News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Sunday, Dec 6th

NEWS AND NOTES

-Gonzaga vs Baylor was cancelled just hours before it was scheduled to tip.  It’s hard to put a positive spin on that, but I’ll try.  We don’t always get a 1 v 2 match-up during the regular season!  When it happens, it’s special!  But, we’ve NEVER seen a 1 v 2 match-up get cancelled on the day it was supposed to be played!!  NOT EVER!!  WE WITNESSED HISTORY YESTERDAY LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!

(on a side note, CBS reran the 2019 National Championship game instead.  There was a group on twitter that went ballistic over the decision to do that.  Ummm…okay??  I don’t know what the hell else CBS was supposed to do??  They needed to show something, and they couldn’t just send that crew to another part of the country to do another game that they probably didn’t have the rights to broadcast anyway, so I don’t know why so many people thought it was so outrageous that they reran the last national title game.  I didn’t watch the rerun, BTW.  I was watching Toccoa Falls vs The Citadel.  That is not a joke.  That is honestly what I was watching instead of Baylor v Gonzaga).

-Kansas had to sweat out North Dakota State, and actually trailed for much of the second half, but finally got control of the game with less than a minute to go.  NDSU remains winless on the season.

-Arizona struggled against Eastern Washington, who we think will be the Big Sky frontrunner, but managed a bit of a second half comeback and avoided the upset.

-SMU trailed Dayton for most of the game, but kept it close, got the lead late in the game, and ended up getting a nice road win.  I think we will see both of these teams in the NCAA Tournament this March, so this will probably turn out to be an important game that the committee looks at.

-BYU got a nice win over rival Utah State in a game that gave us a really good atmosphere despite having such a limited number of fans.  BYU improves to 5-1 on the season and in pretty good shape overall.

-We also had one of the more surprising UTR losses yesterday – preseason OVC favorite Belmont got sand-blasted at home against Samford. To put this in perspective, Belmont was ranked 227 spots ahead of Samford in KenPom’s rankings prior to yesterday’s game. This was the same Samford team that had lost at home to Alabama A&M a few days earlier.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-VILLANOVA AT TEXAS (Big East/Big 12 Challenge).  Both of these teams have been busy early in the season, and both have picked up some pretty impressive wins already.  This is a fun early season match-up between two top twenty teams that have already proven themselves somewhat, and that are looking for what would be their biggest win of the season up to this point.  We think Nova is a Final Four caliber team, and aren’t quite sure where Texas’s ceiling is yet, so we should learn something about both of them.

-MISSOURI AT WICHITA STATE.  We weren’t expecting either team to do much, but both come into this game without a loss and Mizzou was able to pick up a big win against Oregon, so these two teams could end up exceeding expectations.

-XAVIER AT CINCINNATI.  This game is normally electric (at least with the fans), but it’ll be a totally different feel this year.  Cincinnati has only played one game and they had to sweat out Lipscomb.  Xavier has also had to sweat out some UTR teams, so this would be the biggest win of the season so far both on and off paper for whoever pulls it off. Also noteworthy for the Musketeers – they will have freshmen Colby Jones (originally a projected starter) and CJ Wilcher available for the first time this season; Adam Kunkel (transfer from Belmont) also had his waiver approved to be immediately eligible.

-OKLAHOMA AT TCU (Big 12).  Neither team has a loss yet, and TCU has actually been tested a little bit.  In addition to this being a chance to pick up a nice early season win, it’s also a conference game.

-WEST VIRGINIA AT GEORGETOWN (Big East/Big 12 Challenge).  WVU’s only loss was a hard fought game against Gonzaga.  They’ve already shown they can win away from home and shouldn’t have too much trouble against a Georgetown team that (so far) looks to be among the worst in the Big East.

-PEPPERDINE AT SAN DIEGO STATE.  San Diego State continues to look impressive.  I’m not sure why they aren’t in the rankings yet, but they will be soon enough.  Pepperdine’s only loss was a triple OT game to UCLA, so they look to be much improved and have another shot at an early statement win today.

-KENTUCKY AT GEORGIA TECH.  Kentucky has dropped their last two, but they’ve got a more manageable game today even though it is on the road.  Georgia Tech was a team that we thought would be improved this year, but they’ve struggled out of the gate so far.

-DEPAUL AT IOWA STATE (Big East/Big 12 Challenge).  This is the first game for a DePaul team that had a good start out of the gate a year ago, but fell apart once conference play started.  Winning on the road would be a good way to start the season this year.

-SETON HALL AT PENN STATE.  Seton Hall is off to a rather disappointing 1-3 start.  They’ve played some quality teams, but have yet to look like an NCAA Tournament caliber team.  Penn State is 2-0, but pretty much untested, so this is a chance for us to learn something about them.

