-If you like upsets, then 2019 ended with a bang!  Florida A&M went into Iowa State and pulled off a 70-68 shocker.  Iowa State wasn’t ranked that high, but the gap between them and FAMU was 225 spots (Iowa State – 59, FAMU – 284), and the gap in rankings such as KenPom was even larger than that.  It was one of the biggest upsets of the decade, and it was only available via Iowa State’s website with a premium subscription, so unless you decided you felt it was worth forking over a few bucks to watch the game, you probably didn’t see it.  But…WOW!!!

-Butler got another big road win against a very good Saint John’s team.  The game was interesting because Butler led by over 20 at the start of the second half, then the Johnnies went on a big run to come from behind and get the lead, but then Butler was able to close it out after falling behind.  Butler will likely remain in the top ten, and while Saint John’s didn’t get the win, I think they showed that they are good enough to get the wins that they need to between now and the end to be in the NCAA Tournament discussion.

-Georgetown fell behind huge to Providence right out of the gate and was never able to catch back up.  Providence has now blown two decent teams off the court in back to back games after getting off to a terrible start to the season.

-Temple needed to come from behind late to get a really nice road win at UCF in their conference opener.

-Miami FL, who had been playing well, trailed Clemson for most of the game, but was able to come from behind to force overtime and ended up escaping with a conference road win.  They’ve got a big one coming up this weekend against Duke at home.

-Northern Iowa suffered a somewhat head scratching upset loss to Illinois State.  UNI had looked fantastic for the entire season, and I was thinking they should be getting close to being ranked in the top 25, but they went on the road and lost their conference opener.  They can’t afford too many more like that, or one of the games that they’ll need to win will have to be that last conference tournament game.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-FRESNO STATE AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West).  San Diego State comes into this game unbeaten, and is clearly the best team in the Mountain West.  It wouldn’t shock me if they only dropped one or two the rest of the way and entered the NCAA Tournament with more than 30 wins.

-EAST CAROLINA AT WICHITA STATE (American).  Wichita State has finally cracked the rankings, and should probably be ranked even higher.  This is their conference opener, and it should end up feeling a lot like a buy game.  East Carolina just isn’t that good.

-WOFFORD AT EAST TENNESSEE STATE (SoCon).  ETSU comes in at 12-2, and although their margin for error is small, they do have a path to landing inside the bubble if they can hold serve and only lose one or two games the rest of the way.

-SOUTH FLORIDA AT SMU (American).  SMU is off to a 9-2 start, and while they still need some big wins on their resume, they’re on the pace they need to be on in order to land inside the bubble.  Holding serve in games like this is also important.

-UCONN AT CINCINNATI (American).  Both teams still have a lot of work to do, and a win today would be a step in the right direction.

-MERCER AT UNC GREENSBORO (SoCon).  UNCG has three losses, and two were on last second shots from beyond half court that just happened to go in.  If they can dominate the SoCon, they should be inside the bubble on Selection Sunday.

-MARQUETTE AT CREIGHTON (Big East).  Both teams have good overall records with each having just two losses, but both still have some work to do in conference play.  This would be a nice resume win for whoever ends up pulling it out.

-UTAH STATE AT UNLV (Mountain West).  Utah State is an impressive 13-2 and should be able to hold serve tonight and pick up a conference road win against a UNLV team that has struggled this year.

Wofford (8-5, 0-0) at East Tennessee State (12-2, 1-0) – 4:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day kicks off the New Year with a matchup of two of the powers in the SoCon – East Tennessee State will host Wofford. The Terriers got off to a slow start by losing 4 of their first 5 games in D1 play (including losses to Butler and Missouri), but have now won five out of their last six D1 games that included a win at North Carolina in mid-December. Most of the core from last season has graduated and moved on, but now Storm Murphy (14.8 PPG) and Nathan Hoover (13.6 PPG) are the top two scorers for a Terriers team that shoots a solid 39.2% from 3-point land.

While Wofford is the defending SoCon champion, East Tennessee State has the target on their backs as the favorites to win the league this year. However, there were only two games against teams from the multi-bid leagues on the Bucs’ schedule this year – one was a loss at Kansas and another was at LSU where ETSU got a decisive 74-63 victory. The Bucs also have a loss at North Dakota State, so they are pretty much  looking at winning the SoCon as their only path to advancing to the NCAA Tournament this season. Tray Boyd (14.6 PPG) and Bo Hodges (14.2 PPG) lead the way for East Tennessee State.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Tuesday, Dec 31st

NEWS AND NOTES

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day between Drake and Bradley – CLICK HERE

-It seems as though every time we want to like South Carolina, even just a little bit, they emphatically give us a reason not to.  The Gamecocks lost at home to Stetson yesterday.  In case you don’t follow our Under the Radar show, Stetson is not even expected to be one of the better teams in the Atlantic Sun.  So…not a good loss for Angry Frank and Co.

-Yale hung tough against North Carolina, but couldn’t quite get over the top as the Tarheels picked up a win in a game that kind of had a sense of urgency to it.  North Carolina has struggled this season, but this would have REALLY amplified things had they not held on to win this one.

-Seton Hall held on to beat DePaul in a thrilling game that seesawed back and forth.  It was the Big East opener for both teams.  It would have been a big win for DePaul, but I do think the Blue Demons are really good and can get the wins they need between now and the end to make the NCAA Tournament.  It was, in turn, a very good win for Seton Hall, which isn’t oftentimes how you would describe a win a DePaul, but that is certainly the case this year.

-George Mason, who was 11-1 and a team that I thought was worth paying attention to…was not worth paying attention to last night.  They were absolutely blown off the court by a TCU team that’s arguably decent (I guess), but nowhere close to being a top 25 caliber team.

-Harvard picked up an exciting overtime win at San Francisco.  The Crimson probably won’t land inside the bubble unless they run the table, so they’ll still need the auto-bid to make the field, but they are finally looking like the team that we thought they’d be at the beginning of the year.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-GEORGIA TECH AT FLORIDA STATE (ACC).  Florida State once again looks to be a top 20 caliber team and shouldn’t have too much trouble holding serve at home in this one today.

-TEMPLE AT UCF (American). Both teams have good records, and Temple actually has a few decent wins, but both still have a ton of work to do if they want to end up inside the bubble on Selection Sunday.  A win today in a game like this would be a nice start.

-NORTHERN IOWA AT ILLINOIS STATE (Missouri Valley).  This is much easier said than done, but Northern Iowa clearly looks like the best team in the Missouri Valley, and is probably good enough to run the table.  If they do, then they should be in the NCAA Tournament even if they don’t win the conference tournament.

-MIAMI FL AT CLEMSON (ACC).  Miami has won their last four games, and knocked off Temple and Illinois in that stretch.  They seem to be improving as the season goes along, and this is a winnable conference road game for them.

-GEORETOWN AT PROVIDENCE (Big East).  It’s the conference opener for both teams.  Georgetown keeps stringing together wins despite having lost several key players.  Providence has been disappointing for most of the season, but did look really impressive in their last game against Texas, so they will at least have some momentum coming into this one.

-BOSTON COLLEGE AT DUKE (ACC).  Duke is one of the best teams in the country.  Boston College…well…isn’t.

-BUTLER AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East).  Saint John’s has been one of the surprise teams out of the Big East this year, and they’re currently in a stretch where they’ve won seven in a row and knocked off Arizona and West Virginia in that stretch.  Butler has been one of the surprise teams on a national scale, and is now ranked in the top ten with several big wins and just one 1pt loss on the season.
