Under the Radar Game of the Day – Wednesday, January 3rd

Evansville (10-3, 1-1) at Indiana State (11-2, 2-0) – 7:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day was prepared to write up Round 1 of the Winwood Cup between Longwood and Winthrop, but we have an even better matchup in the Missouri Valley Conference between the Evansville Aces and the Indiana State Sycamores (aka the Trees). ISU is coming off of only their second loss of the year against Michigan State on the road, but the Trees came into that game with a 9-game winning streak. They had a blowout win at home against Southern Illinois to highlight that winning streak; Isaiah Swope had 22 points for ISU in that game.

Not much was expected initially of Evansville this year, but the Aces began their season on a 6-game winning streak. The highlight was an 85-77 victory at Chattanooga where Ben Humrichous scored 25 points in an overtime victory for Evansville. Their lone victory in conference play so far has been a 2-point win at home against Northern Iowa.

The Hoops HD Report (Jan 2nd)

Happy New Year Everybody!!

Chad and the panel are back for the first Hoops HD podcast of the new year, and we cover a lot as conference play is now getting in to full swing. It was also a busy end of the year with three major upsets in Notre Dame’s blowout over Virginia, Stanford’s blowout over Arizona, and Florida Atlantic’s loss at Florida Gulf Coast. We look at all three of those, as well as how much Gonzaga seems to now be struggling. The Mountain West has as many as six teams that could land inside the bubble, and a couple who may be on pace to earn protected seeds. Houston is tops in nearly every predictive metric, and we discuss them and how strong the entire Big 12 is. The ACC and Big East have big weeks this year, and we break all of that down. We discuss all that, and more…

And, for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

-We will be recording our Hoops HD Report Video Podcast tonight, and then Under the Radar and the Bracket Rundown tomorrow. Be sure to be on the lookout for those.

-The biggest surprise in the latest string of big surprises was Stanford’s 100-82 win over Arizona on New Year’s Eve. It was a home game, but Stanford had shown no signs of being anything other than bad, and Arizona was showing signs of being a Final Four caliber team. I guess the Wildcats just started celebrating a little too early.

-Utah downed Washington 95-90 in a hard fought game. Washington has now fallen to 8-5, and lost two straight in conference, but I’m still not ready to count them out. The losses were hard fought games on the road against Utah and Colorado, both of whom are really good (especially at home), so I think the Huskies have it in them to start stringing together wins.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-UTAH STATE AT AIR FORCE (Mountain West). It’s the MWC opener for both of these teams. Utah State is off to a very impressive 12-1 start and looks like an NCAA Tournament team, while Air Force is 7-5 and a respectable 3-1 at home. For Utah State, it’s a road game that an NCAA Tournament caliber team should be able to win, but it is still a bit of a test.

-PURDUE AT MARYLAND (Big Ten). Purdue is clearly the more accomplished team, but Maryland is an impressive 8-0 at home, and as good as Purdue is they lost their only true road game of the season so far to Northwestern, so there is something at stake for the Boilers in this one.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT PITTSBURGH (ACC). UNC is in the top ten, and rightfully so, but this is a big road test against a Pitt team that is pretty good, but who still needs to build their resume up and who can really take a big step toward doing that with a win tonight.

-WAKE FOREST AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC). Both teams still have work to do, but amazingly enough both teams come into this one at 9-3 and at least have a path to land inside the bubble. They both could really use this win tonight, though, which is what makes the game so compelling.

-BUTLER AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East). Both teams are having good seasons so far, and both have shown the potential to end up as NCAA Tournament teams. Butler is looking to bounce back from an overtime loss at Providence where they just missed out on what would have been a huge win for their resume, and Saint John’s is coming off of a game where they struggled to get by Hofstra, but where they were right in there against UConn in the game before.

-NORTHWESTERN AT ILLINOIS (Big Ten). This should be a fun one. It appears to be a mismatch with Illinois being both at home and ranked in the top ten, but Northwestern has shown they can play like a top 25 caliber team, and it’s a rivalry game, so there are several reasons to watch.

