Hanging with the Hoyas: Part 5

HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will spend the upcoming months covering several Georgetown basketball home games, with a very special reward coming in March. 4 down, 4 to go:
Part 1: Central Connecticut State (https://hoopshd.com/2018/11/11/hanging-with-the-hoyas-part-1)
Part 2: Richmond (https://hoopshd.com/2018/11/30/hanging-with-the-hoyas-part-2)
Part 3: Liberty (https://hoopshd.com/2018/12/04/hanging-with-the-hoyas-part-3)
Part 4: SMU (https://hoopshd.com/2018/12/15/hanging-with-the-hoyas-part-4)
Part 5 was Tuesday night when Appalachian State visited DC for the schools’ 2nd meeting all-time.

The pregame media room meal was catered by Maggiano’s: 2 kinds of pasta, meatballs/sausages, 3 kinds of sauce, plus chocolate bon bons/apple pastries for dessert!

It was evident early on that the Mountaineers are a veteran team (with 2 seniors/2 juniors in the starting lineup): when SO SG Trent Forrest went down hard it took only a second for all 4 of his on-court teammates to rush over and life him up (just as they hustle to chat together in a huddle before every single trip to the FT line).  In contrast, Georgetown’s 7-3 record this year has been cobbled together with a lot of freshmen but is most directly a result of SR C Jessie Govan’s stellar play (19.5 PPG/8 RPG). However, Appalachian State coach Jim Fox came up with the blueprint to beat him: double-team him every time he touches the ball and hope that he picks up some early fouls. The 1st half result: 0 PTS/0 REB/2 fouls, and a look toward the heavens by the big man for some divine intervention:

His young Hoya teammates picked up the slack in his apparent absence: FR PG James Akinjo made a pair of threes, FR PF Josh LeBlanc had a pair of rebound/put-backs, and FR SF Grayson Carter made the very 1st FG of his college career on a nice-looking 3 from the top of the key.

Appalachian State star scorer Ronshad Shabazz has a real chance to graduate in the spring with 2000+ career PTS and he showed off the entire arsenal in the 1st half: banking in a jump shot, making another jumper from the baseline, a layup, a pair of threes, and a step-back jumper at the buzzer to put his team only 2 PTS shy of Georgetown at halftime (44-42). 6’8” PF Bennett Holley was much harder to figure out: entering the game with only 3.4 PPG, he was unstoppable in the 1st half while making 4 threes…then somehow airballed back-to-back 3-PT attempts in the 2nd half!

The player I was most excited to see was SO PG Michael Bibby, son of legendary Arizona Wildcat Mike Bibby. After playing for his father at the same high school Mike attended himself in Phoenix, Michael (who turns 21 on Christmas Eve) began his college career at South Florida, sat out all of last year after transferring to scenic Boone, NC, and had a DNP in each of his 1st 10 games this year before making his Appalachian State debut in DC. Fun fact: according to Teitel family legend, my brother allegedly beat Michael’s dad in a pickup basketball game during the mid-1990s (when they were both in high school in Phoenix). Funner fact: this is a photo of Michael’s 1st-ever 3-PT shot in a Mountaineer uniform (yes it was contested and yes he made it!):

During halftime I saw a display of all the different credentials used by media covering the Wizards at home: hopefully things will work out better for the next player whose image they use, as Washington traded Kelly Oubre Jr. to my Phoenix Suns (the worst team in the Western Conference) on Saturday:

7’ transfer Omer Yurtseven had a boot on his foot earlier this month but a look at his shoes during layup lines illustrates that he is on the mend:

Another solid sighting was Peter Biche, Chief Financial Officer of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the company that oversees almost every pro sports team in DC (Wizards/Capitals/Mystics/Valor/Go-Go), as well as the arena that most of them play in and the Monumental Sports Network. He went to college at Georgetown and is often seen in the front row at his alma mater’s games (seen here in the middle of the good seats wearing a blazer/slacks), but what should really impress you is his MBA from a little basketball power called Penn!

Shabazz did not do much in the 2nd half as the Georgetown defense kept a closer eye on him, but JR PF Hunter Seacat picked up much of the scoring load with an array of low-post moves: a lefty layup, a righty hook, a leaner in the lane, and even a lefty bank shot. Govan finally got it going in the 2nd half after making 2 shots from behind the arc but for the 1st time this season he was not the best big man on the floor. That honor belonged to Mountaineers’ JR PF Isaac Johnson: 10 PTS (mostly in the post), a career-high 17 REB, and even 3 AST to demonstrate his all-around game.

