Successful from the start: HoopsHD interviews former Western Kentucky coach Matt Kilcullen

A coach’s success when joining a new school can be the result of many different factors: bringing in a great staff, inheriting a talented roster, being a great coach, having a lot of luck, etc. Coach Ralph Willard won 20 games at Western Kentucky in 1994 and led his team to the NCAA tourney before leaving to become the new head coach at Pitt. The Hilltoppers hired Coach Matt Kilcullen away from Jacksonville, where he went 34-50 during his 3-year tenure, but it worked out very well for everyone during year #1. Kilcullen won 27 games that year, had an OT win over Michigan in the NCAA tourney, and came very close to making the Sweet 16 before a 5-PT loss to Kansas. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Coach Kilcullen about being named conference COY and winning a game in the NCAA tourney. Today marks the 26th anniversary of the Hilltoppers winning the Sun Belt tourney title on March 5, 1995.

You were an assistant coach at Notre Dame in the late 1980s under Digger Phelps: what was the most important thing you ever learned from him? He taught me how to be organized in all phases of coaching, which is the biggest thing I took from him.

What are your memories of the 1987 NCAA tourney (David Rivers scored 24 PTS and made a FT with 4 seconds left in a 1-PT win over TCU after a controversial foul call against future Horned Frog coach Jamie Dixon)? I remember the big jump shot Scott Hicks made right in front of our bench to put us ahead: when he hit that shot we just knew that we were going to win. It was a very hard fought contest: in regard to the foul on Coach Dixon, it was the way the calls were going all game long.

You became head coach at Western Kentucky in 1994 and went 27-4 in your very 1st year: how were you able to come in and be so successful so quickly? Coach Ralph Willard left the program with 7 seniors who were used to winning so we just kept the same system and made some minor adjustments.

You were named conference COY that year after winning the award the previous season at Jacksonville: what did it mean to you to win such outstanding honors? We had good players on both teams who played great together and were responsible for that: I am very grateful to them.

What are your memories of the 1995 conference tourney (your team had back-to-back 3-PT wins over Texas-Pan American and Little Rock to win the title)? I remember both of our opponents missing shots on the last possession of each game that could have meant losses for us. Both of those teams played us well so we were fortunate to win both games.

Take me through the 1995 NCAA tourney:
Michael Fraliex made an off-balance 3-PT shot with 9.1 seconds left in regulation en route to a 6-PT OT win over Michigan: where does Fraliex’s shot rank among the most clutch that you have ever seen, and how did it feel to beat the last of the Wolverines’ “Fab 5”? We were down by 14 PTS with about 11 minutes left but always felt that we could win because of our depth and full court pressure. I was on Mike all game long to make a shot and as he had all yearlong he made the shot when it counted: he was a heck of a shooter. We took over in OT as we had fresher legs.

The Jayhawks made 22-25 FT in the 2nd half of a 5-PT win by Kansas: do you think that the refs called it fairly, and what was it like to coach against Roy Williams in March? I thought that we shot horribly…but there was a block/charge call with 1 minute left that was called a block but should have been a charge on Jacque Vaughn. That call was horrible: if it was called a charge then it would have given us a chance, but it did not happen. I looked at Roy and he just shrugged his shoulders! Roy is one of the classiest acts in college basketball and it was an honor to coach against him. By the way, that call was included in the official’s review seminar the next season as a play that should have been called a charge.

In 1999 you became head coach at North Florida: why did you decided to take the job, and did you think at the time that you end up staying there for an entire decade? I took the job because we still had a house in Jacksonville from when I coached at JU from 1991-1994. The Jacksonville area is great to live in and we thought that we could help the program be successful: I was only the 3rd basketball coach in school history but did think I would stay because we loved living there.

In 2005 the Ospreys made the leap to D-1: what is the biggest difference between D-2 and D-1? The competitiveness in recruiting and the fact that all kids think they can play D-1 and will make D-2 schools wait for them to decide.

In 2009 you retired from coaching and became an administrator at several schools: how does being an administrator compare to being a coach? I felt it was time to do something else even though it was tough for the 1st 6 months to be away from the game that I was a part of for most of my life. Administration is a good fit for me because I like all sports and can help them all through fundraising instead of just coaching 1 team. My goal was to eventually become an AD and you have to be able to raise money to do that.

