Under the Radar: November 29th

Chad, David, and John begin by talking about Texas Southern’s big win a Oregon, and have a debate on how big of an upset it actually was in terms of its improbability and historical significance.  After that, they run through all 22 UTR conferences and discuss Stony Brook’s great start with their road wins, how Furman is very close to getting into the rankings, C-USA’s sudden struggles, Belmont and Lipscomb’s strong play, and much more.  And as always, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

NEWS AND NOTES

-Louisville led Michigan State for most of the game, but Sparty mounted a second half comeback and it looked like Louisville might be letting another one slip away.  After a missed Michigan State freethrow at the end of regulation, the game went into overtime and Louisville pulled it out.  Beating a ranked team at home may be the most feelgood moment that entire department (not just the basketball team) has experienced in years.  Two years ago they self imposed a postseason ban, last year they missed the tournament, their football team has crashed into a mountain, and they are still under the cloud of the FBI investigations that may be looming.  But, they had a good moment last night with a new coach and a lot of new players that had nothing to do with their previous troubles, so good for them!

-In a much anticipated rematch from last year’s Sweet Sixteen, Nevada won impressively at Loyola Chicago in front of a crowd that was absolutely jacked for the game.  Loyola has been somewhat disappointing this season, but Nevada has looked impressive every time they have taken the floor.

-Penn State got a big win against a Virginia Tech team in a game that was close all throughout.  This Penn State team has a lot of potential, and they took a huge step forward last night.

-For over a year, we’ve been beating up on Pitt.  They lost at Iowa last night, but I was far more impressed with them than anything else.  Iowa is a very good team that earned their ranking after winning some big wins, and who was at home, and who had a lot of momentum built up.  Pitt led for most of the game and had a chance to win it.  This likely won’t end up being a damaging loss, and if they play like that the rest of the year Pitt will win a lot of games, and come up with the good wins they need to make the NCAA Tournament.  They are no longer the sludge-fire that they were a year ago.

-In UTR news, Stony Brook is now 6-1 with four true road wins.  They are a team to keep an eye on.  We will discuss them, Texas Southern’s win against Oregon which was the most improbable win that I can ever recall, and a lot more when we record our Under the Radar podcast tonight.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-GEORGIA STATE AT TULANE.  Field Trip!!!!  It’s an afternoon game early in the day that a lot of school children will be at.  They’ll should be treated to a fairly decent line up between a Tulane team that is improving, and a Georgia State team that is already good.

-VCU AT OLD DOMINION.  This is an old Colonial rivalry that still burns pretty hot.  VCU is off to a good 5-1 start, but this is their first true road game of the season

-BRADLEY AT IUPUI.  Bradly is off to a good 6-1 start, but doesn’t have a true road win yet.  They should get this one, but IUPUI is a surprising 4-2 with a win at Boston College, and a really good showing at Xavier in a loss, so while the Braves should win it won’t be an easy win.

-SYRACUSE AT OHIO STATE (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  Syracuse has not produced away from home, and has been a little disappointing this year.  Ohio State, on the other hand, is off to a fantastic start with two really good wins already and the chance to add another notable win to their resume.

-RUTGERS AT MIAMI (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  Both teams have just one loss and are trying to build up some momentum as we approach the end of November.

-VIRGINIA AT MARYLAND (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  This is an old ACC rivalry that, in my opinion, should still be an ACC rivalry.  Virginia is off to a great start as we all expected.  Maryland is also off to a great start, and not all of us were expecting that.  Both teams are in the rankings, neither team has a loss, and Maryland should be jacked to be playing this game at home, so it should be fun.

-SAN DIEGO AT OLE MISS.  San Diego is off to a good 5-1 start, and this appears to be a winnable road game for them.

-BYU AT ILLINOIS STATE.  This is an important road game for a BYU team that has looked pretty good at times, but really needs some meat on their resume.  Illinois State is a solid team that plays well at home, and the committee should throw some credit BYU’s way if they’re able to pull this off.

-MONTANA AT CREIGHTON.  This is one of the games that I’m most looking forward to tonight.  Montana has just one loss and will really shoot up the relevance ladder if they’re able to pull off a road win like this.  Creighton has also played well this year and picked up a real nice win against Clemson last week.

-HAWAII AT UCLA.  UCLA needs to take care of business at home against a decent but not great Hawaii team.

