Donnie Basketball: HoopsHD interviews McDonald’s All-American Donnie Freeman

If you want to win an NCAA title then you usually need a good coach, a great resume…and a McDonald’s All-American. Only 2 championship teams from 1979-2020 did not have such a player (2002 Maryland/2014 UConn) but 2 of the past 3 champs have successfully broken away from this trend (2021 Baylor/2023 UConn). The rosters for this year’s McDonald’s All-American Game were announced in January after selecting the 24 best players in the nation from a list of several hundred nominees. If you do not think these guys can make an immediate impact in the fall, just ask Coach Scott Drew how he likes having 2023 honoree Ja’Kobe Walter at Baylor! Unlike most years when 1 school stands out as the big winner with the most All-Americans, there are 5 different programs tied for the lead with 2 each (Alabama/Duke/Kentucky/North Carolina and…Rutgers!?). Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Donnie Freeman about being named a McDonald’s All-American and winning multiple titles.

You were born in the Bahamas and moved to DC when you were 6 years old: how did you 1st get into basketball? I played a lot of different sports growing up including karate/track but I was the best at basketball and stuck with it.

Last spring you won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Tournament Championship with St. John’s College High School and then a few months later you won the EYBL Peach Jam Championship with Team Takeover: what is the secret to winning titles? With Team Takeover we were a complete team and played really well on defense, but in the end it comes down to who plays together the most and has the most trust.

Why did you decide to transfer to IMG Academy, and how is it working out so far? It was the best opportunity for me to be seen, play against the best players in the country, and train like a pro. Being away from my family will also help me adjust to being at college this fall.

You received offers from several great schools including Alabama/Georgetown but signed with Syracuse last November: what was the biggest factor in your decision? I had the most genuine relationship with their coaching staff and they offered me a great opportunity coming in.

You have added at least 10 pounds of muscle over the past few months via a strength and conditioning program/nutritionist: how has your hard work off the court impacted your skill set on the court? It helps to be able to take the ball to the rim. I can also guard bigger players and box out for rebounds pretty well.

Coach Adrian Autry’s team is 14-8 and only has 1 senior on the roster: do you think they will make it into the NCAA tourney, and do you think that you can come in and play a significant role next year if everyone returns? They can be as good as anyone in the country because they have some really good pieces. Hopefully I can come in next year and have a good impact.

Last month you were named a McDonald’s All-American: what did it mean to you to receive such an outstanding honor? It was a dream come true. When I was a kid it was something that I always wanted to accomplish so it was a great honor.

There are several other honorees who will be heading to the ACC this fall including Isaiah Evans (Duke)/Cooper Flagg (Duke)/Ian Jackson (NC)/Drake Powell (NC): which of them are you most excited to play against? Nobody in particular: I am just excited to compete against everyone.

You are part of a small but great recruiting class including Elijah Moore: how well do you know your future teammate? We are pretty cool and have had some conversations here and there. We were unable to take our official visits at the same time but are excited to get to campus this year.

You are 6’9”: what position do you play now, and what position will you feel most comfortable at in college? I play PF/C now but I am comfortable playing at any position.

-It’s a big night of Under the Radar games, and rather than just featuring one game, John Stalica has put together an Under the Radar Showcase! To check it out – CLICK HERE

-The biggest surprise from last night was Wisconsin’s 72-68 loss at Michigan. Less than a week ago, Wisky had been looking like a team that could keep pace with Purdue, and while the loss to Purdue wasn’t that shocking, a loss to a Michigan team that had just looked absolutely pitiful for most of the season was really surprising.

-Auburn had no trouble with rival Alabama. They jumped out to a big lead and pretty much held it for the whole game for a 99-81 win. Auburn, who had been lacking in quad 1 wins prior to this past weekend, has now picked up two really nice ones and will almost undoubtedly move way up our seedlist tonight.

-Providence may be the grittiest team in the country. Every time you think the nail is about to be driven into their coffin, they come back with a big win. They knocked off Creighton in overtime last night 91-87, and while it was a home win it’s still huge for the Friars. Getting to the NCAA Tournament would be a huge accomplishment for this program, and they are on pace to do it.

