Under The Radar Game of the Day – Wednesday, November 16th

Oakland (1-2) at Toledo (2-0) – 7:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day features the Toledo Rockets hosting the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in a battle between two teams separated by approximately 70 miles of I-75. Toledo is coming off of a 93-85 win against Conference USA favorite UAB. The Rockets trailed by 7 points at halftime, but a 15-3 run to start the 2nd half put Toledo up for good. Three players had at least 20 points with RayJ Dennis leading the way with 23 points.

Oakland started off the season with a non-D1 win, but their previous two games have been tougher sledding. Oklahoma State made a rare visit to the Blacktop/O-rena, but they were rude guests en route to a 91-62 victory. Bowling Green also beat Oakland by 5 points in their previous outing at home; this will be the first road test for Oakland (albeit a short trip).

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Tuesday, Nov 15th

NEWS AND NOTES:

For the latest HOOPS HD REPORT – CLICK HERE

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Virginia’s game against Northern Iowa was cancelled yesterday following the senseless shooting deaths of three members of the football team that occurred on a class bus trip back from Washington DC.  I never know what I’m supposed to say on a website like this when something like that happens.  Our good friend Joby Fortson (who runs our JNG Rankings) is a UVA alum and understandably feels a strong connection with that program.  Our thoughts, prayers, and sympathies are with the families, the students, the friends, the teammates, and everyone who has been impacted by this senseless tragedy.

I know that everything else seems unimportant by comparison, but…

-TCU had struggled in their first two games, but still got the wins and I think we were all waiting for them to just kind of snap out of it.  Well, they didn’t, and last night they lost at home to Northwestern State 64-63.  It’s a surprisingly sluggish start for a team that went to a Sweet Sixteen a year ago and returned basically everybody.  Teams are often sluggish in November, but typically not teams like TCU who returned all their top players from a team that was really good the year before.  I do think they’ll get it going, but they’ve got A LOT of work to do.

-Maine knocked off Boston College 69-64 and handed BC their first loss of the season.  BC isn’t expected to do much, but Maine was picked to pretty much be at the bottom of the America East and has a recent history of struggling to get past the opening round of the America East Tournament, so for them to get a win like this is big for their program!

-Villanova really had to sweat it out against Delaware State, who is one of the worst teams in all of D1, but held on for a 60-50 win after trailing for much of the game.

-Stetson is now 2-0 on the year after knocking off South Florida 68-67.  Two games, both on the road, both against teams from multi-bid leagues, and both wins.  Not a bad start for the Hatters!!

-Hofstra is now 3-0 after beating George Washington 85-80.  None of their wins have been spectacular, but they’ve all at least been decent.  This follows a win against a pretty good Iona team, so we need to start keeping our eyes on the Pride.

-Florida Atlantic went in to Florida and got the 76-74 win.  I think Florida will improve as the year goes on, but I also think FAU will make more noise than expected in Conference USA.

-Troy knocked off Florida State 79-72.  Florida State, Louisville, and Boston College are ACC teams that have looked absolutely pathetic this year.  All with losses in home buy games, and Louisville and FSU are still looking for their first wins.

-Last but not least…how about the Southland this year!!!  SELA gets a win at Wyoming, Northwestern State has knocked off TCU, and TAMU Commerce, who is a transtional team, had an exciting overtime win at Air Force last night.  That’s three road wins against non-UTR teams!!  Not bad at all!!

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-NORTHWESTERN AT GEORGETOWN (Gavitt Tipoff Games).  Both teams come in having won their first two games, but this is the first real test for both of them.  Coppin State did take Georgetown to overtime, but that was more of a quiz they almost failed than an actual test.

-KENTUCKY VS MICHIGAN STATE (Champions Classic, Indianapolis IN).  Michigan State showed me a lot against Gonzaga.  They didn’t win the game, but they sure as hell had a chance to, and they are an outstanding defensive team.  Kentucky has looked good, but hasn’t played anybody that’s looked all that good yet.  That will change tonight.

