The Hoops HD Report – Monday, Jan 23rd

We’ve got a stacked panel tonight to review a busy week in college basketball and look ahead to yet another busy week.  We spend a little time debating whether Alabama or Purdue should be the top ranked team, we look at the Big 12 and how as many as six teams could end up as protected seeds, we discuss TCU’s huge blowout win at Kansas, we look at two other shocking losses with Houston losing at home to Temple and Gonzaga losing at home to LMU. We preview a big week for the SEC as they go into the Big 12/SEC Challenge.  The Mountain West has several teams hovering around the bubble, and we debate what the actual strength of the league is with some of us thinking it’s a mirage and others thinking it’s strong.  All that, and more!!

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show….

Hoops HD Bracket Projections (From David Dorman) – Monday, Jan 23rd

David Dorman’s comments on the bracket are posted below…

NOTES ON THE BRACKET (From David Dorman):

We are under 50 days until Selection Sunday and there are a ton of games this week that will shape this year’s bracket.

I had a really hard time placing the teams right on the cut line. The resumes look similar. Some good wins at home, not much on the road. With teams right on the cut line I like to look for road wins that are tough to get. I like to see a team win in buildings where most visitors walk out losers. Show me something on your resume no one or few others have. Northwestern went to Bloomington and beat Indiana and went to East Lansing and beat Michigan State. Only Northwestern and Purdue have gone into Michigan State this year and left victorious.Northwestern is the only team in the country this year to win at Indiana this year. To me this shows Northwestern can win big tough games. I gave the Wildcats one of my last at large berths because of these road wins.

The last 4 schools to make my bracket today were:

Maryland
West Virginia
Arizona State
Northwestern

Just missed my bracket:

Penn State
Pitt
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State

There are 3 Big Ten teams and 3 Big 12 teams on those 2 lists. These teams can’t afford to lose at home and pulling off a stunner on the road is highly advised.

I had Houston on the 1 line until last night’s home stunning loss to Temple. The Tennessee Volunteers moved up to 1 line with Houston’s loss.

LOOK OUT 5 seeds, the best under the radar teams are coming after you. Oral Roberts, Charleston, Kent State all currently sit on the 12 line and are very capable of winning multiple games in the NCAA Tournament. If any of these 3 team’s stumble in their conference tournaments there will be long and difficult decisions in the committee room. Should they receive an at large bid? What seed line do they deserve? They all have resumes worthy of at large bids.

Maybe the best under the radar team is Dusty May’s Owl’s from Florida Atlantic.  They are 19-1 and running away with Conference USA’s regular season title. I have them as a 7 seed today and I could see them receiving a 5 or 6 seed if they win out. 1 loss will not change my thoughts on this team, they are at large worthy today and a loss or two won’t change that.

Teams that have risen in my bracket lately:

Kansas State
Marquette
TCU
St. Mary’s
Indiana
Rutgers
Iowa State

Teams in my bracket but cold lately:

Illinois
Gonzaga
Wisconsin
Arkansas

Huge games for the bracket this week:

Wisconsin @ Northwestern 1/23

Ohio State @ Illinois 1/24

Kansas State @ Iowa State 1/24

Xavier @ UConn 1/25

Iowa @ Michigan State 1/26

UCLA @ USC 1/26

Enjoy the games, Selection Sunday is coming fast.

COMMENTS FROM CHAD:

– I have said it before and I will say it again — I just don’t get all the love for Tennessee’s profile.  The Vols have only one win over a team solidly in the field (Kansas — so it is a very good win).  They have a loss to a team that is near the bottom of the at-large field (Kentucky) and a team nowhere near the field (Colorado).  That’s a solid profile, and a top 4 seed, but nowhere near the 1 line in my opinion.

– I like TCU better than the 5 line, maybe as high as a 3 seed.  Yes, they have a very bad home loss to Northwestern State, but they won AT Kansas, AT Baylor, and beat Kansas State as well.  That is three wins over protected seeds, to go along with wins over Iowa and Providence.  Quite frankly, that is way more than Tennessee has done.

