Hanging with the Hoyas: Part 1

HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will spend the upcoming months covering several Georgetown basketball home games, with (hopefully) a very special reward coming in March. He was in attendance Wednesday evening for the Hoyas’ game at Capital 1 Arena and prepared this photo essay about their matchup against Binghamton.

The pregame meal featured 1 of the most diverse groups of side dishes that I have ever seen at a sporting event: chicken/mashed potato/sweet potato/rice/broccoli/cucumber/tomato! There was a nice moment of silence before the game to honor Paul Tagliabue, who passed away last Sunday. He is best known for his 17-year tenure as NFL commissioner, but after graduating from high school he received a scholarship to play basketball at Georgetown, and was captain of the team as a senior:

Hoya coach Ed Cooley looked confident before the game as his team was trying to get off to a 3-0 start for the 1st time since 2018 (5 years before Cooley was hired!):

Let’s tip it off with plenty of good seats still available:

Binghamton was not expected to do much, and the situation looked even bleaker after their leading scorer/rebounder Demetrius Lilley picked up his 3rd foul less than 10 minutes into the game and had to sit out the rest of the half. In response, Georgetown 7’1” center Vince Iwuchukwu went to work in the paint, converting an old-fashioned 3-PT play, getting a REB/putback, and was beat up so much that he tied a career-high with 9 FTA in just the 1st 15 minutes. The game got so physical that he had to receive some treatment on his left hand during a TV timeout:

His teammate Kayvaun Mulready had 1 of the best sequences I have seen in-person in a while. He had a steal on defense, then dribbled up court and knocked down a 3, then got another steal on the following possession and recorded his only assist of the game by finding Jeremiah Williams for an open 3. The bad news is that Kayvaun missed each of his other 4 attempts from behind the arc, but on the plus side his 7 STL this season are tied for the most in the Big East:

Since the Bearcats were short-handed due to injuries, Coach Levell Sanders only used 7 players, which was 1 reason that PG Jeremiah Quigley stayed on the court for the entire 40 minutes. He made a pull-up jumper, got to the rim for a pair of 3-PT plays, and finished the half with 14 PTS while keeping his team in the hunt:

However, Arizona transfer KJ Lewis helped the Hoyas maintain a 5-PT lead with a 3, a REB/put-back, a baseline drive leading to a reverse layup, a jump shot off the glass, and another jumper to beat the halftime buzzer:

Lewis kept things rolling in the 2nd half, getting into the lane time and again while also hitting the boards to finish with his 1st career double-double (20 PTS/10 REB). His backcourt mate Malik Mack went scoreless during the opening stanza, but flipped the switch after intermission with a jumper, a three, and a pair of floaters in the lane en route to 13 PTS as the Hoyas opened up a 23-PT lead before taking their foot off the gas as they cruised to an 83-70 victory:

After reading in the game notes that Coach Sanders had played for Seton Hall in the 1990s, I wanted to see if he had a most vivid memory of facing the Hoyas in conference play back in the day, but I did not get to ask him a question during his postgame press conference:

I asked Lewis whether his double-double was due to simply getting more minutes or the fact that Coach Cooley has helped turn him into a better all-around player. He said that it was a little of both. He will do whatever it takes to win and did a lot of that toward the end of last season in Tucson, but Coach Cooley emphasized the importance of rebounding during the offseason. He knows that he is more athletic than most other players in the country and hopes that this is not his last double-double. Coach Cooley then chimed in that it would NOT be his last 1 because he is 1 of the best players in the country:

That is a wrap for now but check back this weekend as the Hoyas host Clemson while trying to start out 4-0 for the 1st time since 2017!

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Wednesday, Nov 12th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-We will be recording this week’s Under the Radar Video Podcast tonight, so keep an eye out for that.

-Louisvlle vs Kentucky was a high energy, high intensity affair where Louisville pretty much had a lead from tip to buzzer and got up by as much as 20 in the second half. Kentucky kept hitting shots and got as close as 4, but Louisville held on for the 96-88 win. This is a nice win on paper, but I think it was a bigger win for Louisville psychologically than anything else. It wasn’t that long ago when they were crippled by NCAA sanctions and had two consecutive seasons where they won just 4 games, and then 8 games. To be back to the point to where they are now, and to get a big win over a big rival, is a big moment for that program even though it is only November. And…why did they play this game so early this year?

