NEWS AND NOTES

For the UTR Game of the Day between UNC Wilmington and UNC Asheville – CLICK HERE

-Gonzaga lived up to their #1 ranking by basically leading Kansas from tip to buzzer yesterday.  Kansas did close it up in the second half, but only for a few minutes (literally).  By the end of the game Gonzaga had blown it open and was on cruise control.

-Villanova also picked up an impressive win against a really good Arizona State team, so their resume looks about as good as it possibly could right out of the gate.  And, they get some hardware to go along with it as they win the 2K Empire Classic.

-Boston College knocked off Rhode Island in the 3rd place game of the 2K Empire Classic.  I must say that I was impressed with all four of these teams.  It’s been a long time since BC impressed anyone, but they gave Villanova all they wanted in the first game and beat what looks to be a better than expected Rhode Island team in the second game.  Rhody, despite being 0-2, can still take some things away from this and we may see more wins from them than what most of us were expecting this year.

-Xavier survived a scare from Bradley, but managed to hold on to win after Bradley missed what would have been a game tying freethrow on the front end of a 1-and-1.

-Western Kentucky looked good and picked up another notable win by knocking off Memphis 75-69.  I think WKU belongs in the top 25.  They may not get into the next poll, but I bet we see them in there before the end of the season.  They face West Virginia today, and if they can win that one they will almost assuredly move right into the rankings.

-Northern Iowa desperately needed a bounce back win yesterday against Saint Mary’s, and didn’t get it.  Neither of Northern Iowa’s losses are potentially damaging, but they are two missed opportunities for a team that isn’t likely to have too many more chances at committee-impressing-caliber-wins the rest of the way.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-GONZAGA VS AUBURN (Fort Myers Tip-Off).  Gonzaga is ranked #1 and they totally looked the part yesterday against Kansas in a game they won without really even having to sweat.  Auburn picked up a win in their opener against Saint Joseph’s, but it was slightly less impressive.  Gonzaga should coast today.  For Auburn it’s a chance to see what they can do against the top ranked team with so many new players.

-VIRGINIA VS SAN FRANCISCO (HomeLight Classic).  San Francisco is a program that has improved over the past few years.  Virginia is a Final Four contender.

-OHIO AT ILLINOIS.  This is a buy game, but since I think Ohio is one of the better teams in the MAC we will go ahead and highlight it.  At the very least they are much stronger than Illinois’ first two opponents.

-WESTERN KENTUCKY AT WEST VIRGINIA.  WKU already has two really nice wins on the year against Northern Iowa and Memphis, and probably belongs in the Top 25 whether they can win this game or not.  WVU has also looked good in their first two games, so what we got is a good game between two good teams that already have a couple of good wins.  It’s probably a bigger deal for WKU than for WVU since they get fewer chances in conference play to impress the committee, but either way both teams will be in good shape after this tournament.

-KANSAS VS SAINT JOSPEH’S (For Myers Tip-Off).  The Jayhawks shouldn’t have too much trouble rebounding from their loss to Gonzaga yesterday.

-BOISE STATE AT HOUSTON.  Boise State could make some noise in the Mountain West this year, but we aren’t expecting them to be a big player on the national scene.  Having said that, a win today could totally change that opinion.  This Houston team is ranked in the top 20 and could end up in the top 10 by the end of the season.

-UCLA VS PEPPERDINE (San Diego, CA).  UCLA is looking to bounce back from their loss to San Diego State, and while they should get this one it may not be as easy as some think.  Pepperdine is good enough to beat the Bruins if they overlook them.

-SETON HALL AT LOUISVILLE.  This is a fun early season match-up between two likely tournament teams.  It’s a low risk/high reward game.  The winner gets a good win for their resume, and the loser doesn’t really suffer much of a setback.

-UTAH STATE AT NORTHERN IOWA (Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic).  Both teams come into this game 0-2 and both really need this win.  Both teams have the potential to have big seasons, but starting off 0-3 means they’ll have a steeper up hill climb the rest of the way.

-SOUTH DAKOTA STATE VS SAINT MARY’S (Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic).  These are two teams that look like they have NCAA Tournament potential, but in order to get there they need to win games like this one today.  Since the opportunities are somewhat limited SMC, and very limited for South Dakota State, this game does have a feeling of importance to it.

-UC IRVINE AT SAN DIEGO STATE.  It’s more or less a buy game, and UC Irvine did not look impressive in their opener, but they should improve and be able to make sone noise once they get into Big West play.  San Diego State isn’t in the Top 25 right now, but they likely will be before long.