-NEW MEXICO STATE AT UTEP.  Another chapter in this rivalry.  New Mexico State can improve to a very respectable 5-1 and pick up their second true road win.  Not bad for a team that was supposedly having a rebuilding year.

-NORTHERN COLORADO AT DENVER (Front Range).  WE LOVE THE FRONT RANGE!!!  In all seriousness, Northern Colorado is off to a really good start and can improve to 4-1 on the season tonight.

-PURDUE AT FLORIDA STATE (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  Both teams are ranked in the top 20, and both have some pretty good wins on their resumes.  This is a fun, early season match up that allows both teams that chance at a resume building win.

-GEORGIA TECH AT NORTHWESTERN (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  I’m still not all that big on either team’s longevity this year, but at this moment both have just one loss, and both have a chance to keep that momentum going.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT MICHIGAN (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  This Challenge has given us some good games this year, but this is the most intriguing.  It’s a Michigan team that’s played its way into the top ten after picking up some huge wins, and a North Carolina team that’s looking to bounce back from it’s seemingly annual early season loss.

-UC IRVINE AT SAINT MARY’S.  I really like this UCI team, and they have a chance to get a decent win that the committee will notice if they’re able to pull this off tonight.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Bradley at IUPUI

Bradley (6-1, 5-1 D1) at IUPUI (4-2) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Most of the games of significance involving Missouri Valley teams today are part of the Missouri Valley/Mountain West challenge, but the best game in the Valley today will actually involve a Horizon League team instead. The Bradley Braves go on the road for their second true road game against the IUPUI Jaguars. Their only loss so far this season was against another Horizon program (Illinois-Chicago), but the Braves won a pair of games against SMU and Penn State down in Cancun last week. Elijah Childs averaged just under 20 points a game in the 2 Cancun games; he was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for his efforts.

IUPUI’s highlight of the year by far has to be their win at Boston College 76-69 two weeks ago; they also won a pair of games in the “undercard” portion of the Fort Myers Classic (in the always-tropical locale of Niagara, New York) against St. Francis-Brooklyn and Grambling. Camron Justice has led IUPUI thus far this season with 18.8 points a game. This will be the first game of a 5-game homestand for IUPUI that also includes a pair of games in December against non-D1 IU branch campuses.

TEXAS SOUTHERN BEATS OREGON

-I’ll begin with something that I didn’t think I’d be talking about 12 hours ago, and it is so surprising that I’ve given it it’s own sub-headline.  This is the second road buy game that Texas Southern has won against a P5 team.  They’ve won more road games against P5 teams than most P5 teams.  And those are the only two games that they have won.  Granted none of the other losses were all that bad.  All were on the road, and Gonzaga, Iowa State, and San Diego State are hardly easy road games to win, but to win at Baylor and at Oregon really is amazing for any team.  Baylor is 32-8 at home over the last two years, and that’s against Big Twelve competition, which is pretty good.  But to win at Oregon is a RIDONCULOUS win!!  Oregon has won 52 of their last 55 home games, and if you go back even further they are 114-13 at home going back to the 2011-2012 season.  They lose at home almost as infrequently as Kansas does, and for them to lose a home buy game to Texas Southern is nothing short of astounding.  It’s not as big as a #16 beating a #1 seed in the sense that the game is not as important, but in terms of how unexpected a win like this was, it’s more surprising than a #16 beating a one.  Now, perhaps Oregon is not one of the 20 best teams in the country, so by the end of the year it may not seem so outrageous, but for now it is utterly stupefying.

-And you know, I don’t even remember what else happened yesterday.  Anything??  Wofford won big at South Carolina and Nebraska picked up a huge road win at Clemson, and normally those things would get some chatter, but….TEXAS SOUTHERN WON AT OREGON!!!  HOLY CRAP!!!

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-VIRGINIA TECH AT PENN STATE (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  We had high expectations for Penn State this year, but so far they haven’t really delivered.  This is their chance to take on a heavyweight at home.  VA Tech, on the other hand, has met and exceeded expectations so far and has the chance to add another nice (probably) road win to their resume.

-CHARLOTTE AT DAVIDSON.  This rivalry doesn’t resonate with the national consciousness, but it is a rivalry.  This year it happens to be a very lopsided rivalry.  Davidson is trying to improve to 4-1 whereas Charlotte has a lot of work to do.

