We are only 3 weeks away from Selection Sunday as we continue to make our NCAA tourney predictions. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel correctly picked 67 of the 68 teams that made the 2019 tourney, 63 of which were within 1 spot of their actual seed, including 45 right on the money. He will spend the upcoming weeks predicting which 68 teams will hear their names called on March 14th. See below for his list of who would make the cut if they picked the field today and if you agree or disagree then feel free to tweet us. NEWS AND NOTES

-So, normally at this time of year we start closely tracking who it is that can lock up first place finishes, which means being able to have home court advantages in conference tournaments, or byes through several rounds of their tourneys, or whatever.  We also start tracking who it is that’s being removed from the SURVIVAL BOARD due to not being able to make their conference tournaments.  Due to COVID protocol and everything being in so much flux, we won’t be moving teams off of the Survival Board or declaring them outright first place finishers until we see the conference tournament bracket.  With so many teams being shut down, there is just too much that can change.

-We do have one conference tournament bracket!!  Check out our CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT INFO PAGE BY CLICKING HERE to follow all of the updates as we head down the stretch.

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day between Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern – CLICK HERE

-Minnesota had been looking like a top 15 team at home this year, but that wasn’t the case yesterday.  Illinois blew them out of the gym with a 94-63 win.  Illinois may not have looked like a #1 seed all season long, but they kinda look like one now.  They are playing as well as Michigan and Ohio State and it wouldn’t shock me at all to see them beat one (or even both) of those teams in the Big Ten Tournament and jump up to the #1 line.

-Virginia had two chances in the final minute to beat Duke, but came up empty both times.  Duke is still a mile from the NCAA Tournament, but they at least played like a tournament caliber team yesterday.

-Alabama had to sweat, but held on to beat Vanderbilt.  At home.  By 4.

-West Virginia came from 19 down to get the win at Texas and pick up another huge win for their resume.  Texas kind of came apart early in the second half and West Virginia just swung the momentum their way.

-Kansas picked up another big win as they knocked off Texas Tech for the second time.  The Jayhawks went through a period where they just looked sucktacular.  That is no longer the case.  They’ve now won five straight and beaten Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in that stretch.

-USC suffered what was just their fourth loss of the year as they fell at home to Arizona 81-72.  While it is a bit of a setback, and it may hurt their chances of getting a protected seed, the Trojans are still in really good shape overall.

-Tennessee had been slumping a little bit, and they really ramped up that slumping yesterday!  Kentucky blew them off the court for a 70-55 win, despite a terrible shooting performance in the second half.  Kentucky probably can’t get in without the auto-bid, but they are starting to show signs of life.

-Indiana couldn’t hold off Michigan State at home.  It’s not a backbreaking loss for the Hoosiers, but it was a winnable game that they could have really used and at just 12-10 on the year they may be getting understandably anxious.

-Louisville lost by 45 to North Carolina yesterday in what was one of the more impressive showings for the Tarheels of the year, and one of the most gawd-awful showings for Louisville for the year.

-Oregon and Colorado both had to sweat out weaker opponents, but both held on to wins that they really needed.

-VCU followed up their big win against Richmond with a damaging loss to George Mason.  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

-Stanford fell in a triple overtime thriller at Washington State in a game that they had multiple chances to win and kind of needed to win.  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

-Seton Hall had what appeared to be a very winnable road game at Georgetown yesterday, but they failed to get it done.  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

-Ole Miss had really been on a roll, and they were hosting rival Mississippi State last night in a game that looked like would be an easy win.  They failed to get it done and lost 66-56.  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

-Saint John’s had been on a roll!  They had won eight of their last nine and picked up several big wins in that stretch!  They went from being left for dead to playing their way onto the bubble!  Yesterday they had what appeared to be an easy game at home against DePaul!  But…THEY LOST!!  They are one of several bubble teams who needed to hold serve yesterday, but didn’t.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-MICHIGAN AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten).  This is a big rivalry game between two top four teams that could both end up on the #1 line.  It’s not a game that either team really “needs” since they are both pretty much locks to make the NCAA Tournament, but it is a huge showcase game and a big litmus test, and the winner will be very much on track to get a #1 seed.

