Incarnate Word (4-3) at Texas-San Antonio (4-3) – 7:30 PM ET (CUSA.tv)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to the San Antonio Shootout MTE hosted by UT-San Antonio; the final game features an intercity battle between the Cardinals of Incarnate Word and the UTSA Roadrunners. Incarnate Word already has a pair of wins in the MTE; they beat Dartmouth 69-64 on Friday and Grambling 63-61 yesterday. Josh Morgan scored 12 points off the bench in yesterday’s win against Grambling.

The Roadrunners will be looking to salvage one win out of the MTE; they lost by 20 against Grambling on Friday and lost a tough game in OT 78-77 against Dartmouth yesterday. Jacob Germany had 27 points for UTSA and became the 18th member of the school’s 1000-point club, but it was all in vain at least as far as yesterday’s game was concerned.

Happy Anniversary! HoopsHD interviews Mercer legend James Florence

There are plenty of great scorers in college basketball, and plenty of great shooters, and plenty of great stealers…but only a select few who can do it all. James Florence was 1 of those players for Mercer, as he graduated in 2010 with the most PTS (2287)/3PM (242)/STL (168) in school history. Hw was named all-conference for 4 straight seasons and was the 1st player in Atlantic Sun history to score 500+ PTS in 4 seasons. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with James about being a great scorer and being a great defender. Today marks the 13th anniversary of James having a 40-PT game on November 27, 2009, so we take this time to reflect on his amazing accomplishment.

In high school you were ranked as the 2nd-best PG in the state of Georgia (behind Javaris Crittenton): did you feel like you could compete with anyone? I always thought that I was good enough to play on the next level. In high school I was always surrounded by such great talent that I never showed all that I could do. I looked at it as an honor to be ranked the 2nd best PG in Georgia because there is a lot of talent coming out of our state each and every year.

Why did you choose to go to Mercer? Mercer was a school that came in at the start of my senior year after many of the bigger schools that had offered me scholarships later withdrew them. Coach Mark Slonaker said he was surprised that I was under-recruited and asked if I would be interested in Mercer. I listened to him and it sounded like a great situation for me. By then I was tired of the recruiting process, disappointed at all of the offers that had been withdrawn, and was just happy that someone wanted me/thought highly of me. They made it an easy decision for me even after some more schools came after me late.

In 2007 you were 1 of 3 freshmen to lead their respective conferences in scoring (along with future lottery picks Kevin Durant/Stephen Curry): did you think that you would follow in their superstar footsteps? I do not know about filling those exact shoes: those guys are established/great talents. I thought that I could definitely play on that level 1 day and contribute to a team. I just have to take it one step at a time.

On November 27, 2009, you scored a career-high 40 PTS/14-20 FG in a loss to Georgia Tech: was it just 1 of those scenarios where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were “in the zone”? A lot of those Power 5 schools do not want to draw up anything special for smaller schools like Mercer so I think they just left their guys on an island. When you play man-to-man defense and your opponent hits a few shots there is not much that you can do but hope that he cools down. I just got going early and felt like I was alone in the gym: just me and the ball and the rim.

You were named All-Atlantic Sun during each of your 4 years: how were you able to dominate throughout your college career? Trust: the trust that my coaches/teammates put in me and the time that they took to teach me the ins and outs of the game and show me how I could be the most effective. Both Coach Slonaker and Coach Bob Hoffman did a great job of that.

You finished your career as the all-time leading scorer in school history: did you realize at the time how prolific a player you were? I always thought that I was pretty good…but I did not walk into Mercer and check the record books and pick out which records I would break! About halfway through my career I saw that it was in reach but I never thought about it much.

You also had the most steals in school history: how were you able to balance your offense with your defense? I roamed a lot and just picked my spots to gamble. I was fortunate to play with Calvin Henry, who led our league in BLK for a couple of years. He would clean up a lot of my mistakes so I had enough freedom to gamble and I came up lucky a few times.

You played in the Portsmouth Invitational on a roster that included Wayne Chism/Raymar Morgan/Jerome Randle: how did you like the experience, and which of your teammates did you think would become the best pro? It was a great experience. I did not perform the way that I wanted to but it was a learning experience if anything. I thought that Kevin Palmer had the best chance to succeed in the NBA because of his length and his ability to do so many things besides score, but I knew that Jerome Randle was going to have a great career whether he stayed overseas or got to the League.

