All-Access at the CAA Tournament: Quarterfinal Sunday

Conference tournaments are about basketball but also so much more: the fans, bands, cheerleaders, etc. The CAA Tournament is taking place in Washington, DC, this weekend and we could not be more excited to be there in person! HoopsHD will be covering all of the angles so you can look forward to a cascade of coverage in the days ahead. Jon Teitel gets us started with a recap of the quarterfinal quadruple-header on Sunday.

Not sure if you can ever be “ready” for a quarterfinal quadruple-header but I got a nice night of sleep followed by a pregame meal of a cold ham and cheese sandwich/pretzels/chocolate chip cookie. Let’s tip off a LONG day of games:

GAME #1: Northeastern vs. Towson
The Huskies got out to an early 18-8 lead and I wondered if I should just start tearing my bracket into pieces. However, it did not last long as the Tigers came storming back to make it a 1-PT deficit at halftime. It felt like a Towson home game with a lot of black & yellow in the crowd as they took the lead and increased it to double-digits in the 2nd half.

Northeastern kept fighting and actually cut the lead to a single point in the final 2 minutes before running out of gas as Towson won 68-61. Cam Holden finished with 18 PTS/6 REB/6 AST and Nicolas Timberlake scored a game-high 25 PTS on 5-7 3PM. In the postgame press conference I asked Towson coach Pat Skerry how it felt to be 1 game over .500 after going 1-31 in his 1st year as coach a decade ago. He thanked me for bringing up such a painful memory(!), admitted that his 1st year was a hard year, but is proud of both his university/players.

I followed up with Northeastern coach Bill Coen about Towson’s terrific turnaround (they went 4-14 last year before winning 25 games [and counting] this year). He responded that with the transfer portal it is hard to predict whose roster is the best because there is a lot of unpredictability, but also gave Coach Skerry a lot of credit for assembling a great team.

GAME #2: Delaware vs. Drexel
The Dragons started 0-11 from 3-PT range but the Blue Hens were not much better from behind the arc as they started 2-10, but they did have great balanced scoring (5 guys who each scored 9-17 PTS). CAA POY Cam Wynter tried to keep Drexel in the game singlehandedly, and almost did (he scored 26 of his team’s 1st 44 PTS!), but FR Jyare Davis played well beyond his years and finished with a double-double (17 PTS/10 REB) as Delaware won 66-56. In the postgame press conference I asked Delaware coach Martin Ingelsby if his team needs to make more threes to beat Towson (they only made 5 in each of their 2 losses to the Tigers this year), and if he is a believer in the “it is hard to beat the same team 3 times in 1 season” theory. He admitted that anytime you can make 3-PT shots it helps and that there is indeed something to the theory: he lost a title game in that very fashion when he was in high school.

I decided to see if Drexel coach Zach Spiker agreed that a season featuring a COVID pause, a broken bus, and a leaky roof qualified as the craziest of his career. He smiled and responded that at the time he thought last season was the craziest. He told his team to keep a straight face even though they had a lot of ups and downs. He knows that every school has adversity and that you just have to overcome it…but confirmed that the last 2 seasons have featured some of the most unique situations ever.

GAME #3: Elon vs. UNCW
The pregame dinner was delicious: mac and cheese/flank steak/pulled chicken with mustard BBQ sauce/lemon bars/cookies! Hunter McIntosh had a huge 1st half for the Phoenix with 13 PTS/5-6 FG as his team led 36-31 at intermission, but it all went wrong in the 2nd half as the team only made 2-13 FG through the 1st 13 minutes of the 2nd stanza. The Seahawks finally took the lead 2 minutes after halftime and pulled away from there. Trazarien White finished with a double-double (15 PTS/11 REB) as UNCW won 75-58. In the postgame press conference I asked UNCW coach Takayo Siddle about how he held Darius Burford to 4 PTS in 34 minutes (after Burford had scored at least 23 PTS vs. the Seahawks in each of their 3 previous meetings). He admitted that he talked about that to his team and that Burford is a “hard right-hand driver”, so his team did a really good job of covering the driving lanes and closing them down.

