He continues his series with Part 6 featuring the Hoyas’ matchup last night against St. John’s:

A new and improved pregame meal this time around: chicken parmigiana/ziti/salad and an apple pastry! I was delighted to see former Georgetown coach John Thompson on the sideline for the 1st time all season after overcoming some medical issues: stay well Coach!

Let’s huddle up and get it going:

The Red Storm played like the Red Death early on: 8 TO in the 1st 10 minutes allowed the Hoyas to open up a 25-9 lead, and it only got worse from there. St. John’s only made 2-14 threes in the 1st half while Hoyas SR G Jagan Mosely outshot the entire team by himself with a trio of trifectas, the last of which gave his team a ridiculous 45-16 scoreboard advantage after only 16 minutes of action:

His backcourt mate Mac McClung had 1 of the best 1st half performances of his career: a wintry blizzard of layups and threes gave him 16 PTS in 16 minutes to match his opponent’s scoring total, and he finished the opening stanza with a whopping 21 PTS as his team kept pouring it on to enter halftime with a 53-26 lead:

Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing had a rough week with road losses at Providence/Seton Hall by double-digits so he needed this 1 rather badly:

The only damper on an otherwise near-perfect 20 minutes was seeing SR C Omer Yurtseven get poked in the right eye just 6 minutes into the game, followed by the big man holding a towel to his face while walking to the locker room. Fortunately, he returned a few minutes later with a bandaged cut over his eye, then had the trainer clean some blood off his uniform, and he still scored 6 PTS in 12 minutes before heading back to the locker room with the rest of his squad:

My personal highlight was when the ball bounced out of bounds and I passed it back to the ref: no photo available!

St. John’s coach Mike Anderson must have given a great halftime speech because even though he benched 2 of his starters (Josh Roberts/Julian Champagnie) the rest of his guys came out swinging and went on an 11-0 run to start the 2nd half, causing Ewing to call a quick timeout and…discuss the situation with his players:

It was basically a 2-man show for the Red Storm in the 2nd half as LJ Figueroa/Rasheem Dunn combined for 25 PTS/7 REB/4 STL…but it was nowhere near enough:

The surprising 2nd half scoring star for the Hoyas was JR wing Jamorko Pickett: the only player on either team to play each of the final 20 minutes, he scored 10 of his 18 total PTS in the 2nd half on a REB/putback, a pair of layups, a long corner jump shot, and a pair of FTs:

Georgetown attempted 18 more FTs then St. John’s, had 10 more AST/7 more BLK, and dominated from start to finish in its 87-66 victory.

I did not have a chance to get a word in edgewise during Coach Anderson’s postgame press conference (thank you New York-based media members!) but got to ask Coach Ewing how his team was able to get out to a 53-26 halftime lead after being outscored by a combined 95-47(!) during the 1st half of their previous 2 conference games. He pondered his response, then smiled and said that it was due to “home cooking”. He mentioned that his team played 2 poor games on the road so he spent the past few days talking to them about not digging themselves into a deep hole. He was still concerned about his team’s 12 turnovers in the 2nd half tonight and believes that they still have to finish games if they want to win games:

That’s all for now, check back in the weeks ahead for Part 7.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day between Montana and Eastern Washington – CLICK HERE

-The biggest surprise, and probably the most cataclysmic result from last night was a game that probably almost no one saw, and that was TAMUCC’s 73-72 win at Stephen F Austin.  SFA has the road win against Duke, and seemed positioned to run the table in the Southland and land inside the bubble.  Last night’s lost to a TAMUCC team that is outside the top 300 in nearly every metric was something they could have absolutely done without.  The win at Duke is still massive, but if they had one strike then they used it last night.

-Georgetown flipped some sort of switch after really struggling in their last two games, and blew Saint John’s off the court in an 87-66 route.

-Alabama bounced back from their overtime loss at Florida and blew Mississippi State off the court.  I say this at least twice a week, but Alabama is playing really well right now.

-North Carolina lost again.  This time it was at home to Pittsburgh.  I’m now questioning whether or not the Tarheels will even make the NIT.