You were waived by the 76ers after missing most of training camp with a hamstring injury: how close did you come to making the team? It was a tough spot to get hurt on the 3rd day of training camp but I learned as much as I could from those guys. I do not know how the rest of the camp would have gone if I would have been healthy but I had a chance, which is all that I could ask for. Everyone on the team/staff was great…although hopefully that will not be the last time I am on the court with those guys! My agent Danny Servick and I looked into some opportunities in Europe and the NBDL (note: James is still playing pro basketball more than a decade after graduating). We just took our time and tried to find the best situation for me.

When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most? I want to be remembered as a guy who gave it everything he had every night and did everything possible to win: simple as that. Hopefully I will not become a distant memory anytime soon!

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Sunday, Nov 27th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Kent State had a lead on Houston with less than a minute to go, and I thought we were bracing for what would be the upset of the season, but Houston held on to win at home 49-44.  John Stalica summed this game up best.  It was a rock fight with boulders.  Houston will almost assuredly be ranked #1 in the next poll, and will likely remain there for quite some time.  Kent State is a good team, Houston didn’t play their best game, and still found a way to win.  REALLY good teams can beat other good teams even when they don’t play well, so for me personally, this isn’t an indictment on Houston’s potential at all.

-James Madison blew out South Dakota State 79-60 in a game played in Savannah GA.  The margin of victory is somewhat surprising.  JMU just controlled the entire game against a pretty good South Dakota State team.  While I thought James Madison was good, I’m now thinking they’re perhaps even better.

-Towson bounced back after an inexplicable loss two days ago with a win over South Alabama yesterday in the Hostile Hoops Community Classic.  The score was just 62-60.  South Alabama is a decent team, but they’re not a top 40ish caliber team like we thought Towson was just a few days ago.  Kind of a rough weekend for the Tigers.  They’ve had a rough time in an event we were all kind of expecting them to dominate.  They’ll face Mercer later on today.

-Bryant basically led Syracuse from tip to buzzer in their 73-72 win yesterday and controlled most of the game, but Syracuse came back at the end and nearly stole the victory.  This game saw multiple players ejected after a couple of guys traded slaps about midway through the first half, so the game was tense all throughout.  Bryant is now 5-1 on the year with two wins away from home, and future games against Tulane, Cincinnati, and Towson on the schedule for December.  Right now they look to be the best team in the America East, and dare I say, will have a shot at making a run at the bubble if they can pick up a few more wins like yesterday.  Syracuse isn’t THAT good, but teams who win at the Carrier Dome will get some credit for it.

-Drake put together what I thought was their best game of the season so far and picked up a 76-64 win against a pretty good Louisiana team.  It was Louisiana’s first loss of the year, and even though Drake was at home, they still (finally) looked like the top 40ish caliber team that we think that they are.  And, Drake is unbeaten.  So to look at an unbeaten team and say they’ve been underperforming…that’s a testament to what we think their potential is for this season.

-In the Emerald Coast Classic, TCU pretty much handled a pretty good Iowa team 79-66 in a game where it felt like they were in complete control for the entire second half.  Iowa was unbeaten and ranked 25th, so TCU after sleepwalking through some home buy games (and even dropping one of them) appears to have woken up and for the first time all year looked like the team that made the Sweet Sixteen a year ago.

HIGHLIGHED GAMES:

-OLE MISS VS OKLAHOMA (ESPN Events Invitational, Kissimmee FL).  Both teams have bloated records and a few semi-notable wins, but this would probably be the best win of the season so far for whichever team pulls it off.

-SAINT LOUIS AT AUBURN.  Saint Louis has a high ceiling, and while they haven’t always played up to it this season, it’s early and the potential for them to be really good is certainly there.  Having said that, picking up a win at Auburn is probably swinging above their weight class.  If it were to happen the Billikens would belong in the top 25 as this would be a protected seed caliber win.

-YALE AT COLORADO.  This game has an interesting storyline.  Yale is unbeaten at 6-0, and Colorado has beaten teams that are top ten caliber, but lost to teams that are mid-level SWAC caliber teams.  I just don’t know what to expect from this game today.

-NORTH CAROLINA VS ALABAMA (Phil Knight Invitational).  Both teams are coming off a loss, but as far as how this game will look on the team sheets that doesn’t mean anything.  It’s a top 20 match-up between two possible/probable protected seeds, and whoever wins this will get a ton of credit for doing so.