-CALIFORNIA AT UCLA (Pac 12).  It’s the conference opener for a UCLA team that finished strong a year ago, but has limped out of the starting gate this year.  Still, this is a conference home game against a rather weak Cal team, so they should be able to win it.

-LOUISIANA TECH AT LSU.  LA Tech is unbeaten, and LSU is a strong tournament caliber tam.  If LA Tech wants to make a statement this is their chance.

-LA SALLE AT ARMY.  Look out for Army who can get to 4-1 with a win!  Their only loss was a close on to Florida.

-UCF AT MICHIGAN.  Both teams come in without a loss, but Michigan appears to be a lot more proven at this point.

-CENTRAL MICHIGAN AT WESTERN ILLINOIS.  A win gets CMU to 3-0

-BUFFALO AT BOWLING GREEN (MAC).  Bowling Green is the preseason favorite to win the MAC.  If they want any shot at all at finishing inside the bubble then they need to dominate the league.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Saturday, December 5th

For today’s News, Notes and Highlighted Games that includes a rare #1-#2 regular season matchupCLICK HERE

Tarleton State (1-1, 0-1 D1) at Abilene Christian (4-0, 3-0 D1) – 8:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day is part of the MTE West Texas Classic – this game features a team new to Division I this season and another team that has recently transitioned up to Division I and has already made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament at the D-I level. Abilene Christian started the season with three wins down at the #BeachBubble in Estero, Florida against East Tennessee State, Omaha and Austin Peay. Kolton Kohl thus far has led the Wildcats with 12.3 points a game and 6 rebounds a game in their first four contests.

The Texans of Tarleton State are new to Division I this season and have joined the ever-changing WAC. They are coached by a familiar name in college hoops (Billy Gillespie) and they did well in their first D1 game before eventually losing on the road at Texas A&M. Montre Gipson played all 40 minutes and had 23 points (including 4-for-5 from behind the arc).

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Dec 5th

UPDATE (12:45 PM, EST) – Baylor-Gonzaga has been postponed after a couple of positive COVID-19 tests with the Gonzaga travel party.

NEWS AND NOTES

-The craziest game (or at least finish) of the day was between Marquette and Wisconsin.  It was close all throughout, there were several lead changes in the final minute, and Marquette picked up the win after missing what would have been a game winning freethrow, but getting the tip-in on the rebound.  Marquette improves to 3-1 and (for now) owns claim to the highest ranked win!  Wisconsin was ranked 4th and no one ranked ahead of them has been beaten!  That will change today when Baylor and Gonzaga play each other, but at least they get to hold claim to it for a little while!

-Oregon bounced back after a sluggish first game to get a nice win over a Seton Hall team, that’s off to kind of a sluggish start themselves.  The Hall has now fallen to 1-3.

-South Dakota State picked up a really nice road win at Bradley.  They’ve got a lot of work to do if they want to end up inside the bubble, but if they dominate their conference like should and can pick up a couple more notable wins they should be in the discussion.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-BAYLOR VS GONZAGA (Indianapolis, IN).  Not only are these the top two ranked teams, both have already beaten highly ranked teams!  Both are proven in addition to being ranked high!  It wouldn’t shock me at all if both of these teams ended up on the #1 line.  It’s a hugely exciting early season game between two teams that have a lot of weapons.  It will be really fun watching them go at each other.

-FURMAN AT CHARLESTON.  Furman really hasn’t been tested yet, and perhaps won’t be today either, but this is still probably their toughest game of the season so far, and it’s a chance for them to pick up a road win and improve to 4-0.

-EASTERN WASHINGTON AT ARIZONA.  Eastern Washington did not look good in their first game, but they’re still probably the Big Sky frontrunner and are potentially dangerous if Arizona overlooks them.

-SMU AT DAYTON.  I’m looking forward to this one.  Both teams are unbeaten and I feel that both are potential/likely tournament teams, so this is a big early season game for both of them.

-WASHINGTON STATE AT COLORADO (Pac 12).  Both teams are unbeaten, and up until now Wazzu has actually looked a lot better than expected.  If they can pick this one up on the road then they will really have our attention.

-NEW MEXICO STATE AT SANTA CLARA.  This is the first div1 opponent for New Mexico State, and it won’t be easy.  Santa Clara is 4-0 and I still think they can be a bit of a dark horse in the WCC this year.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT HOUSTON.  South Carolina hasn’t gotten off to the best start, but I still think they have a ton of potential.  That being said, this is one of the better teams they will face all season.  Houston is ranked 10th in the country, and I think they’ll finish the season ranked in the top ten.

-BYU AT UTAH STATE.  Bee Hive!!!!  BYU did have a somewhat surprising blowout loss to USC, but that’s their only loss of the season and they still look like a really strong team.  Utah State is just 1-2, but a win in a rivalry game like this could really energize things for them.

