NEWS AND NOTES

-Last night was crazy!  We saw five ranked teams lose to teams that aren’t just outside the rankings, but in some cases aren’t really anywhere near the bubble, and a Saint Louis team go down to La Salle.

-Houston went into East Carolina thinking it would be an easy win (and rightfully so) but ended up in a first half battle, then they were behind for most of the second half, and then ECU was actually in control in the latter part of the game.  This certainly doesn’t knock Houston out of being a protected seed, but any hopes for a #1 seed are likely gone.

-Villanova was ranked 3rd and was pretty much a unanimous #1 seed in everyone’s brackets, but they fell to Saint John’s last night 70-59.  The Johnnies pretty much led from tip to buzzer, and had a lead as big as 17 in the second half.  I laughed at this earlier in the week, but the Johnnies really are getting close to the bubble.

-Creighton, who hadn’t looked lights out in their last few games but was still managing to win most of them, didn’t win last night.  They lost at home to a Georgetown team that has been awful all year.  Creighton seems to have a history of limping in the latter part of the season.  Could it be happening again?

-Pittsburgh can’t decide if they want to be good or not.  Whenever I get excited about them they seem to drop several winnable games.  Whenever I get up on them, they knock off a really good team.  Last night they knocked off Virginia Tech 83-72 and looked as good as they have all year.

-Florida, who had seemingly snapped out of whatever funk they were in, went down at home to a South Carolina team that hasn’t shown all that much this year.

-Alabama and Missouri played against unranked teams and won.  That’s normally not notable, but it happened so rarely last night that I felt the need to mention it.

-Saint Louis looked to have a good team coming into the year, but has been hit hard by shutdowns, and after last night’s 82-75 loss to La Salle I’m not all that confident that they are going to pull themselves out of it.

-Seton Hall got a much needed  60-43 win on the road against Providence, and definitely passed the eye test while doing it.

-VCU, who really couldn’t afford a loss, got a huge scare from Rhode Island, and committed a really stupid foul about 50ft from the basket in the final seconds while up by one, but fortunately (for them) Rhody missed the front end of a one-and-one, VCU got the rebound, and time ran out.

-Oklahoma State, who isn’t in the rankings but likely would be if not for the NCAA Tournament ban (which is under appeal) also suffered an upset last night as they fell to TCU 81-78.  TCU’s resume isn’t impressive, but they have played a lot of teams close this year and were finally able to pick up the win.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-OHIO STATE AT IOWA.  I’ve been knocking Iowa for a while about how they don’t have a protected seed caliber win.  Well, this is another chance for them to get one.  Ohio State does have several big wins on their resume and can also pick up another one today and make a case that they belong as high as the #2 line.

-BELMONT AT EASTERN ILLINOIS (Ohio Valley).  It’s possible that there will be room for Belmont inside the bubble if they win out, but anything short of that and they’ll need the auto-bid.

-GONZAGA AT PACIFIC (West Coast).  Gonzaga continues to bowl over everyone they face, and will remain in one of the top two spots so long as they continue to do so.

-STANFORD AT CALIFORNIA (Pac 12).  It’s a rivalry game, and it’s also a game that has as very pivotal feel for Stanford right now.  They’re squarely on the bubble and can’t seem to get safely inside of it.  A loss in a game like this will set them back even more.

-MINNESOTA AT RUTGERS (Big Ten).  Both teams are inside the bubble, but both also have holes in their resumes.  Minnesota needs a road win, and Rutgers just needs to start stringing together wins after hitting a bit of a slump.

-COLORADO STATE AT WYOMING (Mountain West) (Front Range).  We at Hoops HD Love the Front Range!!!  This game is particularly important because Colorado State is straddling the bubble and a road win in a game like this will really help them out.

-WASHINGTON STATE AT OREGON (Pac 12).  Oregon has had a lot of stop and go this season with COVID, and it’s definitely had an effect on them.  They need to hold serve tonight against an improving (but still not NCAA caliber) Wazzu team.