– I think Boise State belongs in the field, but not as an 8 seed.  The Broncos have three losses to teams that are not in the field (one is a horrible one at home to South Dakota State).  They do not have a single win over a team that actually made the field.  Yes, their 7 Tier 2A wins is impressive, but that gets you in as an 11 or 12 seed at best, and probably going to Dayton for the First Four.

– Illinois has not lost to anyone that missed David’s field other than his top team out, Penn State.  They have neutral court wins over UCLA and Texas.  That is deserving of several seed lines higher than a 9.  I could see them as high as a 5  or 6 seed right now.

– I also feel Wisconsin is undervalued.  The Badgers don’t have any really bad losses (most of them were to teams that made the field).  They won at Iowa and at Marquette as well.  I think they deserve to be 3-4 seed lines higher than a 10.

– I really cannot argue too much with the choices of teams.  I probably would not have Ohio State in right now, but it is hard to pick someone to replace them.  I like that Dorman left Pitt out — the Panthers are fading fast.  All in all, I think this was a good bracket — way better than the nonsense that Griggs posted last week.

COMMENTS FROM JOHN:

-Dorman was right in that Houston was not going to be a #1 seed after a bedwetting at home against Temple. I also agree with Chad in that it should not have been Tennessee getting the last #1 right now. I would actually have made the case for Kansas State given that they now have 2 road wins against protected seeds Texas and Baylor.

-Saint Mary’s is one of those teams that probably looks like a 5 seed when you see them play in person, but when I look at their resume they scream 7 or 8 seed to me. Their win against San Diego State is the only team that I feel confident putting in the field, and they also have losses against Colorado State and Washington that are eye-gougingly bad this year. Maybe split the difference and make them a 6?

-Arizona State picked a bad week to go winless; they are now 0-3 against 3 of the top teams in the Pac-12 at home (losses against USC, UCLA and Arizona). Now they almost have to get a road win against at least one of those teams just to feel safely in the field; I’m getting a lot more bearish against the Sun Devils. But not as much as Teitel probably is.

-We talk about 12 seeds being giant killers; #13 Marshall and #14 Seattle would also be good upset picks in a field like this. #14 Princeton would be pushing your luck.

Happy Anniversary! HoopsHD interviews former Kansas City coach Darrell Corwin

Darrell Corwin worked his way up the ladder at Kansas City: he started as an assistant professor in the Health and Physical Education Department in 1966, then became JV coach in 1969, then took over the varsity squad in 1973. By the time he left the sideline in 1980 he had won the most games in school history (118) and led the Roos to their 1st postseason tourney (in 1977). HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Coach Corwin about making the 1977 NAIA national tourney and being the winningest coach in school history. Today marks the 8th anniversary of his enshrinement into the UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame on January 23, 2015, so we take this time to honor his life/legacy.

How did you 1st get into coaching? At 1st I thought that I was going to become a football coach. I had a job lined up as a high school assistant but I got my Masters’ degree and there was an opening as a junior high school basketball coach. I later won an award there as assistant coach of the year and the head of the Physical Education department at UMKC offered me a job. I became an assistant to head coach Bill Ross and head of the JV team while also coaching the baseball team.

You became the varsity coach at Kansas City in 1973: why did you take the job? I was going to take a job at Longview JC. I told our athletic director that I was going to leave but he told me to give him 2 weeks: he decided to make me an offer so I stuck around.

You were known for having a fast-break offense and pressing defense: why did you choose to play that way, and what made it so effective? Our very 1st game was against a team that pressed us…and they beat our butts! From that point on we decided to always run: I was very much into conditioning and we were in very good shape. We were able to beat a lot of teams in the 4th quarter when our opponents would run out of gas. We pressed all the time, even if we were leading late in the game, but that was the only thing that we knew how to do.

In 1977 you led the team to the NAIA national tourney (the only postseason trip in school history): how close did you come to beating Grand Valley State? We were up on them until about 8 minutes left. Back then there was no 3-PT line or shot clock: I decided to keep running but our shots did not go in. Grand Valley ended up in the Final 4, which is where we thought we could reach. They had an All-American named Paul Peterman who got hot.

