Call to the Hall: HoopsHD interviews Tom Kearns about brand-new Hall of Famer Lennie Rosenbluth

On New Year’s Eve the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2024 including 2-time NCAA champ Dave Meyers, #1 overall pick in the 1956 NBA Draft Sihugo Green, and 1957 NCAA champ Lennie Rosenbluth. Lennie set an ACC career scoring record with 2045 PTS, his 26.9 career PPG remains #1 in Tar Heel history, and in 1957 he was named Helms Foundation College Basketball Player of the Year as the most outstanding player in the nation. Lennie passed away in 2022 but earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with his former teammate Tom Kearns about their magical 1957 undefeated season.

(Lennie Rosenbluth is in the middle, and Tom Kearns is on the far right)

Lennie was born/raised in the Bronx and attended Staunton Military Academy in Virginia: what made him choose North Carolina for college? He went to a public high school in the Bronx (James Monroe High School) and did not get much playing time, but UNC coach Frank McGuire knew about Lennie for a long time thanks to a scout named Harry Gotkin. Harry’s nephew Dave later played basketball at NC State for Coach Everett Case.

He only played a handful of games in high school due to not making the cut as a freshman/sophomore/junior and a coach’s strike during his senior year: how was he able to make such a smooth transition to the college game despite his relative lack of experience? He was a prolific scorer who just got it done. He had a great touch and knew how to get in position to get his shot up. Staunton was well known at the time so I am sure that he did wonderful things during his 1 year there, which is how he became a well-known entity.

In 1957 he led the nation with 285 FTM: how crucial to his success was his ability to get to the FT line and then make them once he got there? He had the whole package and was extraordinary. He hated to practice but he turned it on as soon as the game tipped off: it was an interesting contrast.

In the 1957 NCAA tourney your team had a 4-PT 3-OT win over Michigan State in the semifinals and a 1-PT 3-OT win over Kansas in the title game the very next day to finish the season 32-0: what did it mean to him/you to win the title in such dramatic fashion? Johnny Green was at the foul line for Michigan State in the final seconds of double-OT in our semifinal game when 1 of their guards walked up to me and said, “30 and 1”. Johnny missed the FT, then Pete Brennan drove down the court and made a jump shot for us to send it to triple-OT! I remember in the 2nd OT against Kansas neither team scored a single point, but our forte was to control the game. You also must be lucky: there were several games early on that we could have lost but never did, and both games in the Final 4 could have gone either way. After we won the title there were no showers at the Municipal Auditorium, so we had to go back to the hotel to shower, then put on our jackets/ties before meeting North Carolina governor Luther Hodges.

His 26.9 career PPG remains the highest all-time scoring average in UNC history: what was his secret for being such a great scorer? He just had the magic touch: the ball loved him and wanted to go in each time that he put it up. He knew how to maneuver around the basket: some guys are good defensive players but when they are on offense they cannot put it in the ocean. Everybody on our team knew where to go if we got in trouble: our #1 man!

He was a 2-time All-American and 1957 national POY/ACC Male Athlete of the Year: what did it mean to him to receive such outstanding honors? Those were great tributes to him and what he had done: he was a special guy.

In the 1957 NBA Draft he was selected 6th overall by Philadelphia (2 spots ahead of Hall of Famer Sam Jones): what did it mean to him to get drafted? #6 was probably a lot higher than he expected.

After a 2-year NBA career he ended up working as a high school American History teacher/basketball coach in Florida and later moved back to Chapel Hill: why did he have such a short pro career, and how much did he enjoy his post-NBA life? He was just not physically built for the pros because it was too much of a running game: he was a step or 2 below that and did not have any interest in building up his upper-body strength. He married a great woman named Pat and I thought they made a mistake by leaving North Carolina because he was such a big name there, but they later came back from Florida, and all is well that ends well.

His #10 jersey was the 1st ever retired by the Tar Heels, in 2002 he was named 1 of the 50 greatest players in ACC history, and last week he was elected to the College Basketball Hall of Fame: what was your reaction when you heard the good news? My reaction was, “What the hell took them so long?!” He is 1 of the greatest of all time in the ACC and should have been elected to the Hall of Fame a lot sooner. Thank God he is finally in there because that is what counts.

