Under the Radar Game of the Day – Wednesday, January 20

Abilene Christian at Sam Houston State, 9:30 PM Eastern, espn+

The Under the Radar Game of the Day takes us to Huntsville, Texas this evening for a huge matchup at the top of the Southland standings.  Abilene Christian is 3-0 so far in Southland play and 11-2 overall while host Sam Houston State is 5-0 in conference play and 11-5 overall.  Depending on what Stephen F Austin (4-0 in conference) does tonight, the winner of this game has a chance to be in sole possession of first place tomorrow morning.

Abilene Christian has the best metrics of any Southland team so far this year, sitting at 73 in the NET entering play tonight.  The Wildcats are led by Coryon Mason and Kolton Kohl, both of whom are averaging double-digits in scoring, and Joe Pleasant, the team’s top rebounder and third leading scorer.  However, the key for the Wildcats is defense, as they enter the game with the nation’s best turnover margin and fourth best scoring defense, only allowing 57.3 points per game.

Sam Houston State is led by guard Zach Nutall, the team’s top scorer (20.4 points per game) and rebounder (5.5 per game).  Nutall has already won Southland Player of the Week honors twice this season, including last week when he passed the career 1000 point scoring mark during a 33 point, 9 rebound effort against Houston Baptist.  The Bearkats will need Nutall to find a way to score big against ACU’s tough defense if they want to win the game and post a claim at being the top team in the conference this year.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Wednesday, Jan 20th

NEWS AND NOTES

-Villanova got back onto the court for the first time in almost a month, and did not have the easiest time with Seton Hall.  They held on for a 76-74 win due to some questionable late foul calls in the game, but it was still a well earned win.  Seton Hall seems to be leading the nation in close losses to good teams.

-Now for a loss that WASN’T close.  After looking rather pedestrian for the past several weeks (and understandably so) Florida came to life and absolutely blew 6th ranked Tennessee off the floor.  It was surreal!  If the Gators are back, they didn’t phase in their comeback.  They went from zero to ten in a hurry!

-Purdue has gotten better and better as the season has gone along, and they got what was perhaps their biggest win of the year last night at Ohio State.  It’s the fourth straight win for the Boilers after a modest 7-5 start.  They have a real tough test coming up against a Michigan team that had cracked a few peoples’ top five.

-Alabama continues to blow good teams off the court.  I’m not sure where this came from.  We thought the Tide would have a good year and perhaps make the NCAA Tournament.  We didn’t see them being a legit top ten team, but that’s exactly what they’ve looked like these past few weeks.  They absolutely took LSU apart last night in a 30pt win that was probably even more lopsided than that.

-USC, who we had been rightfully praising for the past couple of weeks, really stubbed their toes last night with a loss to Oregon State.  Oregon State isn’t great by any stretch of the imagination, but they also aren’t nearly as bad as we thought they’d be.  They are now 7-5 on the year and 3-3 in Pac 12 play.

-Pitt held off Duke to improve to 8-2 on the year and 4-1 in the ACC.  Had it not been for their season opening loss to Saint Francis U, Pitt would probably be in a lot of peoples’ top 25 by now.  They may be headed their anyway.  Duke isn’t as good as they normally are, but the string of wins that Pitt has put together has been impressive.

-Utah State picked up another impressive win as they decisively beat Colorado State 83-64.  Colorado State looked like they were arguably a bubble team, and Utah State just trucked them.  The Aggies didn’t play the toughest OOC schedule, but if you look at them on the court, especially in the last week or so, they’ve certainly passed the so-called eye-test.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-WINTHROP AT PRESBYTARIAN (Big South).  Winthrop is looking to remain undefeated on the season.

-VCU AT SAINT BONAVENTURE (Atlantic Ten).  This is a big game between two teams that we think could be tournament caliber teams, but haven’t had very many opportunities to show it (especially the Bonnies).  That makes this a big game today.

-PROVIDENCE AT CREIGHTON (Big East).  Providence appears to be a lot better than their record, so even though Creighton is ranked 11th they better not overlook the Friars.  Providence is looking to string together wins to shore up their resume, and Creighton is looking to end up as a protected seed.

