The Hoops HD Selection Committee – Thursday, March 8th

Tonight, we kicked off our annual Hoops HD Selection Committee meetings via Skype conference call. Our night consisted of 3 separate tasks: 1) scrub off teams from the Under Consideration board that will not be added to the field; 2) vote on our Centenary Award winner and 3) add all the remaining 8 at-large teams to the board.

On the first front, we reduced our list of teams Under Consideration to 21 for the remaining at-large spots that opened up earlier tonight. With every team from the ACC, Big East and Big 12 now on the at-large board, we are assured of at least 3 additional at-large spots opening up.

Unlike years past, we have a close call for the Centenary Award this season. Our conventional candidate would be Delaware State (2-28 in D-I, 2-14 in the MEAC); however, we also have Pittsburgh as a Centenary finalist this year since they went an imperfect 0-19 in the ACC this season (and fired Kevin Stallings earlier today). The call is close enough that we do not have a winner as of tonight; we will keep you posted in tomorrow night’s recap.

Last, and certainly not least, we began to debate the merits of teams on the Under Consideration board. Each member of our Committee submitted a list of 8 teams via secret ballot to our chairman Chad Sherwood. The top 8 teams would then be ranked 1 through 8 and the top 4 teams were added to our at-large board. The first 4 teams added to our board tonight were NC State, Kansas State, Houston and Missouri. We then debated the remaining teams Under Consideration a little further and submitted lists of 4 teams per member via secret ballot. The top 4 vote-getters were added to the previous 4 carryover teams and were ranked 1 through 8. In this wave of balloting, we added Florida State, Providence, Butler and Texas to our field. It was at this point that we were assured of at-large spots opening up in the Big East and Big 12 that we mentioned earlier.

Below is the Selection Board through tonight’s games; please note that the teams listed in orange in the Under Consideration column are still playing games in their conference tournaments and can further enhance their profiles. Teams not shaded have completed play during the regular season.

For tomorrow night’s meetings, we will begin seeding the top 8 lines on the Master Seed list. While the real committee in New York has already seeded the top 2 lines as of Wednesday, we are taking results from both tonight and tomorrow night into account as we begin the seeding process. We will also fill any remaining at-large spots that are guaranteed to open up through Friday night’s games; as of right now, that would be three spots. Stay tuned to see our committee report for tomorrow night!

Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews South Dakota State FR SG David Jenkins Jr.

On Tuesday South Dakota State beat in-state rival South Dakota 97-87 in the Summit title game to earn an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament. The Jackrabbits won 18 games last year before losing to #1 seed Gonzaga in the NCAA tourney, but this year they are 28-6 and claimed the school’s 5th NCAA tourney bid in the past 7 years. Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with FR SG David Jenkins Jr. about winning the Summit title this week and being named conference ROY last week.

You grew up in Tacoma, WA: what made you choose the Jackrabbits? Coach TJ used to be an assistant coach at Washington and I have known him for awhile. He gave me a scholarship offer after my junior year but the only thing I knew about South Dakota is that it was cold! He made me another offer after I went to prep school and we just kept building our relationship.  I finally realized that he was the only coach in the nation who wanted me.

Last year you played at Sunrise Christian Academy with a bunch of teammates who will also be in this year’s NCAA tourney (Isiah Jasey at Texas A&M/Derrick Walker at Tennessee/Matt Haarms at Purdue/Samba Ndiaye at Charleston): how did being around all of this great competition improve your own skills? It helped prepare me because I got to go against top players each and every day, which I also did during AAU ball. I remember playing Vermont Academy when they were the #1 team in the country, and we beat them.

Coach TJ Otzelberger was named 2018 conference COY last week: what makes him such a good coach, and what is the most important thing that you have learned from him? He is not too worried about winning/losing: he cares more about his players. We had a conditioning test earlier this year and 1 of our guys could not make it: he just cared about the progress of his players even if it would end up costing us a win. He really believes in us no matter what. I had a terrible game in our conference tourney opener and he sat me. He knew that I would have a bounce-back game if I was more aggressive, and I did.

The awards continued last week as you were named 2018 conference ROY: what did it mean to you to receive such an outstanding honor? It is obviously a blessing but I could not have won it without my teammates. They keep telling me to be aggressive on the offensive end night in and night out.

In the Summit tourney title game on Tuesday you scored a team-high 29 PTS in a 10-PT win over South Dakota: how big a deal is the rivalry, and how were you able to play your best when it mattered the most? The rivalry is huge: my guys told me coming into the season that it would be a big game. We just executed down the stretch even after our best player Mike Daum went out.

