NEWS AND NOTES

-Wisconsin needed a couple of overtimes, but they were able to hold off Indiana at home, which should keep them in the top ten and solidly in the discussion for a #1 seed.  For the Hoosiers it was heartbreaking, but if they play like that the rest of the way they’ll get the wins they need to land inside the bubble and go dancing this March.

-Northwestern looked fantastic in the first half against Illinois!!  It was a very impressive showing after getting blown out so badly their last time out!!  Then the second half started, and what was a blowout lead for the Wildcats ended up being a blowout loss as Illinois outscored them 53-13 in the second half.  You don’t often see a game that starts out as a blowout, and then turns into an inverse blowout.

-Colorado picked up a huge win against Oregon that is both an important win for their resume and a statement win on the court.  The Buffs had looked good this season, but didn’t have too many wins of this calbier.

-SMU suffered a pretty big setback as they fell to Cincinnati at home.  Cincinnati has been hot and cold this season, but mostly cold, so this one could hurt SMU in the end.

-UCLA outlasted Arizona State to add another decent win to a decent profile.  It’s not a great profile, but it is decent and is probably being a little undervalued.

-Gonzaga jumped out to a 25-4 lead over BYU.  I changed the channel.  I don’t think anything unexpected happened after that.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-OHIO U AT TOLEDO (MAC).  Ohio looked to be one of the best teams in the MAC right out of the gate, but Toledo has looked like one of the best teams in the MAC in recent weeks and is putting together quite a season.

-PURDUE AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten).  Michigan State has looked rather anemic at times this season, but they are coming off a decisive win against Rutgers, which was probably their most impressive performance of the year, and may be starting to look like a solid protected seed.

-GEORGIA STATE AT TROY (Sun Belt).  I think Georgia State has a path to landing inside the bubble, but they need to totally dominate the SBC in order to do it.

-AIR FORCE AT BOISE STATE (Mountain West).  Boise State looks like a solid tournament caliber team who should end up inside the bubble so long as they don’t fail to hold serve in games like this.

-LOUISIANA TECH AT WESTERN KENTUCKY (Conference USA).  These are two of the better CUSA teams.  If WKU can pick up the sweep they may have a clear shot at winning out or coming close to it.

Under The Radar: January 7th

Tonight’s feature conference is the Big South.  We discuss what an unbelievable year Winthrop is having with an undefeated season, and we discuss their chances of making the NCAA Tournament if they fail to win the conference tournament.

From there we run through the other 20 UTR leagues and discuss what an amazing year Drake is having and how they could end up in the top 25, how the NEC is back in action, how Western Kentucky dropped one of their two games against Charlotte and what that means for the Toppers, how Furman is once again looking like a really strong team, and how several teams in the Big West are having trouble getting games in.

And, as we do every week, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Thursday, January 7th

For today’s News, Notes and Highlighted Games – CLICK HERE

Jacksonville State (7-2, 3-0) at Eastern Kentucky (9-2, 3-1) – 8:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day goes to the OVC where the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky will host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. We normally talk more about coach Ray Harper’s teams in March when they’re making unexpected postseason runs (i.e. Jax St., Western Kentucky), but the Gamecocks have gotten off to a 3-0 start in league play this year. With the wins coming against bottom feeders like Tennessee Tech and UT-Martin, tonight’s game represents a huge jump up in competition. Darian Adams is averaging just over 14 points a game for Jax State.

Eastern Kentucky continues to look more and more like a team that will be in the thick of the OVC race this year. The Colonels ended up splitting games with Morehead State to start league play (and frankly were lucky not to be swept), but an 80-75 win at Austin Peay in their last game was a more encouraging sign. Wendell Green Jr. had 30 points for EKU in their last outing.

NEWS AND NOTES

-It was a busy day both inside and outside of college basketball yesterday.  We decided to postpone Under the Radar until tonight so be on the lookout for that.  We hope everyone out there, regardless of political affiliation, is safe and has a healthy peace of mind after yesterday.  Other than those well wishes, we will stick what we stick to on this site, which is college basketball.