-One of the biggest surprises of the night, at least to me, was Wake Forest’s overtime loss to Michigan in Detroit. Wake did not win the game, but they were right in there and had chances to win both at the end of regulation and in OT. I didn’t think much of the Deacs in the preseason, but to come that close to pulling off that kind of a win, especially when they struggled offensively for certain stretches, was an impressive showing.

-Florida State, another team I was expecting almost nothing out of this year, almost pulled off a huge road upset over rival Florida. The Gators held on 78-76, but the Noles battled and were in a position to get the win. Similar to Wake, it demonstrates that they have a lot of potential and were perhaps undervalued in the preseason.

-Texas Tech went on the road to Illinois for their first big road test, and came up short 81-77. It’s a nice win for Illinois despite being at home, and as for Texas Tech the loss is hardly damaging. They were my preseason pick to win it all and I’m sticking by it. They’ll have plenty of chances for big wins throughout the season, and now they’ve gotten the feel of playing against a highly ranked team in a true road game.

-Creighton also faced a highly ranked team in a true road game in Gonzaga, and the Zags just completely blew it open in the second half and ran away with it 90-63. I don’t think Creighton is necessarily in trouble long term. I just think Gonzaga is really tough to beat at home, which is something we already knew.

-DAVIDSON WON THE HORNETS NEST!!!!! THE TROPHY IS COMING BACK TO…well…DAVIDSON!!!! They picked up their first true road win of the season 62-55 and improved to 3-0 on the year.

-Cincinnati basically led Dayton from tip to buzzer and held on for a 74-62 win. While the Bearcats didn’t blow them out, they didn’t really sweat them out either.

-Ole Miss held off Memphis at home 83-77. The loss ultimately won’t hurt Memphis that much, but these early season games are important for the Tigers since they have so few chances at the kinds of wins that would jump out at the committee once conference play starts.

-Last but not least (well, it actually is least) Central Connecticut went on the road and beat Boston College 60-59!! Our friend @HurleyMania is still celebrating!!

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-SAINT JOSEPH’S AT VIRGINIA TECH. This game probably isn’t all that exciting, but both teams come in unbeaten and VA Tech does have a notable win against Providence, so this one is at least worth tuning in to tonight, and VA Tech may surpirse us this year!

-SIENA AT SAINT BONAVENTURE (Big Four). This gets highlighted simply because both teams are 2-0 and because we love mythical conferences and regional rivalries!! Plus, the Bonnies did get at least a semi-notable win in their opener against Bradley, and can improve to 2-0 in the mythical Big Four tonight!! *NOTE FROM CHAD: While Siena and St. Bonaventure are both from upstate New York, I am fairly certain that Albany is not a suburb of Buffalo and Siena is not part of the Big Four (Canisius, Niagara, Buffalo and the Bonnies). Griggs not only loves mythical conferences, he apparently even loves adding new teams to them!

-MINNESOTA AT MISSOURI. Both teams are unbeaten, but both have only played home buy games, and the teams they’ve beaten have one a combined total of (checks notes) one D1 game (VMI over Southern Indiana). So, this is the first test for both teams.

-UT MARTIN AT BRADLEY. We are highlighting this one because Bradley is at least a decent team in the Missouri Valley this year, and UT Martin is coming in at 2-0 after already managing a road win at UNLV. If UT Martin could follow that up with a win tonight, then that’s a fantastic early start. We watch all the teams until they give us a reason not to, and UT Martin has certainly not done that yet.

-SOUTH DAKOTA STATE AT OREGON. It’s a buy game, but it’s one that’s worth watching. Oregon has been dealing with injuries and has struggled in their first two games, and South Dakota State is one of the better teams out of the Summit League.

-NORTH TEXAS AT OREGON STATE. Both teams are unbeaten and North Texas, despite all the turnover, looks to be strong again this year.

-SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AT NEVADA. Both teams are unbeaten, but this is perhaps the first semblance of a test for either one of them.

