Under the Radar Game of the Day: Middle Tennessee at Old Dominion

Middle Tennessee at Old Dominion, 8:00 PM Eastern, Stadium Facebook Live

Although most people are thinking of Conference USA as a two team battle between Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky, the truth is that three teams enter today tied for first place in the loss column.  Middle Tennessee (8-1) holds a half game lead over Western Kentucky and Old Dominion (both 7-1).  Tonight, our Under the Radar Game of the Day presents one of the more intriguing remaining matchups of the season as Middle travels to Norfolk to take on ODU.  The visiting Blue Raiders are now 16-5 on the season and have notable wins at Western Kentucky, at Vanderbilt, at Murray State and a two game sweep of Florida Gulf Coast.  With their two worst losses being at Marshall and home to Belmont, there is a strong case to be made that this team is worthy of an at-large bid should they fail to capture CUSA’s automatic bid.  However, with tonight’s game being their last road game against a top 100 RPI opponent, a win may be a must.  Keep an eye, of course, on Nick King who is a scoring and rebounding machine, as well as teammates such as Giddy Potts and Brandon Walters.

Old Dominion enters play tonight at 16-4 overall, though their best win to date was a neutral court victory over Dayton.  The Monarchs 247 non-conference Strength of Schedule has likely put them in a position where only an automatic bid will put them in the Big Dance, though a win tonight and a win on February 24 at Western Kentucky might have a chance to upgrade their resume somewhat.  Trey Porter may be the key player for ODU tonight, especially is he can put up numbers like he did a few weeks ago against Marshall when we scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.  Also keep an eye on Randy Haynes, who had 24 points last time out, and BJ Stith, who is another nightly double-double threat.

Under the Radar: January 31st

This week we feature the Big West.  There are six games at the top of the standings that are all separated by just one game.  We discuss how competitive that league has been and what we think may happen moving forward.  From there, we run through all 22 UTR leagues and discuss how Vermont and Florida Gulf Coast are getting close to clinching home court advantage in their respective conferences, how Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky are right on the bubble out of Conference USA, Buffalo’s tough loss at Kent State,  New Mexico State’s continued dominance of the WAC, and much more.  As always, we end with this week’s UTR Top Ten list.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an mp3 version of the show…

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day from what has been a highly entertaining Big West season – CLICK HERE

-Florida went into Georgia last night and lost, which is typical of a Florida team that always surprises you by playing great when you think they’re overmatched, and always disappoints you when they go into a game that you expect them to win.  It was a nice win for a Georgia team that’s right on the bubble at the moment.

Other than that none of the results from last night were all that cataclysmic, but holy crap were there some close calls!

-When you’re having a bad year, things just never stop going bad even when you play well.  Last night Vanderbilt, who was just 8-13 on the year, went into Rupp Arena and exhibited an incredible effort where they literally led for the entire game.  Even as Kentucky fought their way back into it it still appear that Vandy had things in control in the final seconds.  Then after a bad Kentucky pass that resulted in a loose ball with less than 3 seconds to play, Vandy was whistled for a loose ball foul.  At least 70 feet from the basket.  With less than three seconds to play.  Kentucky hit both freethrows, forced overtime, and then won in overtime.

-Baylor, who is also in the midst of a frustrating season, once again led a ranked team on the road for most of the game, but let it slip away at the very end.  Oklahoma actually had to come from behind to pull off the 98-96 win.

-Saint John’s was at home against Xavier, and never seemed to trail in the game until the final minute.  Even then they had a chance to at least force overtime in the final few seconds, but Xavier held on and escaped.  The Johnnies are still looking for their first conference win.

-Rhode Island also got a huge scare from UMass after appearing to have the game in hand.  UMass came all the way back and got as close as 2, but Rhody held on to win.  Barely.  Again.

-Clemson did get a big home win against North Carolina, who has now lost three straight.  None of those losses are awful losses, and they certainly have time to make the ground up, but they do seem to be trending down a bit at the moment.

-TCU picked up a nice and much needed road win at Oklahoma State.  A good conference road win is just what they needed.