When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most? That I worked hard at every place I was at and helped young people become successful both on and off the court.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Friday, March 5 (and other News, Notes, and Games)

CLICK HERE for the CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK VIDEO NOTEBOOK: DAY 7

Utah Valley at Grand Canyon, 9:00 PM Eastern, FOX10-Arizona/espn3

The WAC regular season championship will be decided over the next two nights, and for only the second time in the last 7 seasons, that crown will not be going to New Mexico State.  Instead, either Grand Canyon or Utah Valley will claim a first ever title if either team can sweep the games tonight and tomorrow.  If the two teams split, the conference tiebreakers will kick in and the results of other WAC games will be factored in decide the top seed for next week’s WAC Tournament.  No matter what the outcome, one of these two schools will win the WAC title for the first time in school history, and will be looking to follow that up with their first ever NCAA Tournament bid.

Utah Valley enters tonight’s game at 10-9 overall and 8-4 in WAC play.  The Wolverines have four players averaging double figures in scoring led by Jamison Overton’s 16.7 points per game.  However, the team’s star is clearly Fardaws Aimaq, who is averaging an impressive 14.8 points and 15.4 rebounds per game, making him the nation’s leading rebounder by almost 3 rebounds per game over Jackson State’s Jayveous McKinnis.  Grand Canyon is 14-5 overall and 8-2 in WAC play.  Asbjorn Midtgaard averaged a double-double as well, with 14.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per games,  Watching Aimaq and Midtgaard match-up tonight and tomorrow will certainly be worthwhile . . . and they just may face-off one more time next weekend in the WAC title game!

-Kansas was behind by 15 late in the second half to UTEP, but came storming back late to get the 67-62 win in what amounted to be nothing more than a buy game.  It was more of a bullet dodged than it was a key win.

OTHER NEWS, NOTES, AND GAMES

-Michigan bounced back form their loss to Illinois with a 69-50 blowout win over Michigan State.  The Wolverines are back in the driver’s seat for a #1 seed.

-Baylor picked up another impressive win as they held off Oklahoma State.  They seem to be pretty close to locking up a #1 seed themselves.

-OLD DOMINION AT WESTERN KENTUCKY (Conference USA).  WKU is squarely on the bubble and there is a good chance the selection committee will take them if they can win out and avoid an early loss in CUSA Tourney, but anything short of that and they’ll need the auto-bid.

-GEORGIA TECH AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  We now have Georgia Tech in our field.  They certainly appear to be going in the right direction and have the chance to add another road win to their resume tonight.

-COLORADO STATE AT NEVADA (Mountain West).  Colorado State is squarely on the bubble and this is a tough road test for them.  If they win this one and win the next game then chances are they’ll make it into the field.

Mr. Smith goes to Auburn: HoopsHD interviews McDonald’s All-American Jabari Smith Jr.

If you want to win an NCAA title you need a good coach, a great resume…and a McDonald’s All-American. Only 1 championship team since 1979 has not featured such a player (Maryland in 2002). The McDonald’s All-American Game did not take place last spring and will not be taking place this spring due to COVID, sadly. However, the rosters were announced on February 23rd after selecting the 24 best players in the nation from a list of several hundred nominees. If you do not think these guys can make an immediate impact in the fall, just ask Coach Mark Few how he likes having 2020 honoree Jalen Suggs at Gonzaga! Michigan seems to be the big winner so far as Coach Juwan Howard will be having a trio of 2021 honorees join him in Ann Arbor this fall. Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Jabari Smith Jr. about winning a gold medal and being named a McDonald’s All-American.

You won a gold medal with team USA at the 2019 FIBA U-16 Americas Championship in Brazil: what did it mean to you to represent your country, and what did it mean to you to win a gold medal? It meant the world to me and was a great experience that I never forget.

What has been the hardest part of being a high school basketball player during a pandemic? Not being able to play as many AAU games: it was a huge issue and it will be the last time that I ever have a chance to play AAU. Gym access was also tough for some people.

You received offers from several great schools including Georgia/LSU/North Carolina/Tennessee but committed to Auburn last October: what was the biggest factor in your decision? Their family atmosphere created by both the players and the coaching staff. I also like their playing style and the fact that is is close to home.

The Tigers are 12-14 this season: do you feel any pressure to help them improve next year since you are the highest-rated recruit in school history, or do you think they are already set for 2022 because they do not have a single senior on the current roster? I do not necessarily feel pressure but am excited to get there and just help as much as I can by being ready to go as soon as I step onto campus so that I can make an immediate impact.