-RICE AT MIDDLE TENNESSEE (Conference USA).  It’s odd to see a conference game this early, I believe this counts in the standings.  Middle Tennessee is a potential dark horse in this league this year.

-VANDERBILT AT TEMPLE.  Temple is coming off a big win agains Villanova and looking to build on that momentum.  They lost their opener to Wagner, but are still good enough to end up having a really big year.  Vandy is still looking for their first win.

-COLGATE AT SYRACUSE.  I know this seems like a strange game to highlight, but I really like this Colgate team, and feel that Syracuse is struggling this year.  I’m not going to go so far as to predict an upset, but I’m not ruling it out as a possibility either, and if Colgate does win it then their early season resume will certainly go up in value.

-MARQUETTE AT PURDUE (Gavitt Tipoff Games).  Like most Gavitt match-ups, both tams are unbeaten, but both are also untested.  We were big on this Purdue team coming into the year, and they should have the advantage at home.  We weren’t expecting much out of Marquette, but a win tonight would change our perception of them.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT STANFORD.  It’s never easy to win on the road, but if San Diego State is good enough to earn a protected seed, then this is the kind of road game they should be able to routinely win.

-MONTANA STATE AT OREGON.  Montana State is the Big Sky favorite and has looked pretty good in their first two games this year (despite losing one of them).  Oregon started off in the Top 25, but was blown out of the gym by UC Irvine last week and looking to rebound.  The alarms will really be going off if they lose a second straight game at home to an (albeit good) Under the Radar team.

-MEMPHIS AT SAINT LOUIS.  Both these teams are good.  Both feel they are good enough to make the NCAA Tournament.  Both need good wins in order to get there.  This is a chance for a good win.  Memphis is very talented, but can they play together on the road?  This is perhaps the game I’m most excited for tonight.

-DUKE VS KANSAS (Legends Classic, Indianapolis IN).  This is a showcase game between two teams that were in the Final Four last year.  Both are likely to end up as protected seeds again this year, and this is simply a big early season resume building opportunity.  More of a litmus test than a must win.  It will help the winner, but not really set back the loser.

-DAYTON AT UNLV.  Dayton clearly looks to be the better team, but it’s still a bit of a challenging road game for the Flyers.  They’re in the top 25.  Many feel they can get a protected seed.  This is the kind of games that a team of that caliber is expected to win.  It’s not easy to win, but it’s not easy to get a protected seed and stay in the top 25 either.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Appalachian State @ Louisville – App State is unbeaten and looking for their first road win
-Buffalo @ Connecticut – it’s a buy game, but Buffalo at least has a little bit of a pulse
-Washington State @ Prairie View A&M (Pac-12/SWAC Legacy) – The SWAC has surprisingly held their own in this event, and PVAM is looking to remain unbeaten
-Bowling Green @ Wright State – Bowling Green is 2-0
-Bucknell @ Saint Peter’s – Bucknell is 2-0
-James Madison @ Howard – JMU is 3-0 and is looking for their second road win
-New Hampshire @ Fordham – New Hampshire is 2-0
-Penn @ Drexel (Sort of Big 5) – Drexel is 1-0
-Binghamton @ Maryland – buy game, but both are unbeaten
-Chattanooga @ Ole Miss – Ole Miss looking to remain unbeaten
-Saint Bonaventure @ South Dakota State – I really like this South Dakota State team and if they can hold serve in games like this they can rack up a big record and land near the bubble
-New Mexico @ SMU – New Mexico is 2-0, but this is their first road game
-Alabama @ South Alabama – South Alabama is jacked for this one, but it should still be a very winnable road game for the Tide
-LMU @ UC Irvine – UCI is looking to remain unbeaten after their big win at Oregon
-Vermont @ USC – USC needs to bounce back after losing to FGCU

BUY GAMES:

-Stonehill @ Providence

Under The Radar Game of the Day – Tuesday, November 15th

For last night’s Hoops HD Report – CLICK HERE

Alcorn State (1-1) at Stephen F. Austin (2-0) – 7:30 PM (ESPN+)

With a rare road win at the Roundhouse against Wichita State on Saturday, Alcorn State vaults themselves into the UTR Game of the Day with a visit to perennial UTR power Stephen F. Austin. Despite trailing 31-28 at halftime, the Braves outscored Wichita 38-26 in the second half. Trevin Wade led the way with 14 points and Dominic Brewton added 13 points.