-Seton Hall had looked really good coming into yesterday’s game at Creighton.  They did not look good yesterday.  Creighton, on the other hand, looked amazing.  They blew The Hall off the court 89-53 in one of the most impressive single game performances we’ve seen from a Big East team (or any team that isn’t Gonzaga) all season long.

-Tennessee had to come from behind to beat Arkansas in a 79-74 battle.  While Arkansas didn’t win, I think I was more impressed with them yesterday than I had been at any point before that.

-Minnesota continues to look like a protected seed at home and a sub-NIT team on the road.  Michigan blew their doors off 82-57.

-Louisville appeared to have Virginia Tech at arms length for the whole game, but the Hokies kept it just close enough to keep it within reach, and actually had a shot to win the game as time expired, but the Cardinals held on for the 73-71 win.

-Duke beat Boston College.  By 1.  At home.  I think it’s time for me to say that I’m not all that impressed with Duke this year.

-Pitt got a really nice road win against Syracuse.  We were quick to write off the Panthers when they lost their season opener, but they’ve lost just one game since then and are now starting to rack up some quality wins.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-OREGON AT COLORADO (Pac 12).  Oregon is in the rankings, but has a chance to pick up what would be one of their better wins of the season so far considering that it’s a conference road game against a Colorado team that appears to be of tournament caliber (but who could also use a notable win of their own).

-IOWA AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  Iowa continues to look like a solid protected seed who could win the Big Ten and/or end up as a #1 seed.

-INDIANA AT WISCONSIN (Big Ten).  Indiana is looking to safely secure a spot inside the bubble and a win in a game like this can certainly help with that.  Wisky is trying to win a Big Ten title and earn a #1 seed.

-CINCINNATI AT SMU (American).  SMU is coming off their first loss of the season, but it was to Houston so it’s hardly damaging.  They’re in good shape and will remain that way so long as they hold serve tonight.

-SEMO AT BELMONT (Ohio Valley).  A win for Belmont gets them to 11-1, and if they run the table in the OVC, which they are good enough to do, they may sneak inside the bubble.

-COLORADO STATE AT UNLV (Mountain West).  Colorado State’s big win against San Diego State has made them look like a possible tournament team, but they pretty much need to roll over all their opponents who are outside the bubble if they want to get there.

-BYU AT GONZAGA (West Coast).  BYU looks like a solid tournament team, but even solid tournament teams are overmatched by Gonzaga.  I mean hell! protected seeds appear to be overmatched by Gonzaga.

-ILLINOIS AT NORTHWESTERN (Big Ten).  Northwestern has been on a bit of a skid since getting off to such an incredible start, and it will be tough to pull themselves out of it tonight against an Illinois team that’s in the rankings and looking like they can earn a protected seed.

-WASHINGTON AT STANFORD (Pac 12).  I still think this Stanford team has potential, but they need to pick up some big wins between now and the end.  They also need to hold serve in games like this.

-USC AT ARIZONA (Pac 12).  I like this USC team, but their resume could use some patch work.  A road win in a game like this would certainly help.

-WASHINGTON STATE AT CALIFORNIA (Pac 12).  Wazzu’s only loss of the season was in overtime to Arizona.  The problem is they have no quality wins to speak of, but they’ll get their chances between now and the end.  They also need to keep beating up on non-tournament teams in order to have a chance.

-NEVADA AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West).  San Diego State still looks like a team that will land solidly inside the bubble despite a couple of setbacks.  They need to hold serve in games like this.

-UCLA AT ARIZONA STATE (Pac 12).  I think these are two likely tournament teams, but it’s also two teams who need to build up their resumes and tonight’s game is an opportunity to do that.