-CINCINNATI AT HOUSTON (American).  Cincinnati has had a disappointing season overall, but they have won their last four games, and played Wichita State very close before that, so they could make some noise in the AAC between now and the end.  If they pull the upset today against a Houston team that’s looking to bounce back from their loss to Wichita State, they’ll make more than just a little noise.

-MARYLAND AT RUTGERS (Big Ten).  This is a resume building opportunity for two teams who could really benefit from padding their resumes a little bit.  Maryland is looking for their fourth straight win, and Rutgers is looking for a stabilizing win after losing two of their last three.

-EVANSVILLE AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley).  Drake will likely make the field so long as they win all their remaining regular season games, which they are certainly good enough to do.

-PENN STATE AT IOWA (Big Ten).  Iowa has won three straight and is coming off a blowout win at Wisconsin, which was perhaps their most impressive performance of the year.  They can keep that momentum going with a win today.

-WISCONSIN AT NORTHWESTERN (Big Ten).  Wisconsin is in relatively good shape for a bid, but they have lost three of their last four and don’t have anything overly impressive on their resume that would indicate they deserve a protected seed, so holding serve today is important.

-BUTLER AT XAVIER (Big East).  Xavier is sliding down the seedlist and really needs to avoid a loss to a Butler team that’s nowhere close to making the field.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Sunday, February 21

Prairie View A&M at Texas Southern, 5:00 PM Eastern, Texas Southern YouTube

Following Saturday’s games, only six teams remain in the nation that are undefeated in conference play.  Gonzaga, Baylor, Belmont, UTRGV, and a pair of SWAC teams — Jackson State and Prairie View.  With these two undefeated teams not currently scheduled to face each other until the conference tournament, the toughest test that either one will face before then is scheduled for this evening as the Panthers of Prairie View A&M will be in Houston to take on the Texas Southern Tigers.

Prairie View enters today’s game at 7-4 overall and 6-0 in SWAC play.  They are led by Cam Mack who is averaging 14.4 points and 8.5 assists per game.  Jawaun Daniels should also be watched, as he led the Panthers with 21 points and 6 rebounds in Prairie View’s 73-67 win over TSU at home last month.  Texas Southern currently sits at 7-7 overall and 4-2 in SWAC play.  The Tigers are led by Michael Weathers (14 points per game) and John Walker III (12 points per game).  Galen Alexander had 15 points to lead the Tigers in the loss at Prairie View last month.  A win by  the Panthers today will make the SWAC regular season title clearly a two-horse race the rest of the way, while a home win by Texas Southern will keep the Tigers within striking distance and could lead to a ton of intrigue over the final two weeks of play.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Feb 20th

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game(s) of the Day, which impact who the first place finisher in the Horizon League will be – CLICK HERE

-Saint Louis appeared to have the pieces to be a tournament team coming into the year, but they have seldom looked that way during the season, and they DEFINITELY did not look that way yesterday.  Dayton absolutely blew their doors off in a 76-53 route in the most recent addition of the Arch Baron Cup.

-Boise State completed the sweep of Utah State in another exciting game last night.  The 81-77 win all but assures Boise State a spot inside the field barring a collapse in their last few games, whereas Utah State is outside the bubble and needs a big finish to even be considered if they don’t win the MWC Tournament.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT INDIANA (Big Ten).  Indiana needs to hold serve to stay on the right side of the bubble.  Michigan State could still play their way in to the field if they finish strong, but they’ve shown no signs whatsoever of being able to do that.

-GEORGIA TECH AT MIAMI FL (ACC).  Georgia Tech appears to clearly be outside the bubble, but if they can string together some wins down the stretch they could make a run at it.

-VANDERBILT AT ALABAMA (SEC).  Alabama will likely end up as high as the #2 line if they continue to win at the clip they have been and avoid slip ups in games like this.

