Chad is joined by a full panel (including John Stalica, who’s such a Big East homer that his signature reps the Big East during an ACC preview show).  Last year it looked as though the ACC was down, but once the NCAA Tournament started everyone who was in it really stepped up. North Carolina is the preseason #1 ranked team in the nation, and understandably so after making it all the way to the Championship Game a year ago and returning four of their starters.  Duke is also loaded with talent despite Mike Krzyzewski retiring and is ranked in the top five.  Other teams that we are really big on are Miami FL, Virginia, and Notre Dame.  We look at all 15 teams, discuss who we think will make it to the Big Dance, and more…

Happy Anniversary! HoopsHD interviews San Diego legend Stan Washington

Robert Parish retired 25 years ago but still holds the NBA record for most games played with 1611. On the other end of the spectrum is Stan Washington, who played college basketball at San Diego and graduated as the leading scorer in school history with 1472 career PTS (a record that stood for more than 3 decades). He was drafted by Washington in 1974 and ended up playing 1 game before retiring as the only Torero to have ever played in the NBA. In 2010 he was inducted into the USD Athletics Hall of Fame. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Stan about being a great scorer and playing for his hometown team in DC. Today marks the 48th anniversary of that game on October 19, 1974, so we take this time to remember his 1 shining moment.

You were born/raised in Washington, DC: what made you choose San Diego? Most of the guys I knew stayed near DC for college but I wanted to try something else. I got to see another part of the country out west.

You were a 6’4” guard: how much of an advantage was your size on the court? It was a great advantage: not only could I handle the point but I was a scoring guard as well. Now you see guards who are 6’7” or 6’8” but back then 6’4” was tall for a PG.

You graduated in 1974 as the all-time leading scorer in school history, a record that stood for more than 30 years: what is the secret to being a great scorer? I have to give credit to my teammates for getting me the ball. Coach Bernie Bickerstaff had a great system that meshed all of us into a great team. I had the green light to distribute/score when needed. Defense is nice…but you have to put the ball in the hole!

In the summer of 1974 you were drafted 66th overall by Washington: did you see that as a validation of your college career, or the realization of a lifelong dream of reaching the NBA, or other? I think that it was a combination of the 2 things. I thought that I would get drafted by Portland because 1 of their scouts was at the gym watching me work out. Most hometown guys who come back home do not fare too well but I was happy to come home and work for a spot.

You played 1 game for Washington on October 19, 1974: what are your memories of your 1 shining moment with your hometown team? Your guess is as good as mine! I was surrounded by a group of talented guys: KC Jones was our head coach and Bernie was on his staff. You have to be at the right place at the right time…and I had 11 teammates with no-cut contracts.

After retiring you spent the next few decades working for housing authorities on the East Coast: how did you get into that business, and how did you like it? Right after I got released I tried out for another team but it did not seem feasible. I also tried out for the ABA team in St. Louis but it would have been difficult for them to bring in a rookie. I worked out with the Virginia Squires but after they folded I knew that I needed something else to do. I started in insurance but became a social service supporter to different communities.

You have spent the past several years living in Puerto Rico: how do you like it down there, and how difficult has it been to deal with all of their natural disasters? I call Puerto Rico my home base. My grandsons were looking for a baseball camp and found 1 down here. It just seemed like a good fit for me: I always liked vacationing near water and used my “Spanglish” to fall in with the right people near the water. When I am not here my family/friends still have a place to come hang out and see how another culture is living.

You were inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2010 and later recognized as part of the Toreros Legends program: what did it mean to you to receive such outstanding honors? That was awesome! I just received a gift from the university the other day listing all of my accomplishments on the varsity. Just to look at it and remember the guys who I played with is fabulous. I try to visit San Diego a couple of times/year to see some of my teammates who still live there. There were a lot of good-hearted people who cared about student-athletes and assisted us with networking. Coming from DC I only had African-American friends so when school opened it was a great shock…but it was the best thing that ever happened to me. It also helped me learn how to communicate with just about anybody.

I heard that you often attend the WCC basketball tourney in Las Vegas: how has the conference changed from your era to the present? It has had major changes. San Diego went from D-2 to D-1 and all of its facilities/campuses are magnificent. We have a number of guys who have coached in the NBA and Bernie is the grandfather of all of it. To see Gonzaga become a major program with TV revenue and high rankings is amazing: it is so competitive now.

