Happy College Basketball Season!! (sort of)

The first open exhibition game of the 2021-2022 season takes place tonight between the Miami Hurricanes and Nova Southeastern.  It a game that will likely be a huge mismatch, and it’s a game that technically doesn’t mean anything, but it is the first college basketball game of any kind involving a div1 team that has been played since last year’s championship game between Gonzaga and Baylor.  It also marks a stretch where there is at least one college basketball game every day until the Monday after Selection Sunday, which means are currently at the moment where we have the longest expanse of college basketball ahead of us!  So, on that note, HAPPY COLLEGE BASKETBALL SEASON!!!

We discuss all 11 schools in the Big East, and talk about how Villanova once again appears to be the clear favorite and looks to be a top ten caliber team.  UConn is another top 25 team to keep an eye on, and may have one of their better teams in years.  From there, it is a bit of a toss up and there isn’t much consensus.  Saint John’s looks like they may have a strong team, Providence has some good pieces as well, Xavier has started strong the past few seasons but tapered off down the stretch and may end up doing the same thing again, Seton Hall has a team that could end up in the field, and much more!

COMMENTS FROM DAVID:

-The conference has bloated out its membership with the additions of Eastern Kentucky, Jax State, and Central Arkansas, and is aggressively looking to expand even more in the future to as many as 16 (or even 17!) full members.  Much of this is being done for football purposes.  The league currently does not currently sponsor football but plans to do so soon.

-Liberty has been the class of the league the last several years and I do not foresee that changing.  They’ve won more than 20 games each of the last five years, including 23 wins last year despite the shortened season.  Darius McGee returns as one of the top players in the conference.  I don’t know if the Flames are good enough to push for a spot inside the bubble and make the NCAA Tournament if they fail to win the ASun conference tourney, but I do expect them to once again run away from the pack.

-Eastern Kentucky joins the league this year.  They won 22 games a year ago and Coach A.W. Hamilton appears to have this program on the rise.  Three starters are back, including Braxton Beverly.  This is a team that loves to pressure: they can be a lot of fun to watch and at times a big headache to play against.

-Bellarmine is in their second year of transition but is already good enough to make some noise in this league despite the fact that they aren’t full blown D1 yet.  The Knights (like Grand Canyon, and Northern Kentucky, and North Dakota State, and several other programs that recently transitioned) could make a lot of noise very quickly once they complete that transition.  As for now, it wouldn’t shock me at all if we saw them qualify for the CIT.

-Lipscomb had a so-so 15-win season last year, and with three starters back (including Ahsan Asadullah) we should see improvement this year.  They once again look to have both balance and depth.

-If there is a dark horse in this league I think it’s Stetson.  The Hatters seemed to play better down the stretch last year than they did out of the gate and have all five starters back.  They appear to have a solid backcourt and the overall experience could result in them being successful.

-Jacksonville State is also new to the league: while they are typically a transfer-heavy program where we often see quite a bit of turnover, all five starters are actually back from a season ago.  That experience alone is reason for Coach Ray Harper and company to be optimistic about this year.

-I happen to think that Matt Driscoll is a fantastic coach who has done a great job with North Florida, but last year they team went through a bit of a setback where they won just eight games.  However, with four starters back and a coach who seems to be able to improve players over time, I expect to see the Ospreys take a big step forward this year.

-The success and excitement of some of those great Dunk City teams feel like they’re a long way away from where FGCU currently is.  They were below .500 in conference last year, and have won just ten total games the last two years.  Three starters are back along with TCU grad transfer Kevin Samuel in the frontcourt, so hopefully that experience translates into some improvement.

-North Alabama has four starters back but is still going through the growing pains of transitioning.  They won just seven games a year ago and could be in for another tough haul this year.

-Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, and newcomer Central Arkansas look to be bringing up the rear.  Jacksonville does have some experienced players returning and I would guess they are the best out of this group of three…but I still think they’ll be closer to the bottom of the standings than the top.

COMMENTS FROM DAVID:

-This is the last year we will see the conference in this format with UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati all departing (largely because of football interests).