The keys for Georgetown in the 2nd half were 2 of their subs off the bench: 1 old and 1 young. SR SG Greg Malinowski did not play a single second in the 1st half but received a chance to shine after halftime and made the most of his moment by making a couple of 3-PT shots and knocking down all 5 of his FT attempts to finish with 11 PTS in less than 15 minutes of action. Most of the well-deserved attention this month has been directed toward the Hoyas’ freshman backcourt of #3 Akinjo/#2 Mac McClung (who combined for 31 PTS in 55 minutes):

However, the youngster who might end up as the biggest X-factor is LeBlanc. I still have no idea if he can make a jump shot or play more than 30 minutes/game, and he seems to make at least 1 freshman mistake every single game (be it goaltending, missing a dunk, or throwing a an alley-oop pass that does not reach its desired target), but he now has 2 double-doubles to his credit in 11 games OFF THE BENCH and is tied with Govan for the team lead with 85 REB this year.  The Mountaineers hung around right until the final 2 minutes (cutting the lead to 74-71 after a Shabazz layup) but Georgetown made enough FTs down the stretch to win it 83-73.

I am not in the business of telling other people how to do their job, especially a Hall of Famer like Patrick Ewing…but I think that he should strongly consider starting his 3 fabulous freshmen next to Govan/Trey Mourning, perhaps during 1 or both of their upcoming cupcake home games against Little Rock/Howard before Big East play starts with a trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse the day after New Year’s:

At the postgame press conference I pressed Coach Ewing to discuss the roller-coaster-of-a-week that Jamorko Pickett had: a DNP-coach’s decision on Saturday vs. SMU, followed by 8 PTS/3 REB/2 AST/2 BLK against the Mountaineers. Ewing said that the DNP was part of the past and that Pickett “did a great job on both offense and defense”. He followed that up by noting that the only reason Pickett went scoreless in the 2nd half was due to a lack of minutes because Ewing “did not want to break up the lineup” while Malinowksi was playing so well:

My 2-part question for Mr. Playing-So-Well concerned the almost unheard of opprtunity to face his former roommate now that they are both in new conferences (he lived with Seacat when they were teammates at William & Mary) and how it felt to be the best FT shooter in the nation (17-17 so far!):

Malinowksi confirmed that while they keep in touch by texting it was the 1st time he had actually seen his old roomie since they played together and that it was a “cool moment”. As far as perfection he preached the art of practice in that he “tries to make 50-100 FTs every day” and that his success at the line translates to success while shooting from anywhere on the court:

The Big East Conference announced Tuesday that it will represent the United States at the 2019 Pan American Games, the 1st time ever that a specific conference will be represent its country in men’s basketball at the Pan Am Games. I checked with USA Basketball as to whether Govan could participate and they emailed me back to say, “There is no eligibility requirement that would prevent an individual from the class of 2019 from being selected and/or competing.” Therefore, I asked Govan whether he had ever dreamed of representing his country or what it would mean to do so and he responded, “It would be really cool and definitely an honor to wear ‘USA’ on my chest if I am fortunate enough to be chosen”:

That’s all for now, check back in the weeks ahead for Part 6.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Hofstra at Stony Brook

For today’s News, Notes and Highlighted Games – CLICK HERE

Hofstra (8-3, 8-3 D1) at Stony Brook (10-2, 9-2 D1) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

We teased a Long Island matchup between LIU-Brooklyn and Stony Brook as an UTR Game of the Day last week, but we now have the main event between the Hofstra Pride and the Stony Brook Seawolves for tonight. Hofstra comes into tonight’s game with a 5-game winning streak that includes three wins against MAAC foes (including pre-season favorite Rider). Tareq Coburn had a double-double (22 points, 10 rebounds) in Hofstra’s 80-50 win against Manhattan in their last outing.

Stony Brook comes into tonight’s Battle for Long Island with a modest two-game winning streak following a surprising loss at Brown. They are coming off back-to-back wins at home against LIU-Brooklyn and Delaware in a pair of closely contested games. Akwasi Yeboah had 24 points against the Blackbirds and 25 points against the Blue Hens, respectively.

One final bit of trivia (with credit to Chad Sherwood) – the top two teams in the America East went a combined 5-0 against the Atlantic 10 this season. Stony Brook won at GW and at Rhode Island; Vermont won at GW, George Mason and at home against St. Bonaventure.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Wednesday, Dec 19th

-Buffalo picked up a win at Syracuse that is perhaps their most impressive of the year.  West Virginia had tapered off some, but Syracuse still looks like a solid NCAA team that is tough to beat at home.  Not only that, but Buffalo trailed for a good portion of the game, but kept it close and made the plays they needed to late in the game to cement the win.  As for Syracuse, it’s their second straight home loss and they’re going to need to bounce back.

-The Citadel won again.  They have no won eight in a row.  You are reading that correctly.

