HoopsHD Staff Bracket – Jan 2, 2026

Chad is in charge of this week’s staff bracket. Every week, one of the HoopsHD Staff members posts their current bracket. Unlike the brakcets posted by our Jon Teitel every Sunday, these are not necessarily predictions of what the Selection Committee will do, but rather are a current snapshot of where we believe the teams should be ranked as of today. Chad’s bracket, below, is through all games of January 1, 2026. Below the bracket are his notes and potential comments/critiques from other staff members.

CHAD’S NOTES:

  • My top four teams out were, in order, Ohio State, TCU, Boise State and Oklahoma. If Boise State had not started the year with a home loss to Hawai’i Pacific, they would have easily been in the field.
  • I had 12 other teams on my board that got some consideration for an at-large bid: California, George Mason, Illinois State, New Mexico, Washington, Creighton, Nevada, VCU, Santa Clara, Wisconsin, San Diego State and Texas A&M. Anyone neither in my field nor on these lists did not deserve any attention.
  • Undefeated Miami-Ohio is seeded on my 11 line, while one of my First Four games (Miami-Florida vs Butler) is on the 12 line. This is NOT because I believe Mother Miami is inside the bubble. Rather, all four game locations on my 11 line were Thursday-Saturday sites. At least one of the two at-large First Four games (and at least one of the two 16 seed games as well) must play into a Friday-Sunday site. Therefore, the First Four game was moved down a seed line and Miami-Ohio moved up.
  • I love what Iowa State has done so far this season, and their blowout win at Purdue was amazing. But I actually like UConn’s overall profile slightly better and gave the Huskies my #3 overall seed behind Michigan and Arizona.
  • Which conference is the best? Well if you go by number of bids, it is a four way tie between the four power conferences — each of them put 9 teams into my field. The SEC notably only has one protected (top four) seed, while the Big 12 led the way with 6 protected seeds. The ACC nailed 3 protected seeds and one of their best overall showings in year, though two of their 9 teams are in the Frst Four in Dayton.
  • I ended up with five Big East teams in my field, which I did ot expect to happen. After UConn, however, Villanova, St John’s and Seton Hall all look like tourney teams as of today, and Butler was literally my last team in.
  • The only other conference with multple bids was the West Coast with Gonzaga and St. Mary’s. Yes, the Mountain West is a one bid league this week.
  • Kentucky and St. John’s are matched up in the first round. Some may point out that this is a rematch of a regular season game and should be disfavored in the first round. However, with two SEC 8 seeds and two SEC 9 seeds, St. John’s only possible opponents would have been Kentucky or Auburn — both regular season rematches. Having them play Auburn would have placed St. John’s potentially up agianst UConn in the second round — which is not permitted at all. So the UK/Johnnies rematch was the only possible move — and a great storyline to boot!

STAFF COMMENTS:

Comments from John Stalica:

– The first three lines of the bracket are pretty easy to lay out at this point. It does get slightly tougher once you get down to the #4 line. Louisville, for example, has to be thrilled to see a team like Tennessee on the complete opposite side of the bracket. They just do not have an answer for the Vols regardless of where the game is played.

– The rubber is about to hit the road for a team like Central Florida. A win at Texas A&M is their only real win of note, but they begin Big 12 play with a home game against Kansas and a road trip to an improved Oklahoma State team. Win one of those games and they are a legitimate top-half tournament team. Win neither and suddenly the question marks return.

– The Miami Hurricanes must have gotten advance notice of Chad’s bracket. In Dallas on New Year’s Eve, they were so overjoyed that their football team ended up dethroning Ohio State (and I’m not even sold that was an upset). Not bad to go from last year’s Stallings Award winner to the NCAA Tournament field, even if they have to go through a security checkpoint in Dayton to do so.