He passed away in 2022: when people look back on his career, how do you think that he should be remembered the most? As 1 of the all-time greatest players in UNC history.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Sunday, January 5th

Murray State (7-7, 1-2) at Drake (12-1, 2-1) – 3:00 PM ET (ESPN2)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day heads to Des Moines, Iowa for a matchup between the Murray State Racers and the Drake Bulldogs. Drake opened up the 2025 calendar year on a sour note as their 12-game was snapped in a 74-70 road loss at Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday night. With Bradley off to a 4-0 start in league play and a Wednesday night matchup at Bradley looming for Drake, the Bulldogs cannot afford to have a letdown today at home.

Murray State is coming off of a tough stretch where they finished 7th in the Diamond Head Classic with losses against Nebraska and Charlotte, but they did salvage a win against Loyola-Chicago. When the Racers resumed league play, they lost a tough 74-68 contest at home against Illinois State. JaCobi Wood is averaging 14.1 points a game and 5.2 assists a game for Murray State.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Sunday, Jan 5th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-It’s not surprising that Tennessee beat Arkansas, or that they did it easily, but with the final score being 76-52, I wasn’t expecting it to be quite that easy.

-Iowa State also pretty much blew Baylor off the floor 74-55. Again, the result wasn’t all that surprising, but it’s worth pointing out just how impressive Iowa State looked.

-Duke blew SMU off the floor 89-62 to get a really nice road win. This was surprising. I thought SMU would be way amped up for this one and give the Blue Devils a game, but that just didn’t happen.

-Alabama blew out Oklahoma 107-79. Another game where the result wasn’t necessarily shocking, but for this to be as big of a blowout as it was was kind of unexpected.

-Kentucky had a big 106-100 win over Florida, which was the first loss of the year for the Gators. I don’t know if it even qualifies as a setback for Florida seeing as how Kentucky is ranked in the top ten and how it was a road game, but it was still a nice win for the Wildcats.

-Nebraska picked a really nice 66-58 win over UCLA. Nebraska has now won six straight since getting blown out by Michigan State and their resume is starting to look stronger and stronger. UCLA has now lost two out of three, but given the overall strenght of their resume they’re still in good shape.

-Arizona got a nice 72-67 road win against Cincinnati. Arizona actually had a 19 point lead in the second half and appeared to be on cruise control, but Cincinnati battled back and actually tied the game in the final few minutes, but couldn’t quite come all the way back. Arizona has had some tough losses prior to yesterday, and really kind of needed this one.

-North Carolina barely escaped against a so-so Notre Dame team, but did hold on to win 74-73 and dodge a bit of a bullet.

-Dayton, who had looked so good earlier in the year, was completely blown off the floor by George Washington 82-62. They trailed for most of the game, and while there was a stretch during the second half where it appeared they were coming back, GW just dominated. I’m now rethinking my comments about how Dayton would likely blow through the Atlantic 10 and end up as a protected seed. They didn’t look anything like a protected seed yesterday.

-San Diego State picked up a really nice 76-68 road win against Boise State. I said coming into this that this game had a pivotal feel for both teams. It now feels as if San Diego State is looking like a very solid tournament team that can get into the field on the first ballot, and Boise State seems more like an NIT team at the moment.

-Furman, who had just one loss coming into yesterday, was beaten rather handily by UNC Greensboro 84-67. It is a bit of a setback for Furman, who looked like they may be positioning themselves to land inside the bubble had they been able to blow through the SoCon. It’s not easy to win at Greensboro, but that’s just it. Landing inside the bubble requires winning games that aren’t easy to win.

-Vanderbilt is now 13-1 after a really nice road win against LSU. With the strength at the top of the SEC, most people have kind of forgotten that there are some really good teams all throughout the conference. Vandy isn’t ranked in the top ten, but they are still really good and are having a great year.

-Washington State is now a very respectable 13-3 after a really solid 91-82 win over San Francisco yesterday. Wazzu is looking more and more like a team that will make it to the NCAA Tournament.