-Once again, Memphis looks to be stacked with talent.  The question is whether or not that talent can productively mesh, which in the past it hasn’t always done.  In recent years it’s almost fair to say that it has NEVER done that.  The Tigers did end on a high note by winning last year’s NIT: they do have a lot of good pieces back and some good looking newcomers as well.  They certainly have all the pieces to be a top-25 caliber team.

-Only one starter is back for Houston from last year’s Final Four team, but they add some impressive looking transfers as well as some players from last year that can step into key roles this year.  That is a good mix.  For the last four years this Houston team has exceeded any and all preseason expectations by quite a bit.  I’m not saying that I think they’ll return to the Final Four, but I do expect them to once again be a top-25 caliber program and be well-positioned come March.

-I seem to say this every year but I really like this Wichita State team.  They were on fire down the stretch last year, they made the NCAA Tournament (albeit just the First Four), and they have a lot of good players back.  They don’t seem to be getting a ton of love, at least not by top-25 standards, but I think the Shockers could once again have a hell of a year.

-Kendrick Davis is back at SMU, who averaged over 19 ppg a year ago, as well as two other starters.  Coach Tim Jankovich appears to have this program headed in the right direction.  That, and with the addition of some key transfers, they should be in the hunt for an NCAA bid come March.

-UCF had a rather unspectacular season last year but they were definitely better down the stretch than they were out of the gate, and with all five starters back they could make some noise this year.  They have a pretty well-balanced team and some really good outside shooters.

-Cincinnati had a sub-par season a year ago, and followed that up with a rather tumultuous offseason that resulted in a coaching change.  The good news is they landed Wes Miller (formerly of UNC Greensboro), who I think is a great coach.  The bad news is they still have some rebuilding to do before they get back to the level we were used to seeing them at before.  But, there starters are back, and they appear to have some depth, so there are a few reasons for optimism.

-Tulsa is coached by Frank Haith.  Should I go on?  Okay, so we like to pick on Frank!  They were mediocre for much of the year last year but did have some notable wins against the top of the league, including a Houston team who went on to make the Final Four.  Only two starters are back, but they do seem to be adding some key transfers so don’t write them off entirely just yet.

-Temple seems to be pretty far removed from being the consistent NCAA Tournament-caliber program that they used to be.  They were just 4-10 in league play a year ago, and while they do appear to have a a decent backcourt this year they’ve still got a ways to go.

-I keep waiting for Tulane to take some big steps forward.  I feel they have a really good coach in Ron Hunter who will be able to make improvements there over time.  I don’t know if this will be the year but they do return some key pieces and will hopefully be fun to keep an eye on.

-South Florida and East Carolina could be in for long seasons.  USF is hoping to get some help from some of their transfers, while East Carolina returns four starters and should be more experienced.

Season preview: HoopsHD interviews Tennessee SR G/F Rae Burrell

We are keeping our fingers crossed in the hope that we can return to a “normal” version of college basketball this fall: fans in the stands, announcers without masks, etc. Nobody knows exactly what is going to happen but we will try to restore some order with season previews featuring the best players/coaches in the country. We continue our coverage with Tennessee SR G/F Rae Burrell. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Rae about being a great FT shooter and her expectations for this season.

You were born/raised in Las Vegas: what made you choose Tennessee? I chose Tennessee because of the legacy that has been built over the years: I just wanted to be a part of building onto that legacy.

You play for Coach Kellie Harper: what makes her such a great coach, and what is it like to play for a married couple (1 of her assistants is her husband Jon)? She played for Pat Summitt and has won championships. She knows what it feels like to win a championship and what it takes to win a championship. She really tries to give us all of the knowledge that she possesses. She has a vision and knows what she wants each of us to do to reach that goal. We just have to play, lock in, and follow her plan. Since she has the experience of playing here we feel like we can trust her and what she knows: we also trust that her system works because she has done it herself. She is a really passionate coach and really cares about us, which really helps us to work hard for her. They both just continue to trust me and let me play, which helps build my confidence and makes me want to work even harder. They give me a lot of freedom on the court, which helps me a lot. I also put in a lot of extra work on my own, which has really helped me develop my game. I do not really look at them as husband and wife during practices, games, or on trips: they are just our coaches. At the end of the day when we are just hanging around it is a cool family atmosphere and you know that they are husband and wife. Their children (Jackson and Kiley) are around us a lot too, which makes it feel like all of us are in one big family.