When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most? That I was a good guy. I want to leave a legacy of goodwill: anything is possible, care about 1 another, and share the love. After all of the accolades are awarded, it is important to have a sense of pride/respect that has nothing to do with basketball. It took me a number of years to grow into that and become a decent person with character/responsibility, but those ideals became embedded in me at the university.

COMMENTS FROM DAVID:

-DUKE VS NORTH CAROLINA.  It is one of the greatest rivalries in college sports!  For years people loved to point out how the two schools were eight miles apart yet had never met in the NCAA Tournament.  I personally see no reason to stop doing this!  So what if it is not TECHNICALLY true!!??

-Up until about March 5th of last season North Carolina pretty much looked, at best, like a bubble team.  Then they won at Duke and gave their Tournament Resume a huge boost, and after getting an 8-seed in the NCAA Tournament advanced all the way to the Championship Game and nearly won it.  Four starters are back from that team.  They are the preseason favorites to win the ACC, and the preseason #1-ranked team in the AP Poll.  I think they are deserving of all that given how well they were playing down the stretch last year.

-It is going to seem strange not seeing Mike Krzyzewski coaching at Duke, but other than that they look pretty much the same.  They have a ridiculously-talented recruiting class that appears to be stacked with NBA-caliber players, and new Coach Jon Scheyer has been with the staff for a long time so the transition may end up being kind of smooth…at least at first.

-Virginia failed to make the NCAA Tournament last season but I think they will be back in the top-25 this year.  All five starters are back and they play a system that improves with experience.  I could see them actually finishing as high as first in the ACC this year.  I know they did not look like world-beaters last year, and considering it is pretty much the same team this year it is kind of crazy to think they will be world-beaters this year, but I do think they are going to be really damn good!

-I like this Miami FL team and think they should be in the top-25.  Now, few things are more meaningless in all of sports than the preseason AP Poll, but the fact that the Canes are not in it after a run to the Elite Eight, the return of some really good players, and the addition of still more good players, just goes to show you that their basketball brand (despite all that) just does not seem to be valued.  I think this team is so good that it would not shock me to see them end up as a protected seed come March.

-Florida State, like they seem to every year, has a lot of size, a lot of length, and a really strong front court.  This is a formula that usually works for them, and more often than not we have seen them in the top-25 throughout the year.  Last year was not one of those years, though.  They missed the NCAA Tournament and NIT altogether.  Still, expectations are once again high and many expect them to be dancing again this March.

-I am a big fan of this Notre Dame team.  They (barely) made the NCAA Tournament a year ago, but managed to get to the Round of 32 and they have some really good pieces coming back.  They also have a lot of graduate players, and that maturity could help them in the locker room.  They seem to have a lot in their toolbox, and we could see them play a lot of different styles this year, which can be tough on opponents who are trying to prepare for them.

-Virginia Tech went through a stretch early-on in conference play where they lost six out of eight and appeared to drop off of everyone’s radar, but they thundered down the stretch and entered the NCAA Tournament with quite a bit of momentum.  They did lose three starters from last year, but they also return a lot of pieces and appear to have quite a bit of depth.  It would not shock me at all to see them back in the NCAA Tournament this year.

After that it’s a bit of a drop off

-Syracuse failed to even make the NIT last year and they appear to be on a downward slide.  Coach Jim Boeheim has had one of the best careers in the history of the sport, and should win his 1000th game this year, but as far as being a legit NCAA Tournament-caliber team this year: I am not seeing it.

-Wake Forest has just one starter back and is in a bit of rebuilding mode.  I do think Steve Forbes is a good coach and will get this program going soon…just not this year.

-NC State was near the bottom of the conference last year and should be a little better this year, but they still have a ways to go before they will contend for a spot at the top.  I do think Kevin Keatts is a good coach, but after winning just 11 total games last year and looking like they’ll struggle again this year, you have to wonder what the temperature of his seat is going to be.

-I do not think Clemson is an NCAA Tournament-caliber team, but with three starters back from a team that did get a little hot down the stretch, they could be better than all of the rest of the non-NCAA Tourney teams in this conference.  They have always been a tough defensive team and likely will be again this year.  I am a little surprised they are picked behind some of the schools that are ahead of them.