-UIC AT BALL STATE.  A win for UIC gets them to 4-0 as well as gives them their second road win.

-NORTHERN KENTUCKY AT CHATTANOOGA.  Both teams 2-0

-GEORGIA SOUTHERN AT USC UPSTATE.  Georgia Southern can improve to 3-0.

-RICE AT HOUSTON BAPTIST.  Rice can improve to 4-0 and pick up their second road win.

-Mount Saint Mary’s @ VCU

Under The Radar Game(s) of the Day: Friday, December 4th

For today’s News, Notes and Highlighted Games – CLICK HERE

South Dakota State (2-2) at Bradley (3-1, 2-1 D1) – 8:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

The main card of tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes place in the heart of Illinois – the two-time defending Missouri Valley Tournament champion Bradley Braves host the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State. The Braves ended up winning two of three games in the Xavier Invitational and missed a golden opportunity to get a solid road win against the host Xavier Musketeers after missing the front end of a 1-and-1 with under a second remaining in regulation. In their last game against Oakland, Elijah Childs led Bradley with 16 points and 10 rebounds en route to a 74-60 victory.

South Dakota State is playing a schedule worthy of a potential NCAA Tournament at-large team, but they only managed a single victory in the Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls last week. They did get a win against Utah State in between losses to West Virginia and Saint Mary’s. Most recently, Baylor Scheierman had 23 points in a 71-68 victory at Iowa State.

Crowley’s Ridge College (0-0) at Arkansas State (0-3) – 8:00 PM EST

We also have a bonus game with an old UTR favorite! I cannot confirm if Crowley’s Ridge is still hosting open tryouts for their team (I will leave this to Chad to confirm), but Arkansas State will be looking for their first victory of the season tonight.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Friday, Dec 4th

NEWS AND NOTES

-Winthrop picked up another nice win against Little Rock yesterday to improve to 2-0.  We thought Winthrop would be good by Big South standards, but with two wins against two really good UTR teams, I’m starting to wonder if they’re good enough to play their way inside the bubble.

-UConn picked up a really nice win against a USC team that looks to be good.  Neither of these teams received a whole lot of love from the preseason polls (at least not by top 25 standards), but it wouldn’t shock me at all if we saw both of these teams in the rankings by the end of the year.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-KENT STATE AT VIRGINIA.  Kent State comes in at 1-0 and could make quite a bit of noise in the MAC this year, but they’re probably swinging way over their heads today against a very good Virginia team.

-GEORGIA STATE AT CHARLOTTE.  This would be the second road win for Georgia State and improve them to 3-1 overall if they’re able to pull it off.

-WISCONSIN AT MARQUETTE.  This is always a fun rivalry.  It will have an interesting feel being played without any fans, though.  Wisky is ranked in the top five, so one has to conclude that they are in the hunt for a #1 seed.

-SOUTH DAKOTA STATE AT BRADLEY.  South Dakota State is a solid team, but their margin for error is thin if they want to land inside the bubble, so games like this are big.  Bradley’s only loss on the season was a close one at Xavier, so they have quite a bit of potential as well.

-SETON HALL VS OREGON (Omaha, NE).  This is another good early season match-up between two likely tournament teams, both of whom could use a good early season win right about now.

-SAN FRANCISCO AT CAL POLY.  A win for the Dons gets them to 4-2 on the year, as well as gives them their second road win.

-JACKSONVILLE AT GEORGIA – Both teams unbeaten.

BUY GAMES

-Saint Peter’s @ Maryland – SPC is a potential MAAC frontrunner
-Detroit @ Michigan State
-Kennesaw State @ Creighton
-Bellarmine @ Duke – Welcome do D! Bellarmine!!
-Valparaiso @ Purdue
-Central Arkansas @ Memphis
-Stetson @ Miami FL
-Troy @ Texas Tech
-North Dakota @ Minnesota

Marshall (1-0) at Wright State (0-0) – 7:00 PM (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Dayton, Ohio for the season debut of the Wright State Raiders – they are the consensus favorite to win the Horizon League this season. While they won the regular season title last year, an early upset in the Horizon League Tournament would have relegated them to the NIT were it not for the COVID-19 pandemic. Loudon Love averaged 15.9 points a game and 9.2 rebounds a game last year; he is only 26 rebounds from becoming Wright State’s all-time rebounding leader and less than 100 points away from cracking the school’s Top 10 list of all-time leading scorers.

Even with head coach Dan D’Antoni having to rebuild after Marshall went to the 2018 NCAA Tournament and beat Wichita State in the process, Hillbilly Ball is alive and well. Marshall beat Arkansas State 70-56 thanks to a 17-points from Taevion Kinsey. Also keep an eye on Jarrod West; he had 5 steals against ASU and is only one steal away from tying the all-time steals mark at Marshall.
