Under the Radar: January 30th

This week we again feature the SoCon and discuss how strong Wofford and UNC Greensboro are and what the chances are of this conference sending more than one team to the NCAA Tournament.  Host Chad Sherwood also busts out his brand new “Are You Stepping To Me Right Now” t-shirt in support of Samford Coach Scott Padgett.  From there we run through all 22 UTR conferences and discuss tight races in the America East, Lipscomb’s dominating the Atlantic Sun, a gridlocked Big Sky, a big week in the Ohio Valley with Belmont getting a big win at Murray State, Prairie View A&M sprinting out to first place in the SWAC, Hofstra’s domination of the Colonial, and much more.  And as we do every week, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten…

NEWS AND NOTES

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day, which is a really good one between Stony Brook and UMBC – CLICK HERE

-Virginia needed overtime to get by NC State picked picked up yet another road win against a ranked team.  NC State has had some really close games this year and are just a few points away from having a much better resume.

-It was mostly chalk for most teams in the top half of our bracket with Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Buffalo all winning rather easily.

-The most notable result of the night was Texas’s home won over Kansas.  Texas had lost five of six coming into last night, including a loss to a Georgia team that just isn’t that good.  Texas’s resume is all over the place.  They have wins against North Carolina, Kansas, Kansas State, and Purdue, but also have losses to Georgia, and Radford.

-I think Lipscomb is for real, and if the Selection Committee doesn’t consider them as an at-large caliber team, then they really should.  They absolutely blew Liberty off the floor last night, and take over sole possession of first place in the ASun.  It was Liberty’s first home loss.  Lipscomb also won at TCU, which is TCU’s only home loss.  That’s a really good resume.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-MARQUETTE AT BUTLER (Big East).  Marquette is one of two Big East teams that is running away from the rest of the conference and running toward a protected seed.  Butler, on the other hand, needs a few big wins just to get within reach of the bubble.

-OLE MISS AT FLORIDA (SEC).  This is a winnable, but hardly an automatic win, for an Ole Miss team that on pace to make the NCAA Tournament.  They’ve lost two straight and this would be a good win to get the momentum turned around.

-VIRGINIA TECH AT MIAMI FL (ACC).  VA Tech is coming off what I think is their most impressive win of the season, and has another winnable road game tonight against a Miami team that very little has gone right for this year.

-WEST VIRGINIA AT IOWA STATE (Big 12).  Iowa State is looking more and more like a protected seed and needs to hold serve at home tonight against what is perhaps the weakest team in the conference this year.

-RICHMOND AT SAINT LOUIS (Atlantic Ten).  If SLU wins out, then they’ve got a chance.  I don’t think it’s even anything more than that.  It’s not a guarantee.  It is just a chance.

-INDIANA AT RUTGERS (Big Ten).  Some say Indiana is in a tailspin.  Others have described it as a death spiral.  They simply cannot afford to lose at Rutgers.  If they do then I’d have to say that their chances of making the NCAAs are less than half.

-PROVIDENCE AT SETON HALL (Big East).  Both teams have some decent wins on their resume, but both still have a lot of work to do, which gives this game a very pivotal feel to it.  Both teams need this one rather badly.

-VILLANOVA AT DEPAUL (Big East).  Nova seems to have righted the ship once conference play started, and is unbeaten in league play.  DePaul has had some moments, and we can safely say that they are much improved, but they still have a lot of weight to lift if they want to even come close to making the NCAA Tournament.

-LOUISVILLE AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  Louisville is on an absolute roll, they seem to be cruising toward a protected seed, and they have a winnable road game tonight against Wake.

-SYRACUSE AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC).  One never knows what’s going to happen with Schizocuse.  They should win this one rather easily, but who knows?

-SAINT JOHN’S AT CREIGHTON (Big East).  This is another bubblicious Big East match-up between two teams that desperately need this win.

-MISSOURI AT AUBURN (SEC).  Auburn doesn’t really have any good wins, but at least they have held serve against the teams they’re supposed to beat.  It’s important that they keep doing that.

-LSU AT TEXAS A&M (SEC).  LSU is still unbeaten in SEC play and their stock is definitely rising.  They haven’t taken on the power of the conference yet, but for now they have a ton of momentum built up and this is another winnable road game for them tonight.

-ILLINOIS AT MINNESOTA (Big Ten).  Minney looks to be a solid tournament team and should win this one rather easily.  But, that is what I said the first time these two played, and Illinois just totally blew them out.

-FRESNO STATE AT WYOMING (Mountain West).  If there is a team in the Mountain West other than Nevada with a shot at an at-large bid, it’s Fresno State.  They basically can’t lose the rest of the way, but they have a very slim shot at it.

-USC AT WASHINGTON (Pac Twelve).  Washington looks to be running away from the Pac 12, and should be safely in the NCAA Tournament as long as they continue to do so.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Stony Brook at UMBC

Stony Brook (17-4, 5-1 AE) at UMBC (13-9, 5-2 AE) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Baltimore where the Retrievers of UMBC will play host to the Stony Brook Seawolves in a pivotal America East matchup. UMBC has improved over the course of the season where they started 9-9 overall (albeit with 3 non-D1 wins) and a very pedestrian 1-2 conference record that included losses at Hartford and UMass-Lowell. They have recently won four straight games (including a game-winning 3 by Ricky Council II to beat Albany at home) and was highlighted by a decisive 74-61 victory on the road against a Vermont team that was unbeaten in America East conference play. Joe Sherburne leads the Retrievers with 14.4 PPG and 2.9 APG.

