Hoops HD Staff Bracket (David Dorman) – Jan 10th

Below is David Dorman’s personal staff bracket. If you don’t like it, then please direct all venom toward him!! If you DO like it, then…well…direct venom toward him anyway!!!

COMMENTS FROM DAVID DORMAN:

This is my first bracket of 2025 so let’s break it down.

-My bracket, along with every bracket you will find, is loaded with SEC teams. Pay very close attention to the SEC conference games the rest of the season. It will be very interesting to see what type of conference record it will take in SEC play to garner a tournament bid. With 18 conference games, will 8-10 be good enough? Could going 7-11 get a bid? The answer is maybe because of the unbalanced schedule and where your wins come from. Road wins get more attention than home wins do. Did you have to play the all conference heavy weights on the road? My advice to the SEC teams is hold serve at home and win 1 big road game and you will have a very solid seed in March.

My last 4 teams to get in were:

St. Mary’s
Iowa
Ohio State
Arkansas

Teams that just missed that I could make a case for:

Penn State
Missouri
SMU
Texas

-If Texas would have pulled off the huge comeback win against Auburn earlier this week they would have made my bracket. That would have been the feather in Texas’s cap that would have gone a long way.

-The Longhorns will have plenty of more opportunities but can’t help to think the game against Auburn slipped away in Austin.-

-If Northwestern out of the BIG 10 can string a few wins together they will be right in the mix as they sit squarely on the bubble today.

-Conference season is in full swing. Most teams out of conference games are over and the focus switches to winning a regular season conference title. Piling up wins in January is extremely important. Conference tournament seeding always comes down to 1-2 games here and there. Getting a bye or double bye in conference tournaments keeps your team fresh in March because most teams are not that deep. Most coaches will shorten their rotation at this point in the season and have 7-8 players getting a majority of the minutes.

-Keep an eye on the Missouri Valley Conference this year. It looked like Bradley was going to be the front runner but Drake went to Bradley this week and the Bulldogs walked out with a huge victory.

-How many bids will the Mountain West receive this year is a hot topic these days. Utah State looks great but Boise State, San Diego State and New Mexico will be contenders all season.

-In the Atlantic 10, I thought the Flyers were the team to beat but Dayton has gone cold at the wrong time. Look out for VCU, St. Louis, St. Bonnie and Loyola to make a push in the wide open A-10.

-Enjoy the conference season and the push to March everyone and thanks for always checking out Hoopshd.com

COMMENTS FROM THE STAFF:

From John Stalica

– Oregon had a brief slump at home with losses against UCLA and Illinois, but definitely made up some ground with a win at Ohio State last night. Michigan also scored big with a blowout loss that made Mount Cronin erupt after the game:

– I wonder how close teams like Georgetown and Villanova are to cracking Dorman’s field. Villanova is actually getting hot in the Big East and scored big with a home win against UConn (who also got a little unfairly punished on the seed list with the road loss). Georgetown would have been a shoo-in to make the field after a near-miss at Marquette, but the Hoyas are definitely not going to be a bottom-feeder in 2025.

– St. Bonaventure looked more like a team with a bloated record after a road loss at Saint Louis earlier in the week. Dayton certainly had a bad week, but they’re still going to get credit for their wins against UConn and Marquette. Perhaps Dorman adheres to Chad Sherwood’s First Commandment of good teams winning close games.

– Texas Tech was a team I was not high on last week, but winning at BYU does absolve a few sins on their profile.

From Chad:

– I have very little to argue with on the top half of Dorman’s bracket. I agree with every selection and, other than maybe a one seed line disagreement here and there, pretty much agree with his selections.

– In the preseason, I said Maryland would be an NCAA Tournament team and was almost ridiculed by the rest of the HoopsHD staff. So of course, I now have to disagree with Dorman’s inclusion of the Terps on the 9 line. I actually would have them just barely out of the field today. The 4-point loss last time out at Oregon was not that big of a deal, but losing at Washington was. The Terps only have two wins in the top two tiers and neither is that great of a win (Ohio State home, neutral Villanova).