BUY GAMES AND OTHER CRAPPY (BUT MENTIONABLE) GAMES:

-Binghamton @ Georgetown
-North Florida @ Tennessee
-Elon @ Marshall – both teams 2-0
-Presbyterian @ South Caorlna
-Coppin State @ South Florida
-Saint Peter’s @ VCU
-Milwaukee @ Indiana
-American @ George Washington
-Oakland @ Houston
-Eastern Kentucky @ Vanderbilt
-Tulsa @ Oral Roberts – Tulsa should improve to 3-0 and pick up their first road win
-Little Rock @ Marquette
-Middle Tennessee @ Evansville – Middle Tennessee can get to 3-0 and pick up their first road win
-UNC Greensboro @ NC State
-Prairie View @ Oklahoma State
-Fairleigh Dickinson @ Texas
-Weber State @ Utah State (Bee Hive)
-UC San Diego @ Fresno State – UCSD should be able to stay unbeaten and pick up their first road win
-Cal Poly @ Colorado State
-Idaho @ San Diego – Idaho can get to 3-0 and pick up their second road win
-Portland State @ San Francisco
-Montana State @ Stanford – Stanford better be on upset alert

The Olympians: HoopsHD interviews Kevin Danna about 2-time Olympic gold medalist Draymond Green

The NBA Finals date back to 1947 (when they were known as the Basketball Association of America Finals) and the very 1st NCAA tourney was held in 1939. Olympic basketball competition is even older: it debuted as a demonstration event in 1904, and the men’s version became a medal sport in 1936, with the women finally getting their chance to go for the gold in 1976. The United States has dominated Olympic basketball competition from the start: the men have now won 17 gold medals in the 20 tournaments they have participated in during the past 88 years, while the women have won 10 gold medals in the 12 tournaments in which they have competed during the past 48 years. While we must wait 3 years until the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will fill the void by interviewing as many prior Olympic players/coaches as possible. We continue our coverage by chatting with Kevin Danna (play-by-play announcer for the Santa Cruz Warriors/Golden State Valkyries) about Draymond Green’s dominant defense and the gold medals he won in 2016/2020.

Draymond played basketball at Michigan State, where he made 2 Final 4s and was named Big 10 tourney MOP/consensus All-American as a senior: why was he still available when Golden State was picking 35th in the 2012 NBA Draft, and how excited were they to select him? He got drafted a few months before I was hired. In 2012 people were stuck in positional thinking: was he a SF/PF/other? A lot of guys today are not 3s or 4s but rather “3½s”. He did not fit into the prototype of a specific position.

In Game 6 of the 2015 Finals vs. Cleveland, he became the 6th player to ever record a triple-double in a Finals-clinching game (joining Magic Johnson/Larry Bird/James Worthy/Tim Duncan/LeBron James): was it just another great performance or did it transform the way that everyone viewed him? I watched that game on the big screen at Oracle when the team let a bunch of fans in to watch. I did not even realize that he had a triple-double and cannot remember much from that game besides them winning the title. I think he signed his 1st big contract right after that season: some people wondered if he would go back to his home state to play for the Pistons, so it was a relief when he decided to stay.

In 2016 he became the 1st player in NBA history to record 1000+ PTS/500+ REB/500+ AST/100+ STL/100+ BLK in 1 season: do you consider him to be a “unicorn”? He is 1 of the smartest basketball players at any level. That was his most statistically-dominant season: his numbers went down after they acquired Kevin Durant, but his IQ has a lot to do with his success.

Even though he stands just 6’6”, he played as an undersized center for Steve Kerr’s “Death Lineup” that made 5 straight NBA Finals from 2015-2019: what made that lineup so effective? They were so good defensively: in addition to Draymond, Andre Iguodala was a fantastic defender, neither Durant/Curry were slouches on defense, and at that time Klay Thompson was 1 of the best 2-way players in the league. Draymond/Andre did not shoot as much then, but the other 3 guys spread the floor so much that opponents could not stop it. I remember 1 game against Indiana where they had a full-court over-the-shoulder alley-oop that caused Durant to raise his eyebrows! They would start the 3rd quarter and a 2-possession game would become a 7-possession game in 2 minutes.

Those lineups included 2 of the most incredible teams in the history of the sport (the 2016 team that set a regular-season record by going 73-9, and the 2017 team that set a postseason record by going 16-1): which 1 impressed you the most? The 2016 team did not win the title, but after a a title in 2015 when they beat some teams with injured players like Kyrie Irving/Kevin Love, they came back super-motivated and went 24-0 to start the next season. In Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, they trailed at OKC in the 4th quarter before getting 1 of the greatest gut-check victories that I have ever seen. Curry was not at 100% during most of the playoffs: I would have loved to see that Finals matchup with Cleveland if Curry was healthy. They went 88-18 that year including the playoffs, which is incredible. The 2017 team had more talent, but the 2016 team was so dominant.

