a showcase game for them, so FAU won’t just waltz in and blow them off the floor, especially when you consider how FAU tends to play either up or down to their competition no matter who it is.

-OHIO STATE AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten). Michigan State has been playing better and should be able to hold serve at home against a non-tournament caliber team.

-XAVIER AT MARQUETTE (Big East). Marquette is looking like a solid #2 seed and will be in that range so long as they continue to hold serve. They should roll in this one against a Xavier team that’s now lost three straight

-MINNESOTA AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten). Nebraska got a much needed road win earlier in the week, and they should be able to hold serve in this one, but Minney has been playing better lately. They’ve won five of their last seven, they’re over 500 in conference play, and if they can get a road win like this they’ll continue to work their way toward the bubble.

.

UTR CONFERENCE WATCH

-WRIGHT STATE AT OAKLAND (Horizon League). Oakland can clinch at least a share of 1st place with a win today, and since their last game of the season is a home game against Detroit, it’s kind of like clinching it outright today. (UTR Game of the Day)

-High Point clinched at least a share of 1st place in the Big South yesterday with their win against Charleston Southern and UNC Asheville’s loss to Gardner Webb.

-Merrimack and Central Connecticut both win, so Merrimack holds on to their one game lead with two games to go in the NEC.

-Samford has clinched 1st place in the SoCon after their 87-71 win over East Tennessee State. BUCKY BALL!!!!

-North Dakota fell to rival North Dakota State 73-68, and South Dakota State held on to beat Saint Thomas 77-72. The two will play each other this Thursday with major 1st place implications. If South Dakota State wins, they clinch 1st place in the Summit League. If North Dakota wins, the two are tied with just one game remaining.

-UC Irvine and UC San Diego are now tied atop the Big West after UCSD’s OT win against the Eaters yesterday pulled the two even with just four games to go

-Little Rock and UT Martin remain tied with Morehead State in the OVC after both teams won yesterday

-McNeese continues to cruise through the Southland

-Cornell suffered an upset to Brown, which all but ends their at-large hopes and knocks them back into a three way tie with Princeton and Yale in the Ivy League

-Vermont clinched at least a share of 1st place in the America East with their 65-48 win over Bryant. They’ll face UMass Lowell in their next game and can clinch it outright with a win

-Eastern Washington snapped a two game losing streak and got a big win at Northern Colorado. They now have a two game lead in the Big Sky standings with just three games to go.

-Lousiana Tech and Sam Houston State remain tied atop Conference USA

-Grambling got a massive 63-57 road win over their rivals Southern U and now have a one game lead in the SWAC standings

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Sunday, February 25th

Wright State (16-12, 11-6) at Oakland (19-10, 14-4) – 3:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to the Blacktop in Oakland, Michigan for a Horizon League matchup between the Oakland Golden Grizzlies and the Wright State Raiders. A win today for Oakland would clinch at least a first-place tie and all but effectively give them the #1 seed (barring a catastrophic loss against 1-win Detroit Mercy in their regular-season finale). The Griz already won their first matchup at Wright State 74-60; Trey Townsend had 19 points in that victory for Oakland.

Wright State is mathematically alive (albeit barely) for the #1 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament, but more importantly they are trying to fend off archrival Northern Kentucky for one of the Top 4 seeds; they get to host quarterfinal round matchups on their home floor before the semifinals and championship are played at the Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis. In the Raiders’ last outing, Trey Calvin led Wright State with 25 points in a 93-78 win against Detroit Mercy.

And on a final note, also keep in mind that Green Bay (12-5 in the Horizon) is hosting Youngstown State (12-6 in the Horizon) today. Should Youngstown State win and Oakland win, Oakland would clinch the outright regular season title.