-Texas Tech looked really good at Utah yesterday. They went on the road and just completely blew out the Utes 93-65.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-INDIANA AT PENN STATE (Big Ten). Both teams are coming off wins and both seemed positioned to land inside the bubble, but both teams still have a lot of work to do to stay on that path. Another conference win would certainly help out either team.

-PROVIDENCE AT UCONN (Big East). UConn is a solid protected seed and Providence does not appear to be anywhere near the bubble right now, so the Huskies should be able to hold serve in this one.

-NORTHWESTERN AT PURDUE (Big Ten). Northwestern is coming off what has to be one of the more frustrating losses that any team has suffered this year after some questionable officiating at the end of their game against Penn State. It’s their second conference road loss this season against a solid opponent that happened in the final seconds. It doesn’t get any easier today as Purdue is in the rankings and is showing every sign that they’ll likely land in the top half of the bracket.

-MURRAY STATE AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley). Drake needs to bounce back from their somewhat surprising loss at UIC earlier this week.

-KANSAS AT UCF (Big 12). This will be a road test for the Jayhawks as UCF is a very strong 10-2 with some pretty good wins and Kansas is still looking for their first true road win of the season. The Jayhawks also need to bounce back from their surprising loss to WVU earlier this week.

-MARYLAND AT OREGON (Big Ten). Maryland is a solid team, but they’re coming off a loss to Washington and still haven’t managed a true road win this season. Oregon is looking to bounce back from a home loss to Illinois in a game where they were just blown off the floor. Speaking of Illinois…

-ILLINOIS AT WASHINGTON (Big Ten). Illinois is coming off that highly impressive blowout win at Oregon, and while they’ll be tested again on the road today, it’s hard to not like their chances after they looked so good the other night. Washington is a modest 10-4 and needs to start stringing together wins if they want to land inside the bubble.

-NORTH TEXAS AT MEMPHIS (American). I think Memphis has looked like a protected seed so far, and will end up getting one if they can hold serve for the rest of the season. North Texas is a good team, and a road win like this would be huge for their resume, but chances are they’re just too overmatched in this one.

DC Doubleheader: Hanging with the Hoyas AND Revolutionaries

HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel has spent the past 2 months covering only Georgetown basketball home games…but with the Dayton Flyers coming to DC this weekend he decided to make a doubleheader out of it. He was in attendance both Friday night at Capital 1 Arena for Xavier-Georgetown and Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center for Dayton-GW, and prepared this photo essay about both games in the battle of Ohio vs. DC.

GAME #1: Xavier-Georgetown

Another hot pregame meal: make-your-own burrito bowl/brownie/chocolate chip cookie. Both coaches wore…interesting sweaters to celebrate Lou Carnesecca’s 100th birthday anniversary weekend (Lou would have turned 100 this Sunday):

Let’s tip it off from the baseline for the 1st time all season with EASILY the most fans I have seen at a game all year:

Georgetown G Jayden Epps missed the Coppin State game last weekend due to an ankle injury but checked into today’s game after the 1st TV timeout (he was obviously not 100% as he went scoreless in 4 minutes):

Speaking of returning from injury, Xavier PF Zach Freemantle had been out since December 14th due to a lower-body injury, but also checked into today’s game after the 1st TV timeout and looked healthy while banking in a 3 from the top of the key:

Georgetown wing Micah Peavy has been a decent 3-PT shooter this season (33 3P%), but focused on his mid-range game in the 1st half by knocking down several jump shots en route to finishing with just the 2nd double-double of his 5-year college career:

His FR teammate Thomas Sorber dominated the paint by making layup after layup to help the Hoyas build a 30-24 halftime lead:

Xavier coach Sean Miller picked up a technical foul after screaming at a referee during the under-16 timeout despite his team cutting the deficit to 35-32…then proceeded to ditch his sweater for the rest of the game. Freemantle had a big 2nd half with a turnaround baseline jumper, a 3 from the top of the key, and a spin/baby hook while getting significant contributions from 2 teammates. SR Dayvion McKnight kept getting to the basket for several layups, while SO Dailyn Swain made a corner 3, as well as a twisting layup that concluded with an and-1:

Georgetown F Jordan Burks fouled out with 10 minutes left, forcing Coach Ed Cooley to tighten his already-short rotation, but it was G Malik Mack who saved the day. After just 6 PTS in the 1st half, Mack exploded for 20 PTS in the 2nd stanza and finished with 3-9 3PM (while the rest of his teammates combined for just 1-9 3PM) as the Hoyas hung on for a 69-63 win to improve to 12-2 just 1 year after going 9-23:

In the postgame press conference, I wanted to ask (former Arizona) Coach Miller about his team’s uncharacteristic 3-PT performance (they entered the game 7th in the nation at 40.6 3P% but made just 5-19 tonight)…but his answers to some other folks’ questions were so long that I did not get an opportunity to participate:

I surprised Coach Cooley by noting that his bench did not make a single FG in 40 minutes. He admitted that his team is banged up, but that if they can continue to defend like they did and still win games then it tells him that they are getting better. All he asks of his guys is to get to the under-4 timeout within 1 point of the lead:

That is NOT a wrap for now because it was on to Part 2 of my DC Doubleheader just 13 hours later:

GAME #2: Dayton-GW

A less-than-hot (but still tasty) pregame meal: bagels/cream cheese/water/fruit cup. I have been coming to the Smith Center for 2 decades but never previously noticed this signed photo of former GW player/Celtics coaching legend Red Auerbach:

Speaking of which, there is a LOT of red in the crowd because the Dayton fans travel rather well:

I expected to see Darren Buchanan Jr. in uniform today, as the pregame notes listed him in the projected starting 5…but his right foot is in a boot:

Let’s tip it off from up in the corner (no photo because I was answering a question for somebody at the time). GW coach Chris Caputo is rumored to be on the short list of candidates to replace his former boss Jim Larranaga at Miami…but we will have much more on that below:

Dayton coach Anthony Grant could have used a 5-minute timeout after watching his team fall behind by double-digits very early:

The early hero for GW was FR Christian Jones, who came out hot with a layup and a trio of threes before the 1st TV timeout:

The Revs have not been a great long-range-shooting team this year (32.5 3P%) but Trey Autry continued the 3-party with 2 of his own in the 1st half (and guarded this water bottle with his life!):

Dayton’s Nate Santos/Malachi Smith did their best to keep it close…but it was not close to enough:

GW SR Gerald Drumgoole Jr. made a career-high 7 threes in his prior game at Richmond, and he proved that it was not a fluke by finishing the half with a 3 to beat the buzzer (his team’s 8th and final 3 of the half) to give his team a 43-27 lead…and I have the video to prove it:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGY5Vbz200E

Dayton G Posh Alexander came off the bench to make a couple of layups and a 3 from the top of the key as his team cut the lead to 54-51 with 12 minutes remaining, so I expected the Flyers to eventually pull off the comeback…but it was not meant to be:

Jones had only made 11 threes during his 1st 14 career games, but was in the zone all afternoon as he made 5-8 3PM to set a career-high with 23 PTS. GW led 64-60 with 5½ minutes left but grounded the Flyers with an 18-2 run the rest of the way. Thanks to some more threes by Drumgoole and a perfect night from Autry (2-2 from 1-PT land/3-3 from 2-PT land/3-3 from 3-PT land) the Revs cruised to an 82-62 victory.

In the postgame press conference, I asked Jones how he was able to turn things around after making 0-4 FG with 3 TO in a loss at Richmond on New Year’s Eve. He said that it was due to his teammates/coaches believing in him and always being there for him, so he just took advantage of the moment today:

While I assumed it was the last thing in the world that Coach Caputo wanted to talk about, this was his 1st home game since Larranaga’s retirement, so I rolled the dice with this question: “If he wants you to be his successor, and if they want to raise your annual salary by $2 million, will you tell them no because you are having so much fun?” He admitted that he liked how I phrased my question, then was kind enough to give a very long/honest answer (scroll to the 8:20 mark at the following link):
www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS-GU6LtuTU

That is a wrap for now but check back in a couple of weeks when DePaul visits DC to play Georgetown!