-East Tennessee State picked up a really nice road win at UNCG in a game that was close all throughout.  If they want to land inside the bubble, then that is the kind of game that they’ll need on their resume.

-Seton Hall picked up a big road win at Xavier in a game that they basically led from tip to buzzer.  Every time Xavier threw a punch or made a run at them, Seton Hall absorbed it and made big plays to get back control of the game.  The Hall stumbled a little bit early in the season, but they are playing really well right now.

-Illinois got a big win at Wisconsin in a game that went back and forth.  It is a huge road win for the Illini, and really boosts the quality of their resume.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-PURDUE AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  Purdue is in a tailspin and based on how they played in their last game they are showing no signs of coming out of it.  Michigan continues to look good and should be able to hold serve in this one.

-MEMPHIS AT WICHITA STATE (American).  These are perhaps the two best teams in the American.  Both are on pace to land in the top half of the bracket and could even end up as a protected seed if one of them is able to run away from the rest of the conference.  Today would be a really big resume building win for whoever pulls it off.

-MINNESOTA AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten).  Minney got off to a really rough start and although they’ve been playing well lately, they still have some ground to make up before you can start classifying them as a solid tournament team.  Michigan State got off to a somewhat slow start as well, although they got off to a slow start by top five standards, not by mere NCAA Tournament standards.  They have really been playing well in the last few weeks and should be able keep that streak going tonight.

-ARIZONA AT OREGON (Pac 12).  Arizona’s resume could still use a lot of work.  A win tonight would basically solve all of their problems and completely boost the value of their tournament profile through the roof.  Having said that, it will be much easier said than done.  Oregon is a legitimate top ten team and they are not easy to beat at home.

-WASHINGTON AT STANFORD (Pac 12).  Both teams are having solid seasons, and this is a resume building opportunity for both of them tonight that both of them could really use.

-GONZAGA AT SAN DIEGO (West Coast).  The Zags are the top ranked team, they’re good enough to win out, and if they do they should get a #1 seed.  Having said that, they have struggled in their first few conference games, so they need to come out of that funk.

-ARIZONA STATE AT OREGON STATE (Pac 12).  This is a very bubblicious game with Oregon State coming off a huge win at Colorado but still having work to do and Arizona State who…well…still has work to do.

-SANTA CLARA AT SAN FRANCISCO (West Coast).  Santa Clara has a bloated record, but has obtained it against a weak schedule.  If they want to show that they are a tournament caliber team then this is the kind of road game that they should be expected to win.

-BYU AT SAINT MARY’S (West Coast).  Both of these teams have solid resumes and have looked like tournament caliber teams, but both have room to improve, which makes this a really big game.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Thursday, January 9th

For last night’s Hoops HD Under The Radar Podcast – CLICK HERE

Montana (7-8, 3-1) at Eastern Washington (9-5, 2-1) – 9:05 PM EST (WatchBigSky.com)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Cheney, Washington where the hometown Eagles of Eastern Washington will take on perennial Big Sky favorite Montana. The Eagles started off conference play with a split against Idaho State/Weber State, although they got the reverse split with a win at Weber State followed by a loss at Idaho State. EWU won their home opener against Portland State, but had to hold on for dear life after nearly blowing a 10-point lead with 2 minutes to play. Eastern Washington is led by a trio of players that include Jacob Davison (17.6 PPG), Kim Aiken (16.4 PPG) and Mason Peatling (15.4 PPG).

Montana struggled to a 4-7 record out of conference, but they looked more like the Grizzlies of recent years by jumping out to a 3-0 record in conference with home wins against Northern Arizona and Sacramento State before a road win at Southern Utah. Northern Colorado beat Montana in their last game – the Bears blew open the game in the 2nd half after a 45-45 tie at the under-12 timeout despite a 30-point performance from Montana’s Kendal Manuel.

Under The Radar: January 8th

Chad, David, and John are back and one of the big topics of discussions was perhaps the biggest upset that an Under the Radar team has endured this year, and that was Stephen F Austin’s home loss to TAMUCC.  TAMUCC is outside the top 300 in virtually all the metrics, so the idea that SFA would lose to them at home is kind of preposterous.