In 1980 you received the UMKC Chancellor’s Special Citation for athletic achievement: what did it mean to you to receive such an outstanding honor? There were not too many of those given out so it meant a lot. I was retiring and I appreciated it a lot.

You remain the winningest coach in school history: do you think that anyone will ever break your record? Oh yes, it will be broken someday. The AD and I always told each other that you had to dominate D-2 before going into D-1. I still wonder what the program could have done at the D-2 level…but the administration wanted to get into D-1 in a hurry.

After retiring you worked with the Special Olympics: how fulfilling was that part of your life? It was great. I worked 18 years for the county’s special recreation administrator. We started with 800 kids and soon ended up with 2400 kids. It was very fulfilling and a lot of fun.

When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most? That is hard to answer but I hope they look at me as a guy who could win. When we went on the road as an Independent it was very difficult because the other schools had their own Frank and Jesse James officiating crews! I really enjoyed the players: it was tough to not see them any more after I retired.

Under The Radar Game of the Day (and the rest of the Hoops HD Daily Rundown)- Monday, January 23rd

Norfolk State (13-6, 3-1) at Morgan State (10-9, 3-1) – 7:30 PM ET (ESPNU)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day heads to Charm City in Baltimore where the Morgan State Bears host the Norfolk State Spartans in a battle of MEAC leaders. The Spartans have won their first two road games in conference play, but those were against Delaware State and Coppin State. Sandwiched in between those two wins was a tough home loss against Howard – while it appeared that Joe Bryant Jr. hit a game-winning shot against Howard, a subsequent foul led to the Bison hitting 3 free throws in the final seconds to escape with an 86-84 victory.

Morgan State was on a 6-game winning streak that included wins in their first 3 conference games; that streak also came to an abrupt end against Howard. But one of the 3 wins did come against NC Central; Morgan State is one of 5 teams tied for first in the conference along with Norfolk State, Howard, NC Central and Maryland-Eastern Shore. Malik Miller averages 17.5 points a game and 9.8 rebounds a game for the Bears.

HOOPS HD DAILY RUNDOWN (From the Puppet):

-The most jaw dropping result from yesterday was Temple’s win at top ranked Houston 56-55.  Despite managing one of the best singular wins that any team will manage this season, Temple is probably still far too far from the bubble to actually reach it, but they have won six of their last eight and are playing really well, so they may be a dangerous team in the conference tournament.  Houston was terrible from the freethrow line and wasn’t all that much better from the floor.  They could still end up with a #1 seed if they win out, but as Rocco Miller observed, regardless of what seed they get, they will not be a fun tteam to face at any point of the NCAA Tournament.

-Purdue got a scare from Maryland at home, but held on to win 58-55, and Indiana got another nice win as they held of Michigan State 82-69.

-WISCONSIN AT NORTHWESTERN (Big Ten).  Northwestern is hovering around getting a protected seed, and winning a game like this on the road should help give their NET a boost as well as boost their overall profile.  Northwestern is inside our bubble, but a win like this could certainly help to move them further inside of it.

-DUKE AT VIRGINIA TECH (ACC).  Duke has just one road win on the season, so even though beating VA Tech may not seem all that exciting, it actually does add something to their resume that needs adding.

-KANSAS AT BAYLOR (Big 12).  Kansas has lost two straight and will be challenged again tonight, but even with the two losses they are still one of the top teams in the country and can still end up earning a #1 seed.  Baylor has been playing really well and is among the many teams in the Big 12 that’s within reach of a protected seed.  A win today puts it even more within reach.

-NEW MEXICO AT NEVADA (Mountain West).  New Mexico has been playing really well and is coming off a come from behind overtime win against a pretty good Boise State team.  They’ll really be challenged tonight by a Nevada team that’s unbeaten at home and that’s sitting squarely on the bubble.  A win like this could help make the difference as to whether or not they make the NCAA Tournament.

Chilling with the Colonials

HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will spend the upcoming months covering several Georgetown basketball home games, with (hopefully) a very special reward coming in March. Since the Hoyas were out of town this weekend, he decided to see how the other half lives at GW, so see below for his photo essay about the Colonials’ game yesterday against Dayton.