-SAMFORD AT TENNESSEE.  This is a obviously a buy game, and Samford is so overmatched that the final score may end up looking like a buy game, but at 10-2 Samford has been one of the bigger surprises in college hoops this year.  They haven’t been such a surprise that it’s likely they’ll be able to knock off a #1 seed caliber team, but they are good enough to at least make the game worth paying attention to.

-VIRGINIA AT SOUTH CAROLINA.  UVA is unbeaten and trying to pick up their second true road win of the season.  South Carolina has a very young team and they’re still struggling to get it figured out.

-AUBURN AT NC STATE.  This one should be REALLY fun.  Auburn is high in the rankings and everyone knows how good they are.  NC State is really strong as well, but hasn’t won a game like this to catapult themselves into the national rankings and national consciousness.  They will get that chance tonight.  This would be a VERY impressive road win for Auburn if they’re able to pick it up.  It would arguably be their most impressive win to date.

-HOFSTRA AT STONY BROOK.  Stony Brook is off to a very good 10-2 start with some really notable road wins on their resume.  They should get a test from a Hofstra team that’s also pretty good at 8-3.  Stony Brook would pretty much have to run the table or come close to it to land near the bubble, but they’ve looked a lot better than most of their remaining schedule, so it’s not impossible.

-PENN STATE AT DUQUESNE.  This is a game that Penn State REALLY needs to win.  They’ve been disappointing so far given what their expectations for the year were, and while Duquesne isn’t an solid NCAA Tournament team by any means, they are 8-2 and unbeaten at home, so it’s not the kind of game that Penn State can just show up to and automatically think they’re going to win.

-OLD DOMINION AT RICHMOND.  ODU has wins over VCU and Syracuse on their resume, and they have a chance to improve to 9-3 today while picking up another true road win against their old Colonial rivals.

-WESTERN KENTUCKY AT BELMONT.  WKU has been all over the place this year.  Soem games they’ve looked like a top 25 team, and in others they’ve struggled to beat teams that aren’t even 100 miles within the NIT.  Belmont is good enough to perhaps land inside the bubble come Selection Sunday, and is coming off a really nice win at UCLA.  They should be able to get this one at home, but then again, will the really good WKU team show up and make it tough for them?

-WOFFORD AT MISSISSIPPI STATE.  This one should be a fun one even though it’s a buy game.  Mississippi State is looking to pick up their 10th win of the year, and Wofford is looking to add a huge statement win to their resume.  Chances are the Terriers are overmatched, but Mississippi State better not overlook them.

-SOUTHERN MISS AT KANSAS STATE.  K State hasn’t done anything away from home yet, so it is important that they continue to hold serve at home.  Southern Miss’s program appears to be going in the right direction, but they still have a long ways to go.

-MONTANA AT ARIZONA.  Arizona is in a bit of a tailspin, and they need to pull themselves out of it because Montana is a team that’s good enough to beat just about anyone that overlooks them.

-UCLA AT CINCINNATI.  UCLA has yet to play a true road game, and they’ve yet to win any sort of a game away from home.  They’re also coming off a home loss to Belmont, and really need a big win in a game like this to give some stability to a resume that definitely needs it.  Cincinnati is also looking to bounce back from a road loss at Mississippi State.

-GEORGIA TECH AT ARKANSAS.  GA Tech just lost at home to Gardner Webb.  Maybe this should be down with the buy games.  Arkansas is looking to improve to 8-2 on the season.

-CALIFORNIA AT FRESNO STATE.  Fresno State is off to a quiet 7-2 start and has a very winnable game tonight against a Cal team that is, by all accounts, awful.

-BOISE STATE AT LMU.  LMU continues to win and shouldn’t have too much trouble getting to 11-1 on the year.

-Florida College (nondiv1) @ Florida Atlantic
-Sacred Heart @ Seton Hall
-Saint Francis Brooklyn @ Saint John’s
-North Florida @ Florida State
-NC A&T @ Virginia Tech – UNCLE BUZZ!!!!  Trying to get to 10-1
-Central Arkansas @ Indiana
-NC Central @ Saint Louis
-Incarnate Word @ DePaul
-Cal State Northridge @ New Mexico State
-Northern Arizona @ Saint Mary’s

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day between The Citadel and Campbell – CLICK HERE

-Despite injuries, Vandy continues to play well.  Last night they picked up a rather surprising (at least to me) and impressive win as they decisively knocked off an Arizona State team that had been read hot on the year.  At 7-2 with a couple of decent wins, we have to start looking at Vandy as a possible NCAA Tournament team.

-Davidson really needed to bounce back and beat Wake Forest after their loss to Temple.  Or, perhaps the better way of putting it is that they needed not to lose to Wake Forest, who appears to be an NIT team at best.  Unfortunately, they lost to Wake Forest.