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Saturday, Jan 4th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s latest Staff Bracket – CLICK HERE

-Marquette got a battle from Creighton, but was able to hold them off at home 79-71 and stay unbeaten in Big East play. Creighton falls to 9-6 on the year, and the injuries they’ve had to deal with have not made things any easier, but considering how competitive they were in what was likely their toughest remaining regular season game the Bluejays may be good enough to start stringing together some wins and get themselves back in the position to make the NCAA Tournament.

-Michigan State picked up a really solid road win against Ohio State as they held them off 69-62.

-New Mexico needed overtime, and then a crazy last second play and shot at the end of overtime, to BARELY escape Nevada 82-81.

-And, last but not least, CHICAGO STATE IS A D1 CONFERENCE LEADER!!!! They knocked off Saint Francis U yesterday 64-52 and are now in a four-way tie for first place in the NEC!!!

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-FLORIDA AT KENTUCKY. It’s two top ten teams in the SEC conference opener, and both have looked like top ten teams for the bulk of the season. It should be an electric crowd for an SEC match-up between two likely protected seeds.

-GEORGIA AT OLE MISS (SEC). Georgia is 12-1 overall with some really nice wins and seems well positioned to land inside the bubble. It’s not going to be easy against an Ole Miss team that’s had a good year overall, but is looking to bounce back from a rather decisive loss against Memphis.

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big 12). West Virginia is coming off a massive win at Kansas, and their resume looks amazing right now. They should be able to hold serve against Oklahoma State at home today.

-DAYTON AT GEORGE WASHINGTON (Atlantic 10). Dayton is having an outstanding year, but this is their first true road game of the season and it will be a bit of a test. GW has not played a strong schedule, but they come in at 11-3 and can take a big step forward if they’re able to pull out this win.

-ARKANSAS AT TENNESSEE (SEC). Arkansas is ranked in the 20s and looks like a solid team. Tennessee is ranked #1 and looks like a Final Four team, and with them being at home you have to think they’ll be big favorites in this one.

-BAYLOR AT IOWA STATE (Big 12). Iowa State is ranked 3rd in the nation and while it’s hard to say if they’ll end up with a #1 seed at the end, it is certainly possible. Their only loss of the season was a very close game to Auburn, and they already have some big wins. Baylor is good, but they probably aren’t good enough to pull this one out at Iowa State.

-BYU AT HOUSTON (Big 12). Houston is a solid team whose resume, while good, probably doesn’t reflect how good they actually are. BYU is coming off an impressive and decisive win against Arizona State, and if they can somehow get this one on the road it should shoot them up our seedlist, but it’s not going to be easy.

-UCLA AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten). A really interesting match-up here between a UCLA team that just beat Gonzaga and is perhaps being a little undervalued, and a Nebraska team with a solid 11-2 record and some decent wins of their own that is probably also being undervalued.

-DUKE AT SMU (ACC). This game is fascinating. Duke has proven that they are a strong team, and they’ve done it on the road. SMU is a very solid 11-2, and while they don’t have any super-flashy wins, they do have a lot of decent ones where they’ve played really well. This is a showcase game for SMU that will give them a chance to put themselves in the spotlight if they can pull this one out at home.

-ARIZONA AT CINCINNATI. Arizona is 7-5, but they’ve played a tough schedule and their last three losses were close games against really solid team. They go on the road to Cincinnati, who is ranked 17th with a 10-2 overall record, but other than their win against Dayton they’ve amassed that record against a rather weak schedule and will be challenged today. It could very well be that these are two teams that are going in opposite directions.

-MISSOURI AT AUBURN (SEC). Missouri is good. They’re 11-2, they’ve got a nice win against Kansas, and they nearly beat a really good Illinois team just before Christmas. Auburn is outstanding, though, and winning at Auburn is likely too tall of an order.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT BOISE STATE (Mountain West). This is a huge game between two of the better teams in the MWC. San Diego State has the better resume, but it’s possible that we’ll see both of them in the NCAA Tournament. Having said that, both still have work to do, and both will only have a few more opportunities for high caliber wins the rest of the day, so this is a hugely important game for both of them.

