It was an exciting day in the Mountain West as Wyoming pulled off another big upset to advance to the semifinals.  Utah State kept their NCAA Tournament hopes alive as they came from behind to beat New Mexico.  It was also an exciting night in the Patriot League with all four games being close, but with chalk holding.  Chalk also held (for the most part) in the Big South, so we’ve got some really exciting games coming up on Friday.  We also had a computer problem at the end which completely ruined the closeout of the show!  Check out all the action listed in the brackets below.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Hoops HD BRACKET RUNDOWN: March 5th

The show was recorded at 9pm on Thursday, March 5th, and no games that went final after that time were considered.

This Bracket Reveal is not an attempt to guess the actual Selection Committee, but rather what we as a committee believe the tournament should look like if the season ended today.

Each member of the panel submitted a seedlist.  Those seedlists were cross country scored for a master seedlist, which was placed into a bracket, and we see that bracket revealed on the show.  We are all seeing the final results for the first time, and we debate, discuss, and assess each team as we go through it line by line.  See who the #1 seeds are, which teams we fell have a shot at moving up to the #1 line, who the protected seeds are, who’s inside the bubble, on the bubble, and who just missed.

Below is final bracket, but do not look at it until you’ve watched the show!!!

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

All-Access at the CAA Tournament: HoopsHD interviews Hofstra dance team captain Marissa Cannella

Conference tournaments are about basketball but also so much more: the fans, bands, cheerleaders, etc. The CAA Tournament is taking place in Washington, DC this weekend and we could not be more excited to be there in person! HoopsHD will be covering all of the angles so you can look forward to a cascade of coverage in the days ahead. Jon Teitel continues our series with Hofstra dance team captain Marissa Cannella as she talked about her post-graduate plan and how proud she is of the Pride.

You grew up in New York: what made you choose Hofstra? I am from Wantagh on Long Island and knew that I wanted to stay close to home. I started following Hofstra on Instagram as a junior in high school and once I made the team it made my decision really easy.

You graduate in a couple of months: what is your post-graduation plan? Earlier this week I got accepted into the speech pathology graduate program at Hofstra, which is a 2-year Masters’ degree.

What was the atmosphere like on campus this week now that Hofstra is the top seed in the conference tourney? The atmosphere has been great: everyone is excited to see how the team does in DC. We hope they can win it all because they deserve it.

How did you 1st get into dancing, and what is the best part of being on the dance team? I have been dancing since age 2 and it has been a part of my life ever since then. When I came to a few clinics here and saw how intense the environment was it made me want to improve. Being on the team for the past 4 years has impacted me so much: I do not know where I would be without my teammates/coaches.

Will we see your group doing anything extra-special for the CAA Tournament this weekend? Our 1st game is on Sunday, where we will perform 1 of our routines, and if we keep winning then we will keep supporting the team by cheering from the sideline.

What do you think the role of a college dance team is today, and how has it changed over time? We attend many events on campus and are a big presence at Hofstra. We have been to many sporting events and have had a huge impact at events for our new students. I think that college dance these days is huge due to the national competition every January in Florida, which is a great experience. We just had alumni day and there were some women from the 1980s who told us about the dance competitions on campus that they used to participate in.

How does your school decide who gets to go to DC, and what does it mean to you to see your group doing their thing in front of a national TV audience? This year it was based on seniority: the more years you have on the team, the higher priority you get to travel. We have 10 dancers going to DC: 1 freshman and the rest are a mix of sophomores/juniors/seniors. It is a huge opportunity for both us and the basketball team so we are all excited.

What has been your favorite moment so far this season: beating UCLA, winning 9 of your last 10 games, Senior Night, other? The Senior Game last week was really good. The atmosphere at home games has been great all year long: there have been many sell-outs with all of our fans going crazy.

Hofstra has not made the NCAA tourney since 2001: how big a deal would it be if this is the year that you break the streak? It would be a huge deal so the university would go crazy! So many of us on the dance team would like to go but our coach told us that only 6 of us can go to DC. I hope they make it to the NCAA tourney.

Any predictions for this weekend? Hofstra is in 1st place so I think they can just play their game, take it 1 game at a time, and then win the championship!

All-Access at the CAA Tournament: HoopsHD interviews Charleston cheerleading team captain Mackenzie Lowrie

Jon Teitel starts us off by chatting with Charleston cheerleading team captain Mackenzie Lowrie about winning the CAA tourney in 2018 and her predictions for the Cougars’ opening game vs. Delaware on Sunday.

You grew up in South Carolina: what made you choose Charleston? I grew up about 2 hours away from Charleston. It was always the place where my friends and I would visit on day trips, weekend trips, or sometimes for our spring break. There are so many fun things to do in Charleston that I always planned on attending The College. I was comfortable in this beautiful city and it is not too far from my family. I have enjoyed my time here so much and leaving will be very bittersweet.

