Chad, David, and Stalica run through all 22 UTR Conferences.  Last year we saw three UTR teams that landed inside the bubble of the NCAA Tournament, and five that made it as far as the Round of 32.  We discuss which teams we think can make a splash on the national scene, most notably a New Mexico State team that returns four starters from a 29 win team that came very close to upsetting Auburn, Liberty who returns four starters from a team that made the Round of 32, East Tennessee State and Furman out of the SoCon, and Harvard who looks really strong out of the Ivy League.  All that, and more…

COMMENTS FROM DAVID.  Radford won 22 games last year, finished in a tie for first-place, and advanced to the conference championship game.  With three starters back and a very talented backcourt, they are one of the favorites to win the league again this year.

Gardner Webb, who was last year’s conference tournament winner, is another team to watch for with three starters back.  They have a really strong player in Jose Perez, and should get a lot of help from their bench.  It wouldn’t shock me if they returned to the Big Dance this year.

Charleston Southern has four starters back from a team that looked pretty good in the latter part of last season.  The problem is the one guy that isn’t back was easily their top player.  Still, the Buccaneers should be able to have some success in the league this year and I think they’ll finish much closer to the top than they do the bottom.

Pat Kelsey is entering his 8th year at Winthrop, which is kind of hard to believe.  They do lose quite a bit from last year’s team, including what was perhaps their top player, but they have some newcomers that look pretty good, and some of the guys from last year should be able to step into bigger roles.

Hampton enters their second year in the Big South.  They had quite a bit of roster turnover, but also look to have a strong backcourt and should be able to make some noise in the league this year.

Head coach Griff Aldrich is in just his second year at Longwood, and the fact that he managed a winning season last year after the team had failed to win more than 10 for the past four years is a noticeable improvement.  I’m not ready to say that Longwood can contend for first place, but with three starters back I do think they can continue to improve.  This is a program that has never experienced success since making the move up to D-1, and it’s fun to see that they are getting better.

There isn’t much buzz around this High Point team, but Tubby Smith is entering his second year and while they did lose some of their top players, they got enough coming back and coming in to make me think they can be better than expected.

It can be frustrating when you’re trying to build a program.  Presby won 20 games last year, and had one of the better players in the conference in Adam Flagler, and really appeared to be heading in the right direction.  The problem was their head coach left for another job, and Flagler transferred to Baylor.  Three starters are back, and they should at least be decent again this year, but had they retained everyone I would have liked their chances to finish near the top of the league.

Campbell tied for first place last year, and had one of the most exciting players in the country in Chris Clemons.  The problem is that Clemons is gone along with two other starters.  The Camels look to be in rebuilding mode this year.

UNC Asheville has four starters back!  They will have experience!  The problem is that the number of games they won last year is equal to the number of starters they have returning.  It will likely be a long year for the Bulldogs again this year.

USC Upstate isn’t looking a whole lot better than UNCA this year.

We’ve got four preview shows in one post!!  From top to bottom, these four leagues aren’t as good as the Power Five and Big East Conferences in the sense that they typically don’t have more than half the teams in position to make the NCAA tournament.  But, they do routinely send multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament, have teams ranked in the Top 25, and have teams contending for and earning protected seeds.

  5. Cal State Fullerton
  6. Long Beach State
  7. UC Riverside
  8. UC Davis

MEDIA DAY PRESEASON ALL-BIG WEST TEAM

Lamine Diane – Cal State Northridge, SO F
Terrell Gomez – Cal State Northridge, JR G
Max Heidegger – UC Santa Barbara, SR G
Evan Leonard – UC Irvine, SR G
Dikymbe Martin – UC Riverside, SR G

NOTES FROM DAVID.  UC Irvine had a spectacular season last year where they won 31 games and advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.  Just two starters are back, but they’ve got several guys who have seen quality minutes in the past that can step up, along some freshmen who should be able to help them out.  I don’t think they’ll be as good as they were a year ago, but they should once again be one of the best, if not THE best, in the Big West.

Look out for UC Santa Barbara.  They could be better than you think.  They had one really bad week in February last year where they lost three games, and two of those inexplicably came against crappy teams.  Other than that, they were really good.  Four starters are back, and they could be in store for a huge year this year.

Cal State Northridge has four starters back, and two of those guys earned preseason all conference honors.  Mark Gottfried enters year two of his era, and I think you’re going to see some major improvements.  I agree with the media that they could finish in the top three, and could be very hard to beat.

