News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Dec 19th

NEWS AND NOTES

-West Virginia held on to beat Iowa State, but it was shockingly difficult.  Iowa State had just one win coming into this one and really hadn’t looked good at all, but late in the game they had the lead and were in a position to win it.

-BYU got what was hands down their biggest win of the year as they handed San Diego State their first loss of the season.  This is the kind of win that elevates a team’s entire profile.  If BYU ends up solidly in the bubble, this win will have a lot to do with why.

-Davidson got a much needed win against Rhode Island in what felt like a really pivotal game for both teams.  Both had played well at times this season, but didn’t have the wins or the record to show for it.  It’s possible that both will be in the discussion at the end of the year, but getting the win yesterday was important.

-Richmond jumped out to a huge lead against Loyola Chicago, and then did something that they almost never do, and that’s give up the lead.  Loyola fought back and was in a position to win the game in the final minute, but just couldn’t get all the way over the hump.  Richmond improves to 6-1 and gets a nice bounce back road win after falling so hard to West Virginia.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-BUTLER VS INDIANA (Crossroads Classic).  Indiana has had way more ups than downs this year, and so far they have the looks of an NCAA Tournament team.  This is just Butler’s third game and while they competed with Villanova earlier in the week they weren’t able to stay with them the whole way.  They could really use a big win on their resume, and beating a Crossroads rival would make it that much better.

-IOWA VS GONZAGA (Sioux Falls, SD).  I think it’s safe to say that this is the highest ranked match-up in the history of the state of South Dakota!!  Gonzaga is back in action after having to shut down, and their first game is a doozy.  Both teams are ranked in the top 3, both are probable protected seeds, potential #1 seeds, and potential Final Four teams, so it should be a fun one!

-LOUISVILLE AT WISCONSIN (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  This game had to be postponed due to COVID, but thankfully it was able to be rescheduled.  Wisky’s only loss was to Milwaukee at the buzzer and they’re coming off a nice win against Loyola Chicago, but this would be the biggest win on their resume so far if they’re able to pull it off.  The same is true for Louisville, who has a couple of good wins against Seton Hall and Western Kentucky, but none as big as this would likely be.

-UNC GREENSBORO AT ELON.  UNCG is a team we expected a lot out of this year, but they’ve struggled so far and may be running out of strikes as far as getting inside the bubble goes.  Elon has gotten off to a nice 3-0 start and looks to extend that today.

-NORTH CAROLINA VS KENTUCKY (CBS Sports Classic).  UNC is improved, but still has some work to do.  Kentucky’s only win was a home buy game in their season opener, so they’ve got more than just a little work to do.

-WESTERN KENTUCKY AT ALABAMA.  This one actually has big tournament implications because both are fighting for spots inside the bubble.  WKU has a few nice wins already, but their opportunities will be limited once conference play starts so adding another one would be invaluable.  Alabama has wins against Providence and a pretty good Furman team, so they’re in decent shape out of the gate, but it’s always good to add another win like this one to the resume.

-PURDUE VS NOTRE DAME (Crossroads Classic).  Purdue is looking really good all of a sudden with a 5-2 record and a win against Ohio State.  Notre Dame has had their struggles, but they did beat Kentucky and played both Ohio State and Duke reasonably close, so they’re capable of winning this if Purdue overlooks them.

-OLE MISS AT DAYTON.  Ole Miss is unbeaten but also untested.  Dayton’s only loss was a close one to a really good SMU team, but they need some meat on their resume as well.

-CHATTANOOGA AT UAB.  Both teams are untested, but both are also unbeaten, so both will be tested today.  This is one that I certainly have circled as an Under the Radar Showcase.

-PORTLAND AT OREGON.  Portland is off to a really good 5-1 start, but they haven’t had to lift as much weight as they’re going to need to lift today in order to get the win.

-BAYLOR AT KANSAS STATE (Big 12).  Baylor is back in action for just the second time in December, and shouldn’t have too much trouble getting the road win in their conference opener.

-FURMAN AT WINTHROP.  Another great UTR game between two rivals who are poised to have big years.  Furman is 5-2 and while they don’t have any huge wins, they did play Cincinnati and Alabama close in their two losses and still have a shot at landing inside the bubble, although their margin for error is small.  Winthrop is unbeaten with some decent wins of their own, but this would probably be their biggest of the season so far if they’re able to pull it off.

