Under the Radar Game of the Day – Saturday, December 30th

Cal State-Northridge (10-3, 1-0) at Long Beach State (9-4, 1-0) – 4:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day heads to the Walter Pyramid where Long Beach State hosts the improved Cal State-Northridge Matadors. Aboubacar Traore had a rare 20-20 game in which he had 23 points and 22 rebounds in the Beach’s 81-71 victory at Cal State-Fullerton to open play in the Big West. In nonconference play, Beach had wins against 3 power programs – DePaul (albeit in name only), Michigan and USC – all away from home.

Cal State-Northridge is another team that’s improved greatly from last year; they came into conference play with a 4-game winning streak. The major highlight was a 76-72 win at UCLA; the Matadors proved it was not a fluke by also beating Montana State at home and opening Big West play with a 10-point win at Cal Poly. De’Sean Allen-Eikens averages just under 20 points a game for CSUN.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Friday, Dec 29th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-UCLA needed a second half comeback, but they did go on the road and got a 69-62 win at Oregon State. It’s certainly not the greatest win in the world, but it’s important because it ended a four game losing streak, it was a road win, it was the conference opener, and it was the first home loss for Oregon State. UCLA may not be turned all the way back around yet, but at least they’ve perhaps at least started to turn.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-EVANSVILLE AT CINCINNATI. Both teams have good records, but both also have weak schedules. Both are 10-2, but neither have done much of anything in terms of beating good teams. Even though this is a home buy game for Cincinnati, it would still be one of their better wins to date if they’re able to pull it off.

-MCNEESE AT MICHIGAN. McNeese is a really good team that plays in a really bad Southland Conference. Our expectation is that they will not just blow through that conference, but run the table. The problem is there is virtually no one left on their schedule that’s a top 250 caliber team after today, so this is their last chance to get a win with any sort of a substance. Michigan is a somewhat disappointing 6-6, but they were super competitive against Memphis, Oregon, and Florida, so they can play at a higher level than what their record indicates. Having said that, they better not overlook McNeese tonight.

-UNC GREENSBORO @ TEXAS. UNCG is a strong team that appeared to be on cruise control with a good win against Arkansas on their resume, but they’ve struggled in their last four games, all of which were against weak teams, and they lost two of them. They’ve got a chance to turn that around in a big way tonight against a Texas team that is still in the rankings (for whatever reason), but that has really not looked like a top 25 team at any point this year. The Horns do not want to overlook UNCG in this one.

-KENT STATE AT SAINT MARY’S. Just when we thought SMC was starting to turn it around, they lose at home to Missouri State just before Christmas. They face a Kent State team that’s expected to make quite a bit of noise in the MAC this year, and it’s a game the Gaels cannot afford to lose.

-WASHINGTON STATE AT UTAH (Pac 12). This is a tough conference opener for Wazzu, who is a somewhat impressive 9-2 on the season, but doesn’t have any wins that come close to being as big as this one would be if the Cougars can pull it off. Utah has won six straight and appears to be playing at a high level. They should be able to get it done on their home court tonight.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT GONZAGA. This is a big showcase game and resume opportunity for two teams that are good, but who also may not be as good as they’d like to be at this point. A win in a game like this would be huge for either team. Gonzaga’s conference is somewhat down this year, so other than a game against Kentucky in February this is perhaps thier last shot at a notable win. San Diego State’s best win to date is probably against Washington, so this would be a hugely important quality win for them if they an pull it off.

-WASHINGTON AT COLORADO (Pac 12). Washington has been a bit of a surprise this year with an 8-3 overall record and some nice wins on their resume. This will be a huge challenge against a Colorado team that’s 9-2 and that has often played like a top 25 caliber team. It’s very possible/probable that we will see both teams dancing come March.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES/BUY GAMES:

-North Florida @ Miami FL – many have sort of forgotten about the Canes, but they’re 9-2 overall and every bit as dangerous as they’ve ever been this season
-Kennesaw State @ Indiana – another home buy game for Indiana
-Eastern Kentucky @ Purdue
-Illinois State @ Kentucky – Kentucky normally really kicks it into gear after Christmas, so I think they’ll roll in this one
-Radford @ Clemson
-Northern Illinois @ Iowa – both teams have underperformed somewhat, one on a UTR scale and the other on a B1G scale
-Northern Kentucky @ Purdue Fort Wayne (Horizon League) – a win for PFW gets them to 12-2 on the year and keeps them unbeaten in league play
-Maine @ Minnesota – Minnesota’s schedule has been weak and they still got a ton of work to do, but a win does get them to 10-3
-Loyola MD @ Saint Joseph’s
-Bethune Cookman @ UCF
-South Carolina State @ Nebraska – A win for the Huskers gets them to 11-2, but most of those have come against weak teams
-Charleston Southern @ North Carolina
-Jackson State @ Northwestern – Northwestern should get this one, but the Tigers did win at Mizzou earlier this year.
-Fairliegh Dickinson @ Illinois
-Adams State (nonD1) @ Colorado State
-Utah Valley @ Boise State – Boise State still has potential, but they need to start stringing together wins
-Arizona @ California (Pac 12) – should be a routine bounce back win for Arizona, even though it’s a conference road game

