The Hoops HD Selection Committee – Friday Edition

Friday night was the second night that the Hoops HD Selection Committee met via Zoom conference call. There were two main tasks that were taken care of – the first was to fill out the remaining at-large spots that were able to be filled based on final games in the conference tournament games played on Friday. No bid thief was possible in the SEC, and a spot opened up in the A-10 when VCU was named one of the last three at-large teams along with Louisville and UCLA.

The second and more laborious task was to begin seeding the field. We ended up seeding the top eight lines – votes were done two lines at a time. Committee members ended up choosing their top 12 teams and the top 12 vote-getters were subsequently ranked 1 through 12. Afterwards, each subsequent round of voting ended up with each member choosing 12 teams and then the top 12 vote-getters would be ranked 1 through 12. Here is the board as of Friday night (late night Mountain West game nonwithstanding):

Noteworthy this year is that teams like Georgetown and Oregon State could “steal” automatic bids in the Big East and Pac-12, respectively – even though contingency teams have not been voted into the field yet. If Creighton and Colorado end up winning their respective conference tournaments, there will be two more at-large spots that will open up. The American is also a potential bid-thief conference with Cincinnati and Memphis still alive in that conference tournament.

Our other task will be to seed the remainder of the NCAA Tournament field and to do an initial scrub of the seed list to make corrections as the Committee sees fit. With Virginia and Kansas having to withdraw from their respective conference tournaments, we will also make adjustments as necessary should they (or any other team) announce that they will be unable to compete in the NCAA Tournament this season.

Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews Winthrop SO F DJ Burns

Last Sunday Winthrop beat Campbell by 27 PTS in the Big South tourney title game to earn an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament. It seems hard to believe but the Eagles have more conference tourney titles (2) than losses (1) since last March! Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with DJ Burns about playing against Zion Williamson and what it feels like to make the NCAA tourney.

In 2018 you were the #3 high school prospect in South Carolina: did you ever play with or against either of the 2 guys ranked ahead of you (Zion Williamson/Ja Morant)? I have never played with Ja but I played against Zion a few times. There was 1 game where we each scored 20+ PTS against each other. I played him right in the middle of the time when he was blowing up: our coach said that our scouting report for our game against him was simply “do your best”!

You began your career at Tennessee but decided to redshirt: what made you decide to transfer to Winthrop, and how would it feel if you end up facing the Vols next week? Things did not work out for me at Tennessee and it was not the right situation for me. If we end up playing them it would be the most fun game of my entire season. They are a good team and Rick Barnes is a phenomenal coach but we are not scared of anyone so it would be a good game.

You play for Coach Pat Kelsey: what makes him such a good coach, and what is the most important thing that you have learned from him so far? He is 1 of the best all-around coaches/people I have ever met. He has an intense energy and has never had a bad day. He brings good vibes and teaches us things off the court as well because he is invested in us as both players and people.

Last year you were named conference ROY: what did it mean to you to receive such an outstanding honor? It was truly a blessing from God. My coaches believed in me and allowed me to be comfortable by setting me up for success.

In your season-opener this year you scored 6 PTS in an 8-PT road win at UNC-Greensboro: what impressed you the most about the Spartans? Their energy. We do not find many opponents who can give us back the fire that we have but that is exactly what they were. We never underestimated them: Isaiah Miller is a great player/competitor and they have a lot of good pieces.

In late-January you scored 4 PTS in a 2-PT home loss to UNC-Asheville after blowing an 8-PT lead with under 5 minutes left: was it a meaningless loss (because it did not prevent you from winning a championship) or was it a devastating loss (because you were literally 3 PTS away from having an undefeated regular season)? I considered it a heat-check. We let our guard down for a second and got complacent, but it showed that we needed to kick it up a notch and we fixed it for the rest of the year.

Last Sunday you scored 22 PTS/11-12 FG and had 0 turnovers in a 27-PT win over Campbell to clinch the Big South tourney title: what did it mean to you to win a championship, and what was the feeling like in your locker room afterward? The feeling was crazy: it took a while for it to set in. We have had to deal with so much this year: some teams could have felt that they were done but we just kept fighting. To reach that point and see that it paid off was a breath of fresh air.

What is it like to be a college basketball player during a pandemic? It is boring! There are a lot more distractions when your season does not depend on where you go and who you hang out with. I think I will carry myself the same after the pandemic is over: you have to be consistent/focused.

