NEWS AND NOTES

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day between Boston U and Army – CLICK HERE

-It seemed as though every game last night was great.

-Rutgers played great defense against Maryland and had a lead throughout most of the first half, but missed several opportunities to widen it and get control of the game.  It once again came down to the final minute, but once again Rutgers came up just short of picking up a road win against a highly ranked first ballot team.  Maryland improves to 18-4 and adds another notable win to their resume.

-Auburn, for the second straight week, went on the road, overcame a second half deficit in front of a very hostile crowd, and picked up an overtime win.  I know they just beat Kentucky at home, but getting the win at Arkansas on the road is probably their singular most impressive win to date.

-Penn State went on the road to Michigan State and picked up another monster ‘upset’ road win.  You have to start thinking of Penn State as a protected seed now, seeing as how they’re beating ranked teams on the road, and doing it in a conference where seemingly no one else can win on the road.

-Ohio State got a big road win against Michigan in a game that was close all throughout.  I don’t recall either team ever having what would be described as a “comfortable lead.”  Ohio State has pulled themselves out of whatever tailspin they were in and is back on the right track.  I don’t think it’s time for Michigan to panic yet, but they are far from being able to sleepwalk.  This game, by the way, was MUCH better than what the last several football games have been!

-Virginia Tech started the season off strong, kept going strong, and is now going down.  They were blown out by Georgia Tech last night, which will most definitely knock them outside of our bubble when we do our next staff bracket tomorrow.

-There aren’t many teams that have had a better four day stretch than Xavier.  Less than a week ago, they were NIT-ish at best.  But on Saturday they went on the road and won decisively at Seton Hall, which is one of the better true road wins that any team has managed all season, and last night they followed it up with another decisive win at DePaul.  Xavier is now all of a sudden looking like a solid tournament team, and you wonder how they were able to jack up their quality of play like the flip of a switch.

-Rhode Island got a little bit of a scare from UMass, but held on to win

-Duke trailed Boston College for most of the game, but came back to win at the end

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-VILLANOVA AT BUTLER (Big East).  Like a lot of Big East games, this is a resume building opportunity for two teams that look to be first ballot caliber teams, and who both could end up as protected seeds.  Butler has lost four of their last six and is in a bit of a slump, but they’ll jump right out of it if they can win tonight.

-IOWA STATE AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big 12).  West Virginia looks like a protected seed and Iowa State looks like they could make it to the NIT.  Maybe.  The Mountaineers just need to hold serve tonight.

-IOWA AT PURDUE (Big Ten).  Iowa has a good resume, but it will improve a ton if they can pick up a road win in a game like this.  Purdue is still hovering around the bubble despite just being 12-10, and at times they look fantastic, but on other nights they barely look like an NIT team.  Every game has a pivotal feel for them, and tonight is no different.

-CREIGHTON AT PROVIDENCE (Big East).  Creighton has really been playing well lately, but they have another tough test tonight against a Providence team that’s coming off a big win against Butler and who is really tough to beat.

-DUQUESNE AT SAINT LOUIS (Atlantic Ten).  SLU is outside the bubble, but if they can finish really strong they should end up getting the attention of the committee.

-CLEMSON AT VIRGINIA (ACC).  Virginia has been playing much better and has another winnable game tonight.  They appear to be playing at the level they need to in order to make the NCAA Tournament.

-GEORGIA AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Florida continues to hover around the bubble and needs to hold serve in games like this in order to remain on the right side of it.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT OLE MISS (SEC).  South Carolina is probably still off of most peoples’ radars, but look out for Angry Frank’s Gamecocks!  They’ve won five out of six, including wins against Kentucky and at Arkansas, and their next four games are winnable.  If they pick up all of those they’ll be 9-3 in conference and 16-8 overall with some notable wins on their resume.  That’s bubblish, if not better.

