NEWS AND NOTES

-The exempt tournaments/MTEs get underway today.  Be sure and check out our Special Hoops HD Report where we run through all of them – CLICK HERE

-The biggest news from Yesterday probably happened off the court.  James Wiseman was handed a 12 game suspension, which included the two he already served, but will be allowed to return to Memphis on January 12th and play for the rest of the season.  They didn’t need him last night as they got by Little Rock, although the game was a little closer than expected.

-Louisville and North Carolina also played with their food in their buy games, but managed to blow it open by the end.

-UMass is 5-0.  They haven’t exactly played a rough schedule, but they did manage to beat a pretty decent Northeastern team, and aren’t looking like the doormat of the Atlantic Ten that I thought they’d be.  I don’t think they’ll contend for first place, but they may be able to make some noise this year.

-Georgia held on to beat Georgia Tech at home, and remains unbeaten on the season.  They head into Maui next week.  We will really see what they are made of then.

-Boise State needed overtime, but held on to beat BYU in a game that went back and forth and that was really fun to watch.  I’m not sure if either one of these teams will be in the NCAA Tournament picture at the end of the season, but we will continue to follow both of them until we are sure that they aren’t.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-VILLANOVA VS MIDDLE TENNESSEE (Mytrle Beach Invitational).  Middle comes into this game at 3-1, which isn’t bad, but they don’t have any wins anywhere close to the caliber that this one would be.  Having said that, Nova has only managed to win buy games up to this point.  This event is a chance for them to add some decent wins away from home.  If they lose this one then they’ll end up facing weaker competition and probably won’t get that chance.

-MISSOURI STATE VS MIAMI FL (Charleston Classic).  Missouri State is off to a so-so start, but they did look good the other night against Xavier and are still the favorites to win the MVC.  If they want a chance to land inside the bubble then they’ll need to pick up some wins in this tournament.

-FLORIDA VS SAINT JOSEPH’S (Charleston Classic).  Saint Joe’s probably has the better wins so far seeing how they won at UConn and Florida didn’t.  The Gators have not looked all that good this year, but if they can do well in this tournament it should snap them out of it and get them back on track.  We didn’t expect much from Joe’s this season, but this is also an opportunity to make quite a bit of noise early on.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE VS TULANE (Myrtle Beach Invitational).  Both teams are unbeaten, but both are also untested.  They will be tested in this tournament, though, so we should know a little more about them by the time it’s over.

-OHIO VS BAYLOR (Myrtle Beach Invitational).  Up to this point Baylor has really only won buy games.  This tournament is a chance for them to begin to build their resume.

-DUQUESNE VS INDIANA STATE (Junkando Jam).  Duquesne is off to a 3-0 start and stands a very good chance of being 6-0 by the end of this tournament.  Their opponents haven’t exactly been high caliber, but they are worth keeping an eye on this year.

-XAVIER VS TOWSON (Charleston Classic).  Xavier and Florida both started off the season highly ranked, but neither has looked all that good yet.  Xavier should get by Towson, but they’ll need to play better (at least on offense) than they have in their last two games.  A loss would probably mean lower level competition in the next two games, which wouldn’t look as good on their resume.

-TEXAS VS GEORGETOWN (2K Empire Classic).  Texas already has a nice win at Purdue and can pick up another win of note away from home against a Georgetown team that we thought would be good this year (and still might), but that hasn’t really shown it yet.  Having said that, this is the kind of game that could be a big breakout game for Georgetown if they were to win it.

-UTAH AT COASTAL CAROLINA (Myrtle Beach Invitational).  This is part of an MTE, but because Coastal is the host I’m pretty sure this one is going in the books as a true road game for the Utes.  They’ve already collected a couple of decent wins against Nevada and Minnesota and can continue to add to that throughout this event.

-CHARLOTTE AT APPALACHIAN STATE.  Charlotte has two feelgood wins against Davidson and Wake Forest.  Both came at home, though, and neither of them was so good that it persuaded me to go all in on Charlotte just yet.  But, they certainly have my attention and if they keep it up then I’ll become a believer.  This is a winnable game against a so-so App State team that has struggled on the road, but has been HOT HOT HOT at home with a 2-0 record.