NEWS AND NOTES

-Baylor pretty much led Texas the whole game.  the Longhorns made some good runs in the second half, and even had the lead for a while, but Baylor turned it on down the stretch and ended up pulling away in the final couple of minutes for an 83-69 win.  The debate between Baylor and Gonzaga is an interesting one.  Both have beaten protected seeded caliber teams rather handily, but Baylor’s wins have been true road wins whereas Gonzaga’s have been neutral site wins.  That, and while Gonzaga’s wins against Kansas and Iowa were hugely impressive, it’s now starting to look like Kansas and Iowa aren’t quite as good as Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Texas.  Baylor has the better resume.  I don’t know if they have the better team, but I do think Baylor’s current resume is better.  Of course had they played each other as it had been scheduled there would be nothing to debate.

-Iowa held on to beat Michigan State, but they really had to sweat, and they had to come from behind to do it.  Nevertheless, the Hawkeyes did get the win, but they continue to not look like a protected seed to me.  Speaking of not looking like a protected seed…

-Tennessee was upset by Ole Miss 52-50 last night in a rather unimpressive showing for the Vols.  They haven’t looked good in their last several games.  They’ve been blown out by Florida, suffered another loss to Missouri, barely beat Mississippi State, and have lost to Ole Miss.  Well, they did blow out Kansas in that stretch, but other than that Tennessee hasn’t looked good lately.

-Illinois needed overtime, and it was a sloppy finish to regulation and through most of the overtime, but they got the 75-71 win at Indiana.

-West Virginia had all kinds of problems at Iowa State, which was a bit of a surprise, but they held on for the 76-72 win.

-Purdue, who had really been on a roll, fell at Maryland in a 61-60 thriller.  It wasn’t the best played game you’ve ever seen, but it was exciting, and it was a very important win for a Maryland team that has a good tournament resume, but who also probably needs to inflate their overall record a little bit.

-North Carolina had been on a roll and Clemson had been in a funk, but it was Clemson who got the win last night 63-50, which was a game they kind of needed considering how much they’d been struggling lately.

-Toledo knocked off a pretty good Akron team 91-76 last night and is continuing to roll.  Drake has gotten some much deserved love, and so has Loyola Chicago, but Toledo should be in that conversation as well.  This is a really good team that seems to be getting better as the season goes along.

-USC held on to beat a Stanford team that continues to straddle the bubble.  This was a big opportunity missed for the Cardinal.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-HOUSTON AT EAST CAROLINA (American).  Houston is ranked in the top five, and may even have an outside shot at a #1 seed if everything falls right.  They are certainly good enough to win out.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT FLORIDA (SEC).  The Gators are really on a roll and are looking better and better each time out.  They should be able to hold serve in this one and keep the momentum going.

-LSU AT ALABAMA (SEC).  This is a golden opportunity for an LSU team that we all thought would be good, but hasn’t produced yet.  Winning on the road against top ten Alabama will certainly qualify as “producing.”

-VIRGINIA TECH AT PITTSBURGH (ACC).  After a brief stint where it looked like Pitt was starting to improve, they’ve kind of come back down to Earth.  VA Tech, on the other hand, continues to look impressive.  They’re coming off a nice win against rival Virginia and have won five of their last six.  This is another winnable game for the Hokies.

-KENTUCKY AT MISSOURI (SEC).  Mizzou continues to impress and Kentucky, while showing some signs of improvement and having a ton of talent, continues to look like a sub-NIT team.  Mizzou should be able to hold on at home.

-SETON HALL AT PROVIDENCE (Big East).  Both teams are either right on or outside the bubble, and both need to start stringing together wins.  Both are good, or they’ve at least looked that way at times, but both still have a lot of work to do.

-VCU AT RHODE ISLAND (Atlantic Ten).  We still have VCU outside the bubble, but in the discussion.  They need to keep stinging together wins and holding serve in games like this.

-VILLANOVA AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East).  The Johnnies have won four straight and are starting to sneak up on people.  Today’s game is a very tall order, but if they can get it done then you have to start thinking of them as a team that could make the Tournament.

