The Undefeated: HoopsHD interviews Charleston legend Anthony Johnson

It is hard to go undefeated in conference play but several teams have a shot this year: Belmont will try to finish 20-0 in OVC play this weekend, and Baylor/Gonzaga have yet to lose a game at all. Charleston will finish their abbreviated CAA regular season with a winning record but you have to travel all the way back to the 1990s to find the only 2 undefeated seasons in school history. The Cougars went 16-0 in 1999 in the SoCon due to a balanced lineup featuring 4 guys scoring 10-14 PPG, but the 1st time they went 16-0 was in the Trans America Athletic Conference in 1997 thanks to a 2-man senior wrecking crew of Thaddeous Delaney (15.8 PPG/9.5 RPG) and Anthony Johnson (13.9 PPG/7.2 APG). That summer Anthony became the 1st player in school history to be selected in the NBA Draft, and a few years later he became the 1st D-League player to participate in the NBA Finals. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Anthony about going undefeated and getting the only NCAA tourney win in school history.  Today marks the 24th anniversary of Charleston’s 94-73 win over Centenary(!) to wrap up its magical regular season on February 22, 1997.

In high school you were an all-conference QB on a state runner-up football team and an honorable mention all-conference shortstop on a state semifinal baseball team: which sport did you enjoy the most, and how did you end up choosing basketball at Charleston? Basketball was #1 but football was a close 2nd. I enjoyed the physicality of the sport: the QB is the most important person on the field so I liked having a big impact on the outcome of the game.

From 1994-1997 you won 4 straight conference tourneys and in 1997 you were part of the 1st team to ever go 16-0 in TAAC play: how was your team able to dominate throughout your college career? A big part of it was our head coach John Kresse and a great staff including assistant Gregg Marshall. Probably 75% of us redshirted, which gave us an extra year to develop: it really benefited us by the time we were seniors. I tore my ACL and head to redshirt.

Take me through the 1996 NIT:
You scored 11 PTS in a 6-PT win over Tennessee: what did you learn from the 1995 NIT that allowed you to succeed in 1996? Even when you are not playing in the Big Dance you get the opportunity in the NIT to travel to play big schools in their home arenas. I made some big buckets down the stretch in Knoxville to help us win a close 1.

You had 8 AST while playing all 45 minutes in a 4-PT OT loss to Rhode Island: how on earth were the Rams able to send it into OT after not scoring a field goal during the final 14 minutes of regulation? They were up 22 PTS on us! We shut them out for that 14-minute stretch and were able to tie it up before they pulled away in overtime. We clawed back into it before falling short.

In 1997 you were named conference POY/All-American: what did it mean to you to win such outstanding honors? It was an honor not just for myself but also for my family/teammates. We worked hard to have a great year: I got some accolades but it was a team effort. I wanted to be the best player on the floor night in and night out and my coaches put me in a position to accomplish that.

Take me through the 1997 NCAA tourney:
You scored 17 PTS and had a tourney school-record 9 AST in a 9-PT win over Maryland (which remains the only tourney win in school history): how much of a factor was the decision by Terps coach Gary Williams to have Laron Profit/Terrell Stokes sit out the 1st 6 minutes after they showed up late to a team meeting? It helped us settle in a little quicker because their backup guards were not athletic enough to deal with us. We jumped on them, gained some confidence early, and rolled on through.

You scored 14 PTS in a 4-PT loss to Arizona to end the team’s 23-game winning streak: how close did you come to beating the eventual champs? We were up 10 PTS with about 10 minutes left and were playing very good ball. They had great guards in Mike Bibby/Jason Terry/Miles Simon who got them going. Bibby hit a couple of threes and Terry had 1 as well: they erased our lead over the span of 4-5 possessions. We were probably the better team that night but give them credit for winning the title.

You finished your career with a school-record 520 career AST: what made you such a great PG, and do you think that anyone will ever break your record? The key is to just know your guys: where they wanted the ball, how they wanted to receive passes, etc. My record came from the system we were in but I wanted to get every single AST on the floor. I was a willing passer and wanted to put my guys in a position to be successful. I am pretty sure that someone will take it down eventually but I hope it stands a little while longer.

In the summer of 1997 you became the 1st player in Charleston history selected in the NBA Draft when you were picked in the 2nd round by Sacramento (3 spots ahead of Stephen Jackson): were you thrilled to get drafted, or disappointed that you did not get selected earlier, or other? It meant the world to me because not many achieve that accomplishment. I shared that with everyone who helped me get there. I felt that I was a 1st-round talent but there were some solid PGs taken ahead of me like Antonio Daniels/Chauncey Billups: that is some pretty elite company. I ended up having a nice long career.

In the series-clinching Game 6 of the 1st round of the 2006 playoffs you scored a career-high 40 PTS/16-23 FG for Indiana in a 6-PT loss to New Jersey: was it just 1 of those scenarios where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were “in the zone”, and did you really tell Jason Kidd after Game 5 that you were going to go for 40?! I was in the zone: I am not a really religious person but that night I heard a voice from the big man upstairs to just shoot it. It was a crazy night to make shots from anywhere I shot it from. It was not quite worded like that…but I probably told him that I was going to have a big night.