-UCLA VS OHIO STATE (CBS Sports Classic).  This is good game between a UCLA team that I think is being undervalued right now, and an Ohio State team who’s looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season and pick up what would be one of their better wins.

-UC SANTA BARBARA AT PEPPERDINE.  This is an intriguing regional match-up between a UCSB team that we think will be a Big West front runner and a Pepperdine team that’s played pretty well this year.

-BUFFALO AT SYRACUSE.  Buffalo should be able to make some noise in the MAC, but Syracuse should be able to make some noise on a national scale.  Their only loss on the season was at Rutgers in a game where they played pretty well, and they are just looking to hold serve tonight.

-ARIZONA AT STANFORD (Pac 12).  Stanford is a modest 3-2 right now, but I still like their team and think they’re capable of having a big season and landing well inside the bubble.  Arizona is unbeaten, but also mostly untested, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do on the road tonight.

-CINCINNATI AT GEORGIA.  Cincinnati has been up and down this year, but their record is mostly down.  While they played well against Xavier and Tennessee, they didn’t win either game, and are coming off a loss to what appears to be a mediocre South Florida team.  Georgia is unbeaten against a very weak schedule, so I won’t really be a believer in them until they…well…win a game like the one they’re playing today.

-COLORADO STATE AT SAINT MARY’S.  Colorado State is a a team that we like out of the Missouri Valley, but early on they’ve had trouble getting onto the court.  This is just their third game of the season, but it’s also a big test and a huge opportunity against a 7-1 Saint Mary’s team that we thought would be rebuilding, but that’s looked really good so far.

-SAINT JOSEPH’S AT VILLANOVA (Big Five).  I almost put this down with the buy games because of how big of a mismatch it is, but it is a rivalry game, their is a lot of heat between the two teams, and it certainly isn’t a buy game.

-UCF AT FLORIDA STATE.  This should be a winnable home game for the Seminoles who are 4-0 on the season and once again look to be good enough to earn a protected seed.

NEWS AND NOTES

-Texas Tech hosted Kansas in a defensive affair between two really good teams that actually appeared to have Big 12 title implications even though it’s still only December.  It was close all throughout with multiple lead changes in the final minute.  Texas Tech had what would have been a game winning shot blocked and Kansas held on to pick up yet another notable win against a ranked team.  Texas Tech has still pretty much only won buy games, but based on what they showed last night they’re good enough to build a strong resume between now and the end.

-Marquette has been more up than down this year, but they were a little down yesterday.  After winning on the road at Creighton, which was their second top ten win of the season, they turned around and lost at home to a Seton Hall team that’s good, but not top ten good like some of the teams that Marquette has played and beaten.

-Saint Louis picked up another notable win by knocking off NC State 80-69.  It was a very close game until the latter part of the second half when SLU began to pull away.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-BYU AT SAN DIEGO STATE.  San Diego State is unbeaten, in the rankings, and has some good wins on their resume already.  BYU is another probable tournament team looking to add a nice win to their resume tonight.

-DRAKE AT SOUTH DAKOTA.  Drake looking to remain unbeaten.

-RICHMOND AT LOYOLA CHICAGO.  Loyola Chicago is coming off a very impressive showing against Wisconsin and will most likely be a front runner in the Missouri Valley and even push for a spot inside the bubble.  A win today against a Richmond team that’s a probable NCAA Tournament team would certainly help.

-DAVIDSON AT RHODE ISLAND (Atlantic Ten).  You kinda get the sense that both of these teams are in desperation mode.  Davidson has played well at times, but lacks any real notable wins and is coming off a damaging loss to Charlotte.  Rhody has also played well at times, but also needs more notable wins on their resume.

-IOWA STATE AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big 12).  It’s a conference mismatch.  West Virginia looks like a probable protected seed and Iowa State looks like a sub-NIT team.

-SANTA CLARA AT SAN JOSE STATE.  Santa Clara hasn’t really been tested, but they are unbeaten and can pick up another road win tonight.

BUY GAMES (or games that might as well be)

-Carver College (nondiv1) @ Georgia State
-North Dakota @ Southern Illinois
-Tennessee Tech @ Tennessee
-Florida A&M @ Georgia Tech
-Montana State @ Washington State

Dixie State (3-0, 2-0 D1) at Southern Utah (4-1, 3-1 D1) – 9:00 PM EST

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Cedar City in Utah for a matchup between the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah and the Dixie State Trailblazers. Dixie State is making their debut in Division I this season and will be in the WAC. Along with a non-D1 win against St. Katherine, DSU also has a home win against North Dakota and a 73-70 win at Denver in their most recent outing. Cameron Gooden led the Trailblazers with 23 points against the Pioneers.