-UCONN AT VILLANOVA (Big East).  UConn is hovering around the bubble and could use a big time win to get them safely inside of it.  Nova is in all likelihood a protected seed, but they’ve looked vulnerable their last couple of times out and could use a win like this just for stabilization.

-KENTUCKY AT TENNESSEE (SEC).  Tennessee is cruising toward a protected seed, but has also looked a little sluggish in some of their recent games.  They did blow out South Carolina in their last game, so perhaps they’re snapping out of it, but they don’t want to sleepwalk today.

-TEXAS TECH AT KANSAS (Big 12).  After going through a bit of a slump, Kansas has been playing much better and has a chance at a really big win today against a Texas Tech team that seems to be heading toward a protected seed.

-MISSOURI AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  Mizzou has had a good season, but has struggled in their last few games.  This is a winnable road game and a good opportunity to bounce back.

-NOTRE DAME AT SYRACUSE (ACC).  Syracuse has been outside the bubble pretty much all season long and will need to finish strong to have any sort of a chance of getting in.

-GEORGE MASON AT VCU (Atlantic Ten).  VCU has won six straight, and is coming off two big wins against Saint Bonaventure and Richmond to make a case that they are the strongest team in the Atlantic Ten.  They are good enough to win out, and if they do they’ll be inside the bubble.

-WEST VIRGINIA AT TEXAS (Big 12).  This is a game between two top 15 teams.  Both have good chances of ending up as a protected seed, and a win today would help out that cause even more.

-BYU AT LMU (West Coast).  BYU shouldn’t have any trouble holding serve in this one.  They will safely make the field, and will likely go in on the first ballot, if they finish strong.

-ILLINOIS AT MINNESOTA (Big Ten).  Minnesota continues to look like a top 10 team at home and a team that can’t win at all on the road.  Illinois is simply looking like a top ten team period, so it should be a good game.  It’s also a game that Illinois should get quite a bit of credit for if they win because of how good Minney has been at home.

-GEORGIA AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Florida looked as though they were getting better, but they’ve lost their last two games and need to get things turned around.  They need to hold serve at home today.

-FLORIDA STATE AT PITTSBURGH (ACC).  Florida State is playing as well as anyone in the ACC right now, and looks like they are going to have a strong finish to the season and end up as a protected seed.

-STANFORD AT WASHINGTON STATE (Pac 12).  Stanford is one of the many teams that makes up the crowded bubble.  Like every game they play, this one is important.  They need to hold serve.

-AUBURN AT LSU (SEC).  LSU is coming off a big win against Tennessee and appears to be heading in the right direction at the right time.  They should be able to pick this one up at home.

-DUQUESNE AT RICHMOND (Atlantic Ten).  If Richmond wants any shot at all at landing inside the bubble they pretty much need to win out and then pick up at least one decent win in the conference tournament.

-TENNESSEE TECH AT BELMONT (Ohio Valley).  Belmont has just one loss and will be looked at by the committee so long as they win out through the regular season.

-KANSAS STATE AT TCU (Big 12).  TCU still has an outside shot at making the field, but it is an outside shot at best.  They need a very strong finish just to get in the conversation.

-SETON HALL AT GEORGETOWN (Big East).  Seton Hall has won four in a row and I like how they’ve been playing.  This is a very winnable road game which would give them five straight and get them one step closer toward making the field.

-PURDUE AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten).  After a bit of a slow start, the Boilers are playing really well.  they have won just three of their last five, but both losses were close games against tough teams.  This is a very winnable game where they should hold serve and sustain their momentum.

-OKLAHOMA AT IOWA STATE (Big 12).  Oklahoma continues to climb the rankings and climb the seedlist.  If they can finish strong they could end up seeded as high as the #2 line.  They shouldn’t have too much trouble holding serve today.

-ARIZONA AT USC (Pac 12).  USC is as hot as anyone in the country right now.  A win gets them to 19-3 on the year and continues to allow them to make the case that they deserve a protected seed.