The feature conference is the Colonial tonight, and although it’s early, it is already shaping up to be a really intriguing season with College of Charleston suddenly playing well, William & Mary looking like a surprise team, and Hofstra and Northeastern who can still be dangerous.

After that we focus on the other 21 UTR leagues and discuss Vermont’s continued struggles, Stony Brook’s big early conference game wins, what should be a fun season in the Ivy League, Little Rock’s surprising 5-0 in Sun Belt play, the overall strength of the MAC, and a big week in the SoCon.  And as always, we end with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

NEWS AND NOTES

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day between Stony Brook and Vermont – CLICK HERE

-Baylor just keeps winning.  They’ve won 11 straight, and last night’s win at Texas Tech was a huge one.  It was a rock fight, but an impressive win nonetheless.  They travel to Kansas this weekend and if they win that one then we are talking about a #1 seed caliber team and resume.

-Ohio State has now dropped three straight as they fell last night against Maryland.  Not a single loss in that three game stretch would be considered a bad loss (although losing at home to Wisconsin is a bit of a head-scratcher), but they still need a win for the simple sake of getting their momentum back even if their resume is still really healthy.

-Kentucky is now consistently looking like a top ten team.  It seems like we go through some version of this every year.  They start off very highly ranked, but they don’t play as well as their early season ranking and either struggle to win games or just flat out lose them.  Then Christmas rolls around, they start to get better, and by the time conference play starts they’re consistently playing like a highly ranked team.  Georgia is not ranked, but they are very good, and they played well last night.  Kentucky had to play a good game in order to beat them, and they did.  By the end of the year, no one will remember how they said Kentucky was down early on in the year.

-Villanova came from behind late to pick up a really nice road win at Creighton.  Considering that it was a true road win against a very good Creighton team that had been unbeaten at home, it was arguably Nova’s biggest win of the season so far.

-Rutgers continues to roll!!  They knocked off a really good Penn State team last night to improve to 12-3 on the year.  The one thing that they still need to do is pick up a few more road wins, but for the first time since the internet became a thing, Rutgers is on an NCAA Tournament pace!

-Providence won at Marquette last night, and has looked like world-beaters in their four games, and is now 3-0 in the Big East with two of those wins coming on the road.  I don’t know what the hell they did over Christmas, but it must have worked.

-Houston, despite not being high on anyone’s radar, is now a very quiet 12-3 after picking up a nice road win at Temple last night.  I don’t know how a Sweet Sixteen team can start off 12-3 and be making so little noise, but the Cougars have managed to do it.

-Iowa, who had been on a rampage, lost at Nebraska, which is a really bad game to lose even if it was a road game.  That should set them back some.

-Utah State was blown off the court by Air Force last night.  Utah State started off in the rankings, but at the rate their going they’ll need to win that last conference tournament game in order to make it to the NCAA Tournament.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-SAINT JOHN’S AT GEORGETOWN (Big East).  Both teams lifted some heavy weight out of conference, but both are off to 0-2 starts in conference, so this game does have a bit of a pivotal feel to it.

-NORTHWESTERN AT INDIANA (Big Ten).  It’s early, but Indiana still looks to have a very bubblicious profile, which means that they have to hold serve in games like this.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT ALABAMA (SEC).  Both teams’ resumes need some work.  Mississippi State has struggled a little bit this season, but still has ample opportunities to impress the committee if they can turn it around.  Alabama just dropped an overtime loss at Florida in a game that they appeared to be in control of, but they had won five of six before that and have been playing much better lately.

-PITTSBURGH AT NORTH CAROLINA (ACC).  Both teams are on the outside looking in and need to start stringing together some wins.

-DUQUESNE AT SAINT JOSEPH’S (Atlantic Ten).  Duquesne has a bloated record that is largely due to playing such a weak schedule, but nevertheless they can improve to 13-2 and pick up yet another road win tonight.

-SAINT BONAVENTURE AT GEORGE MASON (Atlantic Ten).  George Mason has lost two straight after an 11-1 start, and didn’t really look all that good in either game.  They seem to be running out of strikes, and have kind of hit a wall of reality now that the schedule has gotten tougher.