-XAVIER AT MISSOURI.  Both these teams are pretty far outside looking in right now, and need to start stringing together wins in games other than buy games in order to get caught back up.

-SOUTH FLORIDA AT FIU.  Both teams have impressive records and semi-impressive resumes, but both still have a lot of work to do with a small margin for error if they want to land inside the bubble.  This is also the first true road game for South Florida.

-RADFORD AT UNC GREENSBORO.  This should be a fun match-up between two really strong UTR teams.  UNCG can improve to 11-2 with a win, and Radford can add another quality road win to their resume.

-BRADLEY AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN.  Another match-up between two good UTR teams.  Bradley should be able to make quite a bit of noise in the MVC this year when you look at how that league has struggled, and Georgia Southern has a few big wins already and could be a force in the SBC.

-BUFFALO AT SYRACUSE.  Syracuse is coming off a loss to Old Dominion, and while we still have a long stretch of the season ahead of us which will give Syracuse ample chances at good wins in conference play, there is a sense of urgency to this game for the Orange.  Buffalo is 10-0 with a top 15 ranking, and they are looking at adding another quality road win to their resume as well. It should be a really fun game.

-LIBERTY VS ALABAMA (Rocket City Classic).  At 9-2 on the year, Liberty is off to a really good start and has a great opportunity at a huge win today.  Alabama is a modest 6-3 and will certainly have the chances they need to play their way inside the bubble if they’re good enough.  Holding serve today will be tougher than they expect, though.

-NORTH TEXAS AT NEW MEXICO.  North Texas has a bloated 10-1 record on the year so far, but they haven’t really been tested or gotten the kinds of wins that would really impress the committee, so their margin for error is still rather small.  They have a chance to pick up a semi-decent road win against a New Mexico team that has really struggled this season.

-CREIGHTON AT OKLAHOMA.  Oklahoma continues to win against better and better competition, and they continue to improve.  Creighton is a modest 7-3 and winning a game like this on the road could change the entire complexion of their current resume.  This will be a quality win for whoever ends up pulling it out.

-Princeton @ Duke
-Florida A&M @ Oregon
-Appalachian State @ Georgetown
-Youngstown @ Ohio State
-Albany @ Providence
-Binghamton @ Notre Dame
-Charleston @ Siena – a win for CofC gets them to 10-2 on the year
-Drexel @ UConn
-Charleston Southern @ Clemson
-South Dakota @ Kansas
-Evansville @ Murray State – a win for Murray gets them to 8-1 on the year
-Presby @ Butler
-SFA @ Baylor
-UT Arlington @ Gonzaga
-North Dakota @ Marquette
-Western Carolina @ Iowa
-South Dakota State @ Eastern Washington

Under The Radar Game of the Day: The Citadel at Campbell

For the latest episode of the Hoops HD Report Podcast – CLICK HERE

For the Puppet’s latest checkpoint bracket projection – CLICK HERE

Citadel (8-2, 5-2 D1) at Campbell (5-4, 3-4 D1) – 7:00 PM (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day matches up a pair of prolific offensive teams in the Bulldogs of Citadel and the Campbell Fighting Camels. Citadel comes into the game with a 6-game winning streak that includes a win against Southeast Missouri State 86-74 in their last contest. They even won at South Florida 84-81 over Thanksgiving break. As a team, Citadel currently averages 101 points per game – even with 3 non-D1 games on their docket, that is an impressive feat that includes 5 players (led by Lew Stallworth’s 17.1 PPG and 6.1 RPG) currently averaging double figures for the Bulldogs.

Any discussion of Campbell is certain to include one of the nation’s leading scorers in Chris Clemons, who is currently averaging an eye-popping 31 points a game (along with 6.3 RPG and 3.1 APG) for the Camels. Clemons surpassed 2,500 career points in Campbell’s 100-53 win in their last game against Central Penn. Assuming Campbell stays healthy and scores at least 25 points a game in Campbell’s remaining games, there is a chance he could eclipse the 3,000-point mark in his Campbell career!

The Hoops HD Report: December 17th

Chad and the panel are back to recap another busy weekend in college basketball.  They begin by looking at the Big 12 and Kansas’s big win over Villanova, along with Texas Tech and Oklahoma who are off to great starts.  In the ACC we look at North Carolina’s big win over Gonzaga, and how NC State deserves more credit than they’re getting.  In the Big Ten, we discuss Purdue and how much they’ve struggled, how Michigan continues to dominate, and question how good Ohio State is after they struggled against Bucknell.  In the SEC we look at how good Tennessee and Mississippi State are, and debate the overall strength of LSU.  The Pac Twelve and Atlantic Ten continue to struggle, and we discuss how many of those teams can land inside the bubble.  All that, and much more…

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…
