SURVIVAL BOARD UPDATE

-BINGHAMTON (America East) – out with a loss AND a Maine win

-SELA (Southland )- out with a loss

-HOUSTON BAPTIST (Southland) – out with a loss OR a McNeese win

-NEW ORLEANS (Southland) – out with a loss AND a McNeese win

NEWS AND NOTES

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day between Furman and UNC Greensboro – CLICK HERE

-Duke lost another road game to a team that’s nowhere close to making the field.  This time in double overtime to Wake Forest.  The game went back and forth with Wake jumping out early, then Duke coming back and while not playing their best still appearing to be in control, then a bit of a collapse at the end of regulation, and then Wake sort of ran away in the second overtime.  Duke is probably still a protected seed, but their resume has taken a few hits in recent weeks.

-Michigan State had a big second half against Iowa to pick up the win at home, which is something they kind of needed for their momentum.

-Oklahoma was right on the bubble, and really needed the win against Texas Tech yesterday.  They pretty much controlled the whole game and it was somewhat of a disappointing effort from a Texas Tech team that could have really used the win as well.

-Memphis fell on the road at SMU, which they really could have done without since they are already just a bubble team at best.  It’s looking more and more like they’ll need the auto bid to get them in.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-SAINT JOHN’S AT VILLANOVA (Big East).  Villanova still has a shot at ending up seeded as high as the #2 line, and is just one game out of first place in the Big East.  They need to hold serve at home.

-GEORGIA AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  We have South Carolina outside the bubble, but within reach of it.  They obviously can’t afford to lose at home to a team that’s nowhere near the bubble.

-RUTGERS AT PENN STATE (Big Ten).  Penn State has taken a bit of a step back with two straight losses, but I still think they can end up as a protected seed if they can finish strong.  This is a winnable game tonight that could get them back on track.  Rutgers, on the other hand, has had a good season but has been awful away from home.  If they win this game tonight then their NCAA Tournament chances would skyrocket.  If not, then they have just one more shot at a true road win.  I think the committee will leave them out if they don’t pick up at least one more, so this one tonight is HUGE.

-VIRGINIA AT VIRGINIA TECH (ACC).  It’s never easy to go on the road and play a rival, but Virginia has been playing better, they need to hold serve in order to land inside the bubble, which means they need to win this one tonight.

-RHODE ISLAND AT FORDHAM (Atlantic Ten).  Rhody is solidly on the bubble.  They should win easily tonight.  They’ll be in serious trouble if they don’t.

-RICHMOND AT GEORGE WASHINGTON (Atlantic Ten).  Richmond is squarely on the bubble so every game has a bit of a pivotal feel to it.  GW is nowhere near the bubble, so the Spiders will be in big trouble if they lose this one.

-EAST TENNESSEE STATE AT WOFFORD (SoCon).  Wofford has lost five straight, but is still capable of playing well at home and will be jacked way up for this oneIt’s a tough road test for ETSU, but if they are able to win it and win out through the regular season after today then I do think they will be inside the bubble even if they don’t win in the conference tournament.

-NORTHWESTERN STATE AT STEPHEN F AUSTIN (Southland).  If SFA wins out, the committee will give them a serious look.

-EVANSVILLE AT NORTHERN IOWA (Missouri Valley).  Northern Iowa is flying very close to the cut line, but they can still land on the right side of the bubble so long as they win out and avoid an early loss in the conference tournament.  They are very close to being out of strikes, though.

-GEORGETOWN AT MARQUETTE (Big East).  Georgetown continues to walk the tight rope of the bubble.  A win tonight would go a long way toward them landing on the right side of it.  Marquette is a virtual lock at this point and will likely be in the top half of the bracket.  They’re just playing for seeding.

-TENNESSEE AT ARKANSAS (SEC).  Arkansas just snapped a five game losing streak and with four games to go, three of which are against teams outside the bubble, and I think they need to win all of them.

-MARYLAND AT MINNESOTA (Big Ten).  Maryland had their wining streak snapped at Ohio State this past weekend, but are still in really good shape and could end up as high as the #2 line if they finish strong.  This is another winnable road game for the Terps.

-LSU AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Both teams will make the NCAA Tournament barring a collapse, but both could also really improve their resumes between now and the end, and this game is a chance for both of them to do that.

-NOTRE DAME AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC).  Notre Dame still has a path to the NCAA Tournament, but they will need a very strong finish in order to make that happen.

-UTAH AT STANFORD (Pac 12).  Stanford still has a path to the NCAA Tournaemnt, but they will need a very strong finish in order to make that happen.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Wednesday, February 26th

Furman (23-6, 13-3) at UNC-Greensboro (23-6, 13-3) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day is shaping up as a potential preview of the SoCon Tournament semifinals if the season were to end today – the UNC-Greensboro Spartans play host to the Furman Paladins in the Greensboro Coliseum tonight. UNC-G won the first meeting between both teams in Greenville 86-73 back on January 13; Isaiah Miller led the Spartans with 18 points and 5 assists in that contest. UNC-G has also won six straight games to at least remain in the NCAA Tournament at-large discussion; they have had to walk on pins and needles just to beat Wofford at home in overtime and even at lowly VMI on the road.