– Chad could just as easily have swapped out Butler for Creighton as his last team in. The Bulldogs have a neutral-court win against Virginia but too many near-misses to be on the right side of the cut line right now. It took Greg McDermott a while to figure out his team’s chemistry, but the Jays are white-hot right now (I’d call them red-hot, but red is the color of their in-state rival) and also coming off of a win at home against Butler.

– Tulsa has a similar profile to UCF, only without a Tier 1 win. They open up play in the American with 3 of their first 4 games on the road and follow up that stretch with a game at home against Memphis. I’m starting to wonder what it will take to relegate the American to discussion on Under The Radar on Wednesdays.

– Too bad Chattanooga isn’t the team to beat in the SoCon this year. I don’t believe we’ve ever had an NCAA Tournament bracket that has featured the flagship Tennessee (aka UTK) alongside both Chattanooga and UT-Martin. There is a slight possibility that could happen in 2026.

COMMENTS FROM DAVID: As much as i want to be critical of this bracket, and really of anything Chad does in any capacity, I find myself agreeing with most of it, or at least understanding what I think is a logical thought process. Tulsa on the 9-line seems a bit high, but then again Tulsa could easily end up there if they blow through the American, which they should do.

-I did want to mention Nebraska simply because they are one of the more exciting stories of the year and because no one else has yet. They are in the top ten of his seedlist, and if you’re selecting/seeding strictly off of profiles, that’s where they belong. That’s how I do all my brackets, and I’d have them exactly where Chad does. Having said that, while I like Nebraska’s team a lot, I’m not sold that they are one of the ten best overall teams in the nation even if their profile right now is as outstanding as it is. They may be one of the TWENTY best teams in the nation, but at #9 overall they are one spot away from the #2 line, and I just don’t believe them to be THAT good. But, they may prove me wrong! They have so far. We will see what they do tonight against Michigan State.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Friday, Jan 2nd

NEWS AND NOTES:

-Hawaii won their first road game of the season and they did not mess around doing it. They absolutely clobbered UC Riverside 88-45 to improve to 11-2 overall on the season.

-Also in the Big West, UC San Diego fell on the road at Cal Poly 67-65. UCSD had two possessions late in the game where they could have tied it, but came up empty both times. Minus winning out, this loss probably knocks UCSD too far away from the bubble for them to reach it.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-USC AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten). USC is a really good team that’s having a really good year and even has a path to earning a protected seed. So if Michigan only beats them by 40 it would have been a hell of a good day for the Trojans!! Michigan has been mauling everyone and it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them blow out another top 25 team at home. It’s getting to a point to where it would be surprising if anyone was actually able to compete with them.

-LOUISVILLE AT STANFORD (ACC). Louisville is coming off a very impressive road win at California from earlier in the week, which was their first true road win of the season. The Cardinals will be tested again today against a Stanford team that, like their previous opponent, is having a much better season than expected and should be pumped up for the chance to play a high caliber team at home.

-SEATTLE AT GONZAGA (West Coast). This one is interesting. Seattle U is having a good year, but are nowhere near the bubble at the moment. They appear to be way overmatched, but if they were to pull the upset it would catapult them onto the national stage and probably land them in our next bracket projection field. The Zags and Seattle never played prior to being in the same conference, so it’s going to be kind of fun to see them face off this year.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten). This one is going to be fun. Both teams are solidly in the rankings, both are battling for protected seeds, and Nebraska is looking to stay unbeaten. There is a lot of enthusiasm around this Nebraska team, which may be as good as any they’ve ever had, and the atmosphere at this game should be electric.