Last January you scored a team-high 18 PTS in a 6-PT loss to UConn: how do you explain the rivalry with the Huskies to someone who has never seen it in person? It is the history behind it with Pat and Geno Auriemma, who are considered two of the best coaches in college basketball history, as well as the players who played in some big games. It is an intense game of who is going to be the best while playing on a big stage. It is really fun because of the atmosphere and having so many fans at these games. It is just so loud: probably the loudest game that I will ever be a part of.

Last year you made all 16 of your FT attempts taken in the final 4 minutes of games: what is the secret to making FTs when the game is on the line? Just having a routine: you have to do the same thing every single time. I know my routine when I get up there: 2 dribbles, spin ball, breathe in, and relax my shoulders. When I relax my shoulders I feel like I can really focus on shooting the free throw and I never take my eye off the rim. I imagine the ball going in as I prepare to shoot the free throw. Just sticking to my routine is what helps me make it every time. There is not a certain number of free throws that I take every week: when I get in the gym at the end of my workouts I will shoot until I make 10 free throws in a row. Sometimes it is quick but I just make sure to get that in at the end of a workout when I am tired. When you shoot free throws in a game you are most likely going to be winded or tired so that is how I practice them.

In the 2021 NCAA tourney you beat MTSU before losing to Michigan: what did you learn from that tourney run that will help you this year? That was my first NCAA Tournament experience: my freshman year I did not really play in the tournament and then my sophomore year it got canceled due to COVID. I think having that experience of just being there and actually being in the game and experiencing the intensity of the game will help greatly this year because now I know what it will look like.

You have made the SEC Academic Honor Roll during each of the past 2 years: how do you balance your work on the court with your work in the classroom? It is really just about time management. You have to really manage your schedule and figure out what times you can get your work done and what times you can squeeze training in without interrupting the time when you have to get homework done. I think that really managing your time and getting things done in a timely manner instead of waiting until the last minute is key.

Your brutal non-conference schedule this year includes games against Texas/Oklahoma State/Virginia Tech/Stanford/UConn: which of these games do you feel will present your biggest test? The obvious answer is probably UConn because that is the big rival, but I feel like all of our games are going to be tests that can help our team grow no matter the outcome. We play three Final Four teams (including Stanford at home) and our conference is going to be even better this year. Each game we play will challenge us in some way and help us find opportunities to grow as a team and get ready for the SEC.

Your mother Ann played basketball at Nevada, your father John was an All-American in the long jump at Nevada, and your cousin Evan Roquemore played basketball at Santa Clara: who is the best athlete in the family? I think I am the best athlete in the family. My parents gave me all of my athleticism so that is where I get it from. My dad is really athletic: ever since I was young he has always been good at whatever he does. He does not let us win easily and taught us how to compete as we were growing up.

You turned 21 last summer: what did you do for the big day? I just went to dinner with a few of my teammates and ate some sushi. My birthday was on a Monday and we had practice the next day so we did not stay out late: just went back to the dorm and watched a movie. My roommates and one of our managers (Riane) hung up a “Happy Birthday” sign in the room and got me a cake: it was a nice surprise!

What are your goals for this season, and what are your expectations for this season? My goal this season is the same as every season: to push myself to be the best I can be. This year I want to make sure I am a really good leader and I want to lead this team to winning games/championships. I want to focus on helping them and showing them and leading by example in terms of what we want for the program. Just being a really good leader is my main objective. As far as some personal goals I want to improve my assists/rebounds, but overall I just want to be a good leader for the team and helping us win is the main plan.