-UNC GREENSBORO VS LITTLE ROCK (Wade Houston Tip-Off Classic).  Little Rock struggled in their first game, but they did get the win.  I think these are two really good UTR teams, and it will be fun seeing them go against one another.

-VCU VS MEMPHIS (Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic).  VCU wasn’t expected to do much this year, but they’ve looked decent in this tournament, and if they can get a win against Memphis they’ll be on a much better path than what we thought they’d be on (at least for now).  That’s easier said than done, though.  While Memphis lost yesterday, it was to a really good Western Kentucky team, and based on what we’ve seen so far they look like an NCAA Tournament caliber team.

-COLORAD AT KANSAS STATE.  This is an early winnable road game for Colorado

-ABILENE CHRISTIAN VS AUSTIN PEAY (Gulf Coast Showcase).  Both teams are unbeaten

-GEORGE MASON VS BELMONT (Paradise Jam).  Both teams are unbeaten.

-NAVY AT MARYLAND.  Both teams 1-0.

-FRESNO STATE AT PACIFIC.  Both teams 1-0

REVERSE BUY GAME

-New Mexico State @ Arizona Christian (nondiv1) – I can’t think of a time when a div1 team, much less what looks to be an NCAA Tournament caliber div1 team, went on the road to play an NAIA team.  But…this is the COVID world we now live in!

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Friday, November 27th

UNC-Wilmington (0-1) at UNC-Asheville (0-0) – 3:30 PM EST (ESPN+)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes place in Asheville, North Carolina – both teams are part of the Mako Medical Asheville Classic that also includes Western Carolina and Troy. The Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington started their season on Wednesday with a 98-76 loss; despite 27 points from Jaylen Simms, UNC-W would be outscored by 18 points in the 2nd half.

UNC-Asheville is coming off of a season in which they finished 15-16 overall, yet it was an 11-game improvement from a disastrous 2018-19 season that saw them win only 4 games overall. The Bulldogs were picked second in the Big South behind defending champion Winthrop. Juniors DeVon Baker (preseason 1st-team all-conference) and LJ Thorpe (preseason 2nd-team all-conference) are expected to lead the team this season.

Middle Tennessee (0-0) vs. Omaha (0-1) – 11:00 AM EST (FloHoops.com)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Estero, Florida for a matchup in the Gulf Coast Shootout between the Blue Raiders of MTSU and the Omaha Mavericks. MTSU was originally scheduled to play Akron in the tournament opener, but Akron was forced to withdraw from the tournament because of COVID-19. This will be a revamped roster for the Blue Raiders with eight players transferring in from other programs, although they do have a returning player in Tyson Jackson who started 22 games as a freshman last season.

Omaha has already played a game in what is being called the #BeachBubble – unfortunately they came out on the losing end of a 72-66 finish against Austin Peay yesterday. Marlon Ruffin (last year’s Summit League 6th man of the year) had 20 points off the bench for the Mavs, including 14 points in the 2nd half. Matt Pile also had 6 points and a team-high 14 rebounds in yesterday’s game as well.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY!!!  This is probably a Thanksgiving you will always remember, and the reasons for that are due to the circumstances we are dealing with and all wish were over.  Regardless of what you do today I hope you’re able to enjoy part of the holiday, even if that only involves turning on college basketball and tweeting with us.

NEWS AND NOTES

-Let me start with this.  My impression from yesterday is one of pleasant surprise.  There were no fans, and it was different, but for the most part it felt like college basketball.  I was concerned that it wouldn’t, and there may be times this year where it doesn’t, but having the games on yesterday and being on Twitter with the rest of the Hoops HD gang, and bantering back and forth throughout the day really did feel like college basketball.

In addition to that, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of play.  There were no preseason games or scrimmages, and a lot of teams had inconsistent practice schedules or had a hard time getting into their routines, but the games we saw yesterday were well played, especially for it being the first day of the year.  It didn’t look like a bunch of guys on the playground playing pickup ball like I thought it might.  Now, as far as a recap of the games…

-WE’VE ALREADY HAD OUR FIRST QUADRUPLER OF THE SEASON!!  These are rare!!  You’re lucky if you get two or three throughout an entire season.  Some seasons you don’t get any.  But, we’ve already had one!!  Georgia State went in to Georgia Tech picked up the quadruple overtime win against their crosstown foes.  This is a Georgia State team we were high on and felt like they could do quite a bit of damage in the Sun Belt, so it was good to see them pick up the win yesterday against a Georgia Tech team that, despite the loss, is improving.