-LOUISVILLE AT NORTH CAROLINA (ACC).  Calling this a must-win is overstating it a bit, but it’s a game that both teams could REALLY use.  Both resumes are a little flimsy, so there should definitely be a sense of urgency to this one.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT OLE MISS (SEC).  Ole Miss has won four straight and beaten both Missouri and Tennessee in that stretch, so they are making a big case that they belong in the field.  They have a winnable game at home against their rivals tonight.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT FRESNO STATE (Mountain West).  San Diego State is squarely on the bubble.  They must hold serve in games like this and finish strong overall.

-DEPAUL AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East).  The Johnnies have won seven of their last eight, are playing really well, and will likely land inside the bubble if they keep it up.  They had a lot of ground to make up before they started that streak, but they look like they’ll be in good shape if they can hold serve in games like this.

-SAN DIEGO AT GONZAGA (West Coast).  Gonzaga remains the nation’s top team and will finish the season ranked #1 and on the #1 line if they win out, which they are easily good enough to do.

-VIRGINIA AT DUKE (ACC).  Virginia is coming off a rather decisive loss to Florida State, but they’ve still played well overall down the stretch and should have a protected seed pretty much locked up so long as they don’t go into the tank.

-COLORADO AT OREGON STATE (Pac 12).  Colorado isn’t in any real danger of missing the tournament, but their resume could still use some work and they still want to hold serve in games like this to avoid sliding too far down the seedlist.

-ARKANSAS AT TEXAS A&M (SEC).  As much as I had beaten up on Arkansas for most of the year, they have shut me up these past couple weeks.  They are playing great, they are looking like a team that will land in the top half of the bracket, and they’ve got a winnable game tonight.

-COLORADO STATE AT NEVADA (Mountain West).  We have Colorado State inside the bubble, but not locked into the field, so all their remaining games are big.  Nevada is not to be overlooked, either.  They’ve won four straight, and six out of their last eight, and it would almost assuredly be more than that had their two games with San Jose State not been postponed.

-UTAH AT OREGON (Pac 12).  Oregon is finally starting to get into a flow.  They’ve won their last four, they looked really good the other night against Colorado, and can puck up another one today.

-ARIZONA STATE AT UCLA (Pac 12).  UCLA had been slumping, but they had a good win the other night against Arizona and should be able to follow that up with another one tonight against an Arizona State team that just hasn’t looked good at all this season.

Under the Radar Games of the Day – Saturday, February 20

Wright State at Northern Kentucky, 5:00 PM Eastern, espn3
Cleveland State at Purdue-Fort Wayne, 5:00 PM Eastern, espn3

The Horizon League regular season championship will be decided today in the pair of games featured as our Under the Radar Games of the Day — Wright State at Northern Kentucky and Cleveland State at Fort Wayne.  After both Wright State and Cleveland State suffered upset losses last night, the two teams remain tied for first place in the Horizon heading into todays regular season finales.

Wright State (17-5 overall, 15-4 in conference) is led by their star player, Loudon Love.  Love is averaging a double-double with 16.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.  However, despite being pretty much right on those numbers last night (16 and 10) and having four other teammates join him in double-digits, Wright State still lost 81-75 at NKU.  Northern Kentucky (13-9 overall, 11-6 in conference) had four players of their own in double figures led by 23 from Marques Warrick.  Wright State has the top-rated defense in the Horizon League, but has now given up over 80 points in three straight games and needs to get their defense back in line heading into this evening’s huge contest and the Horizon League tournament.

Cleveland State (15-7 overall 15-4 in conference) is led by Torrey Patton who is averaging 13.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.  Despite scoring a team0high 17 last night, the Vikings were unable to contain Purdue-Fort Wayne’s Jalon Pipkins (19 points) and Bobby Planutis (16 points).  The Mastodons (7-13 overall, 6-13 in conference) were able to score the 75-68 upset win and spoil Cleveland State’s chance at takin a one game lead inn the league standings heading into today’s action.