-EAST TENNESSEE STATE AT CHATTANOOGA (SoCon).  I think the committee should select ETSU if they win out through the regular season even if they don’t win the SoCon Tournament.  The problem is that I’m not sure that they will.  Tonight is another game that is harder to win than what it looks like, but that a tournament caliber team should win.  Chattanooga has just two home losses and they should be way up for this one.

-MERCER AT FURMAN (SoCon).  If Furman wins out, then they should at least get a look from the committee.

-NICHOLLS AT STEPHEN F AUSTIN (Southland).  These are two of the better teams in the Southland, and both have shown that they can play against big teams with SFA winning at Duke and Nicholls knocking off Pitt and nearly beating Illinois.  I say this every week, but SFA should get a look from the committee if they win out, but lose in the conference tournament.

-TCU AT OKLAHOMA STATE (Big 12).  If TCU is going to make any sort of run at making the field, then they have to start stringing together wins.  They have a winnable road game tonight, which would be just their second of the year.

-TEMPLE AT MEMPHIS (American).  Memphis is right on the bubble and has been struggling to beat NIT teams in the last couple of weeks.  They can’t afford to lose at home to non-tournament level teams.

-NORTHERN IOWA AT VALPARAISO (Mountain West).  I think Northern Iowa is good enough to win out, and if they do they should be inside the bubble even if they don’t win the conference tournament.

-SETON HALL AT GEORGETOWN (Big East).  Seton Hall is coming off a loss and is dealing with some injuries, but they are still having a fantastic season and still look to be in the drivers seat in the Big East.  Georgetown’s tournament hopes are hanging by a thread.  They need a win tonight to help keep them alive.

-NC STATE AT MIAMI FL (ACC).  NC State is squarely on the bubble, and after three straight losses needs a road win like this to help keep the bubble within reach.

-WAKE FOREST AT LOUISVILLE (ACC).  Louisville continues to play like one of the best teams in the country, and actually has as hot at winning the ACC.  They also have a shot at potentially ending up on the #1 line if they keep winning like they have been.

-LSU AT VANDERBILT (SEC).  This is a winnable road game for the Tigers, which would keep them unbeaten in SEC play and on pace to contend for a protected seed.

-WISCONSIN AT MINNESOTA (Big Ten).  Wisky is inside our bubble but could use some more wins like this to help stabilize their resume.  Minney is outside the bubble and needs some wins like this to get on the right side of it.  Oh yeah, and this is a rivalry game.

-UNLV AT UTAH STATE (Mountain West).  Utah State could still end up around the bubble and get the committee to give them a serious look, but they basically need to win out all the way until the MWC final in order for that to happen.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Wednesday, February 5th

Boston University (13-10, 7-3) at Army-West Point (11-10, 6-4) – 7:00 PM EST (PLN)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to the banks of the Hudson River for a matchup of Patriot League Contenders – the Boston University Terriers and the surprising Army Black Knights. Army has been one of the better stories in the month of January thanks to a six-game winning streak that suddenly has them in a three-way tie for fourth place with Navy and American. Tommy Funk had a career-high 33 points for Army in their 80-79 win at Lehigh – this is now the program’s longest winning streak in Patriot League play.

Boston University is a full game ahead of Army in the standings, but are only one full game behind Colgate for the overall lead and a half-game ahead of third-place Lafayette. The Terriers are “only” on a three-game winning streak of their own right now with wins against Loyola-Maryland at home and Holy Cross and Bucknell on the road. Max Mahoney leads BU with 15.5 points a game and 7.7 rebounds a game.

And since it is Rivalry Week, we would be remiss if we did not congratulate BU on a hard-fought win over BC in their Beanpot opener for hockey. Their championship game will be next Monday against Northeastern. These historic rivals are only eight miles apart and have never met in the NCAA Tournament.

-Chalky night last night with Baylor, Kansas, and Florida State all winning.