He played for Team USA at the 2016/2020 Olympics: what did it mean to him to represent his country, and what did it mean to him to win a pair of gold medals? If you are a 2-time gold medalist, that is right near the top of a Hall of Fame resume. I know the USA usually wins the gold medal, but it still means that you are considered 1 of the 12 best Americans in the NBA, which is a high honor and a big part of his legacy.

He is a 9-time All-Defensive Team member and was named DPOY in 2017: what is his secret to being a great defender? IQ…and being a 6’6” guy with a 7’3” wingspan! He loves basketball and is a student of the game. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen him disrupt fast breaks that were 2-on-1 or 3-on-1. He would guard big men like Nikola Jokic in a playoff game when they needed a stop, which allowed the Warriors to unlock their small-ball lineups.

Even though he has played with some of the greatest scorers in the history of the sport (such as Steph Curry/Kevin Durant), he is widely viewed as the “heart and soul” of the Warriors: what makes him such a great leader? His voice. He has the ability to rally his teammates as a spiritual leader because he has all the intangibles and has been there before. He plays with so much emotion that he gets the fans going: he wears his heart on his sleeve and can help change the tide of a game. He was a 2nd-round pick and does not have the pedigree of a traditional Hall of Famer, but has grinded his way into an incredible career.

His 23 career ejections rank 2nd in NBA history behind only Rasheed Wallace: how does he walk the fine line between aggressive and dirty? It is a tough line to toe, and he has stepped over the line more than a few times during his career. That is part of the Draymond experience: you do not want to see him ejected or suspended, but he has done a much better job of that during the past couple of years. Sometimes you run hot when you are an incredible competitor: I am not excusing everything that he has done, but it happens from time to time.

He was a 4-time All-Star and won 4 NBA titles during an 8-year span from 2015-2022: do you think that we will see him in the Hall of Fame someday? There might be people who disagree with me, but I do not think there is a doubt that he is a Hall of Famer. The short list of players who were named 10-time all-defensive team (such as Scottie Pippen) has motivated him. I am very biased, but I have watched 95% of his games.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Tuesday, Nov 11th

NEWS AND NOTES:

Our latest HOOPS HD REPORT VIDEO PODCAST has been posted!! Make sure you watch and/or listen so we can catch you up on everything you need to know both about college basketball and about life itself!!

-A big congrats to New Haven, who picked up their first ever win as a D1 program! They knocked off UMass Lowell on the road 73-67. UMass Lowell has had some good teams in the past. They do not appear to be good at all this year.

-Western Kentucky got a solid road win against rival Eastern Kentucky 87-79 in a game that was close all throughout. EKU likely won’t lose too many home games, so it’s a game WKU will deserve some credit for winning if the season plays out like we think it will.

-LSU pounded New Orleans 93-58. I guess I was a little too quick to discuss how UNO may be a top level UTR team this year.

-Santa Clara went on the road to Xavier and blasted them into the sun 87-68. The game was not as close as the score indicated. Santa Clara lead by 30 with just a couple minutes to play. I think Santa Clara may be pretty good, and I think Xavier is…well…not.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-WAKE FOREST VS MICHIGAN (Detroit, MI). This is the first real test for both teams. Michigan is way up in the rankings and should be heavily favored, especially since it’s in front of a favorable crowd.

-FLORIDA STATE AT FLORIDA. The Gators are looking for their first notable win of the year, and they should be heavily favored at home against their rivals. Florida State is unbeaten, but this is their first real test.

-DAVIDSON AT CHARLOTTE. It’s the best trophy game in all of sports!!! The Hornets Nest Trophy!!! Both teams come into this one 2-0 and this would be a good early season win in a rivalry game.

-DAYTON AT CINCINNATI. This is a fun regional matchup between two teams that have underperformed in recent years, but appear to be good enough to make a run at the NCAA Tournament this year. Both teams come in 2-0 and this would be the first notable win for whoever pulls it off.

-KENTUCKY AT LOUISVILLE. It’s a huge rivalry game that, for the first time in a long time, it has national importance. Both teams are highly ranked with high expectations this year, and both can end up as protected seeds, so it’s an important game both on and off paper. It does feel a little strange that the game is being played this early even though it’s an OOC game, but…whatever.

-TEXAS TECH AT ILLINOIS. My preseason pick to win it all will get their first big test of the season, and it is truly a big test. Both teams are ranked in the top 15, both have high expectations for this season, and tonight both have the chance to pick up an early resume-building win.

-MEMPHIS AT OLE MISS. This is a really fun regional match-up between two teams that have a really good shot at making the NCAA Tournament. This will be a good early season win on the profile for whoever pulls it off. Memphis already has a win against San Francisco, but this is their first road test.

