-Utah State lost their first game of the season, and it was in a big upset at home against Weber State 75-72.  Utah State appeared to have complete control in the first half, but then Weber dominated the second half, drew even, went ahead, and held a close lead for the remainder of the game.  BEEHIVE ACTION BABY!!!

-San Francisco, who appeared to be about as hot as anyone in the nation, lost inexplicably at home to UT Arlington 68-63.  This appeared to just be a blah buy game going into it, but the Dons were pretty much behind the whole way and looked nothing at all like the team we’ve seen over the past couple of weeks.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-DRAKE AT MISSISSIPPI STATE.  Mississippi State is unbeaten, but a lot of their wins have been quad 4 wins and they need some better ones to really solidify themselves.  Drake is a team we were big on coming into the year that has underperformed somewhat.  They’ve lost two straight, and neither team looks like they’re going to end up inside the bubble.  A win today would go a long way for Drake turning things around, but even with the win they’ll still have more work to do.

-GEORGETOWN AT UCONN (Big East).  UConn is unbeaten on the year and this is a game where they shouldn’t have too much trouble holding serve.

-DUKE AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  At times Wake has looked like a good team, but they’ve lost three of their last four and haven’t looked good at all during that stretch.  This is a winnable road game for a Duke team that will likely, once again, end up with a protected seed.

-MARQUETTE AT PROVIDENCE (Big East).  Marquette has been playing really well this year and has cracked the rankings.  They still have just one true road win on the season, so they’ll likely be tested by Providence today who is unbeaten at home, 9-3 overall, and who can also start to get the attention of the selection committee if they can string together some wins.

-NORTHWESTERN STATE AT BAYLOR.  This is a buy game, and it will likely end up being a mismatch, but Northwestern State has made a fair amount of noise this year with a win at TCU and another at home against Southern Miss.  Baylor isn’t going to want to overlook them, and if Northwestern State were to somehow pull this off we’d have to start thinking of them as a team that can land inside the bubble.

-VIRGINIA AT MIAMI FL (ACC).  Virginia is looking to bounce back from their first loss of the year, but this is a very tall order.  It’s a road game against a really good Miami team that is probably still being undervalued even though they’ve cracked the rankings.  Miami is also looking for some respect, so they should be fired up for this one.

-SETON HALL AT XAVIER (Big East).  Xavier should be able to hold serve in this one.  They’ve shown all the signs of looking like an NCAA Tournament caliber team so far.

-PITTSBURGH AT SYRACUSE (ACC).  Pitt has shown some signs of life.  This isn’t an easy game to win, but it’s the kind of game that tournament caliber teams should be able to win, so it will be interesting to see what they can do.

-FLORIDA VS OKLAHOMA (Jumpman Invitational, Charlotte NC).  You get the feeling that both teams really need this one.  Both have potential, but neither has big wins on their resume yet that cement that they belong inside the bubble, so tonight is a much needed opportunity for both of them.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Wofford @ Texas A&M
-TAMUCC @ Oklahoma State
-North Alabama @ Ole Miss
-Arlington Baptist (nonD1) @ Sam Houston
-Jackson State @ Alabama
-Elon @ Indiana
-Dartmouth @ UMass
-Montana State @ Arizona
-Montana @ Gonzaga
-Prairie View A&M @ New Mexico
-UIC @ Northwestern – UIC is a respectable 8-4, but Northwestern should roll in this one
-Harvard @ UC Irvine – UC Irvine should get the attention of the committee if they can hold serve in games like this and blow through the Big West, but as good as they are they’re running out of strikes
-UC San Diego @ San Diego STate

Harvard (7-4) at UC-Irvine (7-4) – 10:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day heads to the West Coast and warmer weather for a matchup between the hometown UC-Irvine Anteaters and the Harvard Crimson. Harvard had won 3 straight games after Thanksgiving but are now on a 2-game losing streak thanks to close losses against Fordham and UMass. Chris Ledlum averages 18.9 points a game and 7.6 rebounds a game.

Things were looking up for UC-Irvine after winning at Oregon in November and also winning a pair of games in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic against Nicholls and New Mexico State during Thanksgiving Break. Since then, the Anteaters have dropped 3 of 4 games – one of which was a loss against a bad Fresno State team at home. DJ Davis averages 15.2 points a game and is nearly automatic from the field; he shoots 45.6% from 3-point range and is a 91% free-throw shooter.

