MOCK COMMITTEE NOTES

CLICK HERE to view a screenshot of the board from last night, as well as a write up from last night’s meetings.  We have done a little more scrubbing, and now have Creighton in the field as the last team over Temple, who we had originally put in.

3:30pm, est – We have considered the Big Ten and American championship games, and have determined that for all four teams a win or a loss won’t change the complexion of any of the profiles.  Houston has beaten Cincinnati twice.  Beating them a third time would only be repeating what they’ve already done, and if they don’t win then they shouldn’t be punished since they’ve already done it twice.  Same with Michigan State and Michigan.

5:25pm, est – If we had it to do over again, we would probably move Cincinnati up to the #6 line.  A win away from home against a top ten team does change the complexion of their resume.  But, it’s too late for us to make the change, and even if it isn’t we aren’t too worried about it.

MOCK COMMITTEE BRACKET.  It’s not what we think the committee WILL do (Jon Teitel does that), but it’s what we think they SHOULD do

The 2019 Hoops HD Selection Committee: Saturday, March 16th

Tonight, our Hoops HD Selection Committee met via Zoom conference call to finish filling out our NCAA Tournament field – the next set of tasks included building the master seed list and doing an initial scrub of the seed list.

The first order of business was filling out open spots in the field – Washington, St. John’s, Ohio State, Belmont, Temple and Indiana were voted into the field. Indiana went back onto the Under Consideration board once Oregon stole a bid after beating Washington to win the Pac 12 Tournament. The teams Under Consideration were also scrubbed down to ten teams (and Handy Handerahan was also added onto the board by a drunk puppet) – Memphis, Davidson and Oregon (assuming a loss to Washington at the time) were removed at the time.

After those teams were voted into the field, we resumed building the seed list two lines at a time. Contingency teams from the Atlantic 10, Sun Belt, Ivy League, Big West, Pac-12 and WAC were added to the field since there were still championship games in progress on Saturday night. Our seed list was down to 71 teams at the end of the night after the Big West went final. After the seed list was built, the committee did a scrub of the entire seed list. Motions would need a second from a committee member to be considered and could pass by a simple majority vote.

This is the updated board:

Tomorrow will be the final day of the Hoops HD Selection Committee – additional motions in regards to teams in the field can be considered, and a further scrub of the seed list will be in order. Contingency brackets won’t be needed this season thanks to Houston/Cincinnati and Michigan/Michigan State matchups in the final conference championship games, so the final bracketing should take place mid-afternoon. Stay tuned to Hoops HD tomorrow afternoon for our final bracket!

Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews Iona JR PF Tajuan Agee

Usually when you think about basketball players from Chicago named “Agee” the 1st person who comes to mind is Arthur Agee, who was 1 of the 2 Chicago-area players featured in the 1994 documentary “Hoop Dreams” (later named by the International Documentary Association as the all-time greatest documentary film). However, he is starting to get some competition from Iona JR PF Tajuan Agee, who scored 18 PTS on Monday in an 81-60 win over Monmouth in the MAAC tourney title game as his team earned an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament. The Gaels are no stranger to the postseason, having now claimed the school’s 6th NCAA tourney bid in the past 8 years. Earlier this week HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with Tajuan about winning 10 games in a row and what it feels like to make the NCAA tourney for the very 1st time.

You grew up in Chicago and entered high school as a 6’ guard: how did your 9” growth spurt over the next 3 years change your skill set? My game just adjusted over time. I was a 3-PT shooter as a freshman, then focused more on my ball-handling as a sophomore, and once I was 6’9” I knew that I would have to move down low.

You began your college career at Tyler JC: what made you choose Iona? Just the winning culture. Coach Tim Cluess told me that every year we would have a chance to compete for a championship, which is the best thing I heard from anyone during my recruitment.

Cluess was named 2019 conference COY: what makes him such a good coach, and what is the most important thing that you have learned from him so far? Just to come in and work hard every day. We all know that he is a legend and he expects a lot out of us.

In December you scored 9 PTS in a loss at VCU: how much fun was it to play against a team that forced 23 turnovers and caused you and 2 of your teammates to foul out? It was a struggle at the beginning of the year but we have adjusted.

In early-February you had 17 PTS/12 REB/3 BLK/2 STL in a 1-PT loss to Quinnipiac: where does that rank among the best all-around games of your career? I just tried to give our team whatever we needed by bringing some energy off the bench.

That loss put your team’s record at 7-15: what has changed since then to allow you to win 10 games in a row (including your final 2 by a combined 37 PTS)? We buckled down and came together as a team. We had to lock-in more even though we have so many players who can score.

Roland Griffin was kicked off the team in October after allegedly punching an assistant coach and Isaiah Still only played in 2 conference games due to injury: how has the team been able to stay focused despite losing 2 key players? We just stayed locked-in. Those obstacles hindered us a bit at 1st but eventually it helped turn us into a cohesive unit.

