What Happened in Vegas: All-Access with HoopsHD at the Continental Tire Main Event

A lot of in-season tournaments around Thanksgiving feature a couple of big-time schools and a couple of not-so-big-time schools…but this year’s Continental Tire Main Event is not 1 of them. We have 2 of the past 3 NCAA champs (Baylor & Virginia), the school with the most titles in NCAA history (UCLA), and another school that ranks top-25 all-time in winning percentage (Illinois). HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel accepted the tough assignment of traveling west to Las Vegas to see a quartet of top-25 teams battling it out and prepared the following photo essay from the 1st day of games on Friday at T-Mobile Arena.

GAME #1: Baylor-Virginia
Not much of a pre-game meal to fill up before back-to-back games: chips/peanuts/pretzels/water. You know that this is a premier event because there were more than FORTY scouts who requested credentials for this weekend. My 1st sighting of the weekend: 1998 NCAA championship coach Tubby Smith (looking resplendent in purple!):

This was Virginia’s 1st basketball game since the murder of 3 UVA football players last Sunday so there was a moment of silence to remember the victims:

It is hard to believe that it is 4PM local time on a Friday in November and I am about to witness 2 of the past 3 NCAA champs going at it in Baylor (2021) and Virginia (2019):

The crowd is MUCH louder for the Hoos, and when combined with the Illini fans who showed up early it is basically a sea of orange in the stands. The crowd did not need much pumping up, but for those who do then look no further than…DJ Prenup!?

Let’s tip it off:

The 1st half was nip-and-tuck throughout with neither team building a double-digit lead. The Baylor backcourt of Adam Flagler (left)/LJ Cryer (right) was unstoppable from behind the arc as they combined to make 5 threes:

Virginia guard Armaan Franklin turned 22 on Thursday and decided to milk his birthday by showing out in the 1st half: fadeaway jumpers and steals on defense that were converted into layups on offense allowed his team to hang around as the Cavaliers only trailed 33-30 at halftime.

BYU transfer Caleb Lohner was sensational off the bench in the 2nd half while going 4-4 from the field including a 3 from the top of key, but the best new face for the Bears was 2022 McDonald’s All-American Keyonte George: the super-frosh simply does not make any unspectacular plays. While he certainly needs some work on both his decision-making (5 TO) and defensive positioning (5 fouls in 27 minutes), he does a little bit of everything on offense. He made a couple of runners in the lane, a tough lefty bank shot that resulted in an and-1, and a 3 from the top of key en route to a team-high 20 PTS:

However, this game was decided during the 1st 10 minutes after halftime as UVA went on an incredible 30-5 run against a Baylor team that was 98-8 over the past 6 years when holding a lead entering the 2nd half. Franklin showed that he was not just an inside scorer by making a trio of trifectas and Reece Beekman kept running the offense to perfection, finishing with 10 AST (1 short of his career-high). Big man Kadin Shedrick ended up fouling out but not before scoring 17 PTS/6-6 FG plus a pair of STL/BLK as Virginia hung on to win 86-79:

In the postgame press conference I asked Virginia coach Tony Bennett how well he knew his opposing coach. He said that he has known Scott Drew for many years and cares for his family because they are about character/faith. He spoke to his father Dick earlier today, who mentioned that he could not believe that 40 years ago he was coaching against Homer Drew and today his son Tony was coaching against Scott:

I decided to see what Coach Drew thought about his team’s 35-14 disadvantage at the free throw line. He smiled and stated that he would have to look at the tape because it does not lie! He admitted that his team needed to do a better job of keeping the Cavaliers off of the FT line but was at least happy that his guys made their shots when they did get to the line (12-14):

GAME #2: UCLA-Illinois
The nightcap might also serve as a sneak preview of a future conference game, as the University of California regents announced that they will decide next month whether UCLA can indeed leave the Pac-12 for the Big 10. I though the UVA fans were loud but the Illini fans took it to another (decibel) level. They were screaming out “DEFENSE” and remained standing until the Bruins made their 1st basket (which took over 2 minutes) so it both felt/sounded like a home game in Champaign. In contrast, this UCLA fan was escorted out after the under-8 timeout, to the delight of the surrounding orange-clad fans:

My 2nd A-list sighting of the night was CBS studio analyst Seth Davis, although I guess I am still not 100% sure it is him because I have never seen him not wearing a suit jacket:

Texas Tech transfer/Chicago native Terrence Shannon had a double-double in the 1st half…but you will hear a LOT more from him in the 2nd half! The Bruins have a pair of 1st-team all-Pac-12 preseason picks who both lived up to the hype. PG Tyger Campbell scored from all over the court in the 1st half, making layups and pull-up jumpers and 3-PT shots, oh my:

His teammate Jaime Jaquez Jr. (why does nobody call him Triple-J?!) was also making a ton of shots, including his signature turnaround/fadeaway jumper that seems to go in a majority of the time:

Illinois trailed 37-28 at halftime thanks to a sloppy 13-turnover performance, and when UCLA kept pouring it on to go up 44-29 early in the 2nd half it seemed like it might turn into a blowout, but Coach Brad Underwood called a timeout just 47 seconds after halftime to calm his team down…and it worked. Bruins SG David Singleton made a bunch of threes down the stretch but not as many as Shannon, who tied a school record by making 8-9 3PM (compared to the entire UCLA team who made 9-22 from behind the arc). By the time he was done the Illini had not just tied it up but concluded a 42-17 run to take a double-digit lead of its own:

The other noteworthy performance came from Illinois big man Dain Dainja (“Dainja Zone” anyone?). He made all 6 of his FG attempts and is now a ridiculous 30-35 from the field this season. The best part is that they are not just dunks: he made a gorgeous spin/reverse lefty layup/&1 as well as a turnaround jump hook, and while I do not think he is Kofi Cockburn 2.0 he is pretty freaking unstoppable once he gets the ball in the paint, as he helped his team pull off an amazing 79-70 comeback win:

In the postgame press conference I almost did not pose a question to UCLA coach Mick Cronin because frankly…he scares me, and he was in a pretty bad mood after getting outscored 51-33 in the 2nd half. I regained my courage and meekly whispered what he can do when a guy like Shannon is making a ton of threes: he interrupted me and said that they needed to stop him from shooting. He then proceeded to call out his entire team (and in fairness, he shouldered some of the blame himself), accusing them of not hearing defensive adjustments/scouting reports because they were only focused on their offense. He closed with a quote: “Show me a guy who is not humble and I will show you a guy who is ready to be humbled”:

On a happier note, I tried to see if Coach Underwood had an inkling to place Dainja Zone in the starting lineup. He admitted that he worries just as much about who comes off the bench as who starts and that they are in a really good place with where they are at. However, he did give props to his big man for being big in the 2nd half and that even if he does not start him he should at least consider getting him some more shots:

Since the dream matchup on Sunday of Illinois guard Matthew Mayer facing his old Baylor team (with whom he won an NCAA title in 2021) did not come to fruition, I settled for seeing if he would give his former teammates some tips about what to expect from UCLA this weekend. He said he still keeps in touch with them because “those are my boys” and that whenever he is not playing against them he is rooting for them. Since there was a chance that he might face them on Sunday they had not been talking a lot this week but now they can pick it back up again:

That is a wrap for Day 1, check back in the days ahead for a recap of Sunday’s consolation/championship!
P.S. I got to interview Adam Fleischer of the Illini Guardians NIL Collective back in September and he invited me to come join a game-watch at Aria for the Illinois-Michigan game on Saturday morning at 9AM Vegas time. I was not sure what to expect so early in the day…but as you can see by all of the orange in the photos below, this school travels as well as any program that I have ever seen:

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Saturday, Nov 19th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-WE ARE DECLARING THE SWAC THE WINNERS OF THE PAC-12/SWAC LEGACY SERIES!!!  Southern won at California 74-66 yesterday.  This wasn’t an official Legacy Series game, but since the series ended 3-3, we at Hoops HD have declared this the tiebreaker!!  CONGRATS TO THE SWAC!!!