HOOPS HD SURVIVAL BOARD WATCH (CLICK HERE to view the Whole Board):

-UTRGV AT SEATTLE U (WAC). UTRGV will be mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the conference tournament with a loss

-ALABAMA STATE AT FLORIDA A&M (SWAC). FAMU will be mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the conference tournament with a loss

-SEMO AT UT MARTIN (Ohio Valley). SEMO will be eliminated if they lose and if Southern Indiana wins at Western Illinois

-PENN AT HARVARD (Ivy League). Penn will be eliminated with a loss

-PRINCETON AT DARTMOUTH (Ivy League). Dartmouth eliminated with a loss

-BROWN AT CORNELL (Ivy League). If Brown wins, Dartmouth is eliminated even if they win their game.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day is a true Clash of the Titans!! To check it out – CLICK HERE

-HOUSTON AT BAYLOR (Big 12). Both teams look to be solid protected seeds, and Houston looks like they’ll almost assuredly end up ranked #1 on Monday if they can get this win. It won’t be easy, though. Baylor is 12-1 at home and is looking to bounce back from a road loss to BYU, so they will be jacked WAAAY up for this one!

-DUKE AT WAKE FOREST (ACC). This will likely be a tough road game for the Blue Devils. I don’t think Wake is inside the bubble at all, but if they can somehow pull off this one it would make us all sit up and take notice. Duke appears to be cruising to a protected seed and has been a fairly solid road team, but this would probably be among their best road wins of the year so far if they’re able to pull it out. It should be a good one!

-BYU AT KANSAS STATE (Big 12). The one thing BYU could really use to make their profile look a whole lot better is a notable road win. A win at K State would certainly qualify. K State has lost seven of their last eight, and for now is out of the picture, but their next three games (including this one) are winnable and if they get all three of them they can begin to turn things around.

-IOWA AT ILLINOIS (Big Ten). These two teams are pretty far apart on paper, but Iowa has had a much better week than Illinois. The Hawkeyes have won three of their last four and knocked off both Wisconsin and Michigan State in that stretch. Illinois is coming off a loss to a pretty weak Penn State team and really looking to bounce back today.

-CINCINNATI AT TCU (Big 12). Cincinnati is outside the bubble and if they want to get back inside of it then these are the games they’re going to have to find a way to win. TCU is solidly in the field and should easily land in the top half of the bracket if they continue to hold serve.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT OLE MISS (SEC). Ole Miss’s tournament hopes are fading. A win today would help, but even with the win they’d still have a lot of work to do. South Carolina looks to be solidly in, but their resume and metrics could use some work. A road win like this would make an already impressive resume look a little bit better.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT VIRGINIA (ACC). Virginia’s profile looks good, but on the court the Hoos have looked like the complete opposite of good in their last couple of games. They’re at home, and they are capable of playing at a high level, so it won’t be an easy game for North Carolina by any means. It’s a chance for Virginia to add a good win to their resume, and for North Carolina it’s a chance at a quality road win which can keep them within reach of the #1 line.

-ALABAMA AT KENTUCKY (SEC). Kentucky had been playing really well, and this past weekend they picked up a huge road win at Auburn, but followed that up with an upset loss (albeit at the buzzer) on the road against LSU. Still, I think they’re playing at a really high caliber and will be way up for this one against a very good Alabama team today. Alabama is looking like they’ll end up as a protected seed, and a win like this can solidify their case even more.

-TEXAS TECH AT UCF (Big 12). Texas Tech is just 2-5 on the road and could really make their resume look better with a win in this one. UCF is not the easiest place to win, but it is perhaps easier than most of the rest of the Big 12, so the Red Raiders will really want to take care of business in this one.

-OKLAHOMA AT OKLAHOMA STATE (Big 12). BEDLAM!!!!! Sadly, it may be the last time we see these two play for a long time. Oklahoma has just two true road wins and another one would make their resume look a lot better (at least to me). Oklahoma State has had a miserable year, but they’ve won their last two against BYU and at Cincinnati, so they’ve suddenly been looking a lot better, and they should be way up for this one. It sucks this series is ending!! It really does!! If college sports were really “about the game” like so many people like to say it is, then there is no way these two would not continue to play after this year!!

-VIRGINIA TECH AT PITTSBURGH (ACC). Pitt was blown out by Wake Forest in their last game, but prior to that they had been playing really well. They are good enough to win out until the end of the regular season, and if they do I think the committee will give them one hell of a look. Anything short of that and they’ll be under a lot of pressure in the ACC Tournament.

