Mr. Smith goes to Auburn: HoopsHD interviews McDonald’s All-American Jabari Smith Jr.

If you want to win an NCAA title you need a good coach, a great resume…and a McDonald’s All-American. Only 1 championship team since 1979 has not featured such a player (Maryland in 2002). The McDonald’s All-American Game did not take place last spring and will not be taking place this spring due to COVID, sadly. However, the rosters were announced on February 23rd after selecting the 24 best players in the nation from a list of several hundred nominees. If you do not think these guys can make an immediate impact in the fall, just ask Coach Mark Few how he likes having 2020 honoree Jalen Suggs at Gonzaga! Michigan seems to be the big winner so far as Coach Juwan Howard will be having a trio of 2021 honorees join him in Ann Arbor this fall. Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Jabari Smith Jr. about winning a gold medal and being named a McDonald’s All-American.

You won a gold medal with team USA at the 2019 FIBA U-16 Americas Championship in Brazil: what did it mean to you to represent your country, and what did it mean to you to win a gold medal? It meant the world to me and was a great experience that I never forget.

What has been the hardest part of being a high school basketball player during a pandemic? Not being able to play as many AAU games: it was a huge issue and it will be the last time that I ever have a chance to play AAU. Gym access was also tough for some people.

You received offers from several great schools including Georgia/LSU/North Carolina/Tennessee but committed to Auburn last October: what was the biggest factor in your decision? Their family atmosphere created by both the players and the coaching staff. I also like their playing style and the fact that is is close to home.

The Tigers are 12-14 this season: do you feel any pressure to help them improve next year since you are the highest-rated recruit in school history, or do you think they are already set for 2022 because they do not have a single senior on the current roster? I do not necessarily feel pressure but am excited to get there and just help as much as I can by being ready to go as soon as I step onto campus so that I can make an immediate impact.

Auburn’s other big recruit for next year is Trey Alexander: how well do you know him, and what makes him such a good player? I know him a little bit: we were at the Pangos All-American Camp together and became friends. He can really shoot and has a great feel for the game. The underrated part of his game is that he plays good defense and is a real team player.

You plan to major in Communications with a minor in Business: why did you pick those subjects? I love talking to people and having my voice out there. I want to major in something that can keep me around the game for a long time because basketball is my calling.

Your Sandy Creek High School team went 14-0 in region play this year: how were you able to stay focused for every single game on your schedule? Our coach always taught us to play inspired no matter who the competition is. With COVID around the season could end at any time so we played hard during every game and did not take anything for granted.

Last week you were named a McDonald’s All-American: what did it mean to you to receive such an outstanding honor? It is something that you work for throughout your entire life, but did not hit me until later because it is unreal. I just thank God for it because it is so cool.

You are 6’10”: what position do you play now, and what position will you feel most comfortable at in college? I played the 3 and 4 even though I am the tallest person on my team. In college I think I might get to play at any of the frontcourt positions. I do not want to limit myself by only playing 1 position and will play wherever my coach needs me to.

Your father Jabari Sr. played in the NBA and overseas and your cousin Kwame Brown was the 1st overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft: who is the best athlete in the family? I am a really competitive person so I would say me!

-Villanova jumped out big against Creighton and despite a late run by the Bluejays held on for a really impressive 72-60 win.

-Syracuse is starting to play better.  They’ve still got some work to do to land inside the bubble, but the opportunities they need are there and they’re starting to look good enough to take advantage of them.  They knocked off a pretty good Clemson team last night 74-64

-UConn won a bubblicious game against Seton Hall, which was a great win for the Huskies and a damaging loss for The Hall.

-Missouri got a really nice win against Florida to pull them out of a bit of a slump.  This should help give them a nice nudge up the seedlist.

-Oregon is looking better now than they have all season, and picked up another really nice win against UCLA last night.  If they finish strong it wouldn’t shock me at all if the Ducks ended up in the top half of the bracket.

-Maryland, who had been red hot, fell at Northwestern in a bit of a shocker.  Maryland has a lot of good things on their resume so this loss won’t sink them, but it doesn’t exactly help either.

-Stanford needed a big win, and last night they had a big opportunity to get one at USC.  They came up just 37 points short.  USC rolled them 79-42 and played one of their better games of the year.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-MICHIGAN STATE AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  It’s a rivalry game.  Michigan State is squarely on the bubble, and Michigan looks like they’ll end up as a #1 seed.  Sparty  Michigan is coming off a rather decisive loss to Illinois, so a win against their rivals would be a nice way to bounce back.  EDITED BY CHAD.  #StupidPuppet

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT BAYLOR (Big 12).  Oklahoma State is coming off very impressive back to back wins against Oklahoma, and Baylor is coming off an incredible win at West Virginia.  Baylor is looking like a #1 seed, and Oklahoma State is looking like they could end up as a protected seed.  This one should be fun!