Stony Brook is coming off of a tough home loss to Vermont where they lost by 21; they were the last of the unbeaten teams in conference play after winning five straight games in the America East. (Fun fact coming out of this game – Vermont had three brothers (Robin, Ernie and Everett Duncan) start a game for the first time in D-1 basketball since Villanova against Colgate back in February 1977!) Out of conference, they had quality wins at South Carolina and at Rhode Island with only a few blips on the radar. Akwasi Yeboah leads the Seawolves with 17.4 PPG and 7.0 RPG.

Lipscomb (16-4, 7-0 A-Sun) at Liberty (18-4, 7-0 A-Sun) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

We have a number of UTR games this week between first and second-place teams in their respective conferences this week; the first 1-2 matchup involves the Lipscomb Bisons and the Liberty Flames. Liberty hosts the first leg; they come into tonight’s game with a NET of 46 that includes wins at UCLA, at Kent State and at home against Georgia State. The Flames have won eight straight games since Christmas Break, including a perfect 7-for-7 in their A-Sun debut since moving from the Big South Conference. Four players average double figures in points for Liberty; they are led by Scottie James (12.4 PPG, 8.5 RPG).

Lipscomb actually has better metrics at this stage; they come into tonight with a NET of 39 and a nonconference SOS of 55 that includes wins at TCU and at SMU back in November. Unlike last year, however, they were swept in the Battle of the Boulevard between crosstown rival Belmont. Overall, Lipscomb has won seven straight league games after falling in their final noncon tuneup at Clemson back on December 30th. Garrison Mathews leads the Bisons with 18.8 points per game.

-Nothing interesting happened yesterday.  Literally nothing.  The Hoops HD Report linked above is far more exciting than any of the games that were played yesterday.

Baylor blew out Oklahoma and is continuing to charge ahead with a full head of steam, and Oklahoma is now in a bit of a free fall.  The game wasn’t close.  It wasn’t just a nice road win for Baylor.  It was a blowout road win.

-TENNESSEE AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  South Carolina is 5-1 in SEC play, but because they got off to such an atrocious start to the season they still have a ton of work to do just to give themselves a chance.  Tennessee is ranked #1 and is looking to hold on to that ranking.

-VIRGINIA AT NC STATE (ACC).  This is another tough road test for a UVA team that’s got a very good chance of landing on the #1 line.  NC State has very little meat on their resume, and could really use a game like this to help give it a boost.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  This is a winnable road game for a Tarheels team that’s been playing really well lately.

-KANSAS AT TEXAS (Big 12).  Kansas has just one true road win and has been struggling in general since the injury to Azubuike.  Texas has done even worse.  They’ve lost five out of six and are in danger of falling out of the field.  A win tonight would really help them get things turned around.

-BALL STATE AT BUFFALO (MAC).  I believe Buffalo will land in the top half of the bracket if they continue to hold serve at home.

-NORTHWESTERN AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  Maryland has lost their last two games, including a really ugly loss in their last game against Illinois, and could use this win to help pull them out of their nose dive.

-LIPSCOMB AT LIBERTY (Atlantic Sun).  If Lipscomb can run the table, I think they’ve got a chance of being in a position to get an at-large bid.  This is a big game because it is probably the toughest remaining game on the schedule.

-WISCONSIN AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten).  Nebraska has lost three straight games and is in real trouble.  A win against Wisky would really help them get their ship righted.  Wisky has won three straight and this would be another nice win on their resume if they’re able to pull it off.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT ALABAMA (SEC).  Alabama has suffered some close losses recently, but is still hovering around the bubble and has a reasonably good chance of making the field.  A win tonight would really help them out.  It would look good on Mississippi State’s resume as well.  It would be their best road win of the season, and arguably their best overall win of the year.

-OHIO STATE AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  Ohio State finally got a win in their last game, which they desperately needed.  If they can pick up a win today then they’ll be solidly back on track, but that’s much easier said than done.  Michigan has just one loss and is on pace to end up as a #1seed.  It’s a rivalry game, but it also looks to be a bit of a mismatch.

-KENTUCKY AT VANDERBILT (SEC).  Kentucky is coming off a nice home win against Kansas.  They seem to be getting better and better as the season goes along and they have a very winnable home game tonight against a Vandy team who hasn’t won an SEC game yet.

-PITTSBURGH AT CLEMSON (ACC).  Both these teams have a lot of work to do, but both are also still on the board for now.  A win tonight would be a start.

-NEVADA AT UNLV (M0untain West).  From all accounts Nevada is clearly the superior team and it shouldn’t be much of a game.  But it’s a rivalry game, and UNLV is just one game back in the conference standings so a tie would actually vault them over Nevada, so there’s that.

The Hoops HD Report: January 28th

We begin by looking at the SEC/Big 12 Challenge and talk about how Kentucky is looking more and more like a Final Four contender, whereas Kansas is slipping since the injury to Azubuike.  Baylor also picked up a big win against Alabama, and Iowa State picked up a big win against Ole Miss.  In the SEC Auburn dropped their third straight game with a loss at Mississippi State, and we start to debate the value of their resume.  In the Big Ten we look at Purdue’s big win against Michigan State, and take another close look at Michigan and discuss their chances for a #1 seed.  We also look at Nebraska and Indiana and discuss how they’re both in a tailspin and how it doesn’t look like they’re going to come out of it anytime soon.  Washington is beginning to establish themselves in the Pac Twelve, and is the only team from that league that’s probable to make the NCAA Tournament.  We also talk about Gonzaga and their chances for a #1 seed, Nevada and whether or not they’re as good as their ranking, and the struggles of the Atlantic Ten.