-FURMAN AT CHATTANOOGA (SoCon).  If Furman is going to land inside the bubble, they need to come close to winning out.

-NOTRE DAME AT NC STATE (ACC).  NC State still has work to do, and Notre Dame probably has even more work to do.  This isn’t so much a game that both teams need to win as it is a game that they need to avoid losing.

-EAST TENNESSEE STATE AT UNC GREENSBORO (SoCon).  There are three really good teams in the SoCon and these are two of them.  Having said that, they both have almost a zero margin for error if they want to be inside the bubble come March.  They need to come close to winning out, and they need this win tonight.

-FLORIDA STATE AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  Florida State just got a huge road win at Louisville and has another winnable conference road game tonight.  They are looking more and more like a protected seed.

-TAMUCC AT STEPHEN F AUSTIN (Southland).  SFA is good enough to run the table in the regular season, and if they do they should be in the NCAA Tournament whether they win the Southland Tourney or not.

-KANSAS AT IOWA STATE (Big 12).  Kansas is looking more and more like a #1 seed, and Iowa State is looking more and more like an NIT team.  They could use a huge win like this to get things turned around.

-GEORGE WASHINGTON AT SAINT LOUIS (Atlantic Ten).  SLU has a bloated record, but is still somewhat lacking in terms of quality wins, so they don’t really have much of a safety net right now and need to hold serve in games like this.

-UCF AT SMU (American).  SMU is 11-2, but it’s largely due to a weak schedule so they need to hold serve in games like this, as well as pick up some big wins in conference play, in order to have a chance at landing inside the bubble.

-SETON HALL AT XAVIER (Big East).  Seton Hall had their struggles before conference play started, but has looked really good in their first two conference games and has another big test tonight.  Xavier’s two best games have probably been their last two games despite the fact that they lost one of them.  This is a really big game for them as well.

-DUKE AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  Duke looks like a solid #1 seed caliber team that could end up as the overall #1 seed.  This is a very winnable road game for the Blue Devils, which would be their fourth true road win of the season.

-VANDERBILT AT AUBURN (SEC).  Auburn is one of just two unbeaten teams, and will likely stay that way after tonight.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT WYOMING (Mountain West).  San Diego State is one of just two unbeaten teams, and will likely stay that way after tonight.

-ILLINOIS AT WISCONSIN (Big Ten).  Both of these teams could be tournament teams, but both still have to do more than what they’ve done in order to get there.  Wisky has been playing much better these last couple weeks, and is coming off what is easily their biggest win of the year against Ohio State.  They appear to be on track after a rocky start.

-ARKANSAS AT LSU (SEC).  Arkansas is trying to improve to 13-1, and already has a big win against Indiana.  LSU has been decent, but not good, and they need to string together some wins in order to shore up their resume.

-OKLAHOMA AT TEXAS (Big 12).  Both teams have shown promise at times, but both teams still have work to do and could really use this win tonight.  Especially Texas who has lost two straight and who needs more wins of note on their resume.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Wednesday, January 8th

Stony Brook (10-6, 1-0) at Vermont (10-5, 0-0) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Burlington, Vermont for a matchup of the top two teams in the America East Conference between the hometown Vermont Catamounts and the Stony Brook Seawolves. Stony Brook had a bit of a swoon in late November with their toughest road games of the year – they had losses against CAA foes Delaware and Hofstra along with power conference foes Providence and Virginia. The Seawolves are now on a 3-game winning streak, the latest being a conference-opening 21-point win at Maine. Elijah Olaniyi leads the Seawolves with a scoring average of over 18 points a game.

Vermont got off to a hot start this season with wins at St. Bonaventure and St. John’s, fueling speculation that they could piece together an at-large NCAA-caliber profile. The Catamounts then lost five of eight games – losing to both power conference teams (Virginia and Cincinnati) and UTR teams like Rider, Yale and UNC-Greensboro. The Catamounts finished noncon play with a 3-game winning streak heading into tonight’s conference opener. Anthony Lamb leads Vermont with 17.0 PPG and 7.8 RPG.