-TCU AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big 12).  Most Big 12 games have been great this year.  This is one that likely will not be.  WVU should roll and continue to be in the range for a #2 seed.

-IOWA STATE AT TEXAS TECH (Big 12).  Most Big 12 games have been great this year.  This is another one that likely will not be.  Texas Tech should roll.

-NEBRASKA AT IOWA (Big Ten).  Most Big Ten games have been great.  This is one that likely will not be.  Iowa should roll.  Although, Nebraska did blow out Rutgers in their last game, so they should have some confidence coming in.

-TEXAS AT OKLAHOMA (Big 12).  Oklahoma is coming off back to back losses to Oklahoma State, but they’re still in good shape and still a likely protected seed.  Texas is looking to pick up another road win and take a step closer to cementing down a protected seed for themselves.  Oh yeah, this is also a rivalry game!

-ARIZONA STATE AT COLORADO (Pac 12).  Colorado has been hot and cold this year, but mostly hot and they’re hot right now.  They have cracked the rankings and should be able to coast into the top half of the bracket if they hold serve the rest of the way.

-WYOMING AT UTAH STATE (Mountain West).  Utah State is right on the bubble.  They need to avoid bad losses (like this one) and have a strong showing in the MWC Tournament if they want a shot at making the field.

-UTEP AT KANSAS.  Buy game

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Thursday, March 4

Canisius at Siena, 7:00 PM Eastern, MYTV4-Albany/espn3

The Siena Saints will be concluding their regular season, and taking their shot at the Metro Atlantic regular season championship, with a pair of home games tonight and tomorrow night against the Canisius Golden Griffins.  The first of these two games is tonight’s Under the Radar Game of the Day.  Siena enters the game at 11-3 overall and in MAAC play.  They have won three in a row since a February 20 loss at Niagara.  Manny Camper is the key player for the Saints, as he is averaging a double-double (14.2 points and 10.2 rebounds) long with 4.1 assists per game.

Canisius is currently 6-4 overall and in MAAC play, meaning that they are just barely going to reach the minimum 12 games against D1 play before the MAAC Tournament necessary to be eligible for the NCAA Tournament.  The Grifs have applied to the NCAA for a waiver in case these games do not happen, but as of the time of posting this article, it appears to be good to go.  Malek Green has led the way so far for Canisius with an average of 12.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.  He and his teammates will have to play one of their best games so far if they want to pick up the huge road win in Albany and try to keep Siena from a shot at the regular season championship,

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day between Abilene Christian and Stephen F Austin – CLICK HERE

-Yesterday was just a crazy, nutty, and awesome day!  We had four of the craziest quarterfinal games you will ever see in the Horizon League, which you can hear all about by CLICKING HERE and going to our CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK VIDEO NOTEBOOK.  We also had two games that had huge #1 seed implications, and a slew of other games that involved bubble teams.

-Baylor bounced back from their loss at Kansas with what was perhaps their most impressive win of the year, and one of biggest single wins of the year that anyone has managed on paper.  They went into West Virginia and got it done in overtime.  They were behind for a lot of the game, but it was close all throughout.  Both teams made big plays down the stretch, but is who pulled it out.  It was just the latest in a long string of incredible games in the Big 12.

-I say Baylor picked up ONE of the most impressive single game wins on paper.  Well, a few hours later Illinois topped them with a blowout win at Michigan.  It was stupefying!  Michigan had just one loss on the season, and was coming off a couple of hugely impressive wins.  Illinois just totally dump-trucked them.  The final score was 76-53, but at times the margin was even more than that.

-Wisconsin really battled at Purdue and came close to picking up what would have probably been their most impressive win of the season, but the Boilers held on 73-69.  Purdue is starting to make a case that they deserve a protected seed.

-Boise State had what seemed to be the equivalent of a buy game last night as they hosted Fresno State at home, but they ended up losing.  This is not good!  I don’t think it knocks them out of the fight, but it certainly knocks them down onto the canvas.  They need a strong finish to stay inside the bubble.