-Xavier held off Villanova in a game that both teams desperately needed. It was close throughout, but Xavier found themselves up 3 as Villanova came down for the last possession and needing a 3 to tie. Nova did not get a 3pt attempt off. In fact, they got NO shot attempt off, and time expired. Xavier is outside the bubble, but they can get there with a very strong finish, and they look to be good enough to get the wins they need between now and the end.

-They are still a long ways away from the bubble, but after being completely (and justifiably) ignored by everyone for more than a month now, UCLA is now 6-1 in their last 7 games and moving up the Pac 12 standings. They won at Stanford last night 82-74.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-MEMPHIS AT TEMPLE (American). I have Memphis outside my bubble right now, but whether they’re in or out we can all agree that they are unstable at best. They need to finish strong and they need to get it done on the road tonight. A loss as bad as this, even though it’s on the road, could cripple their resume.

-ARIZONA AT UTAH (Pac 12). Arizona looks to be a solid protected seed, but they have dropped some games on the road this year and this may be another challenge for them tonight. Most have Utah in, but I still think they have some work to do. What they need more than anything else is road wins, but a home win over Arizona certainly wouldn’t hurt.

-ARIZONA STATE AT COLORADO (Pac 12). What Colorado really needs is road wins, but they also need to hold serve. A home loss to a team that’s nowhere near the field would really sink them.

-FLORIDA ATLANTIC AT UAB (American). After showing signs of inconsistency for the first half of the season, FAU seems to have finally hit their stride and has now rattled off seven straight wins. They may be tested on the road tonight against a UAB team that will be up for this one and that can be tough to beat on the road, but if they play like they’ve been playing they should be able to hold serve.

-WASHINGTON STATE AT OREGON STATE (Pac 12). Wazzu is just inside our bubble, and the way they’ve been playing makes us think they can continue to climb the seedlist. This is a winnable road game for the Cougars and road wins always look good on profiles.

-WASHINGTON AT OREGON (Pac 12). Oregon is outside the bubble, but they can perhaps reach it if they can start stringing together wins. They need to hold serve at home against their rivals tonight.

-UC IRVINE AT UC SANTA BARBARA. If UC Irvine wants any hope at all of getting inside the bubble then they pretty much need to win out.

Under the Radar Showcase – Thursday, February 8th

We couldn’t just choose one game for tonight – there are extremely pivotal games in the Coastal, SoCon and Big West involving first place.

Samford (20-3, 9-1) at UNC-Greensboro (17-6, 8-2) – 7:00 PM ET (ESPNU)

Our first stop takes us to Greensboro for a 1-2 matchup in the SoCon between the Samford Bulldogs and the UNC-Greensboro Spartans. Samford won the first meeting 79-70 between the two teams in Birmingham and a win here would not only virtually lock up all the meaningful tiebreakers, but it could also give the Bulldogs and Bucky Ball a lifeline to an at-large NCAA bid should they stumble in the SoCon Tournament in a month.

Drexel (15-8, 8-2) at UNC-Wilmington (16-6, 7-3) – 7:00 PM ET (FloHoops)

Our other early game features the Drexel Dragons and the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks. Drexel has lost two of their last three games to make the Coastal race competitive again. Wilmington is riding high after a two-game sweep of Charleston, but they will be looking to avenge a 78-63 loss that was played on Drexel’s on-campus arena back in January.

UC-Irvine (17-6, 10-1) at UC-Santa Barbara (13-8, 6-5) – 10:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

It’s the GauchEater Cup! UC-Irvine has a one-game leader over both UC-San Diego and UC-Davis in the conference standings, but it feels almost like a two-team race with UCSD still in their transition up to Division 1. The Gauchos will be playing more of a spoiler role right now, but the Thunderdome has never been an easy place for UC-Irvine to get a road win.

Under the Radar (Feb 7th)

Tonight’s feature conference is the Northeast Conference, which is one of our favorites. Central Connecticut lost a tough one to Merrimack over the weekend, and that has created a logjam at the top of the league with those two in a tie with preseason favorites Sacred Heart and last year’s media darlings Fairleigh Dickinson right behind them.