Since Elon coach Mike Schrage spent almost a decade working for Duke in Durham, I was obligated to get his thoughts on the retirement of his former boss. He thought about it for a second and agreed that it is crazy to imagine a college basketball world without Coach K since he is the best of all-time: even though Schrage is biased he thinks Coach K might be the best coach in college sports in general. In addition to being a tremendous coach he called him a tremendous man who replies to letters and calls sick kids in the hospital. Schrage is proud to have played a small part and has to salute him.

GAME #4: Hofstra vs. Charleston
I am sure that it was an enjoyable game…for people who had not spent the past 10 hours at the arena! That is a wrap for today, check back tomorrow for a semifinal doubleheader.

All-Access at the CAA Tournament: HoopsHD interviews Towson cheerleader Cassidy Lapierre

Conference tournaments are about basketball but also so much more: the fans, bands, cheerleaders, etc. The CAA Tournament is taking place in Washington, DC this weekend and we could not be more excited to be there in person! HoopsHD will be covering all of the angles so you can look forward to a cascade of coverage in the days ahead. Jon Teitel’s next interview subject is Towson cheerleader Cassidy Lapierre, who talked about winning a bronze medal and today’s game vs. Northeastern.

You grew up in New Jersey: what made you choose Towson? I had a high school coach who led me here and spoke very highly about the university.

You have been cheering for almost a decade: how did you 1st get into it, and what is the best part? I got into it when I was very little, then stopped for awhile before rejoining in high school. The best part has been bonding with my teammates.

What do you think the role of a college cheerleader is today, and how has it changed over time? Our role is to support all of the teams but also achieve our own goals during competition season. It has become more physical over time and requires more endurance now.

You won a bronze medal at the UCA College Nationals: where does that rank among the highlights of your career? It is probably the best thing that has happened to me: since it is at the college level it is a big accomplishment.

This summer you will be a UCA staff member: what are your responsibilities in such a role? I will have to teach kids of all years and keep them safe: it will be a great opportunity.

You are a sociology/anthropology major with a concentration in criminal justice: why did you pick those subjects, and what do you hope to do after graduating? I grew up watching movies/TV shows about serial killers. Once I saw that I could have a career stopping those kinds of people I wanted to pursue it, so I hope to join the FBI and become a criminal profiler.

What is the atmosphere like on campus this week now that the conference tournament is here (especially since the Tigers are the #1 seed)? We take precautions with COVID but still like to celebrate our team. Everyone on campus is so supportive and it is such a warm community.

How does your school decide who gets to go to DC, and what does it mean to you to see your group doing their thing in front of a national TV audience? We all volunteer for games so it depends on our position. Being here is huge/exciting/a great honor.

Does your squad have anything extra-special planned for the CAA Tournament this weekend? Not specifically: just some stunts here and there.

Any predictions for today’s game vs. Northeastern? I predict that we will win since we already beat them in January…but we lost to them in February so I will not jinx it!

All-Access at the CAA Tournament: HoopsHD interviews Towson pom squad member Alexa Kasten

Jon Teitel’s next interview subject is Towson pom squad member Alexa Kasten, who talked about raising money for a good cause and today’s game vs. Northeastern.

You grew up in Maryland: what made you choose Towson? I just wanted to be close to home and was interested in joining the team.

You have been dancing for most of your life: how did you 1st get into it, and what is the best part? My sister started dancing when she was 4 and I jumped into it when I was just 2 years old. The best part is the relationships that I have made and the mentors I have met.

What do you think the role of a college pom squad is today, and how has it changed over time? It was definitely different during COVID but has allowed me to show my leadership skills.

You served as team secretary this year and will be team president next year: what is the key to being a good leader? Demonstrating that you are responsible for making the team members the best they can be.

You are in the pre-nursing program: why did you pick nursing, and what do you hope to do after graduating? I have always wanted to help people and be there for them. I would love to be a pediatric travel nurse so I can help kids.

Last year you participated in a dance marathon to raise funds for a local hospital: how much importance do you place on community service? It is a very big thing in my life because I love helping others: last year I raised more than $500!