-DUKE VS PURDUE (Phil Knight Legacy).  Purdue has looked far more impressive throughout this event.  They’ve played better teams and beaten them more convincingly, so no matter what happens today Purdue should be ranked substantially higher than they currently are and have earned a ton of respect from the selection committee.  As for Duke, this would be their best win of the season by far up to this point.

-HOFSTRA VS QUINNIPIAC (Northern Classic, Laval PQ).  Quinnipiac is unbeaten on the year, and while they haven’t had any major tests yet, they are at least getting some decent quizzes out in this event.  Hofstra is a good team, but has dropped two straight, and a win today would go a long way toward getting them turned back around.

-MIAMI FL AT UCF.  This is a great game.  Miami FL team that I still think will end up in the top 20 by the end of the year and once everyone remembers they were in the Elite Eight last year and have most of their team back.  UCF comes in at 5-1 with some nice wins already, and can make a big statement today.  Being at home should also give them a boost.

-XAVIER VS GONZAGA (Phil Knight Legacy).  Gonzaga is looking to bounce back from a game against Purdue where they really got their noses bloodied, and Xavier is looking to pick up their first notable win of the year.

-IOWA STATE VS UCONN (Phil Knight Invitational).  Iowa State has been the biggest surprise of this tournament, and win or lose they should be in the top 25 next week.  If they can manage a win against a UConn team that looked fantastic the other night against Alabama, then they’ll probably end up as a protected seed in our next bracket projections.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Memphis vs Stanford (ESPN Events Invitational, Kissimmee FL) – Memphis needs to hold serve in this one
-Stetson vs Campbell – Stetson has a couple decent wins and can pick up their 3rd road win of the season today
-SEMO vs UC Davis (Milwaukee WI) – both teams 4-1
-Harvard @ Fordham – both teams 5-1 (somehow)
-Maine @ Brown – Maine is much better than expected, and while we don’t expect it to continue, we’re going to enjoy it while we can!  A win today gets them to 5-1 on the year and gives them their THIRD road win!
-Wofford @ LSU – LSU should be able to hold serve, but so far Wofford has been a little better than expected
-Villanova vs Oregon (Phil Knight Invitational) – both these teams need this win just to get their seasons turned back around
-Boston U @ Milwaukee – Boston has just one loss on the year and is looking for their second road win
-Mercer vs Towson (Savannah GA) – It is very important that Towson gets this win and rebounds from their inexplicable loss on Friday
-Siena vs Seton Hall (ESPN Events Invitational) – Seton Hall better not overlook this Siena team that’s been playing well recently
-Portland vs Michigan State (Phil Knight Invitational) – Michigan State looking to hold serve, but are playing a de facto road game in Portland’s arena. We may also have to really take notice of the Pilots if they pull off another victory here
-UNC Wilmington vs North Texas (Nassau Championship) – North Texas can get to 6-1 and has some decent wins away from home on their profile
-Florida vs West Virginia (Phil Knight Legacy) – both teams have decent records, but could use some decent wins

BUY GAMES:

-Prairie View A&M @ Oklahoma State
-Mobile (nonD1) @ Southern Miss – Southern Miss is good, but they did themselves no favors scheduling so many nonD1 teams
-Alcorn State @ Arizona State – Arizona State has just one loss this season, but it was to a SWAC team, so…
-Bellarmine @ UCLA
-Northern Colorado @ New Mexico

Under The Radar Game of the Day – Sunday, November 27th

UNC-Wilmington (4-3) vs. North Texas (5-1) – 8:00 PM ET (FloHoops)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day brings us to the championship game of the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship Game between the Mean Green of North Texas and the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks. UNT has been a frequent contender in our UTR Top 10 in recent years; ever since a loss at Saint Mary’s early in the season, the Mean Green have been on a four-game winning streak. In their tournament so far, UNT has beaten San Jose State and Long Beach State; both Kai Huntsberry and Abou Ousmane had at least 20 points in their previous game against The Beach.

UNC-W comes in to today’s game with buy game losses against North Carolina, Oklahoma and UConn, but they have rebounded nicely in the tournament with wins against Missouri State and Vermont so far. In the game against the Catamounts, UNC-W trailed 51-37 in the 2nd half before a 16-0 run helped the Seahawks to a comeback win that was a staple of their previous season.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Saturday, Nov 26th

NEWS AND NOTES:

For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Lots happened yesterday, but I’ll start off with what was probably the biggest surprise/upset of the day that very few people are aware of.  Unbeaten Towson, who had looked fantastic every time they had taken the floor this year, lost to winless Fairfield 74-69.  This doesn’t totally derail Towson by any means because it is just one game, but it is still a really bad result and if they end up squarely on the bubble this loss could make the difference as to whether or not they get selected.  Seriously…WHAT IN THE HELL HAPPENED!!??