-CREIGHTON AT GONZAGA. Both teams are in the rankings, so it’s a good early season match-up. This is going to be a huge test for Creighton. Gonzaga has already shown that they can play a a high level with their decisive win against Oklahoma. For Creighton this is their first real test.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Duke @ Army – it’s a notable road game, and between the tip off and the first media timeout it should be an incredible atmosphere!

-La Salle @ Temple (Big Five) – Neither team has lost yet, and a chance to beat a Big Five rival will generate some momentum

-William & Mary @ Richmond – both teams are 2-0, and we think (well, at least I do) that both can be dark horses in their conferences. This is an old CAA rivalry, so it should be fun

-Bucknell @ Princeton – Bucknell can improve to 3-0 and pick up their second true road win

-Yale @ Quinnipiac – Yale should be able to pick up their second road win of the season

-Tulane @ Louisiana – the Green Wave are 2-0 and will likely be tested tonight at the Cajun Dome

-Stephen F Austin @ Rice – it’s the first road game for SFA. They are a Southland team that is worth keeping an eye on

-Buffalo @ DePaul – I don’t think either team is all that good, but both are coming in 2-0

Arkansas State @ Missouri State – both are solid UTR teams and Missouri State can get to 3-0

-Murray State @ SMU – this is a sneaky good game. It is a buy game, and SMU should win, but Murray State is definitely good enough to win it if SMU overlooks them

-LMU @ UTEP – neither team has a loss yet, and LMU is a team to keep an eye on. This is their first road game

-Ohio U @ Saint Mary’s – I like this Ohio team, but I think they’re overmatched in that they’re on the road against a very good SMC team.

-UC Santa Barbara @ Sacramento State – both teams unbeaten

BUY GAMES:

-Appalachian State @ Ohio State
-Navy @ Penn State – Penn State can get to 3-0
-Radford @ North Carolina – both teams 2-0
-Alcorn State @ Maryland
-Catawba (nonD1) @ George Mason
-Sacred Heart @ Villanova
-Jacksonville @ High Point
-Chicago State @ Butler
-Morehead State @ Clemson
-Penn @ Providence
-Eastern Illinois @ Notre Dame
-Central Arkansas @ Arkansas
-Wofford @ Auburn
-TAMUCC @ Kansas
-UMES @ Nebraska
-Queens @ Duquesne
-Ball State @ Wisconsin – both teams 2-0
-Austin Peay @ Wyoming – both teams 2-0
-Northern Arizona @ Arizona
-Delaware @ BYU
-UC Riverside @ New Mexico – both teams 2-0
-UTRGV @ Boise State

The Hoops HD Report – Week 2

Chad and the panel review a very busy first week of the season and take a look ahead to the big games coming up this week. The ACC is off to a solid start, but the vast majority of the wins were home buy games and we debate whether or not how strong the league actually is. North Carolina and Duke both managed notable wins. Arizona had a huge win over Florida and is off to a great start, and Oklahoma State had a nice win over Texas A&M. In the Big Ten, Indiana looked very impressive against Marquette and Michigan State had a big win over Arkansas. In the SEC, Alabama went on the road and got a big one at Saint John’s, which will likely end up being one of the better true road wins that any team manages this season. We also take a look at how awful the Mountain West has been so far. We discuss all that, and more!

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

The Olympians: HoopsHD interviews Kevin Danna about 2024 Olympic gold medalist Steph Curry

We continue our coverage by chatting with Kevin Danna (play-by-play announcer for the Santa Cruz Warriors/Golden State Valkyries) about Steph Curry’s dominance at Davidson and the gold medal he won in 2024.

Steph’s father Dell spent 16 years in the NBA: how much of an impact did he have on his son’s future success? If you go back into the NBA archives you will see a lot of video of Steph shooting on NBA courts. I think it made a big impact.

He played basketball at Davidson, where he was a 2-time All-American, set the NCAA single-season record with 162 3PM as a sophomore, and led the nation with 28.6 PPG as a junior: is it true that Dell called teams with the 1st 7 picks in the 2009 NBA Draft and told them not to select Steph because he wanted the Knicks to take him with the 8th pick, and why did the Warriors select him 7th? I do not know if the story is true but I have heard something similar. Larry Riley was the GM at the time and Don Nelson was the head coach: I think they saw a budding star even though Steph was undersized. I remember the 2008 NCAA tourney when he almost took Davidson to the Final 4: it was 1 of the most amazing runs we have ever seen. At the end of the day, what is he going to do if you draft him: not show up?! We are a “glamour” franchise now, but growing up out here as a kid I never even dreamed about them making the Finals. When they made the playoffs in 2007 and won a series against Dallas I was over the moon. They did not get any free agents and things were not like they are now.