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Friday, December 29th

Northern Kentucky (7-6, 2-0) at Purdue-Fort Wayne (11-2, 2-0) – 7:00 PM (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day goes up to Fort Wayne where the hometown Mastodons host the perennial Horizon League contender NKU Norse. The Norse are not only coming off of a big loss at Saint Mary’s prior to the holiday break, they also learned that one of their leading players Sam Vinson suffered a torn ACL in the game and is now out for the remainder of the season. Marques Warrick becomes even more pivotal – he’s averaged over 18 points a game for the Norsw and will likely be the first, second and third priority on opposing teams’ scouting reports.

Fort Wayne comes into tonight’s game having gone 1-2 against power conference foes; they beat DePaul in their season opener and also had losses to San Francisco and Pittsburgh along the way. They already have wins against Green Bay and Oakland in conference play, but now begin a 3-game homestand against a pair of contenders in NKU and Wright State. The Mastodons have a more balanced attack with four players averaging at least 12 points a game.

For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day, which is a big one out of the Big Sky – CLICK HERE

-After a short break for Christmas, the games are starting to get started back up. Virginia blew out Morgan State yesterday in a home buy game. Prior to that on Christmas Eve TCU picked up their first true road win, and probably their best overall win of the season, as they knocked off Hawaii in the Diamond Head Classic 3rd place game 65-51. Nevada is now 12-1 on the year after winning the Diamond Head Classic and looked pretty good against an 8-4 Georgia Tech team that we should probably start paying a little bit of attention to as ACC play starts up.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-USC AT OREGON (Pac 12). USC has underperformed so far, but they still have a lot of talent and are good enough to start stringing together wins in league play and get things turned around. Winning on the road at Oregon won’t be easy, but if they can pull it off it would be huge for them both on and off paper.

-UCLA AT OREGON STATE (Pac 12). UCLA has been one of the bigger disappointments of the season so far, and a team that I thought would easily land inside the bubble is now so far away from hit that it’s easy to want to just write them off entirely. They have lost five of their last six, but they’ve also been competitive against teams like Marquette, Gonzaga, Villanova, and Ohio State this year, so most of their losses aren’t terrible. This is a winnable conference road game, and it’s one they need to get if they want to start working their way back toward the bubble. Oregon State has won five straight, but all were home buy games against teams that are weak even by UTR standards.

-UC RIVERSIDE AT UC IRVINE (Big West). We at Hoops HD love the RiverVine Cup! (Also the Big West opener for both teams)

-Central Arkansas @ Oklahoma
-Coppin State @ Maryland
-Sam Houston @ Texas Tech

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Thursday, December 28th

Montana (7-4, 0-0) at Weber State (7-4, 0-0) – 9:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

After a hiatus for a few weeks, the UTR Game of the Day returns with Big Sky conference play tipping off tonight. A pair of contenders meet tonight in Ogden, Utah for a matchup between the Montana Grizzlies and the Weber State Wildcats. While Montana comes into tonight at 4-4 against D1 competition, 3 of the losses come against perennial NCAA Tournament regulars like Oregon, Houston and Nevada on the road. More recently, Montana is on a 5-game winning streak that includes a pair of wins against San Jose State. Aanen Moody is averaging 15.4 points a game, including a 21-point outing in their second win against SJSU.

Weber State was able to get a significant road win off the bat with a 61-57 win at Saint Mary’s back in November; it seemed like a big upset at the time but the Wildcats have been more consistent than the aforementioned Saint Mary’s team, for example. More recently, Weber State had n 84-71 win at Wyoming where Dyson Koehler led the Wildcats with 19 points.

Under the Radar (Dec 27th)

It is our last podcast of 2023! Tonight’s feature conference is the MAC, and the reason we feature it is because of how we think it has underperformed. Akron has a decent overall record, but their overall resume is hurting. Ohio U has also dealt with injuries and that has effected their play. Still, we think it will be an exciting league once it gets rolling.

From there, we move on to the other 21 UTR leagues and talk about how we think Weber State and Montana are the teams to beat in the Big Sky, Appalachian State had a surprising loss, but should still be able to challenge James Madison out in the SoCon, the Ivy League has seven good teams in it and should be setting itself up for its most exciting season in years, McNeese State should dominate the Southland and could finish with more than 30 overall wins. We talk about all that, and more! And, as we do every week, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…