-TEXAS AT KANSAS (Big 12). Texas is a solid tournament team, and Kansas is a solid protected seed. Seeing as how Kansas is at home, they should be able to hold serve in this one. A loss for Texas wouldn’t really set them back, but a win would REALLY boost their resume.

-AUBURN AT GEORGIA (SEC). This looks to be a winnable road game for Auburn, and the more true road wins they can rack up, the stronger their profile is.

-BOISE STATE AT WYOMING (Mountain West). I think Boise State is pretty safely inside the bubble and will stay there so long as they hold serve, but many others at Hoops HD still have them very close to the bubble. Either way, this is a game they got to win, and winning at Wyoming is not always easy.

-VILLANOVA AT CONNECTICUT (Big East). Nova is on the bubble and UConn is on the #1 line. One way for Nova to take a huge step toward landing inside the bubble would be to find a way to win this game, but UConn has pretty much been unstoppable at home. They don’t just win at home. They blow really good teams out at home.

-TEXAS A&M AT TENNESSEE (SEC). TAMU is squarely on the bubble, so a game like this is a huge opportunity for them to land on the right side of it. It’s far easier said than done, though, especially when you look at TAMU’s three straight losses and how much they’ve been struggling lately, and how Tennessee may be moving up to the #1 line after Arizona’s most recent loss.

-WASHINGTON STATE AT ARIZONA STATE (Pac 12). Wazzu just picked up the single most impressive that any team has managed all year, and while many may think this should be easy after that, it’s still a road game, and it’s sometimes very difficult for a team to refocus after such a big win.

-COLORADO STATE AT UNLV (Mountain West). Colorado State is safely inside our bubble and will remain there so long as they hold serve. This would be a nice road win against a UNLV team that isn’t in the field, but that has really been playing well lately, and still has some opportunities to pick up some big wins, climb the MWC standings, and maybe make a run at the bubble.

-BUTLER AT SETON HALL (Big East). This is a super bubblicous game that both teams really need, ESPECIALLY Butler. Both teams have a lot of good things on their resumes, and both will get serious looks, but both also need just a little bit more to lock themselves in, which is what makes this such a huge game for both teams.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT LSU (SEC). I’ve been beating up on Mississippi State all year because they’ve only won one true road game. They DESPERATELY need another one, and while they’ve still got games at Auburn and at Texas A&M, this is perhaps their most winnable remaining road game. If they don’t get this one, then it will be even harder to get the other two, so they REALLY need to win this game.

-UTAH AT COLORADO (Pac 12). This is another bubblicous game. Utah has not been good on the road at all, and may have actually saved their season when they beat UCLA at the buzzer earlier this week. If they can follow that up with another road win in this one, they will have breathed a lot of life back onto their resume.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

Vanderbilt @ Florida (SEC) – The Gators just missed out on a huge win earlier this week as they came up just short at Alabama. They should be able to hold serve in this one, though

Washington @ Arizona (Pac 12) – Arizona is still in good shape and could still end up with a #1 seed if they win out. They should be able to bounce back in this one

West Virginia @ Iowa State (Big 12) – Iowa State had a pretty solid showing at Houston earlier this week, but came up short. That’s not too discouraging since Houston is one of the toughest places in the country to win. They should be able to bounce back today in a very winnable home game against WVU

Boston College @ NC State (ACC) – if NC State has any shot at all at making the field, they’ll need to probably win four of their last five remaining games, which would mean holding serve in games like as well as beating either UNC or Duke

Air Force @ New Mexico (Mountain West) – New Mexico is solidly inside our field and has been very good at home this year. They should hold serve against AFA.

Grand Canyon @ Abilene Christian (WAC) – GCU needs to bounce back from the loss earlier in the week. If they win out they should still be inside the bubble.