-Tennessee opened it up in the second half against Kansas and won the game 64-50 without even really having to sweat.  Sometimes a team just forgets to show up for an early season game, and I guess that’s what happened when the Vols lost to Colorado.  They once again look like the top 10 caliber team that we were expecting.

It was a crazy day out in Portland at the Phil Knight Invitational Legacy Classic Thingy that they have going on out in Portland!!

-Iowa State, a team that started off unranked and expected to finish pretty close to the bottom of their league (for the second year in a row), has gotten off to a fantastic start and surprised us all (for the second year in a row).  They took down top ranked North Carolina 70-65 out in Portland at the semifinals of the Phil Knight Invitational, which will be a great win on their resume and boost them into the top 25.

-Gonzaga is NOT looking like the top ten team we were expecting.  They suffered their second loss of the year as they fell to Purdue (who’s good, but not many were expecting them to be as good as Gonzaga), 84-66 in the Phil Knight Legacy.  This is the second showcase game Gonzaga has been blown off the floor.  That’s not to say that they won’t improve as the year goes on, but right now they hardly look like a Final Four team.  On the other hand, Purdue looked like a fantastic team and should move up in the rankings.

-Also in the Phil Knight Legacy, Duke had to sweat for the second day in a row, but they got by Xavier 71-64.  Xavier has played well in their two losses, but at the end of the day they were still losses.  They’ll get plenty of chances to pick up big wins this year, though, and if they keep playing like they have been sooner or later they’ll get the wins they need.

-Michigan State bounced back from their loss as they held off an Oregon team that’s really been struggling this year 74-70.  Michigan State moves into the 5th place game of the Phil Knight Invitational as Oregon moves into the 7th place game to try and avoid an 8th place finish.

-UConn had one of the more surprising and impressive showings of the day.  I was really big on this Alabama team (and still am), and Connecticut just ran them over 82-67 to move on in the Phil Knight Invitational

-Iowa really had to sweat, but they got past Clemson 74-70 after some clock operating mishaps, which weren’t helped at all by a TV crew that inexplicably did not understand that a shot clock, while not displaying tenths of a second (3.7 left on the shot clock still appears as 3), still measures that time.  That’s why the clock “didn’t appear to start on time” but actually did.  SHEESH!!!!  Anyway, another takeaway from this is that Clemson played really well and is perhaps better than we expected, and that those who thought Iowa was a top 25 team are being proved correct.

-Wisconsin held off USC in the Battle 4 Atlantis 3rd place game 64-59.  USC dropped a couple of games in this event, but they do appear to be playing better.  Wisconsin also played really well and picked up some wins that will end up looking pretty good on their resume.

-Davidson handed San Francisco their first loss of the season in an 89-80 win on their home court.  San Francisco had picked up some pretty nice wins already, and while this loss doesn’t hurt them, a win would have certainly added another notable win to their profile.  As for Davidson, they’re looking pretty good with just one loss on the year.  That’s not something you can say about anyone else in their league right now.

-An Under the Radar team that we haven’t talked much about in the past few…well…decades is Denver, but with their win at New Orleans yesterday they are now 6-1 on the year with two true road wins.  Not bad!

-Saint Bonaventure gave Notre Dame their first loss of the season 63-51, which means we no longer have to say that Notre Dame is a good team that hasn’t lost a game yet.

-Oklahoma has improved to 5-1 after their 77-64 win over Seton Hall. Their only loss remains their opener to Sam Houston, and Sam Houston is looking like they are legit good, so maybe the Sooners are as well after all.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-JAMES MADISON VS SOUTH DAKOTA STATE (Savannah GA).  James Madison is off to a really strong start and is one of the teams to watch in the Sun Belt this year.  South Dakota State is 3-3, but they’ve played a tough schedule and should make quite a bit of noise once they get into Summit League play.  In short, this is a good match-up between to good UTR teams, and JMU may be good enough to make a run at the bubble.

