NEWS AND NOTES

-The Louisville-Kentucky rivalry started out like it was going to be a rockfight in favor of Kentucky, but the Cards did rally to tie the game in regulation and narrowly avoided what could have been a buzzer-beater layup by UK as a Maxey layup rimmed out. All it ended up doing was prolonging the agony as the Wildcats took advantage of missed Louisville free throws and ended up winning by 8 in overtime. It ended a 2-game losing streak for Kentucky and now leaves Chris Mack 0-2 against UK in his brief UofL tenure.

-Wisconsin came into yesterday not having won a single game away from home, but they blew Tennessee out of the water and ended up blowing out the Vols from tip to buzzer. This was UT’s first game without Lamonte Turner (out for the season with a shoulder injury) and they suddenly look like a team in disarray with losses in three of their last four games.

-UCLA was not featured in yesterday’s lineup, but they definitely will be featured today after yet another embarrassing home loss against Cal State-Fullerton. The Bruins actually came back from a 14-point deficit in the 2nd half with a 17-0 run, but Fullerton never blinked and came back themselves with a pair of clutch shots in the final minute of the game. They didn’t allow UCLA to get off a final shot, and the end result was Yosemite Sam, err, Mick Cronin throwing the entire team under the bus during his postgame show.

-Belmont hasn’t played as consistently well as they did last season that saw them sneak into the NCAA Tournament as one of the last four teams in the field, but they looked solid yesterday with a 17-point win at Western Kentucky. Barring any major speed bumps or injuries along the way, Belmont will be the clear favorite in the OVC this season.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-WEST VIRGINIA VS OHIO STATE (Game in Cleveland, OH).  This should be a fun neutral court match-up between two top 25 teams, and a great resume building opportunity for both of them.  Ohio State just got a big win against Kentucky, and has the chance to add another one to an already really good resume today.  West Virginia has just one loss on the season, but they don’t have any wins that are anywhere close to as good as this one, so this is a really good opportunity for them as well. (There’s also going to be a lot of Buckeye fans in attendance with the mother of all hangovers after last night for some reason.)

-LIBERTY AT LSU.  Liberty is unbeaten, and if they win this game there is a very good chance they will run the table and enter the NCAA Tournament without a loss.  LSU is a decent team that has the room and ability to improve.  While it’s not a win that completely blows you away, it would still likely end up being the best win on Liberty’s resume at the end of the year if they’re able to pull it off.

-DUQUESNE VS MARSHALL (Game in Cleveland OH).  Duquesne is looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season and pick up a win away from home.

-KANSAS AT STANFORD.  This is a tough road game for the Jayhawks, but if they want a #1 seed then they’re going to have to be good enough to win tough road games.  Stanford is off to a surprising (at least to me) and impressive 11-1 start with some pretty good wins on their resume.  If they were to get this one at home it would ignite even more energy and excitement around this team.

-APPALACHIAN STATE AT NC STATE.  This is a buy game, and the end result should end up looking like a buy game, but Appalachian State is off to a HOT HOT HOT start and looks to be one of the better teams in the Sun Belt, so NC State better not overlook them!

-RHODE ISLAND AT MIDDLE TENNESSEE.  Rhody has a ton of work to do, and they’re still looking for their first road win.  They have potential, but they also have a very small margin for error.

-ARKANSAS AT INDIANA.  Both teams have good records, and Indiana has a few decent wins, but for the most part both teams have bloated their records out against cupcakes, and you get the sense that both could really benefit from a win today.

-TULSA AT KANSAS STATE.  Both teams need to put together a long string of wins if they want to end up on the right side of the bubble.  A win today would be a nice start.

-HARVARD AT CALIFORNIA.  Harvard got off to a disappointing start, but has been playing better and has what looks to be a winnable road game today.