-SYRACUSE AT DUKE (ACC). Syracuse is 10-3 on the season, but it’s a bit of a quiet 10-3. It will get a lot noisier if they’re somehow able to go into Cameron and upset the Blue Devils. Duke has won four straight and has also been playing very well at home.

-NEW MEXICO AT COLORADO STATE (Mountain West). This is one of the better games of the day. Both teams come into this one at 12-1 and while Colorado State is much higher in the rankings, New Mexico could pick up what would probably be their biggest win of the year so far and perhaps ride that to a top 25 ranking themselves. Both teams are likely tournament teams, and this one is a big resume building opportunity.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES/BUY GAMES:

-DePaul @ Connecticut (Big East) – it’s a conference game, but it might as well be a buy game
-Norfolk State @ Tennessee
-East Carolina @ Florida Atlantic (American) – FAU should be able to bounce back from the surprising loss to FGCU in their last game
-Iowa @ Wisonsin (Big Ten) – Iowa has struggled all throughout this season, especially on the road. Wisky should be able to hold serve in this one
-Cornell @ Baylor – this one is somewhat intriguing because of Cornell’s 10-2 record, but it’s still a buy game and still a game that Baylor should roll through
-Chicago State @ Kansas State
-Penn @ Auburn
-Illinois State @ Drake (Missouri Valley) – Drake can get to 12-2 on the season with a win

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Tuesday, January 2nd

Belmont (9-4, 2-0) at Southern Illinois (9-4, 1-1) – 8:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day has Belmont make the trip along Interstate 24 to Carbondale, Illinois for a trip to Southern Illinois. Belmont comes into tonight having won 7 of their past 8 games; they’ve opened up play in the Valley with conference wins against Northern Iowa at home and against Valparaiso on the road. Cade Tyson averages 17.8 points a game for the Bruins.

The Salukis had rough sailing in their conference opener with a 29-point loss to Indiana State. Recently, they’ve put together a modest 3-game winning streak that includes a home win against Illinois-Chicago to improve to 1-1 in the Valley. Southern Illinois also has wins against Saint Louis and Oklahoma State in nonconference play. Xavier Johnson is averaging a whopping 24.6 points a game for the Salukis.

Bracketology – Hoops HD Staff Bracket

This week, our colleague John Stalica will be filling out the weekly NCAA Tournament bracket on Hoops HD. This is not to be confused with the bracket that Jon Teitel does weekly where he attempts to forecast what the Selection Committee will do. This is rather more of a checkpoint bracket that John sees fit as of games played through Monday, January 1.

The bracket is as follows:

First Four Out: NC State, Boston College, Drake, Louisiana Tech

NOTES FROM JOHN:

  • Purdue’s top of the profile gives them a slight edge over Kansas and Houston for the top overall seed. Arizona’s recent losses to Florida Atlantic (in Las Vegas) and at Stanford knock the Wildcats off the top seed line for now.
  • What a difference a year makes for Clemson. They’ve cashed in on wins at Alabama and at Pittsburgh, and even home wins against South Carolina and Boise State are boosting the metrics for the Tigers. Contrast this to North Carolina who hasn’t even played a true road game yet.
  • Dayton is in a protected seed spot that typically has feen filled by Gonzaga in recent years. Today I would have actually had Gonzaga as my first 11 seed, but I had to flip them up to the 10 line and Michigan State down to the 11 line.
  • Other bracketing issues include juggling BYU in the East Region (however there’s a bug in the workbook that has the wrong dates for Spokane and Salt Lake City; I may redo the bracket once Chad fixes this). The play-in game on the 13 line had to be moved down to accomodate potential conference matchups in the 1st round. Also keep in mind that Weber State could have been placed in SLC, but Colorado State cannot be placed in a potential home court disadvantage; Weber State is about 30 miles north of Salt Lake and would effectively fill the place.