Incarnate Word @ McNeese (Southland) – McNeese should at least be in serious discussion for a bid if they win out. Anything short of that and they’ll definitely need the auto-bid. A win today and a TAMUCC loss at Lamar gives them at least a share of 1st place

James Madison @ Georgia Southern (Sun Belt). JMU is in a race with Appalachian State for 1st place, and both teams are very close to the bubble, but both also probably have to win out to get any sort of a serious look

Drake @ Northern Iowa (Missouri Valley) – it’s a rivalry game, it’s potentially a tough road game for Drake, and it’s one they absolutely have to win to have any shot at all at landing inside the bubble

Appalachian State @ Marshall (Sun Belt) – App State should be right on the bubble if they win out, but anything short of that and they’ll almost assuredly need the auto-bid

Oregon @ California (Pac 12) – Oregon is somehow still just one game out of 1st place in the loss column and they have games remaining at Arizona and at home against Colorado and Utah, so the chances to play their way inside the bubble are actually in front of them

Florida State @ Clemson (ACC) – Clemson is a virtual lock to make the tournament and can still end up with a protected seed if they finish strong. They should be able to hold serve in this one

UIC @ Indiana State (Missouri Valley) – Indiana State needs to win out just to stay on the bubble, and even that may not be enough without the auto bid. They sure as hell can’t afford to lose a game like this at home

San Diego @ Saint Mary’s (West Coast) – SMC continues to climb the rankings and the seedlist and will stay in great shape so long as they keep holding serve

San Diego State @ Fresno State (Mountain West) – San Diego State is in play for a protected seed, and should be able to hold serve in this one

Santa Clara @ Gonzaga (West Coast) – The Zags are squarely on the bubble and pretty much need to win out in order to feel like they are reasonably safely inside of it

Pepperdine @ San Francisco (West Coast) – San Francisco is outside the bubble, but if they win out and beat either Gonzaga or Saint Mary’s in the WCC Tournament, they will have a very compelling case for a bid

.

UNDER THE RADAR WATCH:

East Tennessee State @ Samford (SoCon) – Samford can clinch at least a share of 1st place with a win today. While I think they’ll be on the board, I also (unfortunately) think they’ll need to win the auto-bid to make the field.

UC Irvine @ UC San Diego (Big West) – perhaps the toughest remaining game left on the Eaters’ schedule. A win gives them a two game lead over UCSD with four games remaining

Eastern Kentucky @ Central Arkansas (Atlantic Sun) – EKU can clinch at least a share of 1st place with a win, and clinch it outright if Stetson also loses to Kennesaw

Grambling @ Southern (SWAC) – it’s the Bayou Classic on the Hardwood!! And the two teams are tied for 1st place!!!

Yale @ Columbia (Ivy League). 1st place implications for Yale, and 4th place implications for Columbia, which means major conference tournament implications for Columbia

Princeton @ Dartmouth (Ivy League) – 1st place implications for Princeton as they are in a three way race for the #1 seed

Bryant @ Vermont (America East) – These are the top two teams in the conference, and Vermont clinches 1st place (and home court advantage in the conference tournament) with a win tonight

-Eastern Washington @ Northern Colorado (Big Sky) – these are the top two teams in the league. Eastern Washington has lost two straight, but still has a one game lead over Northern Colorado with just four games to go. This is probably one of the more pivotal games of the day when it comes to conference standings

Louisiana Tech @ New Mexico State (Conference USA) – LA Tech is tied with Sam Houston wiht 4 games to go, and the two play each other on the second to last game of the season

Sam Houston @ UTEP (Conference USA) – see above^^^^

High Point @ Charleston Southern (Big South) – High Point has a 1/2 game lead over UNC Asheville with just 3 games to go

Charleston @ Towson (Coastal Athleitc) – Charleston has a 1 game lead over UNC Wilmington with three games to go, and since UNCW swept the regular season series, CofC will have to win it outright to get the #1 seed

Norfolk State @ Coppin State (MEAC) – Norfolk State has a 2 game lead in the standings with 5 games to go, but their next three (including this one) are all on the road

Central Connecticut @ Sacred Heart (Northeast Conference) – CCSU can get within a game of Merrimack with just two games remaining. The 1st place team gets home court advantage in the conference tournament

Little Rock @ Lindenwood (Ohio Valley) – Little Rock can tie for 1st with Morehead State with a win today, and with just two games to go after today

UT Martin @ SEMO (Ohio Valley) – UT Martin can tie for 1st with Morehead State with a win today, and with just two games to go after today