In the MAAC tourney title game on Monday you had 18 PTS/3 STL in a win over Monmouth: what did it mean to you to win a title, and what has the reaction been like since returning to campus? It has been great: everyone on campus is embracing us and letting us know that they appreciate what we have accomplished. It was a great experience to win the title: I have never really cut down the nets after a championship before so the feeling was surreal!

SR PG Rickey McGill was named conference tourney MVP: what makes him such a great player? Just being a team leader/captain. He is vocal and lets us know what he wants out of us but nothing that he says is personal: everything is just for the betterment of the team.

What kind of seed do you think that you deserve, and what kind of seed do you think that you are going to get? I guess we will find out Sunday! This is my 1st year so I am glad to be here, but whatever seed we get we will just roll with the punches.

Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews Colgate JR F Will Rayman

Everyone loves Hamilton, both the Broadway play as well as the location of the best team in the Patriot League! On Wednesday Colgate beat Bucknell 94-80 in the Patriot tourney title game to earn an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament. To give you an idea of how long it has been since the Raiders made the NCAA tourney, it was 1996 when Adonal Foyle had 21 PTS/14 REB/6 BLK in a 9-PT loss to UConn. Earlier this week HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with Colgate JR F Will Rayman about winning 13 games in a row and what it feels like to make the tourney for the very 1st time.

You grew up in New York: what made you choose Colgate? Just the relationships I made with the coaches. They recruited me for 2 years and eventually I knew that this was where I wanted to be.

You play for 2-time defending conference COY Matt Langel: what makes him such a good coach, and what is the most important thing that you have learned from him so far? He is really honest and will tell you the truth rather than what you want to hear. He is a players’ coach and is there for us whenever we need him.

In December of 2017 you scored a career-high 34 PTS in 35 minutes in a 10-PT win at Lafayette: was it just 1 of those situations where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were “in the zone”? I play with a lot of confidence so I feel that every shot I take is going in. Lafayette let me take 11 open threes that night and they are a fast-paced team. I felt like I was on top of the world in my very 1st Patriot League game.

You finished that season by being named conference ROY: how were you able to come in and contribute right from the start? It was hard to get minutes but I am a really competitive kid and kept on working hard until I got a starting spot. We were struggling to score so my role was to be a scorer. Every year is a brand-new team so you just have to find your role. It was not fun losing 22 games that year.

In the 2018 CBI you had 12 PTS/3 STL in a 4-PT loss to San Francisco: what did you learn from that game that will help you this March? Last year we were not playing our game and doing too much 1-on-1 instead. This year we just need to do what we have done during the past 34 games because I have so much confidence in my guys.

In November you scored 13 PTS in a loss at Syracuse: how did your team lose by 21 PTS despite make 12 threes? I think it was due to our turnovers. Syracuse is tough to play against due to their length and it was hard for us to score inside. They scored a lot of fast-break points and really turned up the intensity in the 2nd half, but it will help us when we face a top seed next week.

You began the month of February with a home loss to BU that put your record at 13-10: what has changed since then to allow you to win 13 games in a row (including each of your final 3 by double-digits)? That loss to BU was our 1st home loss all season (which became Colgate’s only home loss all season): they just came at us and we played soft. A few games later against Loyola-Maryland we were down by 17 PTS in the 2nd half and assistant coach Mike Jordan (yet another Penn alum!) said they were calling us soft and dunking in their layup lines. We battled back, won that game by 2 PTS, and gained a lot of confidence which helped us just keep on winning.

In the Patriot tourney title game on Wednesday you scored 18 PTS in a win over Bucknell: what did it mean to you to win a title, and what has the reaction been like since returning to campus? It means everything: we lost to Bucknell on the road last spring by 30 PTS: they were dancing and it was very disrespectful. I went to get a haircut downtown the other day and everyone was waving to me: even my barber knew everything about our team! To win titles in football/soccer/basketball in the same year when you are at a small school is awesome.

In addition to an award-winning coach you have the conference POY (JR PF Rapolas Ivanauskas)/conference tourney MVP (SO PG Jordan Burns)/conference ROY (FR G Tucker Richardson): is the school going to have to build your team a new trophy case to handle all the hardware?! Maybe! It is great to get all of that recognition because Bucknell usually wins all of those awards. JB was not highly recruited and has become 1 of the best PGs in the country, and when he got hurt Tucker came in and led us in AST (which is ridiculous for a freshman!). I am so proud of all of them and it shows that all of their hard work has paid off.

What kind of seed do you think that you deserve, and what kind of seed do you think that you are going to get? It would be awesome to get a 13 seed because that is our lucky # but I just want to go out there with my brothers and win a game. It will be awesome for all of our alumni to see.