-UC IRVINE AT TCU.  This is a buy game, but TCU is unbeaten and UC Irvine is pretty good, so it should be a good match-up.

-TOLEDO AT NOTRE DAME.  Toledo is a team that we really like out of the MAC, and they come into this one at 3-1 with a chance to pick up a notable road win.  Notre Dame hasn’t lost since their opener against North Carolina where they played really well, but they also haven’t really been tested either.

-DUKE VS CALIFORNIA (2K Empire Classic).  Cal is unbeaten and is better than they were a year ago, but it’d be a stretch to even think of them as an NIT team at this standpoint, especially if you watched any of their last game against Prairie View A&M, which was an eye gougingly bad basketball game.  But, they are unbeaten.  Duke comes in Ranked #1, which makes sense since they already have a neutral floor win against Kansas and can pick up a few more in this event.

-NEW MEXICO AT NEW MEXICO STATE.  It’s the first installment of this annual home and home rivalry!!  It’s always intense, and it should be again this year.  New Mexico is coming off a close, tough loss to UTEP, and New Mexico State has battled injuries this season, so both could really use this game for what it would mean on paper as well as the bragging rights that would come with it.

-BUFFALO VS UCONN (Charleston Classic).  Buffalo has struggled out of the gate, and UConn has struggled at times, but they still have that really nice win against Florida.  If they can win tonight and pick up another win or two in this event (well, especially if they pick up two more), then they’ll be off to a much better start than any of us expected.

BUY GAMES

-North Florida @ Iowa
-Alabama A&M @ Clemson
-Arkansas Pine Bluff @ Pittsburgh
-Tennessee Tech @ Winthrop – Not technically a buy game, but Winthrop won’t get much credit if they win it
-Tennessee State @ Texas Tech
-UMES @ Oklahoma
-Central Michigan @ Minnesota – with three close losses, Minney needs a game like this just to get their mental health back.
-South Dakota State @ Arizona
-Green Bay @ Wisconsin
-Hofstra @ UCLA
-William & Mary @ Stanford – Bill & Mary came very close to beating Oklahoma in their last game, so Stanford better not overlook them

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to the Heartland where the Drake Bulldogs will play host to the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh. Amidst a pair of non-D1 wins thus far. Lehigh’s only win against a D1 program thus far was a 74-70 victory at Albany two weeks ago. Drake’s season has also been chalky so far – amidst a loss at Cincinnati, they do have a pair of buy wins against Kennesaw State and Kansas City (formerly UMKC) along with a non-D1 victory against Simpson College. Tonight will be the Bulldogs’ final tuneup before they travel south for the Gulf Coast Showcase next week. Liam Roberts averages 13.0 points a game and 5.3 rebounds a game.

Still Hanging with the Hoyas: Part 2

HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will spend the upcoming months covering several Georgetown basketball home games, with a very special reward coming in March. Part 1 was published earlier this month:

https://hoopshd.com/2019/11/09/still-hanging-with-the-hoyas-part-1/

He continues his series with Part 2 featuring the Hoyas’ matchup earlier this week against Georgia State as part of the 2K Empire Classic:

The best way to warm up on a cold night is a pregame meal featuring a hot pasta buffet: 2 kinds of noodles/3 kinds of meat/3 kinds of sauce! A quick pregame huddle in the rarely-popular teal alternate uniforms and away we go:

The Hoya faithful had been concerned the past 2 game while watching Mac McClung shoot 2-17 from the field but he restored their fair early with a lefty layup/3/pull-up J in the 1st 3 minutes. Omer Yurtseven has been a double-double machine all month and kept up the pace with a REB/putback and a REB/follow dunk. Coach Patrick Ewing did not appear to love his fellow 7-footer taking/missing his 1st 3-PT shot of the year but I suppose he has to give him a little leeway after he made 22-44 from behind the arc as a sophomore at NC State prior to his DC-area transfer:

Usually when your big man gets into early foul trouble it is a bad thing, but when Georgia State big man Joe Jones III had to come out after picking up 2 fouls in the 1st 4 minutes it turned out to be a good thing for Coach Rob Lanier. The player who subbed in for him was Josh Linder, who proceeded to have a huge 1st half with 12 PTS/8 REB courtesy of hard work in the paint that led to plenty of tip-ins/layups:

His teammate Corey Allen had 20 PTS in their previous game at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and kept it going with a pair of threes to match Linder with 12 PTS in the 1st half and give the Panthers a 39-33 halftime lead:

The Hoyas have now been outscored in 5 of the 7 halves they have played this season so unless they can turn things around they seem destined for trouble.  During the break I got to say hello to Georgia State Associate AD Mike Holmes, who has hooked me up with several interview subjects over the past few years. I could not pursue my passion without the kindness of athletic staffers like Mike so kudos to those who help out HoopsHD!

Linder and Allen continued to shine in the 2nd half: the former caused Yurtseven to pick up his 4th foul with 5:44 left in the game and had a double-double of his own with 17 PTS/11 REB, while the latter finished with a team-high 21 PTS by making a variety of scoops/jumpers/leaners. They also received some help from 3 teammates who finished in double-figures.

Very different team/eerily same story for Georgetown: the 2 leaders from the 1st half kept playing well and they had 3 teammates who finished in double-figures. McClung had only scored 24 PTS all season long but exploded for 25 PTS in under 25 minutes (including 11-11 FT):

Yurtseven kept kicking butt inside with hook shot after hook shot for his 4th straight double-double (15 PTS/13 REB), including an almost-incomprehensible 11 offensive REB (which matched the total of the entire Georgia State team and helped him leap into 1st place in the entire country with 25 offensive REB in his 1st 4 games!). It was as if he was telling the Panthers defense, “Talk to the hand!”

The key stat that allowed Georgetown to win the game by a score of 91-83 was their fantastic FT shooting. Usually I only show photos of players shooting FTs because that is the best angle I have while sitting on the baseline press row but in this case it tells the story of the game, as the Hoyas’ starting 5 made 34 of its 1st 36 FT attempts and their team doubled up the Panthers by a count of 40 FTM vs. 20 FTM:

I did not get the chance to ask Coach Ewing or his 2 postgame press conference players any questions but I asked Coach Lanier about Linder. Through the team’s 1st 4 games this month his JR PF has had 2 double-doubles and 2 other games where he did not make a single FG so I inquired whether he has figured out who the real Linder is. He stated that tonight was a great opportunity for Linder to grow as a player and that the explanation for his 2 sub-par games was the use of a smaller lineup (vs. Duke) and the fact that he was hurt in the season opener (vs. Brewton-Parker). He felt that the double-doubles are more indicative of Linder’s productivity:

That’s all for now, check back in the weeks ahead for Part 3.

NEWS AND NOTES

-The story of the night seems to be how good Vermont looked at Virginia in a losing effort.  After a total defensive grind in the first half, the second half saw more scoring (at least by the standards of playing against Virginia) and with less than five minutes to go Vermont was right in the game.  Anthony Lamb hit 7 threes and ended up with 30pts, but there was just a lid on the basket even for him in the final minutes as Virginia held on.  Vermont has reason to be optimistic.  Just about every remaining game they have appears to be winnable, and although the margin for error for UTR teams is very small due to their limited opportunities at quality wins to impress the committee, it isn’t totally non-existent.  If they can blow through the rest of the season and avoid stubbing their toes more than once or twice, they could be inside the bubble at the end.

-East Tennessee State, another UTR team that we’ve got our eyes on, went into Kansas and fell down by 18, but cut it as close as 5 in the second half, but just couldn’t keep pace.  Kansas ended up winning 75-63 in an expected result where ETSU played well, but not well enough to beat a top 5 caliber team on the road.

-Gonzaga had more trouble with UT Arlington than one would expect, but held on to win.  They had been blowing through their buy games prior to last night.

-Rhode Island trailed for much of the game against Nicholls, and just when I was ready to start praising Nicholls for picking up yet another scalp in a road buy game, Rhody finally got it together in the last three minutes and pulled out the close 70-65 win.

-I thought Furman would go into Alabama and win.  I was wrong.  They did get a lead in the second half, but Bama was clearly the better looking team and although it was a buy game I still think it was a nice win for the Tide.

