Under The Radar Game of the Day: Florida Atlantic at Arkansas State

Florida Atlantic (7-2, 5-2 D1) at Arkansas State (3-6, 2-6 D1) – 8:00 PM EST (Live Stream)

Today, we only have one game between a pair of UTR conference teams – the Florida Atlantic Owls hit the road to Jonesboro, Arkansas to visit the Arkansas State Red Wolves. FAU is coming off of a home win against Mercer 68-64 last week – they are now done with their exam week (as will about 90 percent of colleges across the country as of tonight). Jailyn Ingram led the Owls with 22 points against Mercer.

Arkansas State lost at Minnesota 72-56 in their last game after falling behind 21-2 to start the game. The Red Wolves’ only two wins against D1 competition have come against Gardner-Webb on a neutral court (in Asheville) and at home against Evansville. Ty Cockfield leads Arkansas State with 21.3 points a game and 3.0 assists per game.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: North Florida at Florida International (and Puppet Notes)

North Florida (4-6, 3-6 D1) at Florida International (7-2, 4-2 D1) – 7:00 PM EST (CUSA.TV)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Miami, Florida for a matchup of Sunshine State rivals – the Ospreys of North Florida will visit the Panthers of Florida International. FIU has bloated their overall record with 3 non-D1 wins, but 3 of their 4 wins in D1 were away from home (2 in the Bach Classic in New York against Columbia and Youngstown State) that includes a road win at Florida Gulf Coast. Brian Beard Jr. leads the Panthers with 21.9 points a game and 7 assists per game.

North Florida comes into the game with wins in 2 of their last 3 games – the wins were at home against Florida A&M and on the road at Charleston Southern. They were also competitive in a road loss at Minnesota where they were down 1 point at the 5-minute mark, but the Gophers ended up winning 80-71. Noah Horchler averages a double-double for the Ospreys with 15.2 points a game and 10.3 rebounds a game.

 

PUPPET NOTES

-Not much was going right for Houston at the end of the first half against LSU, and they were noticeably frustrated going into the half,  but they made some good adjustments and came from behind to win the game.  That says a lot about their toughness.  The Cougars remain unbeaten and are building quite a resume.

-Louisville got a battle from Lipscomb, but managed to hold on.  For Lipscomb, this would have been the kind of win that could have put them even further inside the bubble.  As it stands now their resume is still good with two pretty good road wins, and if they blow through the ASun they may be okay even if they slip up in the conference tournament, but WOW winning at Louisville would have really helped.

-Murray State went into Southern Illinois and totally blew their doors off.  A very impressive showing for the Racers, who currently have just one loss.

Tonight, UMES is at Duquesne, Savannah State is at Wiscnosin, Samford is at home against Morehead State, Tulsa is hosting New Orleans, and Eastern Washington is visiting San Francisco.  Those are the only games involving teams that are on the radar, and none are really that good.  If you need a night off, you can take tonight off.

Under the Radar: December 12th

Chad and David start off by looking at the Ohio Valley Conference and how strong both Murray State and Belmont have looked, particularly Murray State’s huge blowout win at Southern Illinois.  We then look at New Mexico State in the WAC, and what a strong showing they had in a near upset road game against Kansas.  Seattle and Grand Canyon are also off to pretty impressive starts.  We run through all 22 UTR conferences and discuss Lipscomb’s near win against Louisville, Radford’s and Stony Brook’s road wins, how several teams in both the Horizon League and Missouri Valley have underachieved, and much more.  And as always, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: LIU-Brooklyn at Stony Brook

LIU-Brooklyn (5-4, 4-4 D1) at Stony Brook (8-2, 7-2 D1) – 7:00 PM (ESPN3)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day features a pair of Long Island teams – the LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds and the resurging Stony Brook Seawolves. The Blackbirds come in to tonight’s game having won 2 of their last 3 games – they won at Saint Peter’s 74-58 following a trip to Northern Ireland that featured a win against Albany and a loss against Marist. Raiquan Clark leads the Blackbirds with 20.6 points a game and 5.8 rebounds a game; Derek Kellogg’s team will again be one of the contenders for the Northeast Conference title this season.