Southern Utah opened their season with a road loss at Loyola Marymount, but they have since won four straight games. Along with a non-D1 win against the same aforementioned St. Katherine, the Thunderbirds won back-to-back games at home against Montana and beat Utah Valley on the road. Tevian Jones leads SUU with 18.8 points a game through the first five games.

NEWS AND NOTES

-Ohio State suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to Purdue.  Ohio State, while good, has a bit of a flimsy resume at the moment with no wins that really jump out at you, whereas Purdue is now 5-2 with a win against…well…Ohio State!

-Duke’s win at Notre Dame was by far their best of the year.  That’s not saying much since their only other wins are buy games, but they actually looked better than they have all season long.  More importantly than the conference road win on paper is that they appear to be improving as a team on the court.

-Pitt has won five straight since dropping their season opener.  They knocked off (a short handed) Miami FL team last night for their first ACC win.  I’m not ready to say that they’re a solid tournament caliber team yet, but I am willing to say they don’t stink nearly as much as I thought on the first day of the season.

-Mercer suffered their first loss of the season as they fell on the road to Georgia State.  Mercer and Georgia State are two good UTR teams who’s only losses are to each other.

-Marshall is another really strong UTR team that had a bit of a surprising loss yesterday.  They fell at home to Toledo.  They trailed for most of the game, but rallied late and came back to force overtime.  They appeared to have all the momentum, but then fell flat in OT and ended up with their first loss of the season.

-Cincinnati fell at home to South Florida.  The Bearcats are young and wildly inconsistent, and while they’ve shown some promise, yesterday’s loss certainly does not help them.

-Oklahoma State went down for the first time this year in a home loss to TCU, which was a bit of a shocker.  Both these teams have looked better than what we thought they’d look like coming into the year.  TCU improves to 6-2 on the year with some decent wins on thier resume.

-SMU handed East Carolina their first loss.  The game was close for about 30 mins, but then SMU pulled away.  They aren’t getting a whole lot of national attention, but I really like this SMU team.

-Arizona State lost at home to UTEP, and nothing against UTEP who now improves to 3-2, but Arizona State just has not looked good in the last week or so.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-KANSAS AT TEXAS TECH (Big 12).  Texas Tech was actually our preseason pick to win the Big 12, and while we expect to see a lot of improvement between now and the end, they haven’t really looked the part so far.  Of course, our opinions of them would change in a big way if they could knock off Kansas tonight.  It should be a good one between two probable protected seeds.

-CREIGHTON AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East).  Creighton has lost a couple of close games to Kansas and Marquette this past week and is looking to get that nasty taste out of their mouths.  This won’t be a cakewalk by any means as the Johnnies have shown quite a bit of life themselves this year, but it is a winnable road game.

-NC STATE AT SAINT LOUIS.  Neither team has a loss, and SLU has a pretty good win against LSU under their belts, but so far they’ve both had limited chances against quality opponents, so it’s good that we get to see them play each other tonight.

-SAN FRANCISCO AT OREGON.  San Fran is a wildly inconsistent team.  They have beaten ranked teams and lost to mid-level UTR teams within a 24 hour span.  They seem to be swinging a little bit over their heads tonight, but they’re still a fun team to watch and the Ducks better not overlook them.

-SETON HALL AT MARQUETTE.  Marquette has two huge wins under their belts against Wisconsin and Creighton.  They have a couple of losses as well, but neither one are damaging and they appear to have a very solid team.  Seton Hall has sputtered a little bit out of the gate, but they’ve won three straight and can really pick up some momentum if they’re able to win tonight.

BUY GAMES (or games that might as well be)

-Le Tourneau @ New Mexico
-Delaware State @ Coastal Carolina

Under The Radar: December 16th

Tonight we feature the SoCon, which has an undefeated Chattanooga team that has some big tests coming up, a Mercer team that has put together some big wins, and a Furman team that has missed out on some opportunities for big wins, but is still really good.

After that we run through the rest of the 21 UTR conferences and discuss how some teams like New Mexico State, UC Santa Barbara, and Vermont have had trouble getting onto the court.  We also discuss how a lot of the better UTR teams had a rough week with Mercer, Ohio U, and Marshall all suffering losses.  We take a look back on the Dakota Classic and how much fun that was.  And, as always, we close with our UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…