-RICHMOND AT ALABAMA.  Richmond has had a good year so far and looks like they’re good enough to be inside the bubble come Selection Sunday.  A win today would be a huge step in the right direction.  Alabama has had an unimpressive season overall, but they are playing much better now than they were during what was a slow start, and a win today would be another big step in the right direction.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Sunday, December 29th

Sam Houston State (8-4, 4-4 D1) at Rice (8-4, 6-4 D1) – 3:00 PM EST (CUSA.tv)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Houston where the Rice Owls will play host to the nearby Sam Houston State Bearkats. The Owls are 4-1 at home this year with their only loss coming against their crosstown rival and one-time SWC rival Houston Cougars. Rice also finished 3rd in the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase with wins against Milwaukee and East Carolina with their only loss being against Liberty. Trey Murphy III averages just over 14 points a game for the Owls.

Sam Houston State has an extremely bloated record with the maximum number of 4 non-D1 games alloted on their schedule, but the Bearkats have won their last three games in a row against D1 competition. Their first win was at home against a Louisiana Tech team fresh off of a win at Mississippi State, and they also won their first two Southland games at home against Northwestern State and New Orleans. SHSU does have four losses on the year (at Mississippi State, at Central Michigan, at San Francisco and at UTRGV), but none of their losses have been by greater than 9 points. Kai Mitchell averages 14.2 points a game and 7.1 rebounds a game for the Bearkats.

Hofstra (9-4, 0-0 CAA) at James Madison (7-4. 7-4 CAA) – 4:00 PM EST (FloHoops)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to the campus of JMU where the Dukes will host the Hofstra Pride in the Colonial conference opener for both teams. This game will also be a rematch of the CAA Quarterfinals from last year in which Hofstra came out victorious. Hofstra has been all over the place this season – one minute they’re losing at home to San Jose State, another minute they’re winning at UCLA, but they do come into today’s game having won five out of their last six games. Their leading scorer Eli Pemberton (17.1 PPG) was named CAA Player of the Week for his efforts against Manhattan and at Princeton.

While James Madison was picked to finish fourth in the league this year, they did actually garner 3 first-place votes in the coaches/media preseason poll. They brought in a freshman class of six players, one of whom is starting (Michael Christmas – 8.1 PPG/6.7 RPG) and three of whom have played in each game thus far this season. The Dukes recently won at Fordham thanks to a 22-point performance from Matt Lewis.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Dec 28th

NEWS AND NOTES

-Houston won this year’s Diamond Head Classic by beating Washington in the championship game and picking up a desperately needed quality win away from home.  Houston’s profile suddenly looks a lot better than it did before Christmas.

-Evansville head coach Walter McCarty has been placed on administrative leave pending a Title IX investigation – assistant head coach Bennie Seltzer will serve as interim head coach in the absence of McCarty.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-WISCONSIN AT TENNESSEE.  Wisconsin has been a rather big disappointment this year.  They’re just 6-5 with no real notable wins on their resume.  Tennessee is a very respectable 8-3 and will remain in good shape if they’re able to hold serve in this one.

-LOUISVILLE AT KENTUCKY.  Louisville is ranked #3 in the country, and they can validate that high ranking today if they’re able to knock off their rivals on the road.  Kentucky has lost two straight, but they’re starting to shoot the ball a little better and they played what was arguably their best game of the season so far in their last game where they lost to Ohio State.  A win in a game like this is what can really turn their season around.  It would certainly turn their mood around.  This is a bitter rivalry, so it means as much off paper as it does on paper.

UMass-Lowell (6-7, 5-7 D1) at Loyola-Maryland (7-4, 6-4 D1) – 7:00 PM EST (WatchStadium.com)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day resumes in Baltimore where the hometown Loyola Greyhounds host the River Hawks of UMass-Lowell. Loyola started the season 3-4 with three losses coming via bracketed and nonbracketed games in the mainland Cayman Islands Classic, but they have since gone on a four-game winning streak that includes home wins against Binghamton (and a non-D1 win) and on the road against Delaware State and Mount St. Mary’s. Andrew Kostecka averages over 21 points a game for Loyola.