Cal State Fullerton returns three starters from a team that tied for second, but two of their top scorers and all around players are gone so we could see them take a step back this season.

Hawai’i has three starters back, and a fair amount of depth.  It is seemingly always hard to win at Hawai’i no matter how good they are.  Having said that, the Warriors oftentimes have just as much difficulty winning away from home.

I thought the voters were a little rough on UC Davis, but only a little.  They won just nine D-1 games a year ago, but three starters are back and they did have a pretty good stretch close to the end of the year to indicate that they were at least going in the right direction.  I do like Jim Les as a coach, and with the addition of some quality JUCO guys this should be a better team this year.

It’s hard to believe that Dan Monson is about to begin his 13th season at Long Beach State.  It’s also somewhat surprising that while he’s had a couple of really good teams, they haven’t been able to remain consistently good.  With just two starters back from last year’s team, and nine new players this year, it’s hard to say with any certainty how good The Beach will be this season.

UC Riverside returns four starters, but they win just seven games against D-1 teams last year, so chances are they’ll once again be closer to the bottom than they are to the top.

I expect Cal Poly to repeat as this year’s last place team.

Keith Braxton – Saint Francis University, SR, G
Raiquan Clark – Long Island, SR, G/F
Adam Grant – Bryant, SR, G
Jahlil Jenkins – Fairleigh Dickinson, JR, G

NOTES FROM DAVID.  We at HoopsHD absolutely love this league!!  The rivalries are great, the venues where the games are played are small, but intimate and full of energy, and because the conference tournament is at campus sites, the games during the regular season really matter.  More often than not the winner of this league ends up on the #16 line, but it’s still a fun league!

Long Island (formerly the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds) begins their first year after being rebranded as the Sharks as the favorites to win the conference.  All five starters are back from a team that was really playing well down the stretch last season.  They went 4-1 in their last five before losing in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Fairleigh Dickinson was last year’s champions, and with three starters back they should finish at or near the top of the league again this year.  I’m a little surprised they were picked as low as 4th in the preseason poll.  Replacing their starting PG won’t be easy, but they have two really good outside shooters in Kaleb Bishop/Xzavier Malone-Key.  They should also get some help from their bench, and from a fairly decent group of newcomers.

Sacred Heart, who finished in a tie for 3rd last year, has four starters back and is another team that will likely contend for first place.  They do need to replace their top scorer, but a lot of the returning players were also capable of scoring, and they should get some help from their bench as well.

Saint Francis U tied for first last year, but fell short in the NEC Championship game and missed out on the Big Dance.  They are also looking to replace their top scorer, but have three starters back and should once again be good if they can get some guys to step up in their new roles.

Robert Morris also has four starters back from a team that finished the season strong.  They had a really rough stretch in February, but outside of that they looked pretty good.  If they can consistently play up to their ceiling they could potentially be a surprise team this year.

Bryant has some new players coming in that are pretty good, but they may need to get some experience before we can start talking about them as a league contender.

Saint Francis Brooklyn lost their two top players, but they do have three starters back as well as some other pieces.  Still, they’ll need some guys to step up this year if they’re going to be competitive.

Mount Saint Mary’s has all five starters back, but they won just seven total games a year ago, and while the experience should help them out some, they could have also probably benefited from some new players.

Wagner and Central Connecticut also look to be in rebuild mode.

And Merrimack joins the league and will begin their transition up from D-2!  Four starters are back from a team that won 22 games at the D-2 level last year.

NOTES FROM DAVID.  I’ll just start by saying that I like this league.  I’ve got two feelings about it that probably come off as contradictory.  I think it deserves more credit and attention than it gets, but I also think it routinely underachieves.  It is a basketball-centric conference that doesn’t play football of any kind, and is arguably the second-best basketball centric conference behind the Big East (although the WCC is in the discussion).  A good Atlantic Ten, with basketball-centric schools located in fairly big markets, should be good for college basketball as a whole.

VCU is the preseason favorite, and I completely agree with the decision.  With four starters back from a team that won 25 total games, lost just two conference regular season games, and safely made the NCAA Tournament, it’s hard to imagine that the Rams won’t be even better this year.  All five of their (likely) starters are capable of scoring, and they’ve got even more help from what is a fairly deep bench.  This isn’t just the best team in the A-10, it is a likely top-25 caliber team that should land inside the top half of the NCAA Tournament bracket.