Furman comes into tonight’s game having won eight out of their last nine games; the lone exception was a 75-66 loss at East Tennessee State last night that cost the Paladins a potential shot at the #1 seed in the conference tournament set to begin next week in Asheville. However, the Paladins are coming off of a thrilling 67-66 win against upstate rival Wofford; Mike Bothwell hit a layup with 12.1 seconds to put Furman ahead for good to salvage a season split against the Terriers.

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day, which is a good one in the MAC between Akron and Bowling Green – CLICK HERE

-Louisville was cruising at Florida State last night and had an 11 point lead early on in the second half.  They ended up losing by 15.  Florida State TOTALLY dominated the game from that point on outscoring Louisville by 26 and winning 82-67.

-DAYTON AT GEORGE MASON (Atlantic Ten).  Dayton keeps winning and will assuredly end up as a #1 or #2 seed if they win out.  This is a chance for them to pick up another road win.

-DUKE AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  The last time Duke went on the road it didn’t go so well, but it probably isn’t that much of a setback.  They still have a shot at finishing first in the ACC, and can still end up with a 1 or 2 seed depending on how things play out.

-KENTUCKY AT TEXAS A&M (SEC).  TAMU has strung together a few wins, but really has their hands full tonight against a Kentucky team that is a lock for the tournament and has a path to a protected seed if they can keep winning at the clip they have been these past couple of weeks.

-OLE MISS AT AUBURN (SEC).  Auburn is way inside the bubble and will likely end up as a protected seed.  They just need to hold serve in games like this.

-IOWA AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten).  Both teams are inside the bubble and both appear to be locks.  They are both playing for seeding and a win tonight would look good on either team’s resume.

-DEPAUL AT XAVIER (Big East).  Xavier is inside the bubble right now and is just needing to hold serve.  Losing at home to a team that’s outside the bubble is not a good way to hold serve and remain inside the bubble, so they need to get it done tonight.

-KANSAS STATE AT BAYLOR (Big 12).  This is Baylor’s first game since Kansas had the big win over them this weekend.  It may be their most winnable conference game, so they shouldn’t have too much trouble at all bouncing back.

-TEXAS TECH AT OKLAHOMA (Big 12).  Both teams really need this win.  Texas Tech appears to be safely inside the bubble, but they don’t want to slip up down the stretch.  This would be a solid win which would help their resume and get them a step closer.  Oklahoma is squarely on the bubble and this game has an extremely pivotal feel to it for them.  If they win they’re a little safer, and if they don’t then they are really scrambling to stay above water.

-NC STATE AT NORTH CAROLINA (ACC).  This is a rivalry game, but it is also a hugely important game for NC State.  We currently have them inside the bubble, but do not have them labeled as safe.  A loss to a sub-NIT caliber team (and it’s strange describing UNC that way) would be really damaging.

-MEMPHIS AT SMU (American).  Memphis is still outside the bubble, but barely.  They basically need to win out.  SMU has a good overall record and beating them on the road won’t be easy, but it’s the kind of game that Memphis needs to be able to win to show that they belong in the field.

-ALABAMA AT MISSISSIPPI STATE (SEC).  Mississippi State is squarely on the bubble and needs to hold serve in games at home against teams that are outside the bubble.

-COLORADO STATE AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West).  This is San Diego State’s first game since their first loss of the season.  I think they’ll still end up with a #1 seed if they win out through the conference tournament, which is something that they are good enough to do.

-SAN JOSE STATE AT UTAH STATE (Mountain West).  Utah State is squarely on the bubble and a loss at home like this could sink them for good.  This is essentially a buy game, so it’s very important that they hold serve.

Akron (21-6, 11-3) at Bowling Green (20-7, 11-3) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

The fate of the MAC regular season title hangs in the balance for tonight’s game between the Akron Zips and the Bowling Green Falcons. Akron comes into tonight’s game with a five-game winning streak that was highlighted by a 74-59 victory over the Falcons in the team’s first matchup in Akron. Loren Cristian Jackson had 28 points and the Zips overall held Bowling Green to under 36% shooting from the field in that game. Akron also has wins against each of the Michigan schools along with Mother Miami in their current winning streak.

Bowling Green is 11-2 in their last 13 games, and Justin Turner is almost singlehandedly making a case for MAC Player of the Year in the process. He hit a pair of free throws that sealed a win against archrival Toledo at home back on February 8; he also hit a game-winning shot last Saturday that gave BGSU a come-from-behind 62-61 victory against the Ohio Bobcats. Tonight is the beginning of a four-game stretch for Bowling Green where they will also travel to Kent State and host Buffalo in the regular season finale (with a trip to Mother Miami mixed in).

The Hoops HD Report: February 24th

We look back at a crazy week of action that saw a huge match-up between Kansas and Baylor with the #1 ranking on the line, Gonzaga falling to BYU, and San Diego State losing in a shocker to UNLV.  Two other top ten teams from the Big Ten also went down.