Colgate @ American (Patriot League) – Colgate has already clinched 1st place and home court advantage during the conference tournament. They are now just playing to protect their NCAA Tournament resume if they win the auto-bid

North Dakota @ North Dakota State (Summit League) – North Dakota has a big rivalry game today on the road, and they’re also tied for 1st place with South Dakota State with just two games to go. The two will play each other this Thursday in a game that could decide 1st place

Saint Thomas @ South Dakota State (Summit League) – South Dakota State is tied with North Dakota State with just three games to go, and the two will play each other this Thursday

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Saturday, February 24th

Georgetown (8-18, 1-14) at DePaul (3-23, 0-15) – 6:00 PM ET (CBS Sports Network)

East meets West (no, not East-West that DePaul plays semi-annually) in this matchup of Big East titans. (Well, maybe they were once titans in the Iron Age of the NCAA). The resistable force meets the movable object as the Georgetown Hoyas travel to Chicago to take on the DePaul Blue Demons. Also keep in mind that this is not the first time we’ve had a historic matchup to determine the 2024 Hoops HD Stallings Award (click here for a list of past winners) this year – DePaul did beat Louisville earlier this season at home in front of a packed crowd of tens of people.

One way or another, a long losing streak will come to an end today. Georgetown has lost eight road games in Big East play in a row (their last win was actually at Butler 370 days ago). DePaul has lost 16 games in a row against Big East foes – their last win came against Seton Hall in the Big East Tournament. If you go solely by regular season Big East games, the Blue Demons have lost a staggering 27 games in a row against Big East teams; their last such win was on 1/18/23 against #8 Xavier last season. And plenty of tickets are available for tonight’s titanic struggle in the South Chicago Loop!

But there was a time when both teams were relevant nationally; here is some video footage below. We have confirmed that this is not one of Stalica’s deepfakes/made-up rivalries:

HOOPS HD SURVIVAL BOARD WATCH (CLICK HERE to view the Whole Board):

-PENN AT DARTMOUTH (Ivy League). Dartmouth will be eliminated if they lose and Columbia beats Brown. Penn is eliminated if they lose, and either Columbia or Harvard wins.

Cal Poly in the Big West is still alive, but barely. They lost their game at Cal State Fullerton, but Cal State Bakersfield lost at Long Beach State, so they are still mathematically alive until Saturday. EDIT: Cal Poly cannot win any tiebreakers and has been eliminated. If the Puppet bothered reading the emails that Chad sent him, he would know this.

-Washington State was picked to finish 11th, and then as the season played out and we got into conference play they started to look like they might be decent, then it started to look like they could get inside the bubble, then it started to look like they were solidly inside the bubble, and now it’s starting to look like they’re going to finish 1st in the Pac 12 and be seeded well inside the top half of the bracket. Their win at Arizona last night was the first home loss of the season for any of the four teams that the committee gave a #1 seed to last week. They are collectively 56-1 at home. Wazzu is who has that one win, and it is for now the best singular win that any D1 team has managed all year long.

As far as the game itself, it was awesome!! It was close all throughout, the lead and momentum seesawed back and forth, and in the final minute of play when it looked like Arizona was in control with a 3pt lead, Wazzu converted the very rarely seen 4pt play to get the lead and ultimately get the win!!

-Grand Canyon played a great first half on the road against a pretty good Tarlton State team and seemed to be cruising. Then in the second half Tarlton came back and actually ended up pulling off the upset 77-74. It’s always damaging when an Under the Radar team loses any games in conference, and this loss is no different. I still think Grand Canyon SHOULD be inside the bubble if they win out through the regular season, but it’s not a guarantee like it would have been had they avoided this loss.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-YALE AT CORNELL (Ivy League). These are two of the teams in a three-way race for the Ivy League title. Both have a slim shot at landing inside the bubble if they win out, and both these teams are really good, so it should be a good one.

-NEVADA AT SAN JOSE STATE (Mountain West). It’s a road game for Nevada, but it’s against an exceptionally weak team and it would be a bad loss for the Wolfpack if they’re not able to hold serve.