For years, SFA was at or near the top of the Southland Conference – but this is now their 2nd season in the WAC. The Lumberjacks are coming off of an 86-71 home win against Gardner-Webb where Nana Antwi-Boasaiko had 21 points and 7 rebounds. Roti Ware also had 16 points for SFA in their last victory.

Chad is joined by David, John, and Rocco, and they recap a very busy first week of the regular season.  The Gavitt Games between the Big East and Big Ten are underway, and we discuss each of those match-ups, Gonzaga had to sweat out a win against Michigan State in a game that was played on a boat, and Wisconsin beat Stanford in a game that was played in a baseball stadium.  We’ve also seen some huge upsets with Grambling beating Colorado, Colorado then beating Tennessee, SELA shocking Wyoming on the road, Florida State off to a very rough start, Oregon going down in their season opener, and much more.

Merit Rankings (and Bracket Projections) From the Puppet – Nov 14th

For today’s News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – CLICK HERE

Before we go any further, I want to make sure everyone knows what they’re looking at.  This IS NOT an attempt to guess what the Selection Committee will do on Selection Sunday.  This IS ALSO NOT an attempt for me to rank the teams based on how good they actually are.  If that’s what you’re looking for then CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THE LATEST JNG RANKINGS.  These rankings are simply based on CURRENT MERIT.

UC Irvine is ranked #1.  They won at Oregon.  That is the single best win that anyone has up to this point.  That’s why they’re ranked #1.  It’s not because I believe them to be the best team.

North Carolina is ranked 67th (and not even in the bracket below).  I do not believe that there are 66 teams that are better than they are.  It’s just that when you assess their CURRENT MERIT all they’ve done is win two home buy games.  That’s not hard to do.  If all a team has done is win home buy games, they’ve essentially done nothing.  Any type of road win, even if it came against an Under the Radar team, is worth more merit than winning a home buy game.

So, what’s the point of this??  It gets me in the habit of objectively evaluating the teams.  That’s the biggest thing.  The other point I like to make is that 15 seconds into the game, the scoreboard still shows both the score and the time.  No one says “What’s the point of showing that Mississippi Valley State is beating Baylor 2-0??  It’s not like they’re going to win!!  Why don’t they just wait until ten minutes in to post the score and the time??  This is sort of how I view the Merit Rankings after the first week.  We’re one minute into the game, and this is the score.  Metaphorically speaking the team that’s currently leading very early in the game may end up losing by 50, but as for now, they are ahead.

Just for fun, I placed these teams into a bracket and seeded it below.

  1. UC IRVINE – 1-0, win @ Oregon

NOTES ON THE BRACKET:

-I get that this is the most drunk looking bracket you’ll ever see, but I still can’t help to think it’s fun to look at.  Chances are, on Selection Sunday, you will see absolutely NONE of the following:

-UTR teams on the #1 line
-UTR teams as protected seeds at all
-Three First Four games on the #16 line
-The Big Ten Champion in the First Four…on the #16 line

FACT CHECK:

Temple won at home against Villanova, not on the road. #SillyPuppet

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Monday, Nov 14th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-So Colorado had quite a weekend.  They lost to Grambling on Friday, and then beat Tennessee, who from all accounts is a consensus top 15 team, on Sunday down in Nashville.  They were in control for pretty much the entire second half before picking up the 78-66 win.  Must be November!