-We nearly saw a huge upset with Boston College staying right with Villanova, and even having a lead late into the second half.  Nova was my preseason pick to win it all, and I think we were all expecting them to be a Final Four team, whereas is…well…BC, but the Eagles showed us that they may have something this year and are definitely worth paying attention to.

-West Virginia held off a good South Dakota State team and picked up a win that they’ll probably end up getting a lot more credit for than what most people realize once the season is over.

-Arizona State had to sweat it out against a Rhode Island team that’s rebuilding right now, but held on for the win and will face Villanova later today.

-Drake is a team that we felt would be around the middle of the Missouri Valley this year.  They went into Kansas State and picked up a nice early season win.  We all think K State is terrible, but it’s still a nice win for a UTR team that we didn’t think would be anywhere near the top of the standings.

-Saint Francis U is a team that we thought would be around the middle of the Northeast Conference.  They went into Pitt yesterday and picked up the win.  I wish I could say that this is more of a case where STFU deserves credit than it is of Pitt deserving shame, but…no.  Pitt deserves quite a bit of shame!!

-The biggest comeback of the year so far goes to UIC, who trailed at Northern Illinois by more than 20 in the second half, but came back to get the win.

-VCU was a team that we thought would be toward the bottom of the Atlantic Ten this year, but they looked impressive yesterday in a win against Utah State, and have the chance to really make a splash today against West Virginia.

-Memphis ran Saint Mary’s off the floor.  They fell behind early, but that didn’t last long.  The Tigers basically dominated the final 35 minutes of that game and face off against a really good Western Kentucky team today.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-BRADLEY AT XAVIER (Xavier Invitational).  A lot of people are keeping their eyes on Bradley because they’ve won back-to-back MVC Tournaments.  A win today would really get everyone’s attention.  Xavier had no trouble at all with Oakland yesterday.  They weren’t expected to have any trouble, but from what I saw Xavier looked really good.

-WESTERN KENTUCKY VS MEMPHIS (Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic).  Both of these teams looked really impressive yesterday.  Memphis didn’t even sweat Saint Mary’s, and Western Kentucky beat a really good Northern Iowa team.  We knew they were both talented but our big question revolved around would they be able to harness that talent and play together throughout the season.  This is a really good opportunity to add quality wins to the resume, which is especially important for WKU since they don’t see a lot of top level competition once they get into conference play.

-KANSAS VS GONZAGA (Fort Meyers, FL).  Gonzaga is the preseason #1 and Kansas is ranked way up there as well.  Both are Final Four candidates and it’s always fun to see an early season game like this.  These are the kinds of games teams need to play in and win if they want to end up with a #1 seed.

-NEVADA AT NEBRASKA.  We aren’t all that excited about either one of these teams, but both come into this game at 1-0.

-VCU VS WEST VIRGINIA (Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic).  We weren’t all that excited about VCU coming into the season, but they did look really good yesterday in their win against Utah State, and can really make a splash on the national scene if they can beat a really good West Virginia team today.

-AUBURN VS SAINT JOSEPH’S (Fort Meyers Tip Off).  Auburn is expected to be in rebuilding mode this year, but just like anyone else if they can prove themselves if they can string together some early season wins (which they really shouldn’t have any trouble doing today)

-NORTHERN IOWA AT SAINT MARY’S (Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic).  Both teams are coming off losses and looking to rebound.  I think both are capable of making the NCAA Tournament and picking up a win today would be huge.  I don’t want to say this game has a pivotal feel to it because it’s still very early, but it kind of does.  The winner gets a nice win on their resume, and the loser drops down to 0-2.

-BOSTON COLLEGE VS RHODE ISLAND (2K Empire Classic).  BC gave Villanova all they wanted yesterday and actually had a lead late into the second half and were in a position to win the game all the way up until the end.  You gotta feel pretty good about them going forward, especially if they can bounce back from that and pick up a win today.

-UTAH STATE VS SOUTH DAKOTA STATE (Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic).  I’m still really big on this South Dakota State.  They opened things up with a loss yesterday to West Virginia, but that’s hardly a discouraging loss.  If they can finish out this event by picking up a couple of wins they’ll be in good shape moving forward.

-PURDUE VS CLEMSON (Space Coast Challenge).  Both teams are coming off wins yesterday and have the chance to pick up another decent win and jump out to a 2-0 start today.

-VILLANOVA VS ARIZONA STATE (25 Empire Classic).  These are the two teams we were expecting to see, but both had to sweat out their games yesterday in order to get here.  Nova trailed Boston College well into the second half, and Arizona State didn’t exactly blow out Rhody.  But, they both got the wins, which is what matters, and we have yet another good top 25 matchup to look forward to tonight.