How did you 1st get into cheerleading, and what is the best part? In middle school all of my friends were trying out so I did as well. I made the team during my 7th grade year and have been cheering ever since! I have grown to have so much love for this sport and would encourage anyone interested to give it a try. There are so many amazing parts to cheerleading but I would have to say that my favorite part is “stunting”, which is the part where we lift and toss athletes in the air. This is my favorite because you can be creative with it. As a team we are constantly learning new stunts and trying new things: it has such an adrenaline rush to it.

What is the atmosphere like on campus this week now that the conference tournament is just days away? The energy is high right now! We just hosted our last home basketball game and TD Arena was sold out. Students/faculty/staff are excited to see where our team can go from here. Since the College of Charleston does not have a football team, basketball is our main sport. The campus community gets really involved, which only makes the game day atmosphere that much more exciting. The tournament has been hosted in North Charleston over the past few years and has always been filled with Cougar fans. I am looking forward to seeing alumni and fans who make the trip up to DC to support the team.

You are captain of the team: what are some of the responsibilities involved in that? Being the captain is such an honor. I cannot thank our head coach (Samantha Pairet) enough for giving me this opportunity. Being captain means that I have to set a good example for the rest of my team. I have to be organized and am constantly trying to improve our team and encourage my teammates. Our program is smaller than most Division I colleges but we have seen so many talented athletes come our way during the past few years. It is great to see where this program can go and I am so grateful to be a part of the building process.

Will we see your group doing anything extra-special for the CAA Tournament this weekend? For the tournament we are only bringing 6 members of our team. This means these 6 are highly-skilled, talented athletes. We definitely plan on displaying these skills and hopefully bringing some new ones to the court so fans should keep an eye out to see what we have prepared for them!

How does your school decide who gets to go to DC, and what does it mean to you to see your group doing their thing in front of a national TV audience? The selection process to go on this trip is based on a few things: seniority, skill, and dedication. No single 1 of these things outweighs the other. This round we are bringing our 3 seniors, 1 junior, and 2 freshmen. The squad we are bringing to DC will represent this school so well and we are all so excited to travel together! Like any other sport it is an honor to be on national TV. We plan on bringing our best skills to the court and want to give the crowd another reason to make the trip to watch the Cougars.

What are your memories of beating Northeastern in OT to win the 2018 CAA Tournament and then heading to San Diego for the NCAA Tournament (where you only lost by 4 PTS to Auburn)? I was on the team 2 years ago for these monumental moments! In 2018 the CAA tournament was in North Charleston so our entire team was able to attend. That game against Northeastern was insane. Both the Cougars and the Huskies were very talented but we came out on top in OT. I cannot say I was surprised because that year the Cougars had an undefeated season at home in TD Arena, which gave us such good energy going into the CAA Tournament. We had a watch party in the arena with fans, spirit teams, and students on Selection Sunday to see where the team would traveling to for March Madness a few days later. When the reporters announced that CofC would be playing their first game in San Diego everyone went crazy! San Diego is such a fun city and it gave the team even more energy to travel with. Unfortunately, I did not get to travel to San Diego but as a freshman I was so excited for my fellow teammates who were able to go. Some friends and I got together for the game and had a watch party in Charleston. It was such a close game against Auburn. I was just proud of the Cougars because win or lose we played one heck of a season.

What do you think the role of a college cheerleader is today, and how has it changed over time? There are many roles that come along with being a cheerleader. Not only do you have to be a talented, dedicated athlete but you also must be a great leader, a good teammate, have great people skills, be motivated, and be able to make others happy. Being a cheerleader requires great talent but the talent never comes easy. It takes many hours of practicing/perfecting skills. Many people who are not wrapped up in the cheerleading world do not realize everything that goes into it. It is so much more than cheering on a sports team while standing on the sidelines. This is where I think cheerleading has really evolved over time. This sport was once just on the sidelines of sporting events but has quickly evolved into a competition. Teams, including The College of Charleston, now compete against one another to see whose skill level is elite. At all different levels of cheerleading, whether it be middle school/high school/collegiate/all-star, teams push themselves to limits they did not know existed the previous season. Being a cheerleader involves creativity and having a passion for the sport. There is not much recognition for cheerleading, therefore the athletes must have a passion that does not need recognition. We do this because we love it!

What has been your favorite moment so far this season: beating Providence in November, your 6-game winning streak in the middle of the season, Senior Night, other? My favorite moment from this season was from a game last week. On February 27th the Cougars hosted a game against Delaware. We had just come back from having 2 road games where we fell short each time. The energy in TD Arena was so high! Our men’s team feeds off of the crowd and the fans know that. The arena was not sold out but it sure felt like it was. Everyone was on their feet yelling the chants and getting involved with the game. It was so loud that the chants echoed all over the arena. Being on the sidelines and hearing the fans is unlike anything else. The Cougars beat Delaware that night for the second time this season and it felt so great!