– I also would have Indiana just barely out of the field. The Hoosiers do not have a bad loss, but have only beaten one team that is even in consideration for a bid, their recent road win at Penn State. I need a few more wins against the top two quadrants to be on board with this team.

– I think UCF is being overlooked by a lot of people. It seemed that everyone liked this team until Kansas beat them by 3 million points, then everyone wrote them off completely. At the end of the day, it was only one game. And the Knights bounced back from it to defeat Colorado a couple nights ago. This team has no bad losses and two Tier 1A wins (Texas A&M home and Texas Tech road). That is better than a lot of other teams right at the cut line.

– The one other team that I would have in is UC-San Diego. I know Dorman chose UC-Irvine as his Big West champion — but I think if the Anteaters did get that auto bid, there is a strong case for a two-big Big West. UCSD is 14-2 and has a VERY good win at Utah State. Head coach Eric Olen should be a candidate for national coach of the year in my opinion. I would personally have the Tritons as the auto bid winner out of the Big West — and probably playing in an 8/9 game right now!

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Friday, Jan 10th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-Oregon picked up a big road win at Ohio State 73-71, which may have been the most exciting contest between these two schools in basketball and football this year! Oregon is now 14-2 with three true road wins, and of the three this was probably the most impressive.

-Washington State, who I had just gotten done praising a few days ago, lost in overtime to Pacific 95-94. They were behind for much of the game, but got the lead in overtime only to lose it when a last second shot went in for the Tigers. Pacific is not a good team, and to lose to them at home will put.a big dent in Wazzu’s profile.

-A couple of surprising Under the Radar results, Lipscomb lost at home to Queens, which was a bit of a shock, and Vermont picked up a big win against UMass Lowell. Vermont is the normal conference frontrunner, but they had looked really sluggish for most of the season so far, so that was a big one yesterday.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-MINNESOTA AT WISCONIN (Big Ten). Wisky can get to 13-3 and stay well positioned if they can hold serve and get this one against their rivals.

-UCLA AT MARYLAND (Big Ten). UCLA has lost three of their last four, and Coach Mick Cronin basically called is team out earlier in the week. This is something he’s done in the past, and when he’s done it, he’s sometimes gotten a response. Maryland is not an easy place to win, but if UCLA were to pull this off it would turn things around for them in a big way and make their resume look a lot better.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Thursday, January 9th

Vermont (8-8, 1-0) at UMass-Lowell (12-4, 1-0) – 6:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day heads to Lowell, Massachusetts for a potential preview of the America East Championship as the Vermont Catamounts pay a visit to the UMass-Lowell River Hawks. Lowell is riding a 7-game winning streak overall, but more importantly picked up a road win against Albany by a 73-69 score to open conference play. Both Quinton Mincey and Max Brooks led the River Hawks with 16 points apiece in the win against UAlbany.

Vermont has had a sluggish start to the season, but the Catamouts have won three of their last four games. They include wins against Miami University at home, a non-D1 win at home and a 20-point win at New Hampshire to open conference play. TJ Hurley led Vermont with 17 points in their win at New Hampshire.

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For our latest Under the Radar Video Podcast – CLICK HERE

-Villanova is on a roll! They held on for what was perhaps a season defining win as they beat UConn 68-66. After a bit of a sluggish start they’ve now won eight of their last nine and have beaten both Cincinnati and Villanova in that stretch. They still have work to do, but they are definitely trending in the right direction.

-Texas A&M got a huge road win at Oklahoma 80-78, which is one of their better wins of the season so far. Oklahoma has now dropped two straight and while they’re still in good shape overall, they are in a bit of a tailspin after the 13-0 start.

-Ole Miss got a really nice road win at Arkansas 76-66. It was just the second true road win of the season for the Rebels and it came against a team that’s typically very tough to beat at home.

-After getting absolutely dump-trucked over the weekend by Kansas, UCF bounced back with a big 75-74 win over Colorado. Colorado has exceeded all expectations, but they still don’t have quite as strong of a profile as they need to start thinking of them as a solid tournament team. But, they’ll certainly have those chances between now and the end.

-George Washington followed up their big blowout win against Dayton with an impressive 75-67 road win at Rhode Island last night. This has sort of come out of nowhere. GW is now suddenly looking like the strongest team in the Atlantic 10.