-KENT STATE AT HOUSTON.  Kent State is a really strong UTR team, and it goes without saying that a win in this one would catapult them into the national spotlight and certainly position them to land inside the bubble.  That isn’t likely to happen, though.  Houston will almost assuredly move to #1 in both polls with a win today, and it’s very possible that they will remain there for the remainder of the season.  A loss to Kent State won’t hurt them at all.  They can still make a run at the bubble.

-LOUISIANA AT DRAKE.  This is a HUGE game between two unbeaten teams that can make a run at the bubble.  Drake hasn’t looked quite like a top 40ish caliber team like we thought they’d be this season, but they have still won all their games and they still have a very high ceiling.  Louisiana has been a little more of a surprise, but already has some good wins on their resume.  This one is going to be fun, and it’s also a big deal because both teams need wins like this on their resumes, but have limited opportunities to get them.

-IOWA VS TCU (Emerald Coast Classic, Niceville FL).  Iowa is unbeaten on the year and coming off a hard fought win against Clemson.  TCU has just one loss, but they haven’t looked anything like the team we thought they would so far.  They haven’t really faced a big test like this yet either.  They’ve just flunked what should have been some easy quizzes.  Maybe today the Horned Frogs will snap out of it and look like the top 25 team we were all expecting.

-UC IRVINE VS NEW MEXICO STATE (Las Vegas Classic, Las Vegas NV).  This is New Mexico State’s first game since their game at New Mexico was cancelled, so the off the court storylines could come in to play.  As far as things go on the court, both teams have just one loss and UC Irvine has racked up some pretty nice wins already.  If the Eaters are going to make a run at the bubble then this is the kind of game they need to be able to routinely win.  It’s not an easy game to win, but that’s just it.  It’s not easy to land inside the bubble either.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Florida Atlantic @ Albany – FAU has some nice wins and just one loss on the season
-SEMO @ Boston U – both teams with just one loss on the season
-Hostra vs UNC Greensboro (Northern Classic) – after getting off to a strong start, Hofstra has now dropped two in a row and needs a win to get back on track
-Cal State Fullerton vs Utah Tech (Grand Forks ND) – CS Fullerton with just one loss this season
-Towson vs South Alabama (Savannah GA) – Towson needs to bounce back after a very surprising loss yesterday
-Clemson vs California (Emerald Coast Classic) – Clemson shouldn’t have too much trouble bouncing back from their loss to Iowa
-Bryant @ Syracuse – it’s a buy game, but Bryant comes in with just one loss and Syracuse hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire this year
-Montana State vs Quinnipiac (Northern Classic) – Quinnipiac looking to stay unbeaten, and they’ve got to face a Montana State team that should make quite a bit of noise in the Big Sky
-Morehead State @ Marshall – Marshall with just one loss on the year
-East Carolina @ Old Dominion – ECU is out to a bit of a surprising 5-1 start, but this is their first true road game
-North Texas vs Long Beach State (Nassau Championship) – North Texas off to a very quiet 4-1 start and takes on a pretty talented Long Beach State team tonight
-Texas State vs Hawaii (North Shore Classic).  Hawaii with just one loss on the season
-Iona vs Santa Clara (Las Vegas Classic) – Iona has just one loss on the year and doing well in this event should help them build their profile

BUY GAMES:

-Houston Christian @ Missouri
-Hampton @ Wake Forest
-Rhodes (nonD1) @ UAB
-Niagara @ Saint John’s
-Central Connecticut @ Rutgers
-UTRGV @ Texas
-SC State @ Western Kentucky
-Mississippi Valley State @ Colorado State
-Presbyterian @ Charlotte
-Columbia @ Providence
-North Dakota State @ New Mexico
-Saint Thomas @ Utah
-Chicago State @ Marquette
-Life Pacific (nonD1) @ UNLV

Under The Radar Game of the Day – Saturday, November 26th

Hofstra (4-2) vs. UNC-Greensboro (3-2) – 2:00 PM ET

We’ve seen quite a few international games early in the college basketball season, and Quebec is now playing host to the nonbracketed Northern Classic. Today’s game sees the Hofstra Pride facing off against the Spartans of UNC-Greensboro. The Spartans opened the Northern Classic with a 77-66 win against Montana State; Keondre Kennedy led the way with 20 points and 6 rebounds.

The season had gotten off to a good start for Hofstra with four straight wins; most noteworthy among that bunch was a 5-point win against Iona. But in their last outing, Hofstra lost to Middle Tennessee State 64-54 in their first game of the Northern Classic. Amare Marshall led the Pride with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