-Buffalo suffered their first conference loss as they fell in a tense one at Kent State last night 82-79.  This most likely shoots down what slim chances the Bulls had for an at-large bid.

-Texas A&M absolutely clobbered Arkansas last night and picked up a win that they desperately needed, but more important they actually LOOKED good for the first time in well over a month.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-PENN STATE AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten).  Michigan State is still very high in the rankings, but the top part of their resume is a little thin.  It’s important that they hold serve in games like this against a Penn State team that is most likely NIT bound.

-LSU AT TENNESSEE (SEC).  LSU is on the bubble, and Tennessee is on the cusp of a protected seed.  Both teams could really use this win to help them accomplish what they’re trying to accomplish.

-LOUISVILLE AT VIRGINIA (ACC).  Louisville has really been playing well lately, but Virginia is coming off what is perhaps the singular most impressive win of the season against Duke and is playing as well as anyone in the nation.  This is also a team that Louisville has struggled with in recent years, so this is a very tall order for the Cardinals.

-HOUSTON AT CINCINNATI (American).  Cincinnati is high in the rankings and should end up as a protected seed if they’re able to hold serve (which means winning virtually everything), and pick up at least one win against Wichita State.  Houston is right on the bubble.  A road win in a game like this could really tip the scale in their favor.

-WEST VIRGINIA AT IOWA STATE (Big 12).  There are no easy road wins in this conference, but as crazy as this is to say this is probably the least difficult road win to be had.  West Virginia may still be stinging after letting a big lead slip away against Kentucky at home and a road win would certainly help numb the sting.

-PITTSBURGH AT MIAMI FL (ACC).  Miami needs to take care of business and not lose to a sub 100 team (if not worse) at home.

-PROVIDENCE AT SETON HALL (Big East).  Providence is in our field, but not solidly in the top half of the bracket, so any win in a game like this would help boost them forward.  Seton Hall is in the top half of the bracket, but is no longer a protected seed.  At least not right now.  They can certainly get there if they can string together some wins.

-VERMONT AT BINGHAMTON (America East).  The chances of Vermont landing inside the bubble even if they win out are very slim, but they are at least slim.  At worst, they blow through the conference (again) and end up with home court advantage all throughout the conference tourney.  They are a potentially dangerous team to face in the Round of 64.

-FLORIDA STATE AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  Florida State’s resume keeps improving and they have a really good chance of adding another road win to it tonight.

-SYRACUSE AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  Syracuse is right on the bubble, and therefore every game has a pivotal feel to it.  If they win then it’s another road win on their resume.  If they lose then it means they’ve lost to a sub-NCAA Tournament team, and perhaps even sub-NIT team, and you don’t need that if you’re on the bubble.

-LOYOLA-CHICAGO AT BRADLEY (Missouri Valley). Loyola currently leads Bradley by 2 games in the Valley and a surprising Southern Illinois team by a game and a half. This is one of the Ramblers’ toughest tests remaining – Bradley is a perfect 10-0 at home against D-I competition this season.

-MARYLAND AT PURDUE (Big Ten).  Purdue has put together a nice little winning streak here lately.  They’ve done just fine!  Maryland is hovering around the bubble and if they want to be taken seriously then this is the kind of win that could certainly help, but that is a very tall order at this point.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  South Carolina is extremely bubbly right now and really needs to string together some wins.  Losing at home to a team that isn’t likely to make the field won’t help things at all.

-TEXAS AT TEXAS TECH (Big 12).  Texas is solidly in the field (for now), but definitely has a lot of room for improvement.  They also have a lot of opportunities, and a win in a game like this would go a very long way.  Texas Tech, for now, is still looking like a protected seed.

-VIRGINIA TECH AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC).  VA Tech is in range of the bubble and adding another road win to their resume will certainly help them out. BC has been tough at home this year with an 11-1 record that includes wins over Duke and Florida State. Clemson is the only visitor to win at Chestnut Hill so far this year.