From there we run through the other 21 UTR conferences and discuss how Vermont is distancing themselves from the rest of the America East, a big week for a really good UC Irvine team in the Big West, Samford’s surprisingly dominant win on the road at Chattanooga out in the SoCon, how Princeton has fallen behind Cornell and Yale in the Ivy League, some really disappointing and damaging losses for McNeese in the Southland and Appalachian State in the Sun Belt, and much more! And, as we do every week, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Eye of the Tiger: HoopsHD interviews McDonald’s All-American Tahaad Pettiford

If you want to win an NCAA title then you usually need a good coach, a great resume…and a McDonald’s All-American. Only 2 championship teams from 1979-2020 did not have such a player (2002 Maryland/2014 UConn) but 2 of the past 3 champs have successfully broken away from this trend (2021 Baylor/2023 UConn). Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Tahaad Pettiford about being named a McDonald’s All-American and having the game of his life last month.

Your Hudson Catholic team went 16-12 last year but is off to a 17-7 start this year: what has been the biggest difference from last year to this year? Just coming together as a team and being competitive.

You received offers from several great schools including Connecticut/Kansas/Kentucky but signed with Auburn last February: what was the biggest factor in your decision? The coaching staff and the connection I made with them. I also like their playing style.

Coach Bruce Pearl’s team is 18-4 and starts a FR PG named Aden Holloway: how far do you think they will go this March, and do you think that you and Aden can play on the court at the same time if he decides to return to school next year? Hopefully they win it all! I think that Aden and I could definitely play together and would complement each other.

You are part of a small but great recruiting class including Jahki Howard: how well do you know your future teammate? We knew each other very well as we were AAU teammates. We 1st met in 7th grade at a basketball camp and have remained close ever since.

Last month you scored a career-high 42 PTS including a game-tying 3-PT shot with 4 seconds left in regulation and then a 30-foot buzzer-beater at the end of the 1st OT in a 9-PT 2-OT win over Roselle Catholic (www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IMmK7cPrgU): where does that rank among the best performances of your career? It is definitely #1.

Less than 1 week later Richie Rosa made a 3-PT shot at the buzzer in a 2-PT win by St. Peter’s Prep: where does that rank among the most devastating losses of your career? It is #1 as well: it was the 1st time that I have ever lost a game on a buzzer-beater.

A couple of weeks ago you were named a McDonald’s All-American: what did it mean to you to receive such an outstanding honor? It was a great accomplishment and something that every kid dreams of. I have always wanted to play in that game so to get that call was a dream come true.

Another player from New Jersey who will be joining you at the McDonald’s Game is Dylan Harper from Don Bosco Prep: have you ever had the chance to play with/against him during your high school career? We have never been on the same team before but we played against each other twice during high school.

1 of the best aspects of your game is your ability to steal the ball (you averaged 2.5 SPG at the EYBL last year): what is the secret to being a great defender? Getting into the passing lane, being quick, and reading the defense to anticipate the next pass.

You are 6’1”: what position do you play now, and what position will you feel most comfortable at in college? I play PG now, and in college I will play whatever position Coach Pearl needs me to play.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Wednesday, Feb 7th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day, which is a VERY good one between High Point and UNC Asheville – CLICK HERE

-Clemson managed to double their all-time win total in Chapel Hill last night as they outlasted North Carolina 80-76. North Carolina is a team that we’ve had on the #1 line for the last several weeks, so this is one of the single best wins that any team has managed all season long. Clemson has had some great moments, and they’ve had a few other near misses like a recent 1pt loss at Duke. They don’t always play up to their ceiling, but when they do they’re good enough to play with, and even beat, protected seeds on the road. They’ve shown that to us multiple times this year.

-Houston beat Oklahoma State very easily 79-63 in a game that isn’t noteworthy at all, other than that Kelvin Sampson went into complete Yosemite Sam mode with his team up 20 and got kicked out of the game! I mean…my goodness!! Could you imagine how angry he would have been had they only been up by 15??

-Iowa State opened up a big lead against Texas, but the Longhorns came back and made a game of it. The Cyclones held on to win, and a team that seems to have been kind of quiet this year is suddenly looking more and more like a solid protected seed, and could even end up as high as the #2 or #3 line. Texas is not a top 25 team right now, but to win on their floor is no small thing.

-Ole Miss could have REALLY used the win at South Carolina last night. It would have been massive, and probably moved them up multiple seedlines. They fell way behind, but came back and even tied it, but couldn’t get the win. South Carolina is having an amazing season and there is no reason to thnk they do not deserve a protected seed at this point.