-VANDERBILT AT LSU (SEC). With the SEC being so strong at the top most people haven’t paid that much attention to either of these teams, but Vandy is 12-1 and LSU is 11-2, and both have some decent wins to go along with those good records, so today is a big one.

-OKLAHOMA AT ALABAMA (SEC). Both teams are high in the rankings, and both have managed the kinds of wins they need to in order to position themselves for a protected seed. This is yet another SEC showdown between two really highly ranked and very good teams.

-COLORADO AT ARIZONA STATE (Big 12). Colorado has been much better this year than what I was expecting, and if they can pick this one up on the road we have to start thinking of them as being a tournament caliber team. Both teams are good, and both have won some notable games, but both still have work to do.

-STANFORD AT PITTSBURGH (ACC). Stanford has made a little bit of noise, but only a little. Pitt should be able to hold serve at home in this one. Tournament caliber teams need to win the home games against teams that aren’t likely to make it inside the bubble.

-TEXAS TECH AT UTAH (Big 12). Both have shown signs of life, but both still have a lot of work to do and both could really use this win today.

-SAN FRANCISCO AT WASHINGTON STATE (West Coast). I know it is still early January, but this game still has a bubblicious feel to it. Both teams have good records and both have managed some decent wins, but both have also missed a few opportunities and still have work to do. This would be a really good win for whichever team is able to pull it out.

-TEXAS AT TEXAS A&M (SEC). This is a HUGE rivalry game! And we finally get to see them together as members of the same conference!! TAMU is high in the rankings and has a really solid profile. Texas has a good record, but they don’t have much yet in the way of good wins. Of course that would change today if they’re able to pull off the road upset tonight.

-MICHIGAN AT USC (Big Ten). I really like this Michigan team, and while they’ve had a few nights where they just didn’t play up to their ceiling, and whle this is a road game against a very respectable USC team, it’s a game that Michigan can certainly win.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

Kean (nonD1) @ Princeton
NC State @ Wake Forest (ACC) – both teams have work to do
North Carolina @ Notre Dame (ACC) – UNC needs to start stringing together wins and not drop any to teams that are nowhere near the bubble, even if it’s a road game
Saint Bonaventure @ Fordham (Atlantic 10) – a win for the Bonnies gets them to 14-1
George Mason @ Rhode Island (Atlantic 10) – Rhody has played a weak schedule and has a small margin for error, but a win does get them to 12-2
Butler @ Saint John’s (Big East) – The Johnnies are a really good team who’s had a few really tough losses against strong opponents. They should be able to hold serve in this one
Arkansas State @ James Madison (Sun Belt) – Arkansas State will likely get a look from the committee if they can blow through conference play
Furman @ UNC Greensboro (SoCon) – may be one of the tougher remaining games for Furman. A win gets them to a very impressive 14-1
Wyoming @ Air Force (Mountain West, Front Range) – WE AT HOOPS HD LOVE THE FRONT RANGE!!!
San Diego @ Oregon State (West Coast) – Oregon State needs to bounce back from their damaging and decisive loss to LMU
Middle Tennessee @ Liberty (Conference USA) – Liberty needs to bounce back from a loss and they’ll likely be challenged by a pretty good MTSU team today
Missouri State @ Bradley (Missouri Valley) – Bradley can improve to a very impressive 13-2 with a win
California @ Clemson (ACC) – Clemson should hold serve at home
Gonzaga @ LMU – LMU is coming off a very impressive showing against Oregon State and is not the easiest team to beat on their floor, but Gonzaga should still get this one
Fresno State @ Utah State (Mountain West) – it’s a conference game, but it may as well be a buy game
UC San Diego @ Cal State Fullerton (Big West) – I’m all in on UCSD and think they are good enough to land inside the bubble come March
-UC Riverside @ UC Irvine (Big West) – we’ve been big on UC Irvine all year. They have a path to the NCAA Tournament if they can hold serve throughout conference play
Saint Mary’s @ Portland (West Coast) – should be a very winnable road game for SMC
