This week, it is David Dorman’s turn to build the staff bracket!! His notes and comments are posted below, along with some others from the staff…

COMMENTS FROM DAVID DORMAN:
-Yes it is only Mid-December but Bracketology is in full swing. The SEC, Big 12 and Big 10 are flexing their muscles and scooping up most of the at-large bids. Yes 13 bids for the SEC seems extreme but if you look at what each team did individually they absolutely deserve spots in the tournament if the bracket release was today. The Big 10 was next with 10 bids and the Big 12 got 8 bids.
-When conference play starts to heat up we will see many of these teams in these 3 conferences start to take a bunch of losses. It will be very interesting if teams below .500 in conference play can get at-large bids. With unbalanced conference schedules it will be very interesting to see how the committee approaches handing out at-large bids. Road conference wins this season will be like gold bars, extremely valuable.
-I believe the conference tournaments will be more important than in years past to see which teams can separate from the pack at season’s end and show they belong in the Big Dance. The regular season standings will be bunched up and your last few data points (conference tournament games) on each team’s sheet will be huge. I expect to see many play-out conference tournament games come March.
-The ACC and Big East each received 4 bids and Butler was my last team in. Drake could have easily been in over Butler and I would not argue against that.
-I wish everyone of our great Hoopshd.com fans a very Happy, Healthy & Safe Holiday Season and enjoy the games!
COMMENTS FROM THE PUPPET:
-Three teams on the #1 line from the same conference may seem crazy, but it’s not impossible. It has actually happened before. And, if you look at what each of the three teams on David’s #1 line have done so far, those are all looking like possible #1 seed profiles, especially at this time of year. They’ve all won multiple big games away from home.
-I’m not sold on Cincinnati yet. I know Dorman has them seeded below their ranking, but up until now all they’ve really done is win home buy games and a few road games that might as well have been buy games. Now, the two road wins is at least SOMETHING, but they were against teams that will almost assuredly be nowhere within a thousand miles of the NIT. My mind may change as the season goes along, but right now I’m just not sold on them.
-A team I do like is Dayton. They beat Connecticut into a coma out in Maui, and while they do have two losses, they were against really highly ranked teams in close games. Cincinnati and Dayton do play each other soon, so I guess the matter will be settled then, but I’d have Dayton higher right now.