These two games will decide the regular season title and which team will be the #1 seed in the Horizon League tournament, which starts with first round games this coming Thursday (though the top four seeds will not play until Tuesday, March 2).  If either team wins while the other loses, the winner will take the crown.  Should both teams win (or lose), the top seed will be determined by the league’s tiebreaker system, which may actually need the result of today’s Robert Morris at Detroit Mercy game to help figure things out.  In any event, we will have a decision today and our first conference tournament bracket posted by no later than tomorrow morning!

What a Guy!: HoopsHD interviews Sonny Hill about Hall of Famer Guy Rodgers

There have been a lot of great basketball players to come out of the City of Brotherly Love but Guy Rodgers has to be considered 1 of the best. During college he helped lead Temple to a 3rd-place postseason finish for 3 straight years (1956 NCAA Tournament/1957 NIT/1958 NCAA Tournament) before graduating as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1767 career PTS. After becoming a territorial pick of the Philadelphia Warriors in the 1958 NBA draft he later tied Bob Cousy’s record of 28 assists in a single game in 1963 and was named an All-Star 4 times in a 5-year span from 1963-1967. He died in 2001 and was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with another Philadelphia legend named Sonny Hill (who has spent more than 50 years in broadcasting, including 30+years with his own radio show on WIP) about Guy’s amazing career in both college and the NBA. Today marks the 20th anniversary of Guy’s passing on February 19, 2001 so we are proud to reflect on his life and legacy.

Rodgers scored 18.5 PPG in his 1st year on the varsity squad at Temple: how was he able to come in and contribute right from the start? Back then there was a rule that freshmen could not play so he only had 3 years of college eligibility. Guy was so good and so far ahead of the game that he could have started at any college in the country even when he was a high school junior. He could handle the ball and had a great basketball IQ so he was more than equipped to do what he did as a sophomore.

In the 1956 Final 4 he scored 28 PTS and tourney MOP Hal Lear scored 32 PTS in a 7-PT loss to Iowa: where does that Owl backcourt rank among the greatest in college basketball history? There is no college backcourt at the level of Hal Lear/Guy Rodgers. Hal set an NCAA tourney record in 1956 when he scored 48 PTS in a 9-PT win over SMU in the 3rd-place game. Guy was the quintessential dribbler/ball-handler. They were both left-handed and quick as a hiccup so they were the ideal combination. The only other comparable college basketball backcourt was Walt Hazzard/Gail Goodrich during the early-1960s at UCLA, who helped lead the Bruins to an undefeated NCAA title in 1964. Walt came from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia and helped put UCLA on the map. Walt was raised by Guy and mentored by Hal, who was a few years ahead of him at Overbrook.

In the 1958 Final 4 he scored 22 PTS in a 1-PT loss to Kentucky: how much of a home-court advantage did the Wildcats have while playing in Louisville, and do you think that Temple would have won the game if his back was healthy? They stole the ball game because of what you said. Kentucky was 1 of the premier teams in the country and the Temple players were dealing with the effects of racism and were treated as 2nd-class citizens. The burden of the environment led to the referees’ calls favoring the Wildcats rather than having a fair game. Guy/Hal were called the “Dusty Twins” due to being a pair of Black players.

He was a 2-time All-American: what did it mean to him to receive such outstanding honors? He appreciated the fact that he could get the recognition but he was so assured of his abilities that it was normal for him to be a dominant player who had a tremendous impact on how the game was being played. Prior to Guy/Hal and other players of the early 1950s there was not a great influx of Black players, and those who came into the NCAA had to deal with the good-old-boy network if they wanted to get onto the floor. Think about how many Black players were given an opportunity to blossom thanks to Coach Harry Litwack at Temple. They were allowed to play the Black game with a little pizazz rather than the mundane White game of passing the ball 3-4 times before trying to score. The Black players brought speed/excitement to the White colleges, where they finally got the recognition despite the good-old-boy network of White coaches.