The Hoops HD Report – Dec 19th

The panel looks back at a very busy weekend that saw six match-ups between top 25 teams, and some other great games as well.  Kentucky has a history of not being as good before Christmas as they are after Christmas, and they fell to UCLA over the weekend.  It will be interesting to see if they start turning things around.  UCLA, along with Arizona and Arizona State in the Pac 12, are off to incredible starts and it’s shaping up to be a really exciting race in the Pac 12.  Many teams in the ACC continue to struggle, but North Carolina got a big win and some other teams are starting to play well in the top half of the league.  The Big 12 has a lot of good teams, but none appear to be able to catch Kansas.  UConn looks like they’re poised to run away from the Big East, and the Big Ten has topped ranked Purdue, but some surprise teams in both Wisconsin and Northwestern who continue to exceed expectations, along with some other top 25 teams.  The Mountain West has two unbeaten teams in Utah State and New Mexico, and couple of other strong teams in UNLV and San Diego State, and Memphis in the American is starting to make some noise.  They aren’t likely to catch Houston, but they can probably still make the field.  We discuss all that, and more…

And, if you’re looking for the Atlantic Ten, we do not discuss it!  They have been relegated to the Under the Radar Show.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Hoops HD Staff Bracket (From David Dorman) – Dec 19th

Bracket reflects all games played through December 18th.  David Dorman’s comments are below the bracket…

This is what the committee should do if the season ended today. These teams have earned spots for what they have accomplished on the court.

My last 1 seed came down to Kansas & Houston. I have been highly impressed with both squads but I gave the nod to Houston with the big road victory over the weekend in Virginia. Road wins in gym’s that rarely see the road team escape with victories goes a long way in my book. Not just on the top line but all seed lines and teams on the cut line. Some might think UCLA is a little high with the 2 early losses in Las Vegas but the win over Kentucky in MSG over the weekend got them to the 3 line.

Teams I am very impressed with that I did not think would be in my bracket 1 month ago (for either leading conference or at-large bid):  Charleston, Florida Atlantic, Sam Houston State, Mississippi State, James Madison, Yale, UMass Lowell, Southern Mississippi and Bradley.

Teams that I am stunned that are not in my bracket today:  Drake, Oregon, Michigan, USC, Oklahoma State, Florida and UAB.

The non conference schedule is coming to an end here with Exam Week and conference jockeying will begin in full next week.

Teams on the bubble that need to make noise quickly in my eyes are: Oklahoma, Boise State, LSU, Ole Miss, Central Florida and Colorado.

Happy Holidays and a Healthy New Year to everyone and their families. Have fun and enjoy the games as we are in the home stretch of 2022.

Under The Radar Game of the Day (and Other News, Notes, and Games) – Monday, December 19th

Grambling (6-4) at Liberty (7-4) – 7:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Lynchburg, Virginia is the place to be tonight for our UTR Game of the Day between the Grambling Tigers and the hometown Liberty Flames. Grambling began their D1 season with a bang with a win against Colorado in the Pac-12/SWAC Legacy Series, and they have subsequently shown that result was not a fluke, either. They also had a 3-game winning streak that included a win at Vanderbilt, although that streak came to an end with a loss at Virginia Tech. One-time Saint Louis player Carte’are Gordon leads the Tigers with 13.6 points a game and 7.6 rebounds a game.

While Liberty has put together a decent record, their only real wins of note so far have come against Bradley (in the Cancun Challenge) and against Bryant in Springfield, Massachusetts. No one could blame Liberty for losses against Alabama and Northwestern, but they missed out on what could have been quality wins against Southern Miss and at Oral Roberts. Darius McGee comes into tonight’s game averaging 21.5 points a game for Liberty.

OTHER NEWS, NOTES, AND GAMES (From the Puppet):

-Both Baylor and Texas had to sweat a little bit against some inferior competition, but both managed to hold serve and pick up the wins.

-USC knocked off Auburn 74-71, and is now back in the national spotlight.  Since losing their season opener to FGCU, they’re 9-2 with the only losses being close games to ranked teams, and they now have an impressive win against Auburn to add to their resume.  As for Auburn, they’ve now lost two of their last three after an 8-0 start.

-Georgia knocked off Notre Dame 77-62 and was pretty much in control for the whole game.  The Bulldogs are now 8-3 and are at least worth paying attention to as we wind down OOC play.

-New Mexico is now 11-0 as they beat Iona at home 82-74 to win this year’s edition of the Pitino Shootout.  They never really blew this game open, but it did feel like they were in control the entire way and every time Iona would go on a run or build up some momentum New Mexico would answer.

-Saint Mary’s, who had been playing really well, fell at home to Colorado State 62-60 in a bit of a surprise game.  It was a much needed win for a Colorado State team that had been a little disappointing, and a bit of a setback for SMC who appeared to have some momentum built up after winning three straight and playing really well against Houston just before that.

-Glenville State (nonD1) @ Marshall
-Charleston @ Coastal Carolina – Charleston can get to 12-1 on the season and pick up their 3rd true road win
-Weber State @ Utah State (Bee Hive) – Utah State looking to remain unbeaten on the season
-UT Arlington @ San Francisco

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Sunday, Dec 18th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Purdue actually had to sweat out Davidson, but finally got control late in the game and held on for the 69-61 win.  This should keep them at the top of the polls for now.

