Under the Radar Game of the Day – Friday, November 22nd

Illinois State (3-1, 2-1 D1) vs. McNeese (2-2, 1-2 D1) – 3:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

There are a lot of exempt games to choose from today, but the UTR Game of the Day goes to the US Virgin Islands for the opening round of the Paradise Jam that features the Illinois State Redbirds and the McNeese Cowboys. McNeese has been a slight disappointment coming out of the gate – they missed chances at solid wins against South Dakota State (albeit on a neutral floor in name only) and Alabama. Nonetheless, they are a potential favorite to win the Paradise Jam. Former Providence guard Alyn Breed leads the Cowboys with 17.5 points a game through their first four games.

Illinois State’s season got off to a bad start with a 2-point loss at home against UT-Martin, but the Redbirds have rebounded with 3 straight wins, notably a 9-point win at North Dakota State and a double-digit win against preseason MAC favorite Ohio. Dalton Banks led the Redbirds with 23 points in their win against OU.

-The In-Season Tournaments get rolling today!!!

-Alabama basically kept Illinois at arms length for the entire game. It never really felt like the Tide were not in control and they cruised to a 100-87 win that perhaps wasn’t even as close as the score indicated.

-Grand Canyon continues to struggle out of the gate as they fell at home to UC Davis 75-68. The loss to Arizona State was a missed opportunity, but the loss to UC Davis is a big setback. We had thought this was a top 40 team, and they still may end up being that, but they haven’t shown it so far, and they don’t get many strikes if they want to end up inside the bubble. I know they are still down a key player, and that UC Davis isn’t bad, but this is the kind of game you would expect a solid NCAA Tournament team to be able to win at home.

-Arizona State BARELY escaped Cal Poly last night 93-89. They’re 5-1 on the year with the only loss being a very close game against Gonzaga, but they dodged a bullet last night.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-MIAMI FL VS DRAKE (Charleston Classic). Both teams are unbeaten and Miami has blown through their buy games. I wouldn’t call this a huge test, but Drake probably is better than the teams the Canes have been blowing out. I still think Miami can have a big year and make the NCAA Tournament. This event is a chance for them to get some notable wins away from home that aren’t just home buy games.

-OKLAHOMA STATE VS FLORIDA ATLANTIC (Charleston Classic). FAU doesn’t have any notable wins yet other than perhaps Liberty, but I do really like how they’ve played. They hung in with both UCF and Charleston and nearly beat both of them. This event is a chance for them to pick up some notable wins that will look good on their tournament resume. Oklahoma State is 3-0, but they’ve only played in home buy games and they didn’t exactly blow out their opponents, so this will be their toughest test of the year so far.

-SETON HALL VS VCU (Charleston Classic). Seton Hall has been underwhelming so far. While VCU hasn’t lost, they haven’t been tested yet like they will in this event. This is a chance for them to pick up some notable neutral floor wins.

-BAYLOR VS SAINT JOHN’S (Bahamas Championship). The Johnnies come into this one 4-0 and just had a really nice win against New Mexico, but this is their first game away from home and it comes against a Baylor team that is super talented and already has a nice win against Arkansas. In short, this is a resume building opportunity for both teams.

-SYRACUSE VS TEXAS (Legends Classic). I’m not sure what’s so legendary about this match-up. Syracuse is unbeaten, but they barely won each of their three buy games. Today, they’re not playing a buy game. They’re playing Texas, who to be fair has no wins yet that weren’t home buy games, and for that matter has no wins against a team that has a D1 win yet, but still at least looks the part. Both these teams could use this to make their resume not look like doodoo.

-VANDERBILT VS NEVADA (Charleston Classic). Both teams are unbeaten, and each has what is at least a semi-notable win so far, but this is the first time either team will have played away from home yet, so we should learn a little more about them tonight.

-TEXAS TECH VS SAINT JOSEPH’S (Legends Classic). This is the first test for Texas Tech, and while many people wrote Saint Joe’s off after their loss to Central Connecticut, I still think Joe’s could have a good year this year. They’ve beaten rivals Villanova and Penn in their last two games, and have a chance to pick up a quality win tonight as well as take a step into the national spotlight.

-VIRGINIA VS TENNESSEE (Bahamas Championship). Tennessee has just looked awesome. They haven’t beaten any really good teams, but they’ve absolutely dump-trucked a few decent ones. Virginia comes in 3-0, and they did beat Villanova, but Tennessee is on a whole other level compared to anyone they’ve played so far.