-Virginia scored 56 points in the second half against Baylor, which is amazing because Virginia isn’t exactly known for its offensive explosions like that, and came from behind to get a really big 86-79 win that will end up looking fantastic on their resume come March.

– Illinois also came from behind against UCLA and put up a bunch of points in the second half to collect a 79-70 win.  Considering how good of a defensive team UCLA typically is it was a really impressive showing.

-Indiana fell behind early in the first half at Xavier, but clawed their way back, pulled pretty close to even by halftime, and then escaped with an 81-79 win on the road.  Xavier had a chance to win it on their last possession, but missed a layup close in and after an IU freethrow they secured the two point win, which is their first notable win of the year.

-Colorado continues their schizophrenic season.  After a somewhat surprising loss to UMass on Thursday, they absolutely blew out Texas A&M yesterday.  This resume is shaping up to be a lot of fun for the committee come March!

-Virginia Tech got a nice 61-59 win against Penn State in the Charleston cCassic, and advances to the finals.  Both of these teams might be a little better than expected.  Penn State nay not have won the game, but they’ve looked  better than what most were expecting, and they’re certainly have more chances at big wins later on.

-On the winners side of the bracket, UMass got another big win over a Murray State team that has so far been better than what many were expecting.  It came down to an (almost) last second shot as UMass held on 71-69.  Angry Frank’s bunch has improved quite a bit since getting blown out at home by Towson.

-Kansas should have had no trouble with Southern Utah, but the Thunderbirds kept it close and it wasn’t until the final minute of the game that Kansas finally got control and held on for an 82-76 win.  Southern Utah was not a team we were expecting much out of this year, but they really did look fantastic tonight, and have perhaps played their way onto the radar for…well…Under the Radar.

-Drake remains unbeaten, but every game has been more of a workout than what we were expecting.  They trailed Buffalo for much of yesterday’s game in the Paradise Jam, but pulled away late for an 80-72 win.

-Colgate followed up their blowout win at Syracuse with an 85-80 road loss at Duquesne.  I’m of the belief that this Duquesne team is better than advertised.  I’m not going to go so far to say I think they’ll make The Tournament, but they certainly haven’t looked like an A10 Doormat either.  There was no stream for this game, for whatever reason, which is unfortunate because it’s not all that often Duquesne plays a game at home that has this kind of intrigue.

-Oklahoma State, who was one of my dark horses prior to the start of the season, has somewhat let me down.  They suffered their second loss of the year yesterday as they fell in overtime to UCF 60-56 down in the Bahamas.  UCF is now a sneaky good 3-1, so perhaps some eyes should be on them.

-Southern Miss remains unbeaten, and picked up their second notable road win of the year as they knocked off Liberty 76-72,  It is NOT easy to win at Liberty, so Southern Miss could make some noise in the Sun Belt this year.

-Florida State remains winless after losing at home to Florida 76-67.  It’s quite possible that neither of these teams are actually any good.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-SAINT LOUIS VS MARYLAND (Basketball Hall of Fame, Uncasville CT).  Both teams come in at 3-0, and SLU is coming off a pretty impressive win against Memphis, so they’ve already been tested a little bit.  This is a good opportunity for a notable out of conference win for both teams.

-PROVIDENCE VS MIAMI FL (Basketball Hall of Fame Tipoff, Uncasville CT).  Both teams come in at 3-0, but Providence had to sweat out some home buy games and will need to do much better today against a Miami FL team that was in the Elite Eight a year ago and returns most of that core.

-NEW MEXICO STATE AT NEW MEXICO (Back Range).  This is a big rivalry, and both teams have shown some promise.  New Mexico State has an overhauled roster, so we are still learning about them, and New Mexico comes in at 3-0 so they’ve got some momentum built up.  More than anything this is just a fun rivalry.

-SEATTLE AT PORTLAND.  This is a sneaky good game between two teams that are perhaps being undervalued.  Seattle comes in at 3-1, and Portland is out to a 4-1 start, so both have shown some life this season.