He scored 11 PTS and had a game-high 20 AST during Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-PT game in March 1962 as the Warriors beat the Knicks 169-147: do you think that Wilt would have been able to hit the century mark without Rodgers’ help? Guy was drafted by the Warriors in 1958 and Wilt was drafted the following year in 1959. Most players did not know how to pass the ball to Wilt: they would pass it to his feet even though he was 7’1”! Guy was Wilt’s mentor so he knew how to throw the ball to him up high. Wilt would get a rebound, pass to Guy while he sped down the floor, and then receive a pass for an alley-oop.

In Game 7 of the 1962 Eastern Division Finals he scored 18 PTS but Sam Jones scored 28 PTS including the series-winning shot with 2 seconds left in a 2-PT win by Boston, and in the 1964 NBA Finals as a member of the San Francisco Warriors he lost to the Celtics in 5 games: was he frustrated to keep making deep runs in the playoffs only to run into the Celtics dynasty over and over? Yes: it was not only Guy but also his teammates such as Paul Arizin/Tom Gola. Nobody else could get by Boston back then so it was just a matter of trying to beat a team that was so well put together by Red Auerbach. Red was ahead of his time in opening the door and letting the Black players in (like Bill Russell). St. Louis owner Ben Kerner did not want a Black player so he traded Russell for Cliff Hagan/Ed Macauley.

He played for a pair of great coaches in Harry Litwack (college)/Alex Hannum (NBA): how were these fellow Hall of Famers able to get the most out of him? If we discuss the best all-time players both physically/mentally it would have to be Guy. He did not need coaches to motivate him but simply support him and allow him to play his game. Harry probably did not let Guy play his total game and use all of the tricks in his bag. Guy grew up when the Harlem Globetrotters were very famous. I played against Marques Haynes (who was the greatest dribbler ever) but Guy did not want to be accused of playing “Globetrotter basketball” so he reserved himself to a large degree. As a White player Bob Cousy could dribble behind his back and get away with it, even though he was just emulating what Haynes was already doing. It was different for Black players so Guy would submerge the things that he did in the schoolyard. Guy could come down the floor, wrap it around his back, and use his fist to punch the ball to a teammate for a layup. He was a great innovator and an extraordinary dribbler. He had tremendous reflexes: if you dropped a dollar bill between his thumb/finger he could catch it before it hit the ground. Pete Maravich emulated the Globetrotters and wanted to be the 1st White Globetrotter but they never accused him of putting on a show.

He led the NBA in AST in 1963/1967, finished 2nd in the league 6 other times, and his 7.8 career APG remains in the top-20 all-time: what made him such a great PG? He saw the game 2 plays ahead of everybody else, whereas most players are only 1 play ahead. I never remember him turning the ball over: I have asked other people the same question and they do not remember him doing that either. When guys like Bob Davies/Oscar Robertson made a pass it led directly to a layup, and John Stockton would get a lot of AST by passing to guys who would make jump shots. Pure assists were the old version. Harvey Pollack was 1 of the greatest statisticians ever: he told me that he went to games at the Boston Garden and watched the official scorers pad Cousy’s AST numbers/Russell’s REB numbers. You have to be careful when you talk about stats and how they are calculated: they are so liberal today. Nate “Tiny” Archibald is 1 of the quickest guards in the history of the sport: I asked him once who could bring the ball up the fastest and with no hesitation he said it was Guy.

In 2014 he was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame: how proud were you to see him get inducted? I was in the forefront of the hypocrisy that he was not inducted previously. I lobbied for many many years until his nomination finally went to the Old-Timers Committee.

When people look back on his career, how do you think that he should be remembered the most? I had Oscar on my radio show once and asked him who was the best passer/dribbler/ball-handler that he had ever seen. He does not give it up easily but without hesitation he said Guy. The only player in the history of the Big 5 to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player is Guy. The Big 5 was formed in 1956, which was after Arizin/Gola played in college.