-Louisville = Train Wreck.  It has been a mess for the last several years, they made a coaching change in the middle of last season, and have a new head coach in Kenny Payne this year who has never been a head coach at any level of basketball.  Now, he could turn out to be amazing: who knows?  But the idea that a program like Louisville would resort to hiring someone with no head coaching experience AT ALL is a little alarming.  He also has his work cut out for him.  Louisville won just 13 total games last year, lost a lot of key players, and appear to be in complete rebuilding mode.

-Boston College had a very suck-tacular year last year, but they were playing a lot better in the final couple of weeks of the season.  Four starters are back, and I think they may surprise some people.  I do not think they will be in the top of the league, but it would not shock me at all to see them much closer to the middle than the bottom.

-As for Pitt and Georgia Tech??  Yeah…they’re at the bottom.

FUN FACT!  Duke and North Carolina are just eight miles apart!!  And they have NEVER met in the NCAA Tournament (in an odd numbered year)!!!

Chad and the panel take a look at this year’s Big East Conference.  Everyone is big on Creighton and we feel they’re good enough to earn a protected seed and advance to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament.  We also like this Villanova team despite the departure of Jay Wright and think they’ll also be a potential protected seed.  Other possible tournament teams include Xavier who welcomes Sean Miller back as head coach, Uconn, Providence (who lost most of their starters but still have some good pieces, and St. John’s.  We discuss all 11 schools, who we think will get to the tournament, and more…

COMMENTS FROM DAVID:

So one of the stories of the OVC this year is the number of teams that are no longer in the league.  Both Murray State and Belmont have left to join the Missouri Valley Conference in a move that probably makes sense for those programs, but it is a major setback for the overall strength of the OVC.  For the last four or five years the OVC had a team that was either inside the bubble or close to it, and managed to win three NCAA Tournament games.  Now it is arguably one of the five weakest conferences in all of D1.

-Morehead State has won 20+ games for the past two seasons and Head Coach Preston Spradlin has done a great job building the program up.  The problem is that they lost so much from last year’s team and have just one starter back, but they are still the preseason favorites to win the league.  They did hit the transfer portal and appear to be adding some guys who were contributing role players at their previous programs so there is reason to be optimistic.

-Tennessee State is getting quite a bit of preseason love, but they had a rather unspectacular season last year where they won just 14 total games and they lost most of their key players.  Similar to Morehead State, they do have several players who appeared to be key players and have D1 experience, so we will see how they come together.

-UT Martin is picked to finish 3rd.  This team has failed to win more than 10 total games for the past three seasons, so the idea that they’re picked to finish 3rd just shows you that the league has dropped off somewhat.  Four starters are back and that experience should help them some, but they won just two of their last twelve to finish the season last year.

-I am a little surprised that SEMO is not picked to finish higher.  Their leading scorer is back in Phillip Russell who is just a sophomore, so for him to produce the way that he did as a freshman could make him one of the key players in the conference.  They also add some good looking freshmen and transfers, and I think they have a chance to win the league, which is why I am a little surprised they were picked 4th.

-SIUE finally finished in the KenPom top-300 last season!  They checked in at…298th.  So, they have not exactly been setting the world on fire recently.  But, there are some reasons to be optimistic this year.  The overall strength of the league is weaker so they should be more competitive.  Three starters are back and they were playing better at the end of the year than they were at the beginning.

-Little Rock joins the conference this year after previously being a member of the Sun Belt.  They have had some good teams in the past but last year was not one of them.  They won just 9 total games, and just two of those came after February 1st.  Four starters are back so that experience should help them some, and while last year’s Sun Belt wasn’t a great league it was still stronger than what this year’s OVC appears to be, so they should be able to be more competitive.

-Southern Indiana is new to D1.  They were a top level program at the D2 level, and I think they will be competitive in D1 (especially in this conference) rather quickly.  As for their first year this year, even though the league is somewhat weaker they are likely to struggle.

-I thought Tennessee Tech hit a home run when they hired John Pelphrey as head coach, but after three seasons it just has not come together for them yet.  Having said that, I am a little surprised to see them picked this low.  I do not think they will win the league but I am expecting them to at least be in the top half of it.  Granted, just three players return, but two of them were starters and they appear to added some nice players via the transfer portal.

-Eastern Illinois was one of the worst teams in all of D1 last year.  I think they will  be better this year…but only because it would be almost impossible to be worse.

-Lindenwood, along with Southern Indiana, begins their four-year transition into D1 this year.