In February of 2013 he scored career-high 54 PTS and set a franchise record with 11 3PM in a 4-PT loss to the Knicks (becoming the 1st player in NBA history with 50+ PTS/10+ 3PM in 1 game): do you recall that being just the next 1 in a long line of great performances, or 1 of those games that turned him from Steph Curry into STEPH CURRY? I think it is the latter. That was my 1st year working in the organization and I definitely recall the game. It was the 1st time that people around the league realized that he was for real. They call Madison Square Garden the “Mecca of Basketball” so everything gets magnified, and the game was on ESPN so it was even bigger.

He won his 1st of 2 consecutive MVP awards in 2015: how was he able to put up such great stats (23.8 PPG/7.7 APG/2 SPG) while sitting out the 4th quarter of 17 games due to his team’s dominant scoring margins? The online phrase for Warriors fans back then was “must be the 3rd quarter”. They would just blitz teams with a 12-0 run in 90 seconds and the opponent would be down for the count. Steph could go 1 quarter and let the game come to him…and then there would be a “Curry Flurry” that got the crowd going. There is nothing like seeing him explode at home: the 3-PT shot was not what it is today, so if Steph made 4 threes in a quarter and Klay Thompson was also making threes then they would just bury you in an avalanche.

In Game 5 of the 2015 conference semifinals he became the 1st player with 6 3PM and 6 STL in a playoff game, and in 2016 he led the league in STL: everyone knows about his offense, but do you think that he deserves more credit for his defense? Yes: he consistently averages at least 1 SPG and is not a turnstile. He has gotten much stronger as his career has gone on, so he can stand his ground when someone tries to back him down. I am not an authority on defense: as a play-by-play guy I watch the game more passively, but he is not a liability on defense. However, his offense is other-worldly so it is hard to talk about anything else.

In February of 2016 he scored 46 PTS including a 38-footer with 0.6 seconds left in a 3-PT OT win over Oklahoma City: what are your memories of play-by-play broadcaster Mike Breen’s famous “Double Bang” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEMVGHoenXM)? I watched that game at a Chili’s in Palo Alto with a friend who brought me into broadcasting and now works for Golden State: it was 1 of the best regular-season games I have ever seen. OKC was leading for most of the game and Draymond Green/Steve Kerr had a famous shouting match during halftime. Steph had time for another dribble or 2, but if you look at the still-frame of the Thunder bench as he was pulling up, you can see that the opposing players already knew it was going in.

In 2022 he broke Ray Allen’s record for most 3PM in a career, and his 91.1 career FT% is also the best in NBA history: do you have any doubt that he is the greatest shooter in basketball history, and what is his secret? I have no doubt. He is also a more well-rounded player than people realize. I would lean toward the labor he puts into shooting during his warm-up routine. He has worked hard to become a great shooter and has incredible range. It is a monotonous task of slowly getting better, but that is what he did.

He played for Team USA/Coach Steve Kerr at the 2024 Olympics: what did it mean to him to represent his country, and what did it mean to him to win a gold medal? He missed the 2016/2020 Olympics so it was a big line item of his career to check off the list. He did not get off to a great start that summer, but his threes to sink France were a watershed moment for his career.

In addition to all his on-court success, he has shot 74 in a pro golf event, been named 1 of the most influential people in philanthropy by Time magazine, and won an Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) as co-executive producer of “The Queen of Basketball”: is he just 1 of those people who succeeds at everything he does in life? That sounds about right! There was an article a few years ago about how regimented/hyper-focused his offseason is. It takes a special person to do everything he does.

He is a 4-time NBA champion, and 11-time All-Star who was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021, and the highest-paid basketball player ever: how has he remained 1 of the best players in the league while entering his 17th season as 1 of the best players in history who has nothing left to prove to anybody? His conditioning/work ethic/desire to keep playing and winning at the highest level for as long as he can. Kobe had 5 rings so it would be nice to match him, although OKC/Denver/others will make that tough. I have never won a title, but I imagine that every time you win 1 you crave another 1. Michael Jordan won 6 rings, which is the modern standard, and you always want to measure yourself against the GOAT.