Daum ended up being named Summit tourney MVP for the 3rd straight year: what makes him such a great player? Just his ability to score at such a high clip both inside and out. He is 1 of the best shooters I have been around in a long time: when he actually misses a shot I am surprised. He can shoot over defenders, pump-fake, and makes FTs at a very high rate.

The other 4 starters on your team (including Daum) are all juniors/seniors: how have you been able to fit in with these veterans? My guys believe in me the same way I believe in them. They do not treat me as a freshman. A big part of my success was the maturity I gained from my year at prep school.

Your 1st 2 road losses this season were to the 2 best teams in the state of Kansas (Kansas/Wichita State): which of these projected tourney teams impressed you the most? I would say Wichita State: even though we competed with them (eventually losing 95-85) they are really good defensive team. I feel that we had a bad game against Kansas (a 98-64 loss). Even though the Jayhawks are a high-level team, I think that the Shockers would be harder team for us if we end up having a rematch in the NCAA tourney.

Your team is ranked in the top-10 in the nation in FGM/3PM/FTM/REB/PPG: what makes your team so successful on offense? A big part is to get in our individual work in and be in the gym all of the time: FTs before practice, extra shots after practice, etc. Coach sometimes makes time for us to get extra shots up during practice.

What kind of seed do you think that you deserve, and what kind of seed do you think that you are going to get? I feel that we should get a #12 or #13 seed. We were a #16 seed last year (after going 8-8 in conference play during the regular season) but we went 13-1 in the league this year. A better seed would help so we could play a team that we can beat and then try to make a run.

Tonight, our Hoops HD Selection Committee not only met for our annual pasta dinner, but we began our process for selecting the NCAA Tournament field as all of our panelists submitted 2 lists to our chairman Chad Sherwood. The first list consisted of up to 36 at-large teams that is colloquially known as the “First Ballot.” For a team to be added to the At-Large board, teams needed to get at least 8 out of 10 votes from our panel (much like the NCAA Selection Committee that meets in New York tonight). As of tonight, 28 teams were voted on to the at-large board. This means that there will be a minimum of 8 more teams that will be voted on to our at-large board when our Committee convenes via Skype conference call tomorrow night. We will also vote on more at-large teams as teams currently on the at-large board win automatic bids in their respective conference tournaments.

The second list of teams consists of “Under Consideration” – any team that did not merit at-large consideration on the first ballot and received at least 3 votes (on either the first or second list) are added to the Under Consideration list. Teams that finished in first place in their conference in the regular season are also automatically added to the list of teams Under Consideration. As of tonight, we have 47 teams added to the Under Consideration list plus our Centenary Award winner that will be announced tomorrow night. (CLICK HERE for a history of the Centenary Award).

Without further ado, here is the current cross-country board: (click on the board to enlarge)

The teams listed on the left in blue are the 13 teams that have already clinched automatic bids into the NCAA Tournament. The teams listed in green are the 28 teams that are currently listed as at-large selections. The teams listed in white are teams under consideration for the final at-large spots. The column on the right hand side is the master seed list that we will begin to fill on Friday night.

For tomorrow, our first major task will be to scrub the list of teams that are under consideration. After we vote on our Centenary Award winner, we will fill the remaining 8 at-large spots from the 47 teams currently under consideration. Each committee member will debate and then vote on 8 teams in the first round of balloting via secret ballot; the top 8 vote-getters will then be ranked 1 through 8. The top 4 teams out of that group will be added to the at-large board. Once that round of voting is over, there will be further debate and then each panelist will vote in 4 more teams from the Under Consideration board. The top 4 teams will be added along with the 4 carryover teams from the previous round of balloting. Again, the teams will be ranked 1 through 8 and the top 4 vote-getters will be added to the at-large board. Depending on results from other major conferences tomorrow night, more at-large spots should open up, but it is likely they will not be filled until Friday at the earliest.

Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews UNC Greensboro head coach Wes Miller

On Monday UNC Greensboro beat East Tennessee State 62-47 in the SoCon title game to earn an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament. The Spartans won 25 games last year but lost to the Buccaneers in the tourney title game and ended up in the NIT. This year they took it up a notch by going 27-7 and claiming the school’s 1st NCAA tourney bid since 2001. Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with Coach Wes Miller about winning an NCAA title as a player at North Carolina and being named conference COY last week.

You began your college career at James Madison but transferred to UNC as a walk-on and won the 2005 NCAA title: what is the most important thing that you learned from Coach Roy Williams, and what did it mean to you to win a title? I do not think I understood at the time the impact it would have on my life. I always tell my players that anytime I have a speaking engagement or am meeting someone I am always introduced as a “national champion” even though I never played a single minute in that title game. As far as Coach Williams it is such a loaded question because I learned something from him every day I was around him and transferred there because I knew that I wanted to eventually become a coach. Some of the biggest things I learned from him were the importance of work ethic/character.