-Maryland Eastern Shore’s Centenary Award chances to a major hit yesterday with them winning on the road at Delaware State.  This could knock them out of the race entirely.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-DUKE AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC).  Duke still has a path to the #1 line, but they can’t afford to drop any more games to sub-tournament caliber teams if they want to end up as a 1 seed.

-RUTGERS AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  Rutgers desperately needs a couple of road wins, and if they can get one today it will tremendously improve their resume, but winning at Maryland is a very tall order.  The Terps are in contention for a protected seed, and need to hold serve in games like this in order to keep that within reach.

-AUBURN AT ARKANSAS (SEC).  Auburn is coming off a big win against Kentucky and has another very tough test tonight on the road against an Arkansas team that appears to be inside the bubble.  This is a win that both teams could use and that would look good on both resumes.

-UMASS AT RHODE ISLAND (Atlantic Ten).  I think Rhody will make the NCAA Tournament if they can continue to hold serve.

-OHIO STATE AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  It’s a rivalry game between two teams that look to be NCAA Tournament caliber teams.  It’s also a win that would really help out both teams.  Ohio State could use a road win, and Michigan can use it as a big bounce back win from a recent slump they were in.

-TENNESSEE AT ALABAMA (SEC).  Alabama is still within reach of the bubble, but they absolutely need to hold serve in games like this in order to get inside of it.

-VIRGINIA TECH AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  VA Tech has been in a bit of a tailspin, and really needs to get this win on the road.  If they don’t then they will probably be outside of the field when we do our next projections.

-PENN STATE AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten).  Both teams are in the rankings.  Michigan State looks like a solid protected seed, and Penn State appears to be within reach of one, especially if they can pick up a road win like this one tonight.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT KENTUCKY (SEC).  Mississippi State has been playing much better, but playing on the road at Kentucky may be swinging over their heads.  If they were to get a win like this it would boost the value of their resume through the roof.  Kentucky looks like a solid protected seed and although they are coming off of a loss they are still a very dangerous team.

-XAVIER AT DEPAUL (Big East).  Xavier’s win at Seton Hall completely changed the complexion of their resume.  If they get another road win tonight then you have to start thinking of them as a team that’s inside the bubble.  DePaul was tough out of conference, and has played well in a few games in conference, but with so few league wins the NCAA Tournament may be out of reach.

-OKLAHOMA AT TEXAS TECH (Big 12).  Oklahoma has been struggling and is squarely on the bubble.  A win like this would help them out a ton.  Texas Tech has had their struggles, but has been playing a lot better in the last couple of weeks and should be able to hold serve at home in this one.

Happy Tourney-versary!: HoopsHD interviews Mel Nowell about his teammate Bobby Knight

With the 2020 NCAA tourney tipping off next month, we will spend this month taking a walk down memory lane with a choice collection of players/coaches who are celebrating an awesome anniversary this year. From some game-winning FTs in the 1955 tourney (65th anniversary) through a 17-PT comeback win in the 2015 1st 4 (5th anniversary), these legends have all carved out a little piece of history in past Marches. We continue our series with Bobby Knight, who won championships at every stage of his career: the 1960 NCAA title as a player at Ohio State, 3 NCAA titles in a 12-year span as head coach at Indiana, and an Olympic gold medal as head coach of team USA in 1984. The 8-time Big 10 COY was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991 and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Mel Nowell (1 of Bobby’s teammates on the 1960 title team) about the 60th anniversary of becoming the only basketball team to win a national title in Ohio State history and his teammate’s path to becoming the winningest coach in D-1 history until he was passed by 1 of his former players.