-CLEMSON AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  Clemson had their doors blown off against Virginia and needs to wash that nasty taste out of their mouths, but they are still having a fantastic year overall.  Still, GA Tech has shown signs of life this year too, so Clemson can’t just sleepwalk through this one.

-FURMAN AT VMI (SoCon).  I still think there may be room for Furman inside the bubble if they can win out, but anything shorter than that will make it tough, and VMI can be hard to play against.

-TULSA AT HOUSTON (American).  Tulsa pulled the big upset the first time these two met.  It’s Houston’s only loss and they will be looking to bounce back from it.  As amazing as the first one was, if Tulsa can do it again it will be the biggest diamond on their resume and their strongest case for a bid.

-NORTHWESTERN AT WISCONSIN (Big Ten).  Northwestern keeps slipping, and pretty soon I think they will be out of the picture.  It’s not that losing at Wisky is all that bad.  Wisky is a very likely protected seed.  But losing six in a row is certainly bad.

-COLORADO AT WASHINGTON (Pac 12).  Colorado continues to have a solid year, they can pick up another road win, another conference win, and improve to 12-3 on the year with a win tonight.

-FRESNO STATE AT BOISE STATE (Mountain West).  Boise State looks to be safely inside the bubble for now and will remain there so long as they can keep holding serve.

-AUBURN AT ARKANSAS (SEC).  Arkansas has a respectable 10-4 record, but there isn’t anything on their resume to get all that excited about, so they need to keep holding serve against non-tournament caliber teams if they want any chance of staying in the picture.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Akron at Bowling Green

Akron at Bowling Green, 7:00 PM Eastern, espn+

With our colleague John Stalica having to step away for a bit, Chad is back at the helm of one of his original job duties here at HoopsHD — the Under the Radar Game of the Day!  To start this return to action, our game today is a very important battle at the top of the MAC standings between Akron (5-3, 3-2) and Bowling Green (10-3, 6-1).

The Akron Zips are coming off of a thrilling overtime win over Toledo this past weekend, when senior Maishe Dailey drilled a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left in OT to knock Toledo out of sole possession of first place in the conference standings.  Although Dailey was the hero this past weekend, the player to watch on the Zips all season long ahs been Loren Cristian Jackson.  Jackson is averaging a team and conference high 22.6 points and 7.0 assists per game this season.  In fact, Jackson has already been named Lute Olsen National Player of the Week twice this season.

Bowling Green entered this season as one of the favorites to win the MAC.  They looked very strong in their last game out, a 10-point road win at Buffalo.  Justin Turner is the player to watch out for tonight, as he leads the team with 21 points and 5.3 assist per game, though Daeqwon Plowden and Trae Diggs are also averaging double digits in points.  Tonight’s game has all the earmarks of a fun contest, involving a matchup of two of the best Under the Radar guards in the entire nation.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For the latest Hoops HD Report – CLICK HERE

-It was a pretty uneventful night.  Florida State got an impressive win at Louisville, UConn blew a late lead against Saint John’s, and in the game of the night Baylor sprinted out to a big lead against Kansas and never really looked back.  Kansas did play well in the second half and closed the gap a little bit, but Baylor was never not in control

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-PURDUE AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten).  Ohio State is really on a roll right now.  They are stringing together wins and climbing the rankings.  They face a Purdue team that’s also been playing well and help solidify their spot inside the bubble if they’re able to win tonight.

-KANSAS STATE AT OKLAHOMA (Big 12).  Oklahoma is looking like they’re more likely than not a tournament team, but they need to be able to hold serve tonight.

-TENNESSEE AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Tennessee continues to look like a solid protected seed and Florida continues to struggle.  One team is gunning for the #1 line and the other is trying to pull themselves out of a tailspin.