-ILLINOIS AT NOTRE DAME (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  Both teams need to win, and truth be told both teams need to do a lot more than that.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT LOUISVILLE (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  Louisville is coming off two tough back to back losses in the Preseason NIT, one of which was particularly frustrating where they had a lead for most of the game, but lost in overtime.  They’re at home against a really good Michigan State team, and the fans should really be behind them, so it could be a really good atmosphere.

-NEVADA AT LOYOLA CHICAGO (MWC/MVC Challenge).  This is a rematch from last year’s Sweet Sixteen, and is probably the biggest showcase game Loyola has hosted….maybe ever.  The Ramblers have struggled at times, whereas Nevada has looked dominant all year long and well deserving of their top ten ranking.

-NORTH TEXAS AT OKLAHOMA.  Unless you follow us closely, you probably don’t realize that North Texas is undefeated, and they haven’t just been playing home buy games either.  This is probably their toughest test of the year so far, but they’ve won all their games so far.  Oklahoma hasn’t always looked great, but they’ve also looked to be improving.  Their only loss was to Wisconsin, and they’re coming a win against a Dayton team that appears to be decent.  This match-up won’t get all that many people all that excited, but it is one of the more intriguing games of the night.

-SAVANNAH STATE AT VANDERBILT.  The Team of the People!!!  Playing a road buy game!!  Generating revenue!!  They’ve done well since transitioning up, considering how rough it was during the transitional period!!  They should stay on this trajectory!!  SAVE THE TIGERS!!!

-TEMPLE AT MISSOURI.  Mizzou has been hugely disappointing this year.  They need some sort of decent win, any sort of decent win, to get their motor started and get things turned around.

-NC STATE AT WISCONSIN (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  NC State is unbeaten, but is also untested for the most part.  Wisky has a nice win at Xavier and has looked pretty strong this year.  They appear to have rebounded after their hiatus from the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

-PITTSBURGH AT IOWA (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  Both of these teams have exceeded expectations so far, and both are trying to pick up another big early season win.

-SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AT COLORADO STATE.  It’s not easy to win at Colorado State, but if Southern Illinois is going to be as good as we think they can be (which they absolutely have not shown us yet), then they need to be able to win games like this.

-INDIANA AT DUKE (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  Indiana is much better than they were a year ago, but this one could get rough.  Duke is a #1 seed caliber team.  And they’re at home.  And they’re coming off a loss.

BUY GAMES (and other games worth mentioning, but not highlighting)

-UMES @ Saint John’s
-Stony Brook @ Norfolk State – Stony Brook can improve to 4-1 and pick up their 3rd road win
-Pine Bluff @ Cincinnati
-Western Carolina @ Wake Forest
-Kennesaw State @ Georgia
-North Florida @ Florida
-UMass Lowell @ UConn
-Cedarville (nondiv1) @ Wright State
-Northern Kentucky @ Morehead State – NKU can improve to 6-0
-Charleston Southern @ Marquette
-South Dakota @ Baylor
-Eastern Washington @ Washington
-Lamar @ SMU
-Fairleigh Dickinson @ Providence

Under The Radar Game of the Day: East Tennessee State at Georgia Southern

For last night’s Hoops HD Report featuring the triumphant return of Kyle Lamb – CLICK HERE

East Tennessee State (5-2, 4-2 D1) at Georgia Southern (5-0, 4-0 D1) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day features a pair of teams coming off of exempt tournament championships – the East Tennessee State Buccaneers and the Georgia Southern Eagles. ETSU won the Mainland portion of the Cayman Islands Classic with a pair of home wins against Chicago State and Sam Houston State. The Bucs also have wins at Winthrop and at home against North Dakota State; their only losses are at Georgia State and Creighton. Not only do all 5 starters for ETSU average double figures in points scored; Jeromy Rodriguez (11.7 PPG and 11.9 RPG) and Mladen Armus (10.4 PPG, 10.0 RPG) are also averaging double-doubles through their first seven games.

Georgia Southern has had more than a week off of game action after winning the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase. Their victories came against Florida Atlantic, Pepperdine and Montana; FAU and Montana’s only losses of the season thus far have come at the hands of the Eagles. Tookie Brown was the MVP of the tournament and Montae Glenn was also named to the All-Tournament team for his weekend performance. Another noteworthy stat for Georgia Southern – this is the first time they’ve started 5-0 in consecutive seasons since 1949-50 and 1950-51!