-NOTRE DAME AT CALIFORNIA (ACC) – ND is on the outside looking in, but can take a big step forward if they’re able to pick this one up on the road. Cal is having a really solid year, but they were pretty much dominated by Louisville in their last game and will be looking to bounce back tonight.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Sam Houston @ Western Kentucky (Conference USA) – these are two of the better teams in CUSA and it should be an interesting matchup

-Lamar @ McNeese (Southland) – McNeese should bounce back from the blowout loss they sustained at Michigan earlier in the week

-Ohio State @ Rutgers (Big Ten) – Ohio State has been out of the spotlight this year, but they’re a solid team who could make a run at making the NCAA Tournament. This should be a winnable road game for them tonight

-West Virginia @ Iowa State (Big 12) – the Cyclones should have no trouble holding serve at home in this one

-Portland @ Saint Mary’s (West Coast) – SMC has been stringing together a lot of good wins lately and should be able to hold serve at home in this one

-Pepperdine @ Santa Clara (West Coast) – Santa Clara still has a lot of work to do and needs to hold serve at home against teams that are nowhere near the bubble

Hanging with the Hoyas: Part 4

HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will spend the upcoming months covering several Georgetown basketball home games, with (hopefully) a very special reward coming in March. He was in attendance Wednesday night for the Hoyas’ game at Capital 1 Arena and prepared this photo essay about their matchup against St. John’s.

I guessed they used up all the great food for the Rangers-Caps game earlier today, as my pregame meal was a Chick-fil-A sandwich/potato chips/chocolate chip cookie. I thought our only 2 national COY award-winners in the house were going to be Rick Pitino (2025)/Ed Cooley (2022)…until I noticed that our TV analyst tonight on FS1 is former St. Joe’s coach Phil Martelli (2004):

Coach Cooley’s last loss was to Xavier coach Richard Pitino 11 days ago, so shout-out to John Stalica for noting that this could be the 1st time a team has ever had consecutive losses to a father/son combo! The last time that Cooley and St. John’s wing Bryce Hopkins were together on the same court was in the Big East…when Cooley was Hopkins’ coach at Providence back in 2023:

Let’s tip-off the final college basketball game in the country for 2025:

The Red Storm came out firing from long range as Oziyah Sellers (left)/Ian Jackson (right) each made a trio of trifectas during the 1st half:

However, the Hoyas matched them shot for shot as Isaiah Abraham (left)/Malik Mack (right) each made 2 of their own to keep the game from getting out of control:

Their teammate KJ Lewis displayed his entire arsenal with a fadeaway jumper in the lane, a pull-up jump shot, and a STL/ferocious dunk to help Georgetown build a 7-PT lead with 7 minutes to play in the opening stanza:

St. John’s F Zuby Ejiofor was certainly a focal point of Georgetown’s defensive game plans, but with Vince Iwuchukwu still out after a “scheduled medical procedure” and Julius Halaifonua picking up 3 fouls in his 1st 4 minutes of action, there were simply no big bodies left to match up with him. Ejiofor capitalized with a series of layups/putbacks and even a rare 3 as the Red Storm went into the locker room with a 52-47 halftime lead:

The Hoyas kept fighting in the 2nd half with Mack making threes and Lewis knocking down jumper after jumper, but it would not be enough. Even the bench players on St. John’s like Joson Sanon (left)/Dylan Darling (right) were draining threes as their team made a marvelous 15-27 from behind the arc (2 shy of the school record for most 3PM in a game):

Ejiofor kept dominating with an and-1, a dunk, and a REB/tip-in, finishing with 25 PTS/10 REB/7 AST to lead his team to a 95-83 victory.

In the postgame press conference, I was hoping to ask Coach Pitino about his family’s double-dip over the Hoyas in December…but there were too many other people asking him questions. On the plus side, he was in a MUCH better mood than during his press conference in November after his team’s 1-PT loss to Iowa State at the Players Era Festival and even shared an R-rated story about Antoine Walker (is there any other kind?!):

I asked Coach Cooley about the relationship he has with his former player Hopkins. He said that he is always a fan of guys who played for him and is glad that Hopkins is healthy and playing with a smile on his face. He was hoping that Hopkins would go 1-55 from the field tonight but was still happy to see him out there after overcoming a very tough injury:

That is a wrap for now (as well as for 2025), but check back next week when Seton Hall visits DC!