Davidson returns five starters from a team that won 24 games a year ago, so it’s easy to see why the media and coaches like them.  When it comes to being a team that was solidly inside the bubble, though they really weren’t anywhere close.  They should be better this year just based on their experience, and they have a fantastic head coach in Bob McKillop, and they are a very well-balanced and well-coached team that can go deep into their bench.  Having said that, one of the things they failed to do last year was consistently play well against good teams.  It goes without saying that they’ll have to do that this year if they want to safely make the field.

Dayton may be a dark horse this year.  Not just in the conference, but on a national scale.  Anthony Grant enters his third year, and while the Flyers haven’t experienced anywhere near the same success under him yet as they did under Archie Miller, the key word there is “YET.”  Grant is a great defensive-minded coach, and the Flyers improved from 14 wins two years ago to 21 wins last year.  With three starters back, and some guys that saw quality minutes off the bench last year, and two key transfers who are eligible this year, the Flyers may be back in the Dance this March.

Rhody pretty much dominated the league in the latter part of the Dan Hurley era, and although they took a major step back last season, there is reason to be optimistic.  There was a stretch in the middle of conference play where Rhody went just 1-7, but they followed that up with six straight wins before losing in the semis of the A-10 Tourney.  With all five starters back, and a clear sign of improvement down the stretch, the Rams should be pretty good this year.

Duquesne is another potential dark horse.  That’s a strange thing to say, but they won 19 games a year ago, have four starters back, and have a really good coach in Keith Dambrot whose mark on the program is already obvious.  They did have a rather disappointing finish where they lost four out of their last five, but it was still a big improvement over what we normally see out of Duquesne, and with so many pieces coming back I think they can have an even bigger year this year.

Had the season started in January last year, Saint Bonaventure would have easily made the tournament.  The problem was they won just four games prior to January 9th, and just one of those came against a team with a winning record…BARELY.  But, they really got it turned around, did well in the latter part of conference play, and nearly beat Saint Louis in the A-10 Championship game, which would have put them in the Big Dance.  With three starters back from last year, a talented freshman class from a year ago that now has a year’s experience, and some pretty talented newcomers this year, the Bonnies have a lot of reasons to be excited.

I probably shouldn’t talk about Richmond.  Every year I say that I think they’re going to be good.  Every year, I’m seemingly wrong.  I think Chris Mooney is a good coach (and there are times I ask myself why I think that, but I do), and they have all five starters back from a year ago, but….I say I like this team as a dark horse every year, and every year they let me down.  But, they’ve got ALL FIVE STARTERS BACK!!  The experience should make them a better team!  Maybe this is the year!

Saint Louis won the auto-bid last year, but in all likelihood would not have gotten a bid to the Big Dance had they not won the conference tournament, so as a whole the season was a little disappointing.  Only two starters are back, and although they should have a very strong frontcourt, I don’t see them really challenging for the top of the standings this year.

Expectations were high for George Mason a year ago, but they ended up having a rather bland season.  It’s hard for me to get all that excited about them this year even with three starters returning.

UMass actually has a couple of impressive looking freshmen who are joining the roster, and they do return three starters, so they should be a little better this year, but not so much better that I expect them to be relevant.  This program should be better than what it is.  We have seen it succeed at a high level before, and I can’t help but feel they should be consistently better than what they are.  But…they’re not.

I think La Salle has a pretty good shot at finishing 4th this year!!  4th In the Big Five.  They won just ten games a year ago, and although they should be a little better this year, I don’t see them getting into the top half of the conference standings.

The Jamion Christian era is underway at George Washington!!  It could be a very long first year for him.

The Billy Lange era is underway at Saint Joe’s!!  It could be a long first year for him.

Last, and least, I end with a Fordham rant.  How is this program so awful??  For the better part of the last 25 years, Fordham has performed at a level to where if they played in the Patriot League or the NEC, they’d consistently finish in the bottom half.  In the NYC/NJ area, the teams that routinely outperform them, BY A LOT, include Rutgers, Seton Hall, Saint John’s, Iona, Manhattan, Wagner, Long Island, and Saint Francis Brooklyn.  Hell, even Columbia looks like a top-200 team every now and then.  Fordham seemingly never does.  How in the hell can a university with the kind of reputation that Fordham has, and the kind of loyal, successful, and centrally located alumni that they produce, be located in the middle of New York City and ALWAYS be THAT BAD!!??  More often than not they are WAAAY outside the top-200.  You’d think that just on accident they’d be able to put together a decent team every now and then!!  Okay, rant over.