-Xavier appeared to be squarely on the bubble and needed a road win at Georgetown, but trailed the whole game.  They actually made a comeback late after falling behind big, but couldn’t get over the hump.  This is a damaging loss for a team that couldn’t afford to be damaged.

-Michigan State beat Indiana in a fugly game, but an ugly win (and even a fugly win) is better than a pretty loss.  Michigan State looks to be on the right side of the bubble.  For now.

-Georgia Tech needed overtime, but got a big win against Duke.  We had GA Tech just in and Duke just out, so this should nudge the Jackets a little further inside the bubble.  They are by no means a lock, but a strong finish should get them there!

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-CLEMSON AT SYRACUSE (ACC).  Clemson’s profile is solid and they appear to be on cruise control for the top half of the bracket, but I think they can improve their resume simply by adding road wins to it, and they have a winnable road game today.  Syracuse looks to be within reach of the bubble, but still definitively outside of it.  They need a strong finish to the season and some big wins in the ACC Tournament in order to feel safe.

-WICHITA STATE AT TULANE (American).  I think Wichita State has a solid path to the field and will get there so long as they hold serve the rest of the day, which means not losing games like this one.

-UCONN AT SETON HALL (Big East).  This is a bubblicious game with UConn appearing to be just inside the bubble and Seton Hall appearing to be just out.  This is hugely important for both teams.  Both really need this win.

-MISSOURI AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Both teams are very safely inside the bubble and both are likely to land in the top half of the bracket.  This game is simply a resume building opportunity for both of them.

-PROVIDENCE AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East).  Saint John’s appears to be hovering around the outside the bubble.  They have a path to making the field, but need a really strong finish to the season.

-MINNESOTA AT PENN STATE (Big Ten).  If Minnesota has any hopes at all of making the tournament, they need wins away from home, which means winning today and winning some games in the Big Ten Tourney.

-NEW MEXICO AT COLORADO STATE (Mountain West).  Colorado State can make the field if they finish strong.  It also goes without saying that they need to avoid losses to non-tournament teams.

-CREIGHTON AT VILLANOVA (Big East).  Nova looks to have a protected seed pretty much locked up, but they have been slipping a bit.  Creighton has had a solid year and can actually play their way into a protected seed if they’re able to pick up a few wins in games like this.

-BOSTON COLLEGE AT FLORIDA STATE (ACC).  Florida State is coming off a somewhat surprising loss, but they’re still in great shape and still in a position to lock up a protected seed and win the conference.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT UNLV (Mountain West).  San Diego State has really been playing well lately and should skate into the NCAA Tournament so long as they hold serve the rest of the way.  They could even end up in on the first ballot and/or in the top half of the bracket.

-STANFORD AT USC (Pac 12).  USC is still in good shape, but their resume has taken on some damage in the last week or so and they could use a win to get things turned back around.  Stanford is on life support and needs a big win in a game like this just to help push them inside the bubble.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Wednesday, March 3

Abilene Christian at Stephen F Austin, 9:00 PM Eastern, espn+

For the final time as members of the Southland conference (with both of these schools slated to move to the WAC next season), Abilene Christian is travelling to Stephen F Austin tonight with the Wildcats looking for their first eve way in Nacogdoches and their first ever season sweep of the Lumberjacks.  The game also will have huge ramifications on the battle for the top two seeds in the Southland tournament (those two teams getting a bye to the semifinals) and the quest for the regular season championship.

Abilene Christian enters play tonight at 11-2 in SLC play and 19-4 overall.  They are part of a four-way tie in the loss column atop the Southland standings with SFA, Sam Houston State and Nicholls State, though first place could have been theirs outright but for an upset loss last time out at Central Arkansas.  Kolton Kohl, Joe Pleasant and Coryon Mason are all averaging double figures in scoring for the Wildcats.  Kohl led the way with 20 points in ACU’s 82-62 win over SFA back on January 27.

Stephen F Austin currently sits at 12-2 in Southland play and 15-4 overall.  The Lumberjacks, who are ineligible for the Southland and NCAA tournaments due to an APR ban, could also have been in first place on their own but for an upset loss over this past weekend at Lamar, though they did bounce back Monday night to win at Central Arkansas.  Gavin Kensmil leads the way for SFA averaging team highs in points (15.7) and rebounds (7.3) per game.  Cameron Johnson, Roti Ware and David Kachelries are all double-digit scorers as well.  Johnson had the best game for the Lumberjacks when these two teams last met, scoring 13 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.  He and his teammates will need to be even better tonight if they want to claim at least a share of the Southland regular season title in their final year in the conference.