The River Hawks started their season with three tough losses in their own River Hawk Invitational with losses against Jacksonville, Merrimack and Dartmouth. They have since rebounded with wins in four of their last six games; their most notable win was on the road at NJIT last week. Christian Lutete averages 19.2 points a game and 8.5 rebounds a game for the River Hawks.

The Merriest Christmas: HoopsHD interviews former Alabama A&M star Mickell Gladness

As a college player the best Christmas gift is a chance to put final exams behind you, travel back home, and celebrate with your family (I suppose a trip to Hawaii to play in the Diamond Head Classic would be a close 2nd!). As a pro player the best Christmas gift is a chance to play on TV in front of a national audience. The latter wish came true for Mickell Gladness 8 years ago today when he made his NBA debut with Miami on Christmas Day 2011 (3 minutes of action during a win at Dallas that was a rematch of the 2011 NBA Finals). HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Mickell about having a Christmas to remember and owning the greatest shot-blocking performance in NCAA history.

You grew up in Alabama: what made you choose Alabama A&M? I initially was recruited by UAB but at the time I wanted to leave my junior college they told me that I would have to walk-on: that is when Alabama A&M came along and offered me a full scholarship. The chance to play D-1 made the choice easier, as well as the fact that I did not have many other options.

On February 24, 2007 you set a D-1 record with 16 BLK in a 6-PT win over Texas Southern: do you think that anyone will ever break your record? I am very proud of that record. It has been more than a decade and no one has broken it yet so I do not think that it will ever be broken. If someone does break it then my hat goes off to them because it was not easy to set the record back then and it is probably even harder to do it now. You do not really see shot-blockers like that in the NCAA anymore.

As a junior you led the nation with 6.3 BPG: what is your secret for blocking shots? I honestly do not think it is a secret: it is just God-given talent. The most important things are timing and being fearless. I have gotten dunked on/scored on numerous times…but in my mind I will block or disturb your shot more often than you score and that is the key.

You were named 1st-team All-SWAC in 2007/2008: what did it mean to you to receive such outstanding honors? It meant that I had the respect that I was striving for from my peers (most importantly) and also the coaches around the league.

You graduated with 396 career BLK in only 3 seasons of D-1 basketball (which remains in the top-25 all-time): do you consider yourself 1 of the best shot-blockers in NCAA history? I do. I feel that if I had played at that level 1 more year then I would have been in the top-5 all-time, but I have always hung my hat on defense so I am very proud that the record book shows that.

You have spent the past decade playing pro in several countries as well as the D-League: what is the biggest difference between basketball in the US vs. basketball overseas? I think it is more about “team” basketball overseas as opposed to a lot of individual skills and 1-on-1 in the US.

In 2010 you won the D-League title with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers: what did it mean to you to win a title? I really wish that I would have played more on that team (Mickell ranked 16th on the roster with 12.8 MPG) but they still gave me my first taste of success at the professional level.

On December 25, 2011 you made your NBA debut with Miami: where does that rank among the best Christmases of your life?! It is really hard to top achieving one of your career/lifelong goals on Christmas.

You played 26 games for the Heat that year: what is your favorite memory from your time in the NBA? I think just being around the guys who everyone around the world looks up to. Being in the locker room/on the court with guys like LeBron, D-Wade, J-Howard, and Chris Bosh (to name just a few) was an experience that I will never forget. I gained a lot of knowledge and my last game against the Spurs really made me realize that I could play at a high level: not a lot of people get to do what I have done.

How long do you plan to keep playing for, and what do you hope to do in the future? Playing pro basketball overseas is a nice place to be but it is just a stepping stone for me to get back to the highest level, whether that is the NBA or Euroleague. I plan on getting back to 1 of the highest levels before I am done.