Happy Birthday!: HoopsHD interviews Ray Goddard about Indiana State legend Duane Klueh

He was an All-American player at Indiana State, graduated as the all-time leading scorer in school history, was drafted by the Celtics, had his number retired by his alma mater, and is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. It may sound a lot like Larry Bird…but this is ALSO a description of Duane Klueh, who later returned to Terre Haute to become a coach and remains the winningest coach in school history (although Greg Lansing might catch him later this year). He led the Sycamores during their transition from the NAIA to the NCAA, won 3 conference titles, and made the postseason 5 times during a 9-year span from 1959-1967. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with former player Ray Goddard about the life/legacy of Coach Klueh. Today is Duane’s 95th birthday so let us be the 1st to wish him a happy 1!

Klueh’s coach during his 1st 2 years at Indiana State was future Hall of Famer John Wooden: how much influence did Wooden have on his own decision to become a coach? I think that he had a lot of influence on him and helped him a lot with the way that he played and his coaching style. They were very similar: they rarely raised their voices and were very positive all of the time. When I played for him we ran fast up and down the court, just like Wooden’s teams did.

As a junior at Indiana State he was #2 in the nation with 597 PTS, an All-American, and 1948 NAIA tourney MVP before being picked by the Celtics in the 1949 NBA draft: how good a player was he back in the day, and how did he 1st get into coaching? He was a great player. He was 1 of the 1st players on the night that the NBA started and scored the very 1st point in the league’s history! He was very fast and a good all-around player who was productive. You could tell that he knew a lot about the pro style and used some of that with us.

After the 1947 Sycamore team refused to go to the NAIA tourney due to the organization’s segregationist rules, the 1948 version became the 1st to ever play in a national tourney with an African-American player (Clarence Walker): how did all of that impact his views on race relations? Coach Klueh was way ahead of his time and 1 of the team leaders due to the type of personality he had.

He was named head coach at his alma mater in 1955 at age 28: was his relatively young age an advantage or disadvantage in the locker room? I would say that it was a little of both. He did not have a lot of coaching experience to draw on, but the players of that era listened to you more than they do in today’s world. I think his players listened to him because he was such a great player himself.

He was also a nationally-ranked senior tennis player who led the Sycamores to a school-record 278 wins during his 26-year career as the school’s tennis coach: which sport was he best at, and which sport did he enjoy the most? He would probably say that he loved tennis more than anything but he loved basketball too. He played tennis into his 80s and had several knee operations so that he could continue to play. He could beat all of his players while he was still the coach!

He resigned at age 40 allegedly due to the pressure caused by recruiting: how big a factor was recruiting outside of the D-1 realm, and why could he not just designate 1 of his assistant coaches to do all of the recruiting? In his case he did everything himself. He had an assistant who was a great guy but was not a recruiter and never went out on the road. Coach Klueh recruited some players who could have played at any level. He had a couple of years where he finished runner-up in the NAIA tourney before the school decided to replace him: it was a sad day in Indiana State basketball history.

His 182 wins remain the most in school history: did he realize at the time how prolific a coach he was, and do you think that anyone will ever break his record? He was kind of overlooked while he was actually coaching, but as the years have gone on and we have had some unsuccessful coaches here, people have come to appreciate him a lot more. We have been a little better recently but he is still viewed as our best coach ever. Larry Bird had a great coach as well in Bill Hodges but he got the job by accident after Bob King’s illness.

He is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame: where does that rank among the highlights of his career? That is probably right up there. The school retired his jersey a few years ago, which was also 1 of his highlights.

When people look back on his career, how do you think that he should be remembered the most? Speaking as 1 of his players, he should be viewed as a great person who handled all of his players in such a way that they would speak highly of him. I do not think that you will find any of his players who have a bad word to say about him: he was a great coach/great person.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Wednesday, Jan 6th

NEWS AND NOTES

-Missouri looked like a top 20 team in the first half against Mississippi State, and looked like a sub-200 team in the second half.  A lot of credit to the Bulldogs for blowing them out of the arena by outscoring them by 27 in the second half and handing Mizzou just their second loss of the season.

-Rutgers couldn’t get their motor started at all against Michigan State and was blown off the floor as well.  Sparty looked as good as they had all year, especially in the second half, as they picked up the 68-45 win.

-Clemson added another notable win to their already pretty noteworthy profile as they held off NC State 74-70 in overtime.  They trailed for most of the game, but stayed in it, made big plays when they had to, and got the win.