-VIRGINIA AT NC STATE (ACC).  NC State has dealt with a lot this year, and it doesn’t get any easier tonight as Virginia comes in looking to bounce back from a loss to rival Virginia Tech.  A conference road win is always a good way to do that.

-GEORGETOWN AT CREIGHTON (Big East).  Creighton continues to look like a team that could end up as a protected seed.  They shouldn’t have too much trouble holding serve tonight in what is one of the more winnable conference games they’ll play.

-SMU AT TULSA (American).  SMU is running out of chances.  They basically need to win out against everyone except Houston in order to be solidly in the discussion.  Of course if they end up facing Houston again and beating them that changes everything.

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT TCU (Big 12).  I really like how this Pokes team is playing and if they can win their waiver, they will be in the NCAA Tournament and perhaps even be a protected seed.  TCU has looked good at times and it’s not the easiest place to win, but it is certainly within the Pokes’ capabilities.

-Texas Tech got a huge win over an Oklahoma team that had absolutely been on fire last night in a 57-52 defensive battle.  The Sooners had just 18pts at halftime and while they fought back to make it very close very late in the game, Texas Tech was able to hold on.

-Drake has cracked the rankings, and they had no trouble blowing out Illinois State last night after struggling with them just the day before.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-PURDUE AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  Both teams appear to be safely inside the bubble (despite Maryland’s overall record being a little light) and both are also playing better now than they have at any point this season.  It should be a fun match-up.

-BAYLOR AT TEXAS (Big 12).  I know Texas may not be at full strength, but this still has a clash of the titans type of feel to it.  Both are within reach of #1 seeds, and it’s not out of the question that Baylor could end up with the #1 overall seed.  They have some outstanding true road wins and have the chance to pick up another one tonight.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT IOWA (Big Ten).  Iowa is a solid protected seed (at least that’s the consensus.  I don’t agree with it, but that is the consensus).  They need to hold serve in order to stay there.  Michigan State has been impacted by COVID (to say the least).  They haven’t looked good at all, but they still have a talented team that’s capable of stringing together big wins and getting back into the picture.

-TENNESSEE AT OLE MISS (SEC).  Ole Miss has been tough at times this year, and Tennessee had been slumping prior to their blowout win against Kansas over the weekend.  This is the kind of road game the Vols need to win if they are a top 4 seed caliber team.

-WEST VIRGINIA AT IOWA STATE (Big 12).  Under normal circumstances this is a very tough road game, but we are in a pandemic and Iowa State is uncharacteristically bad this year, so WVU should be able to add another road win to their profile.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT CLEMSON (ACC).  These two teams seem to be going in opposite directions.  North Carolina has won six out of seven after getting off to a lackluster start.  Clemson has been blown out in three of their last four games after getting off to an amazing start.  Both teams could really use this win tonight.

-KANSAS STATE AT KANSAS (Big 12).  Kansas really needs this game moreso for their mental health than for their resume.  K State is pretty bad this year, but Kansas is in a major slump and beating up on an in-state rival may help snap them out of it.

–PENN STATE AT WISCONSIN (Big Ten).  Penn State is just 6-7 on the season, but none of their losses are all that bad, and some of their wins are really good.  If this had been a regular year where they had played a few buy games, everyone would be saying Penn State was a tournament team.  If they can pick up a win tonight against a very good Wisky team they may be saying that anyway.

-ILLINOIS AT INDIANA (Big Ten).  Illinois is coming off a big win against Iowa and comes into this with a lot of momentum, but winning at Indiana won’t be the easiest thing in the world.  A win tonight would really help Indiana’s tournament hopes.

-USC AT STANFORD (Pac 12).  USC is inside the bubble and has been playing really well lately.  This is a chance for them to keep that momentum going.  Stanford is far more desperate as it appears that they are right on the bubble and could really use a win in a game like this right now.

-BYU AT SAN DIEGO (West Coast).  BYU hasn’t looked quite like themselves the last two games.  They did beat Pacific their last time out but they had to sweat to do it.  This should be an easy road win for them, especially if they can get back to their old selves.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT ARKANSAS (SEC).  Arkansas remains on the bubble and obviously needs to hold serve in games like this.