-EASTERN WASHINGTON AT WASHINGTON STATE. On paper, Wazzu can get to a respectable 5-1 with a win, but what makes this game so interesting is how many players and coaches for Wazzu were a part of Eastern Washington’s program a year ago.

-MEMPHIS AT SAN FRANCISCO. I’ve been very critical of Memphis for the past…ohhh…six years or so, but they may actually be starting to win me over. They come in unbeaten and have a nice win at UNLV. This is probably their toughest test of the season so far. San Francisco is 4-0 and the Sobrato Center is not an easy place to play. The Dons already have a win against a good (we think) Boise State team, and if Memphis can get this one on the road, they’ll REALLY have my attention!

-OREGON AT OREGON STATE. It’s a rivalry game between two unbeaten teams!! Whether or not either team is any good still remains to be seen. Oregon did beat Troy pretty badly their last time out, and while that was a buy game, Troy is a pretty good UTR team. This is the first road game for the Ducks and probably their biggest test. Oregon State really hasn’t been tested either as they’ve just blown through four buy games.

BUY GAMES (and other somewhat notable games):

-Ohio U vs Middle Tennessee (Myrtle Beach Invitaitonal) – MTSU is 3-1 and a good showing in this event will put some sparkle on their resume
-LaSalle vs UC San Diego (Boardwalk Battle) – La Salle can get to 5-0 and pick up their 2nd win away from home
-East Carolina vs Jacksonville State (Boardwalk Battle) – ECU is unbeaten but doesn’t yet have a win away from home
-UNC Greensboro @ Indiana
-Radford @ Clemson
-ETAMU @ Oklahoma
-Princeton vs Wright State (Myrtle Beach Invitaitonal) – Princeton hasn’t looked all that strong so far this season, but they could still have a big year and this event is an opportunity for them
-Oral Roberts @ Ole Miss – Ole Miss can get to 5-0
-Tarleton State @ Michigan
-Grambling @ New Mexico

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Thursday, November 21st

Princeton (4-1) vs. Wright State (3-2, 1-2 D1) – 8:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes place in the Myrtle Beach Invitational – an opening round game between the Princeton Tigers and the Wright State Raiders. Princeton is no stranger to close games this year – despite a home loss to Loyola-Chicago last week, the Tigers do have road wins against Northeastern and Merrimack to soften the blow a bit. The three-headed monster of Dalen Davis, Xaivian Lee and Caden Pierce lead the way for Princeton.

Wright State is going through a bit of a transition under new head coach Clint Sargent, but he was the associate head coach under Scott Nagy the past few seasons. The Raiders have played on the road for all three of their D1 games; they have losses to Kentucky and Toledo but did beat the Miami Redhawks last week. Brandon Neal is averaging over 21 points a game for Wright State.

Under the Radar – Nov 20th

We have a jam packed and somewhat extended addition of Under the Radar as we are about to head into several in-season tournaments. Rocco Miller is actually joining us from Daytona Beach as he is on location at the Boardwalk Battle that begins tomorrow. Our feature conference is the Ivy League, and the story of the season so far is Columbia, who is off to a 6-0 start. Princeton is also a team to keep an eye on in that league.

After that we go through the other 22 UTR conferences and discuss how UTRGV nearly pulled off a big upset at Wisconsin and is worth keeping an eye on for the rest of the year, how some multiple ASun teams have won road buy games, the overall strength of the Big West, and more! And, as we do every week, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

The Olympians: HoopsHD interviews David Stockton about 2-time Olympic gold medalist/his father John

The NBA Finals date back to 1947 (when they were known as the Basketball Association of America Finals) and the very 1st NCAA tourney was held in 1939. Olympic basketball competition is even older: it debuted as a demonstration event in 1904, and the men’s version became a medal sport in 1936, with the women finally getting their chance to go for the gold in 1976. The United States has dominated Olympic basketball competition from the start: the men have now won 17 gold medals in the 20 tournaments they have participated in during the past 88 years, while the women have won 10 gold medals in the 12 tournaments in which they have competed during the past 48 years. While we must wait 4 years until the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will fill the void by interviewing as many prior Olympic players/coaches as possible. We continue our coverage by chatting with David Stockton (who is in DC this week as part of the USA Men’s AmeriCup Qualifying Team’s 12-man roster for games vs. Puerto Rico and the Bahamas) about his father John being 1 of the best point guards ever and winning a pair of gold medals in 1992/1996.

Your father John was born in Spokane, went to high school at Gonzaga Prep, his grandfather Houston played football for the Bulldogs, and his father Jack is also an alum: how easy was his choice to go to college at Gonzaga? I think it was a very easy choice. He is still a homebody and did not want to stray far from the city where he grew up.