-MARYLAND AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  Maryland had a huge week last week and can really make some noise if they can knock off a top ten Michigan team on the road tonight.  It’s easier said than done, and a loss certainly won’t set the Terps back, but a win would be another giant step forward.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT MISSOURI (SEC).  South Carolina is a team that I think has a ton of potential, but has just been snake bit with cancellations and postponements due to COVID and can’t seem to get into their rhythm.  Missouri continues to hang on to a top 20 ranking and should be able to hold serve tonight.

-USC AT OREGON STATE (Pac 12).  USC has had a really good season and shouldn’t have too much trouble picking up another road win tonight.

-MIAMI FL AT SYRACUSE (ACC).  Both of these teams are on the outside looking in, and both really need to win this game tonight to avoid sliding even further back.

-WINTHROP AT PRESBYTERIAN (Big South).  Winthrop can improve to 14-0 with a win tonight.

-PENN STATE AT ILLINOIS (Big Ten).  Penn State is probably better than what their resume indicates, but they’re still not anywhere close to the tournament and this is a game that Illinois can’t afford to lose if they want to demonstrate that they belong in the discussion for a protected seed (which right now, I don’t think they do).

-SETON HALL AT VILLANOVA (Big East).  Villanova is still believed to be a Final Four candidate, but due to cancellations and postponements this is their first game since before Christmas, and it’s against a Seton Hall team that also looks like a solid tournament team and is trying to play their way inside the bubble.

-ALABAMA AT LSU (SEC).  Alabama is looking like a protected seed.  No one in the SEC other than perhaps Tennessee (who the Tide beat) has looked better than they have.  They’re ranked in the teens, as they should be.  They have a tough road test tonight against an LSU team who we think is good, but who hasn’t had too many opportunities at big wins, so this game is definitely worth watching.

-DUKE AT PITTSBURGH (ACC).  Duke needs to string together some wins just to get back inside the bubble.  Pitt seems to be getting better and better as the season progresses.  I think they’re right on the bubble right now and can continue to strengthen their resume if they continue to string together wins.

-COLORADO STATE AT UTAH STATE (Mountain West).  Both of these teams are having good years and are in the discussion for at-large bids, which makes this a big game tonight.

The Hoops HD Report: January 18th

Chad is joined by Joby, Jon, and David and they review a huge week for Virginia, who is suddenly the hottest team in the ACC.  Virginia Tech also keeps winning, and isn’t too far behind them, while both Duke and North Carolina are way off the map right now.  UCLA and USC look like the two teams to beat in the Pac 12.  The Big 12 looks fantastic with Baylor and Kansas (who are playing tonight), Texas Tech’s big week, and Oklahoma State is also making a lot of noise.  Utah State in the Mountain West had a big week with two wins over San Diego State, and Boise State is also looking really good.   Alabama is probably the hottest team in the SEC right now, while Kentucky’s struggles continue.  We talk about all that, and more.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Staff Bracket (From the Puppet): Monday, Jan 18th

Just so everyone knows what they are looking at…

The STAFF BRACKETS at Hoops HD are NOT an attempt to guess the Selection Committee.  Jon Teitel is our Selection Committee Guessing Expert.  If anyone else tried to do it as accurately as he does it, we would fail, so we don’t even try.  This is merely what WE PERSONALLY THINK the NCAA Tournament should look like if the season ended TODAY.

Below are some of my notes on the bracket, and below that are some comments from other staff members.  If any of them disagree with anything I have done, they are wrong!!

OTHERS CONSIDERED: Michigan State, Colorado State, Loyola Chicago, VCU, Tulsa, North Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, Indiana, SMU, Duke, Syracuse, UAB, Missouri State

NOTES FROM DAVID

-I’ll start with Illinois on the #7 line.  Please notice that no one that they have beaten is seeded ahead of them.  In fact their best win is arguably at home against Minnesota, and I say arguably because Minney has yet to win a road game.  Penn State and Northwestern are nice road wins, but relatively speaking a #7 seed is a nice seed.  They have lost to every team that they’ve played that’s safely inside the bubble who’s actually won a road game.  It may actually be easier to argue that they shouldn’t even be as good as a #7 seed as it is to argue that they should be better than a #7 seed.