-Dayton always seems to show up for a game and not really take their opponent seroiusly. Then at halftime they realize that they need to get it together, and they do. They fell behind early to Saint Joseph’s and trailed for the entire first half, but then blew it open in the second half and won easily 94-79. When Dayton wants to be good, they are VERY good!

-Nevada, who had been straddling the bubble for the past several weeks, took a big step in the right direction last night with their 77-63 win at Utah State. Utah State was in the rankings and unbeaten at home, so this was a MASSIVE win for the Wolfpack.

-South Florida came from 18 down against Charlotte and ended up with a 72-69 win. It is Amir Abdur-Rahim’s first year with the Bulls after an amazing run with Kennesaw State, and after a bit of a slow start they have now won 14 of their last 15 and are in a tie for 1st place in the American. Their NET is still not top 100, but there are enough things on their resume to where I think the committee will give them a serious look if they keep it up. Also, if they do keep it up, their NET will likely go up.

-Michigan State cannot win on the road. They’ve lost all their road games but one, and last night they fell to Minnesota 59-56. They’ve got four remaining road games left against Penn State, Michigan, Purdue, and Indiana. If they can’t win at least two of those then I don’t think they belong in the tournament.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-ALABAMA AT AUBURN (SEC). This is the second part of the basketball version of the Iron Bowl. Alabama won the first one and is looking more and more like they could end up as a protected seed. Auburn is coming off their biggest win of the year as they knocked off Ole Miss, but they could give their resume another nice big boost if they’re able to knock off their rivals at home tonight.

-VILLANOVA AT XAVIER (Big East). This game is super-bubbilicous. Both teams have 12-10 records that they need to improve on. Both have a smattering of good wins, but both also have questionable losses. Both can reach the bubble, but need a really strong finish in order to do it, and both really need this win tonight.

-CREIGHTON AT PROVIDENCE (Big East). Creighton is still in position to end up as a protected seed, and a road win like this would be huge for them. Providence is squarely on the bubble and just trying to end up in the field, and a win like this over Creighton would be huge for them. So, it’s safe to say that this is a huge game for both teams. The Friars have lost two straight, and were beaten rather badly against Villanova in their last game, so this one feels kind of pivotal.

-NEBRASKA AT NORTHWESTERN (Big Ten). We have both teams inside the bubble, but both resumes are a little flimsy and could use some work to help strengthen them up. The one thing Nebraska needs more than anything is road wins, and tonight is a chance to get a big one. Northwestern has some big home wins already, and tonight would certainly add to that, and they’ve still got some work to do in order to be considered a lock, so this is a big one for both teams.

-TEXAS A&M AT MISSOURI (SEC). This is a game that TAMU needs to win. A win helps because it’s a road win, but a loss really hurts because it’s against a team that’s nowhere near the field, so it has an extremely pivotal feel to it.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

Georgetown @ Seton Hall (Big East) – Seton Hall is right on the bubble, while beating Georgetown at home wouldn’t be a huge win, losing to them would be a huge loss, so the Pirates need to hold serve

LSU @ Tennessee (SEC) – Tennessee has a real good chance of ending up as a #1 seed and needs to hold serve tonight against LSU

Wisconsin @ Michigan (Big Ten) – despite this being a road game, it should be a rather routine win for the Badgers, who are looking to bounce back after a tough loss to Purdue

Pittsburgh @ NC State (ACC) – both teams are outisde the bubble, but both could still potentially reach it if they’re able to finish the season strong

Valparaiso @ Indiana State (Missouri Valley) – If Indiana State can win out through the regular season, which they are good enough to do, they should be in position to get an at-large bid if they don’t win the MVC Tournament

Southern Illinois @ Drake (Missouri Valley) – it’s possible that Drake also lands inside the bubble, but they’ll pretty much need to win out in order to get there

Portland @ Gonzaga (West Coast) – Gonzaga can’t lose for the rest of the season. That’s pretty much their story

Appalachian State @ Texas State (Sun Belt) – I think App State can be a bubble team if they can win out, which I think they are good enough to do

Notre Dame @ Duke (ACC) – it’s technically a conference game, but it’s practically a guy game. Duke should roll at home.

Georgia @ Mississippi State (SEC) – most have Mississippi State inside the bubble, but I still think that until they win a few road games they shouldn’t be considered. Either way, they need to avoid a loss at home tonight