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Thursday, Jan 1st

NEWS AND NOTES:

-Duke got a battle from Georgia Tech, but held on to win 85-79. The Blue Devils didn’t get control of the game until the final few minutes. I guess they started celebrating New Years Eve a little early. The Yellow Jackets actually led for most of the first half, but nobody saw this on the ACC Network because…

-Virginia and Virginia Tech battled it out in triple overtime with VA Tech finally getting the 95-85 win at home. It snapped a six game winning streak for UVA and gave VA Tech one of their bigger wins of the year both on and off paper.

-There were a couple of exciting games in the A10 as VCU held on to beat Saint Bonaventure 89-82 in a game that was close all throughout, and George Mason avoided a disastrous upset at La Salle and held on to win 80-75.

-NC State beating Wake Forest at home wasn’t in itself noteworthy, but Will Wade used a lot of colorful metaphors for the media in his postgame presser. A couple of weeks ago, he was throwing his team to the wolves (no pun intended) for not being a tough enough team. Yesterday, he threw the media to the wolves after some less than positive comments about Darrion Williams.

-Clemson picked up a big road win at Syracuse 64-61 in a game that had a pivotal feel to it for both teams. It was particularly big for Clemson because it was their first true road win of the season.

-Going into yesterday, I didn’t even highlight the Rhode Island-Loyola Chicago given that a)neither team was close to postseason aspirations and b)over 200 spots in the NET separated the teams. The Ramblers ended up winning at Rhody and suddenly look like a very dangerous trap game on Saturday when Dayton travels to Chicago to face Loyola.

-UConn wasted no time and jumped out to a 33-8 lead at the Cintas Center to land an early knockout punch at Xavier. By my Puppet math, the Musketeers have been outscored by 66 points in their first 61 minutes of Big East play at home.

-Villanova was in danger of losing at home to DePaul for the first time in Big East play, yet made a late comeback to survive with a 71-66 win.

-Saint John’s went on the road and knocked off Georgetown 93-85, which gave them a conference road win that they kind of needed. The Hoyas have the dubious distinction of losing to a father-son head coaching duo in back-to-back league contests.

NOTABLE GAMES:

-Bradley @ Belmont (Missouri Valley) – Belmont is looking to bounce back from their conference opening loss to Indiana State and should be able to hold serve at home

Milwaukee @ Wright State (Horizon) – Wright State suddenly looks like might be a noisemaker in the league after throttling Oakland at home in their last game. Milwaukee is currently at the top of the Horizon and cannot be overlooking the Raiders on the road.

-Indiana State @ Northern Iowa (Missouri Valley) – Indiana State had a big win over Belmont in their last game, but going on the road against a very good Northern Iowa team is another tall order

-Hawaii @ UC Riverside (Big West) – Hawaii’s schedule has been light so far. In fact if they were to win this game it would arguably be their most impressive win of the season up to this point, so we should learn something about them today.

-Northern Colorado @ Montana State (Big Sky) – Northern Colorado is coming off a big win against Colorado. They need to get their feet back on the ground because they’ve got a tough road game tonight

-UC San Diego @ Cal Poly (Big West) – UCSD is trying to pick up their fourth true road win of the season and stay perfect in league play

Under the Radar – Week 9

This week’s featured conference is the Horizon League, which saw a surprise yesterday as Morehead Wright State beat Oakland rather handily. Northern Kentucky is also showing signs of life, Green Bay is improving, Robert Morris looked strong out of conference but has also suffered and early loss, and we appear to have a lot more parity in this league than what we expected. (Note from Stalica – Wrong, Morehead had a big win against….Alice Lloyd?)

From there we run through the other 21 UTR leagues and talk about how strong the Missouri Valley is with five teams who appear to be possible formidable opponents in the Round of 64. Both McNeese and Yale suffered blowout losses, but we still think they are among the best UTR teams. We discuss all that, and more. And, as we do very week, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…