-Houston followed up their home loss to Alabama with one of the more impressive singular wins of the season that any team has managed.  They went into Virginia and in a tough defensive struggle had a lead for pretty much the entire game and escaped with a 69-61 win.  Virginia was ranked 2nd in the country and had some really big wins of their own, so for Houston to beat them on their floor is a statement that the Cougars are a legit #1 seed/Final Four caliber team.

-Gonzaga, who hadn’t looked quite as good as what most were expecting coming into yesterday, looked that good yesterday.  They knocked off an Alabama team in Birmingham 100-90 that was fresh off a win against Houston and had risen as high as 4th in the rankings.  It’s more of a boost for Gonzaga than it is a setback for Alabama.

-Tennessee had a lead for much of the game out at Arizona, but the Wildcats got control late and ended up with the 75-70 win.  It was still a good showing for Tennessee and failing to win on the road against a top ten team really isn’t that much of a failure.

-Kansas smashed Indiana 84-62 in a game that the Jayhawks pretty much controlled from tip to buzzer.

-UCLA is having a hell of a week.  After blowing out Maryland at Maryland they knocked off Kentucky 63-53 yesterday in MSG.  Every time Kentucky put together a run to shift momentum their way, UCLA had an answer.  UCLA’s only two losses are close games to highly ranked teams, and they’ve since dominated a couple of highly ranked teams, so I’d say UCLA is about as good as anyone this year.

-Nicholls nearly upset Mississippi State, and actually had a lead for a lot of the game, but the Bulldogs held on for a 68-66 win and remain unbeaten.

-North Carolina, who had been in a bit of a tailspin, got a much needed win yesterday as they held off Ohio State 89-84 in overtime.  It was a game that seesawed back and forth and after Ohio State hit what appeared to be a game winning shot at the end of regulation with 2 secs left.  North Carolina was able to tie it, and then got control in overtime.

-Missouri bounced back from their blowout loss to Kansas with a big win at UCF 68-66.  The game was close all throughout and Mizzou actually won it at the buzzer.  They’ll get more credit for this win than what most might realize because UCF is better than what most probably realize and they won’t lose too many games at home.

-Northwestern absolutely boat-raced DePaul 83-45 and continues to look like a tournament-caliber team.  Beating DePaul at home isn’t anything to get excited about in and of itself, but blowing them out and improving to 8-2 on the year is certainly noteworthy.

-San Francisco was behind UNLV for most of the game, but went on a late run to pull even, then pull ahead, and then stay ahead for a HUGE 75-73 win.  This is the best win of the year for San Francisco, and once again makes a statement that they are a tournament-caliber team.  It’s the first loss of the year for UNLV, and while it’s a setback, it hardly sinks them.  They’ll have a lot of really good chances at good wins once conference play starts.

-Utah fell at BYU 75-66.  They still got a good profile, but it could use some shoring up.  BYU, who we had kind of written off, has now won two straight and may be starting to turn themselves back around again.

-Memphis picked up another nice win as they held off Texas A&M 83-79.  The more I see from Memphis, the more solid I think they are.

-Saint Louis really needed a big win, and they held off Drake yesterday 83-75.  Both these teams have potential, and both had underperformed, so both really needed this one yesterday.  SLU got it, and while Drake still has the pieces to run through their conference, their margin for error is getting smaller and smaller.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-AUBURN AT USC.  USC has been playing better having won eight of their last ten with the only two losses being close games to Tennessee and Wisconsin, but they still don’t have a big time win on their resume yet.  This is a chance for them to really make a much needed statement.  As for Auburn, as good as they’ve looked this is their first true road game, so there is something at stake for them as well.

-NOTRE DAME VS GEORGIA (Holiday Hoopsgiving, Atlanta GA).  Both teams have shown signs of having potential, but both need more notable wins on their profiles.

-IONA AT NEW MEXICO.  On paper, it’s a game between a really good Iona team that needs a strong road win on their resume to get the attention of the committee, and a New Mexico team that comes into this one undefeated.  The obvious added spice is that it’s Rick Pitino vs Richard Pitino.  This one is important and it should be fun!

-COLORADO STATE AT SAINT MARY’S.  SMC has won three straight, and prior to that they nearly knocked off both Houston and San Diego State, so they are playing really well right now and should be able to hold serve in this one at home.  Colorado State is a team we thought had potential coming into the year, but just hasn’t shown it yet.  A win in a game like this could turn their whole season around, though.

OTTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Canisius @ Penn State
-Stanford @ Texas – this looks to be a big mismatch, but Texas’s off the court issues may continue to play a roll
-Western Michigan @ Iowa State
-Long Island @ James Madison
-McNeese @ Southern Miss – Southern Miss still with just one loss on the season
-Oakland @ Boise State
-Southern @ UAB
-Northern Colorado @ Colorado (Front Range) – We at Hoops HD Love the Front Range!!!
-California @ Santa Clara – Santa Clara shouldn’t have too much trouble getting to 11-3
-Buffalo @ West Virginia
-Mississippi Valley State @ TCU
-Alcorn State @ Seattle U
-San Diego @ Arizona State
-Washington State @ Baylor