-Dayton is NOT looking like the strongest team in the Atlantic 10. They lost at UMass 76-72 last night, and are starting to look like a team that doesn’t belong in the NCAA Tournament at all. At the end of November we were singing their praises and saying we thought they could end up as a protected seed. Now it’s looking like they may be headed to the NIT. Playing in the Atlantic 10 means that if they hit the skids and lose several games in a row their profile takes a major hit because they don’t have the opportunities to offset those losses with big time wins late in the year.

-Drake, who had dropped two straight, rebounded in a big way with a 64-57 road win at Bradley. The road to landing inside the bubble is still very narrow for Drake, but last night’s win was one they should get a lot of credit for considering how good Bradley is and that it was a road game.

-Saint Bonaventure, whose bloated record had gotten our attention, fell 73-68 at Saint Louis last night. The Atlantic 10 seems set on eating itself and becoming a one-bid league this year.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-OREGON AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten). Ohio State has been a little inconsistent this year, but when they’ve looked good, they’ve looked REALLY good. Oregon is having a great year, but in their last two games they were blown out by Illinois and barely got by Maryland. Both those games were at home, and this will be a very tough road test tonight.

-PURDUE AT RUTGERS (Big Ten). Purdue is having a great year, but to date they only have one true road win, so this would strengthen their resume a little bit if they’re able to pull this off. Rutgers has lost three of their last four and is in a bit of a tailspin.

-WASHINGTON AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten). The Spartans have been looking really strong and should be able to hold serve in this one.

-VMI AT SAMFORD (SoCon). A win for Samford gets tthem to a very impressive 13-3 on the year.

-PACIFIC AT WASHINGTON STATE (West Coast). I really like this Wazzu team and they can get to 14-3 on the year with a win tonight.

-UC IRVINE AT CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE (Big West). This will be a tough road game for UC Irvine, but they have had a great season, they have a path toward landing inside the bubble, and this is the kind of game they need to be able to win in order for that to happen.

-OREGON STATE AT SANTA CLARA (West Coast). This is a bit of a challenge for Oregon State on the road. If they can pull off the win it will get them to 13-4 on the year.

Under the Radar – Jan 8th

Tonight’s feature conference is the Patriot League. While it looks as though the conference champion will be on their way to Dayton for the First Four in the NCAA Tournament, there is a ton of parity in the league, and a lot of the games have been really exciting so far. Another oddity is that every team has played three games, and the home team has won every time.

From there we run through the other 21 UTR leagues and once again discuss the strength of the Big West and how both UC Irvine and UC San Diego have paths to get inside the bubble. Conference USA had a crazy week with Louisiana Tech starting off 0-2 and UTEP and New Mexico State picking up big wins. McNeese is finally starting to right themselves and has been dominating the Southland since conference play started. Lipscomb is starting to establish themselves in the Atlantic Sun and could be a dangerous team come March. We discuss all that, and more! And, as we do every week, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Under the Radar Game(s) of the Day – Wednesday, January 8th

Northern Kentucky (9-7, 4-1) at Youngstown State (10-6, 5-1) – 6:30 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight features a twin bill of a pair of Horizon League matchups that will help to clear up the logjam at the top of the league standings. NKU is currently on a 2-game winning streak that includes a double-digit OT comeback at home against Purdue-Fort Wayne. Youngstown State won their first five games in conference play and were threatening to turn the conference race into a runaway, but a 90-81 loss at Purdue-Fort Wayne has left the Penguins only a half-game ahead of the Norse and Cleveland State in the Horizon League standings.

Milwaukee (11-5, 4-1) at Purdue-Fort Wayne (11-6, 4-2) – 7:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Fort Wayne is in the midst of a 3-game homestand that began with a win against Youngstown State; after tonight’s game the Mastodons will close out their homestand with a game against Detroit-Mercy. Milwaukee will wrap up a 3-game roadtrip tonight after gaining a split against the Michigan schools (W against Detroit-Mercy, L against Oakland). The Panthers will soon have a 3-game homestand that includes a matchup against Youngstown State.