-UC IRVINE AT PEPPERDINE.  UC Irvine is 3-0 and already has a big win at Oregon.  This would add another road win to their resume and continue their early season momentum.  These are the kinds of things that the committee notices.

-HOFSTRA AT SAINT MARY’S.  This is perhaps the game of the day.  Both teams are unbeaten so far, both have high expectations for the year, and Hofstra already has some decent wins on their resume, including two road wins.  This is by far their toughest challenge of the year so far, though, so it will be interesting to see how they do.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Middle Tennessee @ Missouri State – it’s unlikely we’ll see either inside the bubble, but both have been a little better than expected so far
-Eastern Kentucky vs UNC Asheville (Atlanta GA) – UNCA is 3-0
-Detroit Mercy @ Florida Atlantic – FAU has a nice win against Florida and is looking to get to 4-1
-Stephen F Austin @ South Dakota State – South Dakota State is off to a 2-2 start, but they’ve played a rough schedule and are good enough to start stringing together wins
-Troy @ Montana – a win for Troy gets them to 5-1, which is a somewhat better start than expected

BUY GAMES:

-Robert Morris @ Dayton
-Elon @ NC State
-Chicago State @ Kent State
-Northeastern @ Syracuse – Syracuse needs to rebound from a decisive loss to Colgate
-The Citadel @ Butler
-Nicholls @ BYU
-Portland State @ Oregon State

Under The Radar Game of the Day – Saturday, November 19th

For Jon Teitel’s interview with former South Dakota head coach Dave Boots – CLICK HERE

Kennesaw State (3-1) at Appalachian State (3-1) – 7:00 PM (ESPN+)

Today’s Under the Radar Game of the Day takes us to one of our favorite stops in Boone, North Carolina, home of the Appalachian State Mountaineers. This is actually the second game of three for both teams in a multi-team event that is being hosted by Appalachian State. Kennesaw State got their first win against a D1 foe against Southeastern Louisiana yesterday – 72-68 was the margin of victory. The Owls were 10-for-19 behind the arc.

App State opened up their MTE with a surprising 63-58 loss to Campbell despite 21 points from Donovan Gregory. It was surprising in the sense that the Mountaineers were coming off of a 1-point win at Louisville earlier in the week; App State never trailed in that contest.

Happy Birthday! HoopsHD interviews former South Dakota coach Dave Boots

For today’s News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – CLICK HERE

It takes a special kind of coach to win 500 games at 1 school…and Dave Boots was made for coaching. He was hired at South Dakota in 1988 and retired a quarter-century later with a record of 503-235. The winningest coach in Coyote history, he had 23 winning seasons in a row from 1989-2011, made 10 D-2 tourneys, and even won the 2010 Great West Conference tourney. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Coach Boots about being a great FT shooter and winning so many games. Today is Dave’s 67th birthday so let us be the 1st to wish him a happy 1!

In 1979 you graduated from Augsburg after serving as team captain/team MVP: how good a player were you back in the day, and how far did you think you could go as a player? I was a decent player who was on a better team. Basketball is and always will be a team sport 1st in my book so I have to attribute a lot of my success to my teammates. I would have loved to further my playing career but I knew that coaching was my ultimate calling.

You set the Augsburg career record with 88.1 FT% and the MIAC single-season record with 97.1 FT%: what is your secret for FT shooting, and do you remember every single FT you missed during that amazing season? I never really had a secret for shooting FT: it is all about concentration for me. I was able to block out distractions and focus on the task at hand. Of course, a lot of practice helps too! I do remember a few misses from that season but I would say that they made me better in the long run because I worked that much harder to not miss the next time.

Why did you decide to become a coach, and how did you end up at South Dakota? Coaching is something that I have been compelled to do. I was lucky enough to catch on with my alma mater right after graduation and eventually became the head coach there. It was a great experience to work so hard for the college you love and we also had some good success there. The USD job came open and it was a position that I felt fit me well. My goals/priorities matched with those of the athletic department at the time and they continued to match over the length of my extended stay there.