-Alabama followed up their big win against Tennessee with another really impressive win against Florida.  The Tide kept the Gators at arms length for pretty much the entire game and then pulled away at the end for the 86-71 win.

-Winthrop got a huge scare from Charleston Southern on the road, but got the 78-76 win and remain unbeaten.

-In case you’re wondering, Dayton is not as good as they were a year ago.  They lost to a rather pitiful Fordham team 55-54 yesterday and aren’t even looking like an NIT team at the moment.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-TULSA AT SOUTH FLORIDA (American).  Tulsa is beginning to make some noise, especially after their big win against Houston.  If they can pick up this conference road win and improve to 7-3 then they will definitely have our attention.

-SAINT JOSEPH’S AT SAINT BONAVENTURE (Atlantic Ten).  The Bonnies had a rather big setback after their loss to Rhode Island.  A home loss to a winless Saint Joe’s team would be more than just a setback.  It would be like losing a buy game.

-PITTSBURGH AT SYRACUSE (ACC).  If Pitt can pick up this win on the road I’ll start to become a believer.  They did fall to Louisville in their last game, but Louisville is tough and it was their first loss since the season opener.  Syracuse is a solid 6-1, but their schedule hasn’t been the strongest and this would arguably be their best win of the year so far if they pull it off.

-RHODE ISLAND AT RICHMOND (Atlantic Ten).  I’m still a believer in Richmond, but they need to hold serve against non-tournament caliber teams for pretty much the rest of the year in order to land inside the bubble.

-VIRGINIA TECH AT LOUISVILLE (ACC).  VA Tech still has an amazing profile and has the chance to add another really big win to it tonight.  Louisville is 7-1 and is looking to add some good wins to their resume themselves.

-ARKANSAS AT TENNESSEE (SEC).  Arkansas has a bloated record, but they amassed it largely through buy games.  Tonight will be a real test against a Tennessee team that looks like they’re good enough to be a protected seed, but who is also coming off a loss to Alabama.

-VCU AT GEORGE MASON (Atlantic Ten).  This should be a winnable road game for a VCU team that right now feels like a bubble team.  They need to hold serve against teams that are outside the bubble.

-WICHITA STATE AT HOUSTON (American).  Virtually nothing was expected from Wichita State this year given the off the court drama just before the season started, but they’re 6-2, have looked pretty good, and have the chance to make a major statement tonight.

-SAINT JOHN’S AT XAVIER (Big East).  Xavier got blown out by Seton Hall in their last game and is looking to bounce back against a decent, but not great, Saint John’s team.

-MINNESOTA AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  Both teams are highly ranked and both seem to have a realistic path to a protected seed.  Minney hasn’t done much away from home, though, so a win tonight would add something big to their resume.

-BOSTON COLLEGE AT DUKE (ACC).  Duke hasn’t done anything impressive yet, so it’s important that they hold serve tonight.

-OKLAHOMA AT BAYLOR (Big 12).  Oklahoma barely lost to Texas Tech just before Christmas and picked up a big win against West Virginia the other night.  This is a test of an entirely different level, though.  If they can beat Baylor on the road then they’ll belong high in the rankings.

-WAKE FOREST AT VIRGINIA (ACC).  UVA shouldn’t have too much trouble holding serve tonight, staying in the rankings, and staying in good shape as far as their resume goes.

-TEXAS A&M AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  I still think this South Carolina team can have a big year, but they haven’t played many games and haven’t shown all that much in the few games they have played.  They need to take care of business tonight to keep the bubble within reach.

-SETON HALL AT CREIGHTON (Big East).  Creighton is ranked in the top ten and looking like they could easily end up with a protected seed.  Seton Hall has been a little up and down this year, but right now they’re way up with wins in seven of their last eight games and an impressive blowout win at Xavier their last time out.

-AIR FORCE AT BOISE STATE (Mountain West).  Boise State is 8-1 on the year and looks like a solid tournament team.  They should be able to hold serve tonight.