-UTEP v New Mexico was a really fun game between two unbeaten teams.  UTEP has been really bad for several years in a row now, and I don’t think their fans have quite yet figured out that they are good again and that it will be fun to come to the games again.  There was a day where that place was rammed full every night, and we may be seeing that again soon.  The game went back and forth, and ended in a 66-63 win for UTEP after a mid court shot to tie the game was waved off due to not getting it off before the buzzer.  Had it counted you would have seen it all over SportsCenter this morning.

-Northwestern lost at home.  To Radford.  Northwestern’s home losses now include UC Riverside, Merrimack, and now Radford.  But…they did beat Providence!!  That certainly doesn’t have the makings of an NCAA Tournament profile, but it is shaping up to be a profile that is very much unlike any that we have ever seen before.  Could this be a Stallings Award winner?  Or did the win against Providence hurt their chances at winning the Stallings?

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-GEORGIA TECH AT GEORGIA.  Georgia Tech, despite having a postseason ban, won their season/conference opener and comes into this game without a loss.  Georgia is also unbeaten, but hasn’t really been tested yet.  This is usually a fun game, and I’m glad that the two usually play it early in the season to get some excitement around the basketball programs this early.  It should be another fun one tonight.

-BELMONT AT LIPSCOMB.  It’s the Battle of the Boulevard!!  This is one of the best/most unique UTR rivalries in all of college basketball, and since both teams have been really good in recent years it has made it a lot more fun.  Lipscomb is just 1-3 on the season and is having to rebuild quite a bit, partly because their former coach is now the head man at Belmont.  Belmont lost their opener, but has won three straight since then, including a decisive win at Boston College.  Tonight is a chance to beat their rivals and pick up another road win, even if it is just three miles (I think) down the Boulevard!

-ARKANSAS STATE AT COLORADO STATE.  I’m not a betting man, but if I were I wouldn’t bet on either one of these teams long term, but since both come into this game with just one loss then it’s worth paying attention to.  For now.

-UC SANTA BARBARA AT OREGON STATE.  This game won’t raise too many eyebrows, but it is one of the Big West favorites going on the road to face an Oregon State team that I still think can end up in the NCAA Tournament.  So, maybe this is worth paying attention to a little more than what people realize.

-BYU AT BOISE STATE.  This is a big game for BYU because it is a winnable road game.  It’s a big win for Boise State because they desperately need to bounce back from a bad season last year, and they’ve already lost two games.  A win tonight against a pretty good BYU team should help turn things around.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT SAN DIEGO.  I like this San Diego State team and think this is another winnable road game for them, but this is a rivalry and is sometimes more competitive than what most people expect it to be.

-SAINT MARY’S AT FRESNO STATE.  SMC can pick up another win away from home, and the more of those a team has the better their resume looks.

BUY GAMES

-Chattanooga @ Florida State
-SC Upstate @ Louisville
-Alabama State @ Tennessee
-Rider @ UMass – Umass can get to 5-0
-SFA @ Rutgers
-Princeton @ Indiana

Northern Kentucky (3-1, 2-1 D1) at Ball State (3-1, 2-1 D1) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to a place you wouldn’t expect – while tonight does include Round 1 of the Battle of the Boulevard (Belmont/Lipscomb), tonight’s feature actually involves the Northern Kentucky Norse and the Ball State Cardinals. NKU had a bit of a rocky start to the Darrin Horn with a loss at Missouri, but the Norse have rebounded with wins at Coastal Carolina and their home opener against Coppin State. Four players lead a balanced attack and average double figures in points for NKU – they are led by Tyler Sharpe (16.3 PPG), Dantez Walton (12.5 PPG), Karl Harris (12.5 PPG) and Trevon Faulkner (11.5 PPG).

Ball State also has an eerily similar resume to NKU – both have a non-D1 win and both teams are 1-1 on the road thus far. The Cardinals lost to Evansville but did rebound with a win at Illinois-Chicago. Now, Ball State begins a five-game homestand that will also bring teams like Loyola-Chicago down to Muncie. Tahaji Teague leads the Cards with 17.8 points a game and 7.8 rebounds a game.