In 2002 you became the 1st D-League player to participate in the NBA Finals (with Orlando): what was the secret to your successful journey? I played in the D-League in 2001 and made the Finals in 2002. I had not been playing up to my potential so I went to the D-League to get my confidence back. We made it to the Finals 2 years in a row, which was quite a feat.

Since retiring you have hosted basketball camps and helped coach your son’s AAU team: how do you like coaching, and what do you hope to do in the future? I enjoy coaching a lot. I have played ball since age 5 so I have 40+ years of experience and love to share it with young kids. I hope to coach in the pros in the future but am happy to coach AAU for now.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day between Grambling and Jackson State – CLICK HERE

-The showcase game of the day between Michigan and Ohio State did not disappoint!!  It didn’t come down to the final seconds, but for the first 38 minutes of the game or so, it seesawed back and forth with both teams making big plays.  It was just a fantastic game to watch!  Michigan got the win on the road, and is by all accounts the definitive #3 on everyone’s seedlist, but Ohio State showed that they are capable of being just as good.  I still think they belong on the #1 line, and it wouldn’t shock me at all if we see these two face off again in the B1G Tournament.

-Maryland picked up another big win at Rutgers, and should be putting to bed any concerns about them not belonging in the NCAA Tournament.

Other than that it was a pretty chalky day with most tournament caliber teams holding serve against non-tournament caliber teams.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-EVANSVILLE AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley).  Drake appears to be cruising toward the NCAA Tournament.  So long as they win out and avoid an early loss in the MVC Tourney I think they’ll be inside the bubble even if they don’t win the automatic bid.

-SYRACUSE AT DUKE (ACC).  Both of these teams still feel like they’re a long way from making the NCAA Tournament, especially Duke, but Duke at least played really well their last time out and is perhaps playing like a tournament caliber team right now.

-TEXAS TECH AT OKLAHOMA STATE (Big 12).  I still really like both of these teams, but both have some room for improvement and could really use this win tonight.  Texas Tech has lost their last two (although neither loss was all that bad), and Oklahoma State could just use a few more big wins at the top of their resume to help them climb the seedlist.

-OREGON AT USC (Pac 12).  Oregon has had an unspectacular year for most of the year, but they are really starting to play well now and can pick up what would arguably be their biggest win of the season so far if they can pull this one off tonight.  USC is coming off a loss, but it’s hardly a damaging loss.  They still look like the best team in the conference and have a chance to end up as a protected seed if they can finish the season strong.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Monday, February 22

Grambling at Jackson State, 5:30 PM Eastern, NBATV

Yesterday, Prairie View A&M remained undefeated in SWAC play picking up a hard-fought road win at Texas Southern to improve to 7-0 in conference.  The Jackson State Tigers will attempt to keep pace this afternoon as they host Grambling in our Under the Radar Game of the Day.  Today’s game (and the women’s game which precedes it at 2:00 PM Eastern) will also be the first ever college basketball games broadcast live on NBATV.

Jackson State is currently 6-0 in SWAC play (6-5 overall) and has not lost a game yet in the 2021 calendar year.  Tristan Jarrett leads the scoring for the Tigers with 19.5 points per game, while teammate Jayveous McKinnis is averaging a double-double with 13 points and 13.1 rebounds per game.  Today’s opponent, Grambling State, is led by Cam Christon’s 12.4 points per game.  Sarion McGee’s 13 points led Grambling back on January 23 when they lost at home to Jackson State 75-61.  In that game, Jarrett scored 24 points and McKinnis had a double-double for Jackson State.  Grambling needs to find a way to slow down both players if they want to pull the upset tonight and knock Jackson State down into second place in the league standings.

NEWS AND NOTES

-So, normally at this time of year we start closely tracking who it is that can lock up first place finishes, which means being able to have home court advantages in conference tournaments, or byes through several rounds of their tourneys, or whatever.  We also start tracking who it is that’s being removed from the SURVIVAL BOARD due to not being able to make their conference tournaments.  Due to COVID protocol and everything being in so much flux, we won’t be moving teams off of the Survival Board or declaring them outright first place finishers until we see the conference tournament bracket.  With so many teams being shut down, there is just too much that can change.

-We do have one conference tournament bracket!!  Check out our CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT INFO PAGE BY CLICKING HERE to follow all of the updates as we head down the stretch.

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day between Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern – CLICK HERE

-Minnesota had been looking like a top 15 team at home this year, but that wasn’t the case yesterday.  Illinois blew them out of the gym with a 94-63 win.  Illinois may not have looked like a #1 seed all season long, but they kinda look like one now.  They are playing as well as Michigan and Ohio State and it wouldn’t shock me at all to see them beat one (or even both) of those teams in the Big Ten Tournament and jump up to the #1 line.

-Virginia had two chances in the final minute to beat Duke, but came up empty both times.  Duke is still a mile from the NCAA Tournament, but they at least played like a tournament caliber team yesterday.