-Oklahoma State is appealing their NCAA Tournament ban, and while a case is under appeal a team is actually eligible to compete, so as of now they are eligible for our brackets.  They have a really solid body of work with wins at Texas Tech and against Kansas, and some other notable road wins against Wichita State and Marquette.  That seems protected seed caliber to me!

-It is very rare that half of a conference ever ended up as protected seeds, but I’ve got half the Big 12 on the top four lines.

-Marquette is the most schizophrenic team out there these days.  They are in my field because of their two monster wins against Creighton and Wisconsin, and while they do have a lot of losses, none of them are terrible.

-It’s tough to know for sure what to do with Saint Bonaventure because of so few OOC games, but I like what I’ve seen so far, and this bracket is all about me!  So…they are in!

OTHER STAFF COMMENTS/CRITICISMS:

FROM CHAD:

– I will start with Villanova.  I get it that the reason they have not played since December 23 is not their fault — but in the end, you get a protected seed, and even a #1 seed, by beating teams.  The win at Texas is great, but beyond that one win, all the Wildcats have done is win at a good but not great Marquette team.  Oh, and they lost to Virginia Tech.  By the eye test, from what we saw, I think this is one of the best 4 teams in the nation.  But, I cannot justify a 1 seed for a team that is not playing while others (like Kansas and Iowa) are playing and winning games against very good teams.  2-1 against the top two quadrants simply is not there.  I would probably have them as low as the 3 line right now, in fact.

– Speaking of Virginia Tech, I think David is smoking something when he puts them on the 4 line.  Yes, they beat Villanova — but that is all they have really done.  The Hokies have one true road win and it was only at Wake Forest.  I get that they beat Duke this week, but that is a Tier 3 win — I don’t give it much stock unless and until the Blue Devils turn their season around.  In other words, the Hokies are about 4 lines too high.

– I agree with David that Maryland belongs inn a 7/10 game — just as the 10 seed and not the 7.  Wins at Illinois and Wisconsin are great (though according to David, Illinois is nothing special so that should not count as much).  However, the Terps are only one game over .500 against D1 competition, and 3 games under .500 in conference.  The schedule they have played and will continue to play is intense, but in the end, you don’t get to wear white in the first round by losing a ton of games.  Maryland belongs in the field, just not nearly this high.

– Of course, I need to address Illinois.  Unlike Maryland, for example, the Illini have a decent overall record and are 5-3 in the Big Ten.  This includes 4 wins over teams that are either in the field or at least on the bubble.  That is more than, oh say…1 seed Villanova!   I am not saying that Illinois needs to be a protected seed (though personally I would have them as such), but putting them on the 7 line is just plain stupid.  #StupidPuppet

– Utah State.  Sweeping a San Diego State team (at home) that is proving that they are not nearly as good as we thought they would be and doing absolutely nothing else puts you in the board for consideration.  It does not put you in the field.  Giving them a 10 seed is a joke.  They would be my 5th team out right now.

– Apparently beating a Kentucky team that isn’t even under consideration and losing at home to Hofstra is good enough to put Richmond in the field.  The Spiders would be on my board, but are not close to the field at all.  The Bonnies, on the other hand, I would not have in, but I can live with David’s reasoning, as they are one of the toughest teams to evaluate right now.  I won’t complain about that pick even if I would not have chosen them myself.

– Now let’s go to my list of teams that did not even merit consideration (and I personally have 13 teams beyond the field at least Under Consideration):  Northwestern.  Seriously, this pick is just plain awful.   Teams that belong in before the Wildcats (and Utah State and Richmond as well): Michigan State, Colorado State, Tulsa, North Carolina, TCU, Indiana, Providence.  Seriously — how can you put Northwestern in and not even have TCU on the Board???

– Among the single bid leagues, both Georgia State and Northeastern are way under-seeded.  But, at this point, I am shocked David did not add an Ivy League team in as well, because he clearly has no idea what is going on this season in college basketball.

– All in all, I would say that David did a solid job this week, but that would be an utter and complete lie.  This field sucks.  Please ignore it.  And delete him from your list of Twitter account you follow.
