Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Tuesday, Nov 19th

NEWS AND NOTES:

CLICK HERE for the latest HOOPS HD REPORT Video Podcast

-Gonzaga was able to keep San Diego State at arms length for pretty much the entire game and pull off an 80-67 win on the road. It was the Zags’ first true road win of the season, and it’s one that they should end up getting a lot of credit for seeing as how San Diego State isn’t likely to lose too many at home.

-Wisconsin barely, and i mean BARELY held on to beat UTRGV 87-84. The lead seesawed back and forth for the entire second half, and UTRGV actually had a chance to win on the last possession of the game as they were down by 1 with the ball, but the shot they got up didn’t go in and Wisky escaped after two more freethrows. Still, it was an amazing effort by UTRGV, and when you look at how they won the Greenbrier Tipoff and were also reasonably competitive against Creighton, you start to think that the Vaqueros are a team that can make a lot of noise in the Southland this year.

-Other than that it was a pretty chalky night with most of the teams winning the games you would expect them to win.

-Last, and definitely least, THIS HAPPENED yesterday…

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-HOFSTRA AT FLORIDA STATE. Hofstra has already racked up a neutral floor win over Seton Hall, and a road win at UMass. They’ve outperformed Florida State up to this point, and while this is probably Hofstra’s toughest test of the season so far, it’s also true that Hofstra is probably better than anyone Florida State has managed to beat so far. Also, if Hofstra does pull this off, then their early resume is going to look pretty good.

-PURDUE AT MARQUETTE. Both teams are ranked in the top 15 and both have already won really big games to earn it. Marquette got a huge road win at Maryland, and Purdue just knocked off Alabama, so both have been tested and both have passed the tests. Simply put, this should be a great basketball game in front of a crazy fun crowd and will likely be a protected seed caliber win come March.

BUY GAMES (and others worth noting):

-Loyola MD @ Boston College
-East Texas A&M @ UConn – ETAMU rolls out its new branding!!!
-Lipscomb @ Kentucky
-Cincinnati @ Northern Kentucky – The BATTLE OF THE BIG MAC BRIDGE!! It’s a road game for Cincinnati, but it will probably end up looking like a home buy game
-Florida A&M @ Florida
-North Dakota @ Notre Dame
-Tennessee Tech @ UCF
-Delaware State @ Providence
-Evansville @ Ohio State
-Cleveland State @ Minnesota
-Alabama A&M @ Georgia
-Canisius @ Maryland
-Western Carolina @ Wake Forest
-Bellarmine @ Louisville
-Bethune Cookman @ Tulane
-UNC Wilmington @ Kansas – both teams are unbeaten, and UNCW already has a road win, but it still appears to be a very big mismatch
-Samford @ Michigan State
-Charleston Southern @ LSU
-Alcorn State @ TCU
-Mississippi Valley State @ Kansas State
-Rider @ Iowa – Rider is 3-1 in road games, but was blown out against UCLA, which was their only real test
-Southern Utah @ Loyola Chicago – both teams are unbeaten, but Loyola Chicago has clearly been more tested
-Eastern Illinois @ DePaul
-Montana State @ Northwestern

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Tuesday, November 19th

Oral Roberts (2-2, 0-2 D1) at Belmont (3-1, 2-1 D1) – 7:30 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day heads to Nashville for a matchup of perennial UTR Contenders as the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles visit the Belmont Bruins. ORU is still looking for their first road win of the season (and their first D1 win, for that matter) after losses on the road against Minnesota and crosstown rival Tulsa. Sam Alajiki is currently averaging 12.3 points a game and 8.3 rebounds a game for ORU.

Belmont had a slow week to start the year with a non-D1 win and a tough loss in the closing seconds against Furman, but the Bruins have rebounded last week with two wins on the road. The first was a win in the final seconds in the Battle of the Boulevard at Lipscomb; the second win was a 79-71 decision at Air Force. Isaiah Walker had the game-winning 3-point play for Belmont against Lipscomb.

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Some of the top UTR teams yesterday that had shots at big time opponents ended up getting big time beaten. Austin Peay was never in the game at Tennessee and lost 103-68. Tennessee is really good, and while I didn’t think the Govs would win, I didn’t think they’d get blown out as badly as they did.

-Troy was also blown off the floor by Oregon 82-61. This one did surprise me. It would have been a tough game for Troy to win, but I was surprised they were beaten so handily. Just the other night Troy had hung in pretty tough with Arkansas. The Razorbacks really didn’t pull away until the end of the game. So, maybe we need to keep an eye on the Ducks.

-Saint John’s picked up a nice 85-71 home win against a New Mexico team that came into the game looking pretty good. It’s probably one of the more impressive wins we’ve seen out of the Johnnies in a while.

-Saint Mary’s barely held off Nebraska in their 77-74 win out at the Pentagon. Saint Mary’s remains unbeaten and still may be finding themselves a little bit, and Nebraska may be better than what many of us were giving them credit for.

-Boise State pulled away from Clemson in the 2nd half for an 84-71 win. It was a nice win for the Broncos despite them being at home, and it was one that they kind of needed since all they had prior to this was home buy wins.

-Mississippi State, who is one of many SEC teams we are big on this year, held off Utah 78-73 for what is probably their nicest win of the season so far. The Bulldogs trailed by double-digits at the half, but had a great second half for the comeback win.

-Liberty blew Charleston off of Charleston’s own floor 68-47. This was the last game of an event that had simply been awesome to watch. Well, all the games were awesome until this one, I guess.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-NORTH TEXAS AT MCNEESE. McNeese is basically out of strikes if they want to land inside the bubble. Their next D1 win will be their first, and while North Texas is a tough opponent who comes in unbeaten and has already won a road game, it’s the kind of game McNeese should be able to win at home if they believe themselves to be a legit top 40 team.

-NORTHERN COLORADO AT WASHINGTON STATE. This is a pretty good Northern Colorado team who’s only loss so far was a very close game against Colorado. Wazzu comes in at 3-1 and will need to be on a bit of an upset alert tonight.

-GONZAGA AT SAN DIEGO STATE. This will be a very tough road test for Gonzaga, and they’ll be playing in front of what I think is one of the most rabid and most awesome student sections in the country. But the Zags are REALLY good, and they are up for a tough road test. San Diego State comes in at 2-0, but this is hands down their biggest test of the season so far, and may be one of their biggest tests of the season all year.

-Miami OH @ Michigan – Michigan had a nice win against TCU their last time out and should blow through this one
-Colgate @ NC State
-American @ High Point – High Point can improve to 4-0
-NJIT @ George Washington – GW can get to 4-0
-VMI @ Pittsburgh
-Mississippi College (nonD1) @ Lousiana Tech – LA Tech is unbeten
-Monmouth @ Wichita State
-IU Indy @ Iowa State
-Pacific @ Arkansas
-Arkansas Pine Bluff @ Texas Tech
-UTRGV @ Wisconsin
-Prairie View @ SMU
-North Alabama @ Auburn
-Montana @ Utah State

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Monday, November 18th

American (1-3) at High Point (4-0) – 7:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day features the High Point Panthers as they host the American University Eagles. High Point is in the midst of a 7-game homestand; they defeated UAB 68-65 in their most recent outing. D’Maurian Williams had 23 points for the Panthers and Kimani Hamilton added 18 points for a High Point team that was picked to finish first in the Big South this year.

American, on the other hand, wraps up a 3-game road trip tonight that has already included losses at North Carolina and Siena. The Eagles’ lone victory was a 67-55 win at home against Harvard. Matt Rogers averages 13.8 points a game for AU.