-Alabama had to sweat, but held on to beat Vanderbilt.  At home.  By 4.

-West Virginia came from 19 down to get the win at Texas and pick up another huge win for their resume.  Texas kind of came apart early in the second half and West Virginia just swung the momentum their way.

-Kansas picked up another big win as they knocked off Texas Tech for the second time.  The Jayhawks went through a period where they just looked sucktacular.  That is no longer the case.  They’ve now won five straight and beaten Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in that stretch.

-USC suffered what was just their fourth loss of the year as they fell at home to Arizona 81-72.  While it is a bit of a setback, and it may hurt their chances of getting a protected seed, the Trojans are still in really good shape overall.

-Tennessee had been slumping a little bit, and they really ramped up that slumping yesterday!  Kentucky blew them off the court for a 70-55 win, despite a terrible shooting performance in the second half.  Kentucky probably can’t get in without the auto-bid, but they are starting to show signs of life.

-Indiana couldn’t hold off Michigan State at home.  It’s not a backbreaking loss for the Hoosiers, but it was a winnable game that they could have really used and at just 12-10 on the year they may be getting understandably anxious.

-Louisville lost by 45 to North Carolina yesterday in what was one of the more impressive showings for the Tarheels of the year, and one of the most gawd-awful showings for Louisville for the year.

-Oregon and Colorado both had to sweat out weaker opponents, but both held on to wins that they really needed.

-VCU followed up their big win against Richmond with a damaging loss to George Mason.  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

-Stanford fell in a triple overtime thriller at Washington State in a game that they had multiple chances to win and kind of needed to win.  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

-Seton Hall had what appeared to be a very winnable road game at Georgetown yesterday, but they failed to get it done.  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

-Ole Miss had really been on a roll, and they were hosting rival Mississippi State last night in a game that looked like would be an easy win.  They failed to get it done and lost 66-56.  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

-Saint John’s had been on a roll!  They had won eight of their last nine and picked up several big wins in that stretch!  They went from being left for dead to playing their way onto the bubble!  Yesterday they had what appeared to be an easy game at home against DePaul!  But…THEY LOST!!  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-MICHIGAN AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten).  This is a big rivalry game between two top four teams that could both end up on the #1 line.  It’s not a game that either team really “needs” since they are both pretty much locks to make the NCAA Tournament, but it is a huge showcase game and a big litmus test, and the winner will be very much on track to get a #1 seed.

-CINCINNATI AT HOUSTON (American).  Cincinnati has had a disappointing season overall, but they have won their last four games, and played Wichita State very close before that, so they could make some noise in the AAC between now and the end.  If they pull the upset today against a Houston team that’s looking to bounce back from their loss to Wichita State, they’ll make more than just a little noise.

-MARYLAND AT RUTGERS (Big Ten).  This is a resume building opportunity for two teams who could really benefit from padding their resumes a little bit.  Maryland is looking for their fourth straight win, and Rutgers is looking for a stabilizing win after losing two of their last three.

-EVANSVILLE AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley).  Drake will likely make the field so long as they win all their remaining regular season games, which they are certainly good enough to do.

-PENN STATE AT IOWA (Big Ten).  Iowa has won three straight and is coming off a blowout win at Wisconsin, which was perhaps their most impressive performance of the year.  They can keep that momentum going with a win today.

-WISCONSIN AT NORTHWESTERN (Big Ten).  Wisconsin is in relatively good shape for a bid, but they have lost three of their last four and don’t have anything overly impressive on their resume that would indicate they deserve a protected seed, so holding serve today is important.

-BUTLER AT XAVIER (Big East).  Xavier is sliding down the seedlist and really needs to avoid a loss to a Butler team that’s nowhere close to making the field.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Sunday, February 21

Prairie View A&M at Texas Southern, 5:00 PM Eastern, Texas Southern YouTube

Following Saturday’s games, only six teams remain in the nation that are undefeated in conference play.  Gonzaga, Baylor, Belmont, UTRGV, and a pair of SWAC teams — Jackson State and Prairie View.  With these two undefeated teams not currently scheduled to face each other until the conference tournament, the toughest test that either one will face before then is scheduled for this evening as the Panthers of Prairie View A&M will be in Houston to take on the Texas Southern Tigers.

Prairie View enters today’s game at 7-4 overall and 6-0 in SWAC play.  They are led by Cam Mack who is averaging 14.4 points and 8.5 assists per game.  Jawaun Daniels should also be watched, as he led the Panthers with 21 points and 6 rebounds in Prairie View’s 73-67 win over TSU at home last month.  Texas Southern currently sits at 7-7 overall and 4-2 in SWAC play.  The Tigers are led by Michael Weathers (14 points per game) and John Walker III (12 points per game).  Galen Alexander had 15 points to lead the Tigers in the loss at Prairie View last month.  A win by  the Panthers today will make the SWAC regular season title clearly a two-horse race the rest of the way, while a home win by Texas Southern will keep the Tigers within striking distance and could lead to a ton of intrigue over the final two weeks of play.