-Davidson is now 3-0, but it wasn’t easy.  They had to sweat out VMI in a home buy game but won 75-71

-We saw two shocking upsets yesterday with Arizona State losing at Texas Southern in overtime 67-66 in the Pac-12/SWAC Legacy.  The SWAC has held their own in that series when they’ve been at home, and an even bigger surprise (at least to me) was SELA winning at Wyoming 76-72.  I really like this Wyoming team, and I think they will solidly be inside the bubble come Selection Sunday, but this loss will likely stand out on their resume, and not in a good way.

-Also a bit of a surprise, after winning at Oklahoma State, Southern Illinois went on the road to Southern Indiana, who is a transitional team, and was blown out of the place 71-53.  It was Southern Indiana’s first ever win as a D1 program.

-Notre Dame is still undefeated, but they continue to struggle in home buy games.  They held off Youngstown State 88-81.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-IUPUI AT CHICAGO STATE (***Centenary Award Watch***).  Also the UTR Game of the Day.  The loser of this game will be an early frontrunner to win the Centenary Award!!  Both of these teams will struggle to finish in the top 360 of the NET, so today’s stakes could not be higher!!  Or…lower.   These are two teams that look to be so indescribably bad that you actually wonder how both of them would perform in their respective state high school basketball tournaments.

-DEPAUL AT MINNESOTA (Gavitt Games).  Neither team is expected to be inside the bubble come March, but as of now both teams are unbeaten.  Both teams are also untested, so perhaps today they can test each other.

-STETSON AT SOUTH FLORIDA.  If Stetson can win this, they’ll be 2-0 with both wins coming on the road.  They looked rather impressive against Florida State in their opener last week so we are definitely keeping an eye on this one.

-RICHMOND AT CHARLESTON.  Richmond won their first two games, and Charleston was right in there with North Carolina this past Friday until the final few minutes of that game.  This would be a really nice road win for the Spiders if they’re able to pull it off.

-GEORGE WASHINGTON AT HOFSTRA.  Both teams are unbeaten, and Hofstra is coming off a pretty good win against Iona, and this is a chance for them to keep that momentum going.

-BELMONT AT LIPSCOMB.  The Battle of the Boulevard!!!!   One of the greatest Under the Radar rivalries in college basketball.  Belmont looks to be rebuilding, and neither team appears to be anywhere near the bubble, but it’s still a fun rivalry that we will always highlight!

-BUTLER AT PENN STATE (Gavitt Tipoff Games).  Another Gavitt Games matchup between two unbeaten, but untested teams.  Penn State MIGHT be a bit of a Big Ten dark horse this year, so I’m curious to see what they do tonight.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Portland @ Kent State – neither team has lost yet, and Kent State appears to be a top level UTR team
-Navy @ Coppin State – Navy is 2-0 on the season and can pick up their second road win tonight
-Louisiana Tech @ Texas Tech – Texas Tech may get some sort of a test tonight, but they still clearly look to be the superior team
-Northern Colorado @ Baylor – Northern Colorado should make some noise in the Big Sky, but they are way overmatched tonight
-Northern Iowa @ Virginia – I like this Northern Iowa team, but they aren’t likely to give Virginia much of a test
-Oral Roberts at Houston – Oral Roberts will be one of the better teams in the Summit League, but they will likely get absolutely creamed tonight by a Houston team that is perhaps the best in the country

BUY GAMES:

-Maine @ Boston College – BC is 2-0
-Delaware State @ Villanova
-South Dakota State @ Duquesne
-Florida Atlantic @ Florida
-NC Central @ Liberty
-Troy @ Florida State – Florida State still looking for their first win
-UMES @ Charlotte
-Northwestern State @ TCU
-Loyola LA (nonD1) @ Southern Miss – Southern Miss is unbeaten and coming off a win at Vanderbilt
-Idaho State @ Utah
-Monmouth @ Illinois
-Wofford @ Drake – Drake is unbeaten
-Holy Cross @ Creighton
-Weber State @ Colorado State
-Norfolk State @ UCLA
-Utah Tech @ Washington