Your teammate Chandler Vaudrin was named conference POY/conference tourney MVP: what makes him such a great all-around player? So many things. He is a leader, fierce competitor, hard worker, and we know that we can count on him when times get tough and we need to respond. You cannot do too much to guard him: he can shoot over you or drive by you and is 1 of the best passers I have ever played with. He produces triple-doubles all the time.

What kind of seed do you think you deserve, and what kind of seed do you think you will get? I feel like we deserve to be taken seriously but I know that will not happen because we are a smaller school. We do not get much respect but we will go out and earn that respect: they will not forget about this year’s team. I predict we will be a 12 seed.

Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews Mount St. Mary’s coach Dan Engelstad

Last Tuesday Mount St. Mary’s beat Bryant by 5 PTS in the NEC tourney title game to earn an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament. The Mountaineers had a 3-game losing streak in mid-February but won each of their final 4 games on the road to claim the school’s 1st NCAA tourney bid since 2017. Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with Coach Dan Engelstad about coaching in the TBT and what it feels like to make the NCAA tourney.

At St. Mary’s College you served as a team captain and graduated as the school’s all-time leader with 419 career AST: what is the key to being a good leader, and what is the key to being a good PG? The key to being a good leader is being transparent/clear and sharing your vision so that people can understand it. There has to be leadership from within so that it empowers people to be the best version of themselves. As a PG you need to know the offense/defense inside and out, set the standard, and be selfless so that your teammates can see that you care about them.

After graduating you became an assistant to Coach Milan Brown at both Mt. St. Mary’s/Holy Cross: how did you like working for him, and what is the most important thing that you ever learned from him? He is still my coaching mentor. I talked with him after the title game earlier this week because he was the 1 who taught me how to build a program with a family dynamic.

In the 2008 NCAA tourney you had a 9-PT win over Coppin State in the 1st 4 and then a 39-PT loss to North Carolina: what is it like to win an NCAA tourney game, and what is it like to face Roy Williams in March? I was 22 years old at the time. I remember standing at half-court before the Carolina game. Coach Williams came over and congratulated me on a good season: I looked him right in the eye and said, “Thanks: you had a good season too”! The arena was packed with 40,000 people and the crowd did not know who to cheer for in the 1st 4: it was a win that I will always cherish.

You were named head coach at Southern Vermont in 2013 when they were coming off of a 1-24 season, but 2 years later you were a 25-win conference champion who went undefeated in conference play: how were able to turn things around so dramatically in just a couple of years? Really good players/people. We brought in some talented players who believed in our vision. We played a fun up-tempo style and winning created buy-in from our team.

In the summer of 2017 you were the coach of Armored Athlete: what was your favorite part of being in “The Basketball Tournament”? Learning. I was a D-3 head coach at the time and could not work with my guys over the summer, so to be around high-level guys and learn from them/talk to them was great because I got some instructions about how to win games. When you are in the postseason it is about survive and advance: it is important to get experience in those moments so that you can remain calm/poised during a big game.

You were hired at the Mount as head coach in 2018 and took over a squad of 8 sophomores/7 freshmen: were you surprised to have back-to-back seasons of 21+ losses with such a young roster, and could you see the light at the end of the tunnel? When you are in the middle of it there is a lot that you need to learn. The 1 thing that our staff did was to keep working/plugging away. We knew that it was a building process: it is hard to win when you are that young.

JR Damian Chong Qui has averaged 15 PPG/6 RPG/6 APG over the past 3 weeks despite playing 42 minutes/game: how has your 5’8” PG been able to play so well without ever getting a chance to rest? Before the conference tourney I told him that he would not be getting a sub. The media timeouts gave him a little more time to rest and he is as tough as they come. He is in great shape and always working on his game. He has a great motor and a huge heart so he deserved that moment.

You had to beat each of the top-2 seeds on the road to clinch the NEC tourney title on Tuesday: what did it mean to you to win a title, and can you even remember the last time you even had a home game (February 17)?! It has been a long time. It speaks to our guys: you have to be physically/mentally tough to win games on the road. There was crazy adversity but something clicked and we got hot at the right time: we have a great young core.

What is it like to be a college basketball coach during a pandemic? It is the hardest thing that I have ever experienced. There is so much uncertainty that you have to navigate through: guys are sick of us telling them to be smart but the reward was great and we got to celebrate it together. It is not easy on any of us: we try to build a family here and we are all better for having gone through it and fighting until the end.

What kind of seed do you think you deserve, and what kind of seed do you think you will get? I have not paid too much attention to it because the last few weeks have been such a whirlwind. I have heard that we will probably be in the play-in game but we are just happy to get a chance to compete. We are playing good basketball right now and do not care who we play.