Auburn’s other big recruit for next year is Trey Alexander: how well do you know him, and what makes him such a good player? I know him a little bit: we were at the Pangos All-American Camp together and became friends. He can really shoot and has a great feel for the game. The underrated part of his game is that he plays good defense and is a real team player.

You plan to major in Communications with a minor in Business: why did you pick those subjects? I love talking to people and having my voice out there. I want to major in something that can keep me around the game for a long time because basketball is my calling.

Your Sandy Creek High School team went 14-0 in region play this year: how were you able to stay focused for every single game on your schedule? Our coach always taught us to play inspired no matter who the competition is. With COVID around the season could end at any time so we played hard during every game and did not take anything for granted.

Last week you were named a McDonald’s All-American: what did it mean to you to receive such an outstanding honor? It is something that you work for throughout your entire life, but did not hit me until later because it is unreal. I just thank God for it because it is so cool.

You are 6’10”: what position do you play now, and what position will you feel most comfortable at in college? I played the 3 and 4 even though I am the tallest person on my team. In college I think I might get to play at any of the frontcourt positions. I do not want to limit myself by only playing 1 position and will play wherever my coach needs me to.

Your father Jabari Sr. played in the NBA and overseas and your cousin Kwame Brown was the 1st overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft: who is the best athlete in the family? I am a really competitive person so I would say me!

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day between Canisius and Siena – CLICK HERE

-Villanova jumped out big against Creighton and despite a late run by the Bluejays held on for a really impressive 72-60 win.

-Syracuse is starting to play better.  They’ve still got some work to do to land inside the bubble, but the opportunities they need are there and they’re starting to look good enough to take advantage of them.  They knocked off a pretty good Clemson team last night 74-64

-UConn won a bubblicious game against Seton Hall, which was a great win for the Huskies and a damaging loss for The Hall.

-Missouri got a really nice win against Florida to pull them out of a bit of a slump.  This should help give them a nice nudge up the seedlist.

-Oregon is looking better now than they have all season, and picked up another really nice win against UCLA last night.  If they finish strong it wouldn’t shock me at all if the Ducks ended up in the top half of the bracket.

-Maryland, who had been red hot, fell at Northwestern in a bit of a shocker.  Maryland has a lot of good things on their resume so this loss won’t sink them, but it doesn’t exactly help either.

-Stanford needed a big win, and last night they had a big opportunity to get one at USC.  They came up just 37 points short.  USC rolled them 79-42 and played one of their better games of the year.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-MICHIGAN STATE AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  It’s a rivalry game.  Michigan State is squarely on the bubble, and Michigan looks like they’ll end up as a #1 seed.  Sparty  Michigan is coming off a rather decisive loss to Illinois, so a win against their rivals would be a nice way to bounce back.  EDITED BY CHAD.  #StupidPuppet

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT BAYLOR (Big 12).  Oklahoma State is coming off very impressive back to back wins against Oklahoma, and Baylor is coming off an incredible win at West Virginia.  Baylor is looking like a #1 seed, and Oklahoma State is looking like they could end up as a protected seed.  This one should be fun!

-TCU AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big 12).  Most Big 12 games have been great this year.  This is one that likely will not be.  WVU should roll and continue to be in the range for a #2 seed.

-IOWA STATE AT TEXAS TECH (Big 12).  Most Big 12 games have been great this year.  This is another one that likely will not be.  Texas Tech should roll.

-NEBRASKA AT IOWA (Big Ten).  Most Big Ten games have been great.  This is one that likely will not be.  Iowa should roll.  Although, Nebraska did blow out Rutgers in their last game, so they should have some confidence coming in.

-TEXAS AT OKLAHOMA (Big 12).  Oklahoma is coming off back to back losses to Oklahoma State, but they’re still in good shape and still a likely protected seed.  Texas is looking to pick up another road win and take a step closer to cementing down a protected seed for themselves.  Oh yeah, this is also a rivalry game!

-ARIZONA STATE AT COLORADO (Pac 12).  Colorado has been hot and cold this year, but mostly hot and they’re hot right now.  They have cracked the rankings and should be able to coast into the top half of the bracket if they hold serve the rest of the way.

-WYOMING AT UTAH STATE (Mountain West).  Utah State is right on the bubble.  They need to avoid bad losses (like this one) and have a strong showing in the MWC Tournament if they want a shot at making the field.

-UTEP AT KANSAS.  Buy game