2-time All-American Tommie King said that he enjoyed working with you because of your laid-back personality and that you really know how to help players develop/show their talents: how are you able to be so effective without yelling at your players, and what do you think are the most important character traits in being a good coach? Tommie is 1 of the greatest players in USD history so it was not that hard for my coaching staff to develop him! Every coach gets frustrated with their athletes at times but yelling has never really been a part of my approach. Part of being a good coach is having the patience/temperament to work with your players and teach them how you want them to play, even when they are struggling. Another important trait in coaching has to be determination: you have to have thick skin in this business because everyone has critics.

You did not have a single losing season at USD from 1989-2011: how were you able to remain so consistent for such a long time, and how did you reload every single year after losing guys to graduation? I think the key to consistency is getting your student-athletes to buy into the system. We have had some stars here but we always had players ready to step in because they realize that the Coyotes are a team first and that USD basketball is a family.

You also worked as assistant AD: how did the AD gig compare to the coaching gig? Coaching was always something that I wanted to do but serving as an AD was something that I had to be recruited into. It has given me a great appreciation for all of the people that work hard behind the scenes in athletics. From SIDs to custodians, all of the members of an athletic department have to pull together toward the same goal and being an AD helped me understand that.

You coached All-American Turner Trofholz, who became the 1st player in NCC history to be named NABC national POY: was he the best player you ever coached, and could you tell at the time you recruited him that he was capable of becoming national POY? Turner is definitely in the discussion for the best player I coached at USD. He was a very talented young man and even more importantly he was a hard worker. When we were recruiting him out of a small town in Nebraska we knew that he had the potential to be good…but he obviously surpassed our expectations. Turner was a kid who worked hard for everything that he got.

You won more than 600 games during your career: do you consider yourself to be 1 of the best coaches in D-2 history? There have been some great coaches over the years at the D-2 level so it is hard for me to put myself in their category. Honestly, we do not spend a lot of time thinking about D-2 anymore. After we became D-1 we liked to focus on the future and excelling at that level.

Your athletic program eventually made the move from Independent to the Great West to the Summit League: what was the biggest adjustment? Our 1st year in the Great West was a great success for both our team and our athletic department. Going 11-1 in the conference and winning the regular season/tournament titles was a special achievement for the Coyotes. The added bonus of playing Creighton in the 2010 CIT was an event that really energized our fan base and was a great reward for our team’s hard work during that season. We were excited to play in the GWC but have been looking forward to joining the Summit League and playing South Dakota State again.

When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most? It is an honor just to think that people will remember my time here at USD. I have had many great years with the Coyotes, but I hope that people remember me for turning young men into adults and how my staff and I helped develop some of tomorrow’s leaders.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Friday, Nov 18th

NEWS AND NOTES:

For John Stalica’s UTR Games of the Day (from abroad!) – CLICK HERE

-Murray State didn’t look all that impressive in their season opener against Saint Louis, but they haven’t lost since then and yesterday they knocked off Texas A&M 88-79 for a HUGE OOC win.  They were good last year, but are virtually an entirely different team this year.  Nevertheless, they showed yesterday they can play with (and beat) top 25 teams.

-Penn State jumped way ahead of Furman and had a 20+ pt lead, but Furman chipped away at it, played good defense, rebounded well, and had it down to 3 with a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but had two shots rattle out.  Penn State held on 73-68.  This is a win that could have REALLY helped boost Furman’s resume.  It wouldn’t have just been the singular win against Penn State, but the chance to land on the winner’s side of the bracket and have yet more opportunities at quality wins.  For UTR teams, these early season games can be HUGELY important and pivotal even though it is just the second win of the season.

-After a rough loss at home to Towson, UMass bounced back and beat Colorado 66-63 down in Myrtle Beach.  Colorado is perhaps one of the nation’s most schizophrenic teams so far.  Losses to UMass and Grambling, and a win over Tennessee.  Boy are we going to have fun evaluating that come March!

-South Carolina isn’t all that good, but Colorado State just absolutely blew their doors off 85-53 and showed all the signs of being a top 40ish caliber team.

-Keep an eye on Towson.  They played with their food for most of the game against UNC Greensboro yesterday, but finally woke up, came back, and got the 56-53 win on the road to improve to 4-0.