HAPPY COLLEGE BASKETBALL SEASON EVERYBODY!!!!!

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-EAST TENNESSEE STATE vs ABILENE CHRISTIAN (Gulf Coast Showcase).  Highlighted because it’s the game that officially kicks off the college basketball season!!

-OLD DOMINION AT MARYLAND.  It’s  buy game, but Old Dominion might have enough of a pulse to make this one semi-interesting

-MEMPHIS VS SAINT MARY’S (Sioux Falls, SD).  This is one of the more intriguing games of the day.  The preseason rankings seem to think that they are both fringe bubble teams at the moment, so this is the kind of win that will likely look good on a resume.  It’s also a chance for us to learn something about both of them.

-NORTH DAKOTA STATE VS NEVADA (Golden Window Classic).  This is a pretty decent game for both of these teams to open the season with.  Both appear to be in a rebuilding phase, but a good quick start to the season can certainly speed up that process.

-TOLEDO VS BRADLEY (Xavier Invitational).  Two quality UTR Teams

-BOWLING GREEN AT MICHIGAN.  This is one of the more compelling games of the day.  Bowling Green appears to have one of their best teams in decades and is the preseason favorite to win the MAC.  They can make a huge national splash and go viral for a day if they can pull off the upset road win at Michigan, who begins the season ranked in the top 25.

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT UT ARLINGTON.  Under normal circumstances this would be an intriguing road game for the Cowboys.  It would still be a semi decent win to start off the season with.

-WESTERN KENTUCKY VS NORTHERN IOWA (Sioux Falls).  These are two of the best UTR teams this year, and both have a shot at making the NCAA Tournament without having to win the conference tournament.  Obviously winning this game would be a huge step toward making that happen.  This one should be fun!

-LIBERTY VS PURDUE (Melbourne FL).  Liberty lost a lot from last year’s team, but this Purdue team is still potentially vulnerable and while they should win they better not sleepwalk through this one.

-VILLANOVA VS BOSTON COLLEGE (Mohegan Sun).  BC looks to be improved this year, but not so much improved that they’re as good as a Villanova team that is a legit Final Four and National Title contender.

-COLORADO STATE VS CALIFORNIA (Corvallis, OR).  We think Colorado State is a potential dark horse in the Mountain West, so it’ll be interesting to see what they can do against a Cal team that’s trying to rebuild itself.

-DALLAS CHRISTIAN (nondiv1) AT TARLETON.  Welcome to Div1 Tarelton!!!  (sort of)

-CHARLESTON SOUTHERN AT NC STATE.  I know this is a buy game, but Charleston Southern is a potentially dangerous team that returns a lot of talent from last year and has a very talented player in Phlandrous Fleming.  NC State should win, but they don’t want to take this game for granted.

-CLEMSON VS MISSISSIPPI STATE (Melbourn, FL).  Mississippi State is in a complete rebuild mode with an overhauled roster and the expectations for them this year are low, but as we’ve seen in the past these early season games and tournaments are chances for teams to get catapulted onto the national scene.  Clemson is trying to scrape together some quality wins of their own before heading into conference play.

-GEORGIA STATE AT GEORGIA TECH.  This is a bit of a Hoops HD special given how many of us (not including myself) think that Georgia Tech is a potential NCAA Tournament team this year.  While I think they will be better, I don’t agree that they are quite yet a tournament team.  I DO think Georgia State is, though!!  This is a really good early season game for both teams that I really wish we could have a full arena for.

-UCLA AT SAN DIEGO STATE.  Another fantastic opening day match up between two likely NCAA Tournament teams!!  Also another game that I really wish could be played in front of a full arena.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Wednesday, November 25th

East Tennessee State (0-0) vs. Abilene Christian (0-0), 11:30 AM EST*

The season debut is finally upon us after Covid-19 brought an abrupt end to the college basketball season back in March – today’s game is the first on the docket involving a pair of Division 1 basketball teams. The Bucs of East Tennessee State enter this season with a completely overhauled roster from last season after graduation and the departure of Steve Forbes (now the head coach at Wake Forest). Serrel Smith Jr. is a transfer from Kansas State who will be immediately eligible for ETSU; he averaged 5.3 points a game and 2.3 rebounds a game for K-State last season.

Abilene Christian is coming off of a season in which they finished 15-5 in the Southland Conference; they finished 4 games behind SFA for the regular season crown. Among their returning players, Joe Pleasant averaged over 11 points a game for the Wildcats last season and was a 3rd-team All-Southland player last season. Today’s game will be the first of three games both teams will play in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Florida.