You are getting married in May: how goes the wedding planning? It is going well! I have done everything myself without the help of a wedding planner so it has been a lot of work but my fiancé and I are so excited! Balancing this AND school AND cheer has not always been easy but it is all so worth it in the end.

Any predictions for Sunday afternoon vs. Delaware (whom your school has already beaten twice this season)?  Considering we have already beat Delaware twice I think it safe to say that the odds are in our favor! I have no doubt that the Cougars can surpass them skill-wise but I think that the crowd plays a huge role in their success. If the crowd is full of energy then our team will feed off that. However, no matter how the game turns out I am so proud of this team because they always work hard and put on a show. I cannot wait to see how this tournament goes: as always, Go Cougars!

SURVIVAL BOARD UPDATE!!

Cal Poly (Big West): out with a loss at Long Beach AND a win by Cal State-Fullerton at UCSB.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (SWAC): Despite being off tonight, the Golden Lions are out if Alabama A&M wins at home against Grambling.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day between Northern Colorado and Montana – CLICK HERE

-We thought Dayton would be tested at Rhode Island yesterday because of how well Rhody has played at home and how much they needed the win.  We were wrong.  Dayton absolutely crushed them.  Dayton may not have played a slew of ranked teams this season, but their Final Four chances are not remote.

-Florida State and Kansas both had scares last night, but both held on to win against teams that are outside the bubble.

-Villanova picked up a huge road win at Seton Hall, which pulls within a game of first place with just one game to go, and puts another huge win on their resume.  There isn’t anything unusual about this, but Villanova, Seton Hall, and Creighton have all helped out each others’ resumes by winning games on the road against each other.

-Auburn fell at home to Texas A&M.  If you haven’t been questioning if they should be a protected seed, then you should be questioning it now.

-Providence continues to roll as they knocked off a Xavier team (which had also been rolling) at home last night.  I think Providence is now inside the bubble.  If they aren’t, then they should be.

-LSU fell on the road to Arkansas.  They are still inside the bubble, but the value of their resume has dropped in the last couple of weeks.  Arkansas can still make the field, but they are going to need a strong finish in order to do it.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-NEBRASKA AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  Michigan should be able to hold serve without too much trouble.  They are pretty much on cruise control right now as the season is winding down.

-ILLINOIS AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten).  I think both these teams are virtual locks for the top half of the bracket and are now just playing for seeding.  Illinois has won four straight, and Ohio State has won five out of six, so both are playing well right now.

-HOUSTON AT UCONN (American).  Barring a total surprise Houston should make the NCAA Tournament, but their resume has been slipping somewhat and this would be a really nice road win for them to pick up.

-STANFORD AT OREGON STATE (Pac 12).  Stanford is still on the outskirts of the bubble and really needs this win on the road to give them a chance.  The next game at Oregon is also really big.

-WICHITA STATE AT MEMPHIS (American).  Memphis will most likely need the automatic bid to reach the NCAA Tournament, but if they win out and win a few games in the conference tournament they should have a chance.  Wichita State is very close to the bubble and could really use this win to help keep them inside of it.

-WASHINGTON AT ARIZONA STATE (Pac 12).  Arizona State has lost two straight but is still in relatively good shape in regards to making the NCAA Tournament.  If they hold serve the rest of the way they should be okay.

-WASHINGTON STATE AT ARIZONA (Pac 12).  Arizona is safely inside the bubble and will almost assuredly land in the top half of the bracket if they hold serve the rest of the way.

-CALIFORNIA AT OREGON (Pac 12).  If Oregon can finish strong they should be able to lock up a protected seed.  This game tonight is very winnable.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Thursday, March 5th

For Day 2 of our Championship Week video notebooks – CLICK HERE

Northern Colorado (20-9, 13-5) at Montana (18-11, 14-4) – 9:00 PM EST (WatchBigSky.com)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Missoula, Montana for a pivotal matchup between two Big Sky Contenders – the Northern Colorado Bears sit a game out of first place as they hit the road to take on co-leader Montana. The bad news for Northern Colorado? They are coming off of a loss at home against co-leader Eastern Washington and have now been swept by the Eagles in the NoCoEWU Cup. However, UNC has already beaten Montana in their first meeting 74-66 on the strength of 22 points from Bodie Hume. After tonight, the Bears finish their season at Montana State; EWU will finish their season with home games against Idaho State and Weber State.

Montana comes into today’s game having won seven of their last eight games; one of those games was a 92-82 victory against EWU that gave the Grizzlies a season sweep of the Eagles. A win tonight and either one more loss or a Montana victory in their season finale against Southern Utah would give the Grizzlies a share of the Big Sky title and subsequent #1 seed in the conference tournament. In their last outing, Sayeed Pridgett had 24 points to lead the Grizzlies to a 79-71 victory at Sacramento State.