-Charleston wasn’t a UTR team that we were all that big on coming into the year, but they really played well in a loss at North Carolina, and yesterday they totally blew Davidson (who came in unbeaten) to the moon  89-66.  They move on in the Charleston Classic, and have more chances to pick up early notable wins.

-Hofstra remains unbeaten after picking up their second road win by knocking off San Jose State 85-76 in a game they had to come from behind to win.  None of their wins are exactly quad 1 wins, but none are exactly home buy games either.

-And finally, what Arizona State did to Michigan in the championship game of the Legends Classic may not even be legal in some states.  It was a complete and total 87-62 beat down.  Michigan State has had to sweat out a rather poor Eastern Michigan team, and then got blown to pieces by an Arizona State team that, prior to this game, hadn’t looked that good at all (and had even lost at Texas Southern).  So, the Wolverines will likely be exiting the top 25 and they’ll have some work to do.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-COLORADO VS TEXAS A&M (Myrtle Beach Invitational, Conway SC).  This is probably the match-up many of us were expecting to see, but not in the round we thought we’d see it in.  TAMU fell to Murray State for their first loss of the year, and Colorado followed up their big win against Tennessee (which followed up their big loss to Grambling) with a somewhat surprising loss to UMass.  One thing that absolutely does not matter is the side of the bracket that it’s on.  It’s a neutral floor game, and it counts the same as if they had both won yesterday.

-UMASS VS MURRAY STATE (Myrtle Beach Invitational, Conway SC).  Both teams pulled off wins that were somewhat surprising to get here, especially after they had dropped some games early.  As we always say, these early season MTEs are great opportunities for teams to pick up notable wins and to build their NCAA Tournament resumes.

-PENN STATE VS VIRGINIA TECH (Charleston Classic, Charleston SC).   Both teams survived late charges from their opponents yesterday as Penn State held off Furman, and Virginia Tech held off Old Dominion.  Neither team has lost this season, both have some momentum built up, and this is a chance for them to add a notable OOC win to their resume.

-FURMAN VS OLD DOMINION (Charleston Classic, Charleston SC).  Furman fell behind by more than 20 against Penn State, but really got on the glass and clawed their way back into it yesterday, and had two good looks to force overtime, but just couldn’t get it done.  Old Dominion isn’t the high caliber opponent that they were hoping to face in order to build their resume, but it is a chance to at least pick up a neutral floor win.

-TEMPLE VS RUTGERS (Hall of Fame Showcase, Uncasville CT).  Rutgers is unbeaten, but largely untested, but that should change today.  I think.  Maybe.  Temple has been a very schizophrenic team early on with a loss to Wagner, a win against Villanova, and a loss to Vanderbilt.  Who knows which version of them will show up for this one.

-INDIANA AT XAVIER (Gavitt Tipoff Games).  This is the first real test of the season for either team.  Xavier hasn’t exactly blown away some of the teams they’ve played in home buy games, so even though they’re at home this is definitely a game that Indiana is capable of winning.

-COLGATE AT DUQUESNE.  Colgate is coming off a decisive win at Syracuse, and is suddenly looking like a very dangerous team.  Duquesne is a modest 2-1 with the only loss being at Kentucky, so they appear to be better than expected.  I’m intrigued by this one.

-VIRGINIA VS BAYLOR (Main Event, Las Vegas NV).  This is Virginia’s first game since the tragic shooting deaths of three members of the football team, and it’s a tall order against a Baylor team that’s ranked in the top five.  Both teams are in the rankings, both are playing for protected seeds, and this is a chance for one of them to pick up a really big early season win.

-UCF AT OKLAHOMA STATE.  I still think Oklahoma State is a dark horse, and they face a UCF team that could make some noise in the American this year.

-SOUTHERN MISS AT LIBERTY.  Southern Miss is 3-0 with a win at Vanderbilt (although the other two wins were against nonD1 teams).  So, they sort of have our attention.  They’ll have much more of our attention if they can win on the road against a good Liberty team that’s looking to bounce back after a decisive loss to Alabama.