You and Bobby played for Hall of Fame coach Fred Taylor at Ohio State and had a pair of future Hall of Fame teammates in John Havlicek/Jerry Lucas: what is the most important thing you ever learned from Coach Taylor, and could you tell at the time that Knight would end up becoming a coach himself? Fred had his priorities intact right from the beginning. He taught us that school came 1st and wanted us to stay eligible while doing the best we could. Basketball was also a crucial part of why we were there, and everything else came in 3rd. He was extremely well-organized in his practices and we had a fantastic conditioning program: I never recall any of us asking to be taken out of a game due to getting tired. We would run after practice and push ourselves to be in the front of the pack. Any time we needed to make a strategic change during the game it was easy because he had always prepared us for that during practice. I learned quickly after meeting Bobby that he was very intelligent: he was able to relax off the court and could easily take care of his homework and get A’s and B’s. He worked really hard in practice…to the point that some of our seniors asked Coach Taylor to tell Bobby to relax a bit!

In the magical 1960 NCAA tourney you had 4 straight wins of 15+ PTS en route to beating Cal in the title game: what did it mean to you to win a title? We beat a good Detroit team during the season and were all pleasantly tickled as we kept winning, but we did not know what would happen in the tourney after we lost at Indiana in the regular season. It felt great to win our semifinal and then watch Oscar Robertson and Cincinnati battle Cal to see who we would end up playing in the final. We started off with confident scoring and good defense due to our game plan: I backed off of the guard I was assigned to in order to help defend All-American Darrall Imhoff. Imhoff allegedly told his coach (Hall of Famer Pete Newell) at halftime that the reason he had so few rebounds is because our team had not missed many shots. It was the 1st time I knew what elation felt like: I was so overjoyed that I accidentally kicked 1 of my teammates in the chest!

In the 1973 NCAA Final 4 as head coach at Indiana, Bobby lost to 6-time defending champion UCLA: where does Bill Walton (who nearly had a triple-double with 14 PTS/17 REB/9 AST) rank among the greatest players that you have ever seen? After watching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar do his thing for 3 years I did not think it could get any better than that, but Coach John Wooden got someone in Bill who was just as big and just as good. I was amazed at how talented Bill was but did not realize until later reading Wooden’s book that it would be hard to keep them motivated because they were so great. Wooden’s fear of his players becoming overconfident proved true, as they did not win their 3rd straight NCAA title in 1974.

Take me through the 1975 NCAA tourney:
He was undefeated entering the tourney despite leading scorer Scott May breaking his arm in a win over Purdue that February: do you think that he would have won the title that year if May was healthy? I definitely think they would have won it if Scott was healthy: he was a very important part of their team. It reminded me of when Jerry Lucas got hurt in the 1962 NCAA tourney and tried to play even though he was not close to 100%.

Kent Benson had 33 PTS/23 REB in a 2-PT loss to eventual national runner-up Kentucky (which some have called 1 of the 10 best tourney games ever): how close did the Hoosiers come to winning the game? That was an example of Bobby’s great coaching when he helped turn Benson into such a productive player.

In the 1976 NCAA tourney title game after Bobby Wilkerson had to be rushed to the hospital in the 1st half, tourney MOP May scored 26 PTS to beat Michigan and clinch the title: how hard is it to beat a team 3 times in 1 season, and do you think that we will ever see another team go undefeated? It is extremely hard to win 3 in a row because the team that loses the 1st 2 has even more motivation. That was 1 of the few tourney games I remember going to in person. We saw a few years ago that Kentucky was almost able to go undefeated, but I do not think that it will ever happen again because there is too much talent throughout the sport.

In the 1979 Pan American Games in Puerto Rico as coach of team USA his team went 9-0 and won a gold medal while averaging more than 100 PPG: how on earth did he get ejected from the opening game (a 48-PT win over the Virgin Islands)? He is devoted to having his team excel: when the refs make an occasional mistake it was tough for him to not be intense even if he had a large lead. It would get to him at times and sometimes he would lose control of his emotions. You do not accomplish everything that he did without having a strong inner drive, and if he could intimidate the officials and get away with it in order to have some discretionary calls go his way then I think he would do it.

Take me through the magical 1981 NCAA tourney:
The title game was delayed following the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan: did he feel that the game should have been delayed? I do not know how he felt but you do not want the normal momentum of postseason play to stop. That being said, he has a lot of respect for our country, which caused him to feel torn.