Based on the pregame meal the other half lives less well: bagels and water…plus they ran out of cream cheese! The good news is that I got to sit on the baseline, but the bad news is that the mop guy sat right in front of me. GW 1st-year head coach Chris Caputo did not beat a single top-200 team in non-conference play but has single-digit wins over UMass/George Mason this month as he prepared to face the highest-ranked team on his schedule all year in Dayton:

The Flyers are known for having great fans and there is a LOT of red in the crowd so let’s tip it off:

Dayton F Toumani Camara has only made 4 threes combined in his past 7 games but knocked down a pair of them in the 1st half while the rest of his team was struggling to score:

I had not seen GW FR F Maximus Edwards play at all this year but he was fantastic in the 1st half with a pair of dunks and a trio of shots from behind the arc. The last 1 came from the top of the key right before the buzzer to give his team a stunning 36-22 halftime lead:

Nope, wrong Maximus…

Nope, still the wrong 1…

There we go!
Flyers’ PF DaRon Holmes II (from the great state of Arizona) was bottled up in the 1st half due to getting double-teamed in the post. For some reason the Colonials stopped doing that after halftime and Holmes’ teammates found him inside for a variety of layups/dunks/put-backs as he finished with 14 PTS/10 REB:

I can make sense of most stats but here is 1 that boggles my mind: Dayton is just 1-3 this season when guards Kobe Elvis/Malachi Smith are both in the lineup but 12-3 when at least 1 of them is out, which has been the case since the day after Thanksgiving due to the injury bug hitting both guys. Smith finally got back onto the court this week and had a pair of 3-PT plays in the 2nd half while making all 5 of his FTs to finish with 12 PTS in 21 minutes:

Elvis has returned to the building…and looked good in his very 1st appearance in 2 months with a pair of threes and a layup to finish with 8 PTS in 13 minutes. I just hope that big brace on his right leg can keep him healthy:

After letting his freshman teammate take care of business in the 1st half, SR PG James Bishop took over in the 2nd stanza and was unstoppable on offense. He made a couple of long jump shots but mostly relied on his speed to get to the basket for a bunch of lefty layups as GW hung on to win 76-69 and improve to 4-2 in A-10 play:

In the GW postgame press conference (home team only this afternoon), I asked both Edwards and Bishop if they really thought they could win this conference (after finishing 8-9 in league play last year). The young stud jumped right in and said, “100%: everyone in the locker room thinks we can win it.” In contrast, the latter veteran explained that they just focused on 1 game at a time and would try to get better every day:

After someone else asked Coach Caputo about rebounding I followed up by noting that his team is now 9-1 when they out-rebound their opponent and 1-8 when they do not. He smiled and claimed that he would use that stat in practice on Monday, then shared a paraphrased version of 1 of his favorite Pete Carril quotes: “If you want good rebounders then recruit players who live near the train tracks.” He admits that some guys just have a knack for rebounding but if you cannot get the ball then at least box out your opponent so that 1 of your teammates can rebound instead:

That is a wrap from Foggy Bottom, but check back in a few days as I head back downtown for DePaul-Georgetown.

Bracketology 2023: March Madness Predictions (Version 4.0)

For today’s HOOPS HD DAILY RUNDOWN, where we preview all of today’s action and recap all of yesterday’s – CLICK HERE

We are only 7 weeks away from Selection Sunday as we continue to make our NCAA tourney predictions. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel correctly picked 67 of the 68 teams that made the 2022 tourney and each of his 67 of were within 1 spot of their actual seed, including 49 right on the money. He will spend the upcoming months predicting which 68 teams will hear their names called on March 12th. See below for his list of who would make the cut if they picked the field today and if you agree or disagree then feel free to tweet us. To see how he stacks up with other websites (ranked 12th out of 148 entries over the past 5 years), check out: www.bracketmatrix.com

NOTE FROM DAVID GRIGGS:  In a previous version of this post, Albany was listed as the #6 seed in the West instead of Duke.  This was my mistake when I built the bracket, and it was a rather silly one!!  I mean…Albany CLEARLY cannot be placed in Albany if the committee gives them a #6 seed!!  It has since been corrected.