-FLORIDA AT FLORIDA STATE.  Florida State is still looking for their first win.  In fact, it’s even worse than that.  All their losses have been home buy games.  Florida hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, but they’ve at least taken care of business in their home buy games.  This is a rivalry game, so maybe this will finally snap FSU out of whatever funk they’ve been in.  I’m not holding my breath, though.

-VILLANOVA AT MICHIGAN STATE.  Villanova has lost to Temple, and really didn’t look good at all in their last game against a Delaware State team that’s just all kinds of awful.  Michigan State, on the other hand, has simply looked amazing so far this season.  With them being at home this one could get ugly for Nova.

-GRAMBLING AT GRAND CANYON.  Yes!  We are highlighting this!!  It has a storyline that we never would have imagined at the start of the season! Grambling is unbeaten with a win against Colorado.  Grand Canyon is a VERY tough place to play, though, so while it’s been a good run for Grambling so far it’s going to take a huge effort to keep it going.

-ILLINOIS VS UCLA (Main Event, Las Vegas NV).  Both are top 20 teams, and this is a showcase game to add what will probably be a high quality win to their resume.  Teams get protected seeds by playing in and winning games like this one.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Rider vs Stetson (MAAC/ASun Dublin Challenge, Dublin Ireland) – Stetson has two road wins, and while this is a neutral floor game, it is certainly a long way from home.
-Buffalo vs Drake (Paradise Jam, Saint Thomas Virgin Islands) – Drake needs to do well in this event in order to build up their resume
-La Salle vs Wake Forest (Jamaica Classic) – Neither team is expected to do much, but both come in with respectable records and both have a chance to build on that if they can do well in this event
-Howard vs Wyoming (Paradise Jam).  Wyoming is coming off a surprising loss and needs to do well in this event
-Georgetown vs LMU (Jamaica Classic)
-Campbell @ Appalachian State – App State is 3-0
-Vermont @ Iona – two really good UTR teams that are among the favorites to win their leagues
-Boston College vs George Mason (Paradise Jam)
-DePaul vs Santa Clara (Bahamas Championship) – DePaul is unbeaten, but should get a bit of a test tonight
-High Point @ UNLV – both teams unbeaten and UNLV has a really nice win against Dayton (albeit at home)

BUY GAMES:

-Delaware @ Duke
-Penn @ West Virginia
-Lipscomb @ Notre Dame
-Bellarmine @ Clemson
-UT Martin @ Ole Miss
-Southern Utah @ Kansas
-Texas Southern @ Auburn
-Purdue Fort Wayne @ Northwestern
-South Alabama @ Oklahoma
-UNC Wilmington @ Connecticut
-Jacksonville State @ Alabama
-Mount Saint Mary’s @ USC

Under The Radar Doubleheader of the Day – Friday, November 18th

MAAC/A-Sun Challenge in Dublin, Ireland (2 Games)

Rider (1-1) vs. Stetson (2-0) – 5:00 AM ET (ESPNU)

No, you are reading this right – the Under The Radar Doubleheader of the Day goes across the pond to Dublin, Ireland in a day-night doubleheader featuring four different teams. Stetson has been a road warrior so far this season with wins at Florida State and South Florida, and now they will look to be the ultimate road warriors with a win on two different continents before playing their first home games of the season! Rider comes in off of a close loss at Providence despite leading the defending Big East champion Friars by 14 in the first half.

Central Arkansas (2-1) vs. Niagara (0-2) – 11:00 AM ET (ESPN3)

The second game of this doubleheader will be online-only with other exempt bracketed events being televised on the ESPN networks; Niagara comes into this game coming off of a pair of blowout losses against both rebuilding Bucknell and Maryland teams. Central Arkansas started the season with a win against in-state rival Little Rock, but they are now coming off of a loss at Wichita State by 20+ points.

Since there is a very good chance the first game may already be done by the time you read this, keep in mind there is a 6 AM starting time for Saturday’s game between Central Arkansas and Rider. Niagara and Stetson will follow with a noontime game on Saturday as well.