What is the atmosphere like on campus this week now that the conference tournament is here (especially since the Tigers are the #1 seed)? It has been very exciting: everyone is drawn to our community and wants to see our team succeed.

How does your school decide who gets to go to DC, and what does it mean to you to see your group doing their thing in front of a national TV audience? It means a lot: I am excited that we made it this far and can cheer on our Tigers in person. It is mostly based on availability and we love to give everyone on the team the same opportunities.

Does your squad have anything extra-special planned for the CAA Tournament this weekend? Just being as happy/enthusiastic as we can be.

Any predictions for today’s game vs. Northeastern? I am hoping that we win and can take it to the next level!

All-Access at the CAA Tournament: Northeastern vs. William & Mary

Jon Teitel gets us started with a recap of the only 1st round game on the bracket for Saturday.

You know that it is March because even the food gets taken up a notch: orange chicken/veggies/rice/noodles/cheesecake/peach tart! The Huskies beat the Tribe by a silly score of 62-28 just 10 days ago so everyone was curious to see how the rematch would go. By “everyone” I mean “the hundreds of fans who showed up to watch a pair of teams with a combined record of 13-47”, but even though there were plenty of good seats available it actually turned into a competitive little game at the end:

Let’s tip it off:

I was unsure if either team would bring its bands/cheerleaders/etc. since 1 of them would immediately be heading home after tonight’s game…but they were both well-represented:

There have been some recent revisions to COVID policies in DC, so after an entire year of watching Georgetown with masks they are now optional. Northeastern SR F Jason Strong knocked down a pair of threes in the 1st half to give his team a 1-PT lead at halftime…but since the score was 18-17 after 20 minutes (thanks to a combined 9-41 performance from the field) let’s just show a photo of him and move right along:

The crowd needed a pick-me-up in the 2nd half and got it via some human surfing!

Having watched Georgetown SR Kaiden Rice lose each of his past 20 games, it was rather refreshing to see his younger brother (William & Mary FR Tyler Rice) come to DC and perform well under pressure. He made a pair of threes in the 2nd half, finished with 15 PTS/0 turnovers, and did his family proud:

I knew that his teammate Brandon Carroll could play some defense (he is 1 of 9 players in the nation with at least 1.4 SPG & 1.4 BPG), but the 6’7” wing showed off the entire arsenal. He kept getting to the basket for layup after layup and finished with a double-double (10 PTS/12 REB):

The Tribe pulled ahead by 5 PTS midway through 2nd half before Northeastern responded from both inside and outside. Mr. Inside was Chris Doherty: the Notre Dame transfer only took 1 shot in the opening stanza, and I STILL do not know if he can score from outside the paint, but he kept spinning/driving to the hoop and putting the ball in the basket with either hand. Mr. Outside was Shaquille Walters: born in London, began his college career at Santa Clara, then moved 3000 miles to the northeast and made a pair of shots from behind the arc (1 from the corner and 1 from the top of the key) to help the Huskies fight all the way back and send it to OT:

Northeastern had not won a single game away from home since before Thanksgiving (a big reason that they are the #9 seed), but Doherty simply refused to let his team lose. He converted an old-fashioned 3-PT play in OT en route to a perfect game with 10-10 FG (joining David Robinson as the only players to put up such stats in a CAA tourney game!), a career-high 26 PTS, and a 68-63 win.

When Doherty played in South Bend 3 years ago he got to face Duke, so in the postgame press conference I figured that I should ask him what he remembers about facing Coach K: he said that he recalled having to face Zion Williamson (26 PTS/9 REB/4 BLK in a 22-PT win by the Blue Devils), and was stunned to see on Twitter yesterday that tickets for the Krzyzewski home finale tonight were going for $80,000! When Rice stepped onto the podium I inquired as to whether he had a chance to catch up with his brother in DC, but he did not get to do so since Kaiden was busy scoring 9 PTS off the bench in a loss at Xavier. Maybe next time I will remember to bring my camera to the press conference: fortunately, I have 7 more games in the next 3 days to get it right! That’s a wrap for the 1st round, but check back tomorrow for a quarterfinal quadruple-header!