In the Atlantic Ten we discuss whether or not Dayton has a chance at ending up as a #1 seed and how Richmond and Rhode Island had tough weeks.  In the Big East we look at the possibilities of the league getting as many as eight teams in with Providence and Georgetown playing well down the stretch.  In the Pac 12 we look at how strong UCLA is suddenly playing and how Arizona State suddenly appears to be the strongest team in the conference.  Kentucky has once again clinched a share of first place in the SEC and appears to be heading for a protected seed.  In the American, things are slipping away from Wichita State and Cincinnati.  All that, and much more!

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Happy Tourney-versary!: HoopsHD interviews former South Dakota star Turner Trofholz

With the 2020 NCAA tourney tipping off next month, we will spend this month taking a walk down memory lane with a choice collection of players/coaches who are celebrating an awesome anniversary this year. From some game-winning FTs in the 1955 tourney (65th anniversary) through a 17-PT comeback win in the 2015 1st 4 (5th anniversary), these legends have all carved out a little piece of history in past Marches. We continue our series with Turner Trofholz, who scored 42 PTS in a D-2 tourney game in 2005. He was a 2-time All-American/2-time Academic All-American, the 2006 national co-POY, and still has the best FG% in school history. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Turner about the 15th anniversary of his great performance in the 2005 tourney and his decision to become a coach.

You grew up in Nebraska: what made you choose South Dakota? First: the people who recruited me. When I was in high school we had a home visit and the 2 people who came into Schuyler were Andy Markowski/Dave Boots. I knew Coach Markowski from watching him play high school basketball at Ord/college basketball at Nebraska. I really liked Coach Boots and everything that he had to say. Second: the dome. When I went up for my visit the dome sold me: it was a great place to play!

In the 2005 D-2 tourney you scored a career-high 42 PTS/16-20 FG in a 10-PT win over Nebraska-Kearney: was it just 1 of those scenarios where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were “in the zone”? I really did not take a shot from outside 5 feet! UNK pressed our guards all game long but we broke the press and I got to shoot layups most of the time. We had a really close group of guards who worked well together. Josh Mueller/Luke Tibbetts/Dave Nour were all really good at handling the ball.

In 2006 you were named D-2 co-national POY: what did it mean to you to receive such an outstanding honor? Being in Indianapolis to receive the award in front of all the D-1 coaches/players who were receiving their own awards was the best part. That was the year that JJ Redick/Adam Morrison split the D-1 national POY award. As a huge Duke fan it was humbling for me to meet Redick as well as Sheldon Williams (the national DPOY).

You were a 2-time All-American/2-time Academic All-American: how did you balance your work on the court with your work in the classroom? I left basketball on the basketball court and left classwork in the classroom. I think it is important to understand that when you are playing basketball you need to focus on that, and when you are in class you need to focus on that. It was not always easy being gone from class during road trips. As long as you communicated and worked hard to get things turned in as soon as possible, the professors were usually pretty good about working with you. They did not cut you much slack but they were very understanding about when you were away from campus.

You remain in the top-3 in school history in both PTS/REB: how did you balance your scoring with your rebounding? A lot of my scoring came from my rebounding. I was only looking at 1 stat on the stat sheet: how many offensive rebounds I had. If teams are focusing on you when you are on offense then you can always go to the glass and get offensive boards. I think that I led the league in offensive rebounds during my senior year, which was 1 of my ultimate goals. You can provide yourself/your teammates that extra possession you may need to win a game.

Your 61.9 FG% is still #1 in school history: what is the key to being a great shooter? It was an advantage of playing the post and not having to shoot far away from the basket. I think the biggest thing for me was my footwork. I knew that I was not the biggest post in the league so I had to find ways to get around people. Footwork was important and allowed me to create separation in the post and turn a difficult shot into a much easier shot.

After graduating you played professionally in Austria/Holland: what is the biggest difference between basketball in the US vs. basketball overseas? There is not a huge difference: just some slight differences in the rules, stuff that you get used to right away. In Austria it was interesting to play with a language barrier. Some players and even 1 of my assistant coaches did not speak much English: THAT part was tough to get used to!

In 2016 you were named to the school’s Hall of Fame: where does that rank among the highlights of your career? It is up there as 1 of the greatest. If you play a sport and do not want to be remembered as 1 of the greatest of all time, then why play the sport?! You need to have a competitive drive at all times since that will make you better than the person you are playing against.

You are currently a girls’ high school basketball coach: how do you like the job, and what do you hope to do in the future? I am currently a girls’ coach after I was a head boys’ coach for 4 years. I would like to eventually get back to the boys’ side of things: girls’ basketball is definitely a different game. I could also see myself getting into the college game if the right opportunity comes along. Even if that does not happen, coaching will always be a passion of mine. Maybe somewhere down the line I will become an athletic director since I finished my masters in administration.

When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most? I would like to be remembered as a good teammate and someone who people liked playing basketball with and was coachable. Everything else does not really matter unless coaches wanted to coach you and players enjoyed playing with you.