After shooting 44.1 3P% as a junior in 2006 (which remains in the top-10 in school history), you had a 4-PT win over Murray State in the NCAA tourney before getting upset by 5-PT at the hands of 1 of the greatest Cinderellas ever in George Mason: what is the key to making shots from behind the arc, and what is the secret to success for double-digit seeds in March? The key to shooting is having the right mechanics and then the repetition to back it up. Every great shooter can reproduce their shot over and over thanks to spending time in the gym and having the confidence to know that it is going in. It will be a new experience for me to not be the favorite so we will just try to prepare and play our game 1 possession at a time.

In the 2007 NCAA tourney as team captain you beat Michigan State for the 2nd time in 3 years: how excited do you think Tom Izzo would be to see you a decade later in a possible Spartans-vs.-Spartans 1st round match-up?! I do not imagine that there are too many top-5 seeds who will be worried about us but it will be a great opportunity for us to be on the national stage.

In December of 2011 you replaced UNC Greensboro head coach Mike Dement on an interim basis and somehow went 11-11 en route to being named 2012 conference COY: how difficult was it to take over a 2-8 team in the middle of the season, and did you feel that you were ready despite being the youngest D-1 head coach in the nation at age 28? It was an incredible opportunity at the time and to have a chance to lead my own team was a blessing. It was a difficult situation due to our rough start and not having any time to prepare, but looking back on it I was able to get so much experience at such a young age. The failures we had early on during our tenure have helped us grow into who we now are more than anything else.

Last March you made the NIT before losing to Syracuse (Andrew White scored 34 PTS): what did your team learn from that game that you think can help them this March? We were much more prepared for our conference tourney this year then we were a year ago, which I think had a lot to do with us being a lot more nervous last year during the 1st 10 minutes of the game at Syracuse. I am hoping that experience prepares us for the NCAA tourney last year, just like making the SoCon title game last year helped us in this year’s conference tourney.

You opened this season in November with a loss at Virginia, had a 6-PT loss at Wake Forest the day after Thanksgiving, then had a 5-PT win at NC State in mid-December: what makes the Cavaliers 1 of the best teams in the nation, and how were you able to overcome a 14-PT 1st half deficit to beat the Wolfpack in Raleigh? We have played Virginia as our season opener for 2 years in a row. What amazes me is their consistency from possession to possession: they do not take plays off and always make you guard them on offense. They do not take bad shots, they wear you down, and they simply do not turn the ball over. We have been down by double-figures in the 1st half a handful of times this year and came back to win the game several times. We have an experienced team who knows that the game is never over because we have been through so many battles.

What are your own memories of my pick for Game of the Year, which was your 1-PT 3-OT win over Liberty on December 2nd (the Flames had an 11-PT lead with under 5 minutes left in regulation before G Francis Alonso took over down the stretch with a 3-PT bank shot with 5 seconds left in regulation, a pair of 3-PT shots in the final 15 seconds of double-OT, and then the game-winning jumper with 2 seconds left in triple-OT)? Francis is 1 of the greatest shooters that I have ever seen. We were coming off of a pair of losses and were really hungry for a win. When I think back to that game we did not play that well offensively but played incredibly tough/together. We had a bunch of guys in foul trouble but Francis just made play after play to get us over the hump. 1 theme this year has been that if we have to have a basket, he is the person who has come through for us on a number of occasions. It was a momentum win for us to win in that fashion when things had not been going our way.

Your roster includes players from Canada/the Netherlands/Spain: what kind of recruiting philosophy do you have? We have really tried to recruit our area: we have 8-9 kids from North Carolina and look for players throughout the region. My assistant Mike Roberts had led the charge on recruiting internationally, and during the last 2 years Francis (from Spain) and Jordy Kuiper (from the Netherlands) have become 2 of our better players. Mike deserves all of the credit for his day-to-day efforts.

Last week you were named 2018 conference COY and your 27 wins this year is the most in school history despite losing a pair of star seniors from last year in Diante Baldwin/RJ White: for a guy who was born in Greensboro, is it safe to assume that that this has been 1 of the best years of your entire life? The last 2 years have been really rewarding for me because a lot of the things we have envisioned from a daily approach have started to take shape within our program. I really enjoy the work so the experience during my whole time here has been great, but what has been really rewarding is to see how the culture has grown. We still work at it every day and it is great because everyone is buying in.

What kind of seed do you think that you deserve, and what kind of seed do you think that you are going to get? I do not think that we are entitled to anything so we will be excited to see where they place us on Sunday. We will be fired up to play wherever they send us!