In the spring of 1984 he was drafted 16th overall by Utah: did he see that as a validation of his college career, or the realization of a lifelong dream of reaching the NBA, or other? I think it meant the world to him. I do not think he really expected it because he is a very humble guy.

He made the Dream Team in 1992: how did he feel about being 1 of 11 future Hall of Famers on that team (along with Charles Barkley/Larry Bird/Clyde Drexler/Patrick Ewing/Magic Johnson/Michael Jordan/Karl Malone/Chris Mullin/Scottie Pippen/David Robinson) playing for a Hall of Fame coach (Chuck Daly)? I assume it was a dream come true: basketball heaven!

He was part of a 117-85 win over Croatia in the final: what did it mean to him to represent his country, and what did it mean to him to win a gold medal? It must be up there as 1 of the best accolades you can get: there is nothing better.

He was picked to be a member of Dream Team II at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta: what kind of a home-court advantage did he have while playing in his home country, and did he give the new guys any advice about what to expect as 1 of the 5 guys who played for the original Dream Team in 1992 (along with Barkley/Malone/Pippen/Robinson)? At that point the world was still very far behind Team USA (whose roster was stacked) so they did not need a home-court advantage.

In Game 6 of the 1997 Western Conference Finals he had 25 PTS/13 AST and made a series-clinching 3-PT shot over his Olympic teammate Barkley at the buzzer to send the Jazz to the Finals (www.youtube.com/watch?v=AboGCfdKyOI): where does that rank among the highlights of his career? I would assume that it is up there as 1 of the best. The Jazz fought for a long time with that core group of players and they finally broke through in 1997 and made the Finals.

He led the NBA in APG for 9 consecutive seasons: what made him such a great PG? He always tried to make his teammates better, which is what a PG is supposed to do.

He only missed 22 games during his 19-year career and never missed the playoffs: what was the secret to his stamina/success? I wish I knew! He eats very healthy and stays in great shape. If I knew that answer, then I would be hurt less in my own career.

He still holds the NBA records for career AST (15,806) & STL (3,265) by a wide margin: do you think that anyone will ever break his records? I would say no, just due to the way the game is now. As far as AST, you would probably have to play 20 years and average 15 APG for several years in a row.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009 for his individual career and in 2010 as a member of the Dream Team, and in 2021 he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team: when people look back on his career, how do you think he should be remembered the most? As a winner who made the playoffs for 19 straight years (which is still an NBA record) and was so effective for so long. He also played every night, so there is also that toughness factor.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Wednesday, Nov 20th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Marquette pretty much maintained a safe lead against Purdue for most of the game, and then really blew it open in the final frew minutes for a 76-58 statement win. Seeing as how Marquette also has a big road win at Maryland, they’re probably now one of the more proven teams in the country. Granted, I know it’s early, but so far they’ve done a lot more than what most teams have done.

-DePaul is now 5-0! Granted, they’ve done nothing other than beat weak UTR teams in home buy games, but last year they weren’t even capable of doing that!

-Northwestern got a huge scare from Montana State, but held on to win 72-69 and avoid a damaging upset.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-ILLINOIS VS ALABAMA (Birmingham, AL). Alabama has already had a major test and is coming off a hard fought loss against Purdue. Tonight they face another very tough opponent in Illinois, but under much friendlier circumstances seeing as how the game is in Birmingham and not a true road game. It’s also the first real test of the season for the Illini, and oftentimes the first test is one of the harder ones.

-Siena @ Xavier – X can stay unbeaten
-Columbia @ Long Island – Columbia can get to 6-0 on the season and pick up their 3rd true road win
-Lafayette @ Rhode Island – Rhody is 3-0
-New Mexico State @ Dayton – both teams are unbeaten, but New Mexico State struggled to win some of their buy games and Dayton already has a win against Northwestern
-Purdue Fort Wayne @ Penn State – Penn State can get to 5-0
-Jacksonville @ Virginia Tech
-Southern @ Texas A&M
-Merrimack @ Rutgers
-Mount Saint Mary’s @ Georgetown
-Long Beach State @ Gonzaga – I mean SHEESH! When is Gonzaga finally going to play a decent opponent!!??
-UC Davis @ Grand Canyon
-Cal Poly @ Arizona State
-Stanislaus State (nonD1) @ Saint Mary’s
-UTEP @ UC Santa Barbara – UCSB can get to 5-0 with a win
-Pepperdine @ UNLV
-San Jose State @ USC
-Norfolk State @ Stanford – Stanford is still unbeaten
-Idaho State @ UCLA