Stony Brook has gotten off to a very good start this season, but did lose in a bit of a surprise at Brown 71-69 over the weekend. They still have wins at George Washington, South Carolina and Rhode Island on their resume so far. Akwasi Yeboah leads the Seawolves with 19.6 points a game and 7.8 rebounds per game; Elijah Olaniyi also averages 11.8 PPG and 5.8 RPG for Stony Brook as well.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Wednesday, Dec 12th

-Big 5!!!  Penn snapped a 15 year losing streak to Nova, and I think a 25 Big 5 game winning streak for Nova, with their 78-75 win yesterday.  Penn sprinted out to an early 14-2 lead, and while Nova came back they never really got control of the game.  To Penn’s credit, every time the momentum seemed to be going toward Nova, they would come up with a big play.  For the Quakers, it’s a huge feel good win, but it’s also an important win on paper.  They’re suddenly putting together quite a nice resume and may be hovering around the bubble, or even inside of it, if they can hold serve and blow through the Ivy League.

-Colorado had to overcome an early 17 point deficit at New Mexico, but came back and picked up the win.  The Buffs are now 8-1 on the year, and while we haven’t talked all that much about them, they are a Pac Twelve team that doesn’t appear to suck.

-LIPSCOMB AT LOUISVILLE.  This is a buy game, but it’s one of the more interesting buy games that you’ll see.  Lipscomb has already picked up road wins at TCU and SMU, and while Louisville is the better team and they are at home, Lipscomb should still be able to play really well.

-UMASS AT TEMPLE.  This is an old Atlantic Ten rivalry from when the A10 had its classic ten team lineup.  Temple has done fairly well so far this season and just needs to hold serve in games like this when they’re playing sub-tournament caliber teams at home.

-MURRAY STATE AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS.  This is a really good UTR game between two possible (and perhaps even probable) NCAA Tournament caliber teams.  Murray State’s only loss on the year was at Alabama, and SIU has won 7 of their last 8 since dropping their first two to Kentucky and Buffalo.  Both teams need quality wins on their resume in order to jump out to the committee, so this game is rather important.

-LSU AT HOUSTON.  This is a big road test for an LSU team that is probably better than what their current resume indicates.  Houston is unbeaten, but they’re also facing what is probably their biggest test of the year even though they are at home.

-SAN DIEGO AT OREGON.  San Diego is off to a really good 8-2 start, whereas Oregon has somewhat underachieved this year.  The Ducks are at home and are undoubtedly favored to win this game, but they’re not so much better than San Diego that they can just overlook them.  If San Diego picks up this road win then we have to start talking about them as a possible at-large worthy team.

-Chattanooga @ Georgia State – Georgia State has proclaimed themselves first place in the SEC, and can get to 7-3 overall tonight

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Savannah State at South Dakota State

Savannah State (3-7, 2-7 D1) at South Dakota State (8-3, 7-3 D1) – 8:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Brookings, South Dakota where the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State play host to the Team of the People – the Savannah State Tigers. The Tigers resume play after a 10-day layoff for exams – their last outing was a 97-60 loss at Gardner-Webb. Savannah’s last victory came against Alcorn State back in November in a neutral-court game played on Liberty’s campus. The Tigers continue to remain among the leaders nationally in game tempo; they score over 80 points a game (led by Jaquan Dotson’s 11.9 points a game) but give up a whopping 96 points a game in return.

The Jackrabbits come into tonight’s game following a 101-92 win at home against Southern University last Saturday. Their most noteworthy wins so far (which may not be saying much by recent SDSU standards) are against Grand Canyon and Colorado State. Losses at Florida Gulf Coast and on a neutral court against Tulane will sting, however. While Mike Daum is one of the nation’s best players with 25.2 points a game and 10.3 rebounds a game, don’t sleep on David Jenkins either – he averages 22 points a game for the Jackrabbits as well.