Tourney MOP Isiah Thomas had 23 PTS/4 STL to beat North Carolina and win the title: did he feel that the Spectrum had become his lucky arena (after winning his 2nd title there in a 5-year span)? In my opinion I would not put it past Bobby to like a special place such as the Spectrum. I recall having a fond affection for a specific venue based on my own experience at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, where we won the title in 1960. When I became an NBA rookie with the Chicago Zephyrs we had a regular season road game against the San Francisco Warriors that had to be moved to the Cow Palace due to a scheduling conflict with their normal home court. I got into the game and scored a career-high 25 PTS that helped us make a comeback en route to an 8-PT win. It was the 1st time that we had beaten the Warriors since they were led by Wilt Chamberlain (who scored 37 PTS) so I definitely felt some good vibes from being on a court where I had previously had success.

At the 1984 Olympics he led team USA to an 8-0 record en route to winning the gold medal: was that the most talented team that he ever coached (Steve Alford/Patrick Ewing/Michael Jordan/Chris Mullin)? I know that he recognized talent and it was a great opportunity to put already-molded players in the right place to be successful. I am sure that he felt really good about it because not many people get the chance to work with that kind of talent.

In the 1987 NCAA tourney title game, tourney MOP Keith Smart scored 21 PTS/9-15 FG inclduing a 16-foot shot with 4 seconds left in a 1-PT win over Syracuse to clinch his 3rd title in just over a decade: where does that shot rank among the best in Hoosiers history? I remember watching it when it happened and it was not an easy shot: most players do not practice that shot because usually you have to deke someone to hit a pull-up shot. It was a fantastic shot and must be 1 of the most important shots for Indiana ever.

His 902 wins were the most in D-1 men’s history until Coach Mike Krzyzewski passed him in 2011: what made Knight such a great coach, and how proud is he of his former Army player? To win more games than anyone else is a statement unto itself and something to be extremely proud of. I think that having another winner like Mike Krzyzewski who he coached and molded made Bobby extremely proud.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Tuesday, February 4th

Ball State (12-9, 5-3) at Kent State (16-6, 6-3) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Kent, Ohio where the Golden Flashes of Kent State will play host to the Ball State Cardinals. Ball State has become a homecourt hero in conference play with home wins against Toledo, Buffalo, Miami and Ohio. However, they are only 1-3 on the road in league play – their lone win was at Eastern Michigan. Tahjai Teague is averaging 15.4 points a game and 9.0 rebounds a game.

Kent State is coming off of a win against Akron in the Wagon Wheel Rivalry (where the schools are eight miles apart and have never met in the NCAA Tournament); Philip Whittington hit a shot with 20 seconds remaining in the game to give the Golden Flashes the 68-67 victory. Kent State also has a pair of three-game winning streaks sandwiched around a three-game losing streak in MAC play. Besides Akron, their current winning streak also includes critical road wins at Buffalo and at Toledo.

Our sources tell us that our colleague Rocco Miller will be in attendance tonight – tune in to Bracketeer.org for game coverage and his current NCAA Tournament projections.

The Hoops HD Report: February 3rd

Tonight we begin in the ACC where Duke, Florida State, and Louisville continue to look like top ten teams, and Syracuse and Virginia are trying to climb their way into the tournament.  We also look ahead to Duke v North Carolina this Saturday, and break out our brand new Hoops HD Rivalry Checker!

We look at the Big 12 and how Kansas and Baylor continue to look strong, and how Oklahoma is struggling.  Arizona got some big road wins over the weekend which gives their resume a boost.  The Big Ten continues to look very strong, but the lack of road wins for everyone in the conference could be an issue come Selection Sunday.  San Diego State beat Utah State over the weekend and now has a clear shot at finishing undefeated, and Gonzaga continues to win despite the injuries.  All that, and more.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…