-MISSOURI AT ALABAMA (SEC).  Alabama’s profile keeps getting better and better, and Missouri keeps looking more and more like a team that is squarely on the bubble.  Both teams’ resumes have room for improvement, and this is the kind of win that could definitely help them improve.

-CONNECTICUT AT CENTRAL FLORIDA (American). Highlighted because we love the Civil ConFLiCT!

-BUTLER AT MARQUETTE (Big East).  Both teams look to be relatively safe for now, but neither can turn on the cruise control yet.  This is a big game because it will be a quality win for whoever pulls it out.

-WYOMING AT COLORADO STATE (Mountain West, Front Range). Highlighted because we love the Front Range!

-ARIZONA AT WASHINGTON STATE (Pac Twelve).  It hasn’t always been easy or pretty, but Arizona keeps winning.  As for Wazzu, it hasn’t been easy or pretty since the end of November and that isn’t likely to change tonight.

-FRESNO STATE AT NEVADA (Mountain West).  The good news is that Nevada should go into the NCAAs on the first ballot if they hold serve.  The rough news is that they pretty much need to win out in order to hold serve.  This is yet another game against a decent but not NCAA Tournament caliber team that will do Nevada more harm to lose it than it will do them good to win it.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: UC-Irvine at Long Beach State

UC-Irvine at Long Beach State, 10:30 PM Eastern, Fox Sports Prime Ticket/Fox Sports San Diego/Fox College Sports-Pacific

The Under the Radar Game of the Day heads to the Big West conference tonight for a matchup between the Anteaters of UC-Irvine and the 49ers of Long Beach State.  The standings in this league have suddenly become an incredible logjam, with six teams entering play tonight within a game in the loss column of each other.  At 6-2 in conference, Long Beach State is currently technically the conference leader.  The 49ers are only 12-12 overall, though they have won 5 of their last 6 contests.  Gabe Levin led the way for Dan Monson’s team on Saturday in a win at Cal State-Northridge, scoring 19 points.

Although UC-Irvine is only 9-14 overall, the Anteaters are 4-3 in Big West play and a win tonight could tie them with Long Beach in the loss column (though still possibly behind a few of the other 2 loss teams at the top).  Irvine did pick up a solid home win last time out against UC-Riverside.  Tommy Rutherford had a double-double in that victory with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Jonathan Galloway picked up one as well, scoring 10 points to go with 14 boards.  Efforts like those will be needed again tonight if the Anteaters want to pull off the surprise win on the road.

NEWS AND NOTES

CLICK HERE for this week’s Hoops HD Report

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day between Buffalo and Kent State – CLICK HERE

-Kansas picked up a very impressive win against a very good K State team that was at home and jacked up, Michigan beat Northwestern, and Duke blew Notre Dame off the court in the second half.  That’s really it as far as tournament caliber teams.  But, when you look at all the games from UTR teams yesterday, it may have been the single most exciting day in college basketball history!!

-We had five overtime games, of those five, two were double OT games, and a third was a triple OT game.  Siena knocked off Saint Peter’s in a low scoring 3OT affair, Chattanooga upset UNCG in a double overtime thriller, Fairield pulled off a home upset over Iona in double overtime, Lipscomb avoided a loss to SC Upstate in double overtime, and grambling knocked off Mississippi Valley State in a Centenary stakes game in overtime.  Other action included a missed three point shot at the buzzer by The Citadel that would have knocked off East Tennessee State, Jacksonville hitting two freethrows with less than a second to play to beat Stetson, NJIT almost blowing a 20pt lead but holding on to beat Kennesaw State by 3, and a shot in the final second by Pine Bluff to beat Jackson State by just 2.  Much of this was all happening at the same time.  We recorded the Hoops HD Report (linked above) last night, and it was great fun having all of us online together while all this was going on!  Very little of it really meant anything at all as far as the NCAA Tournament goes, but it was still great!!

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-RHODE ISLAND AT UMASS (Atlantic Ten).  Rhody had a close call against Duquesne and now goes on the road to face their (sort of) rivals.  They shouldn’t have too much trouble picking up another road win, but UMass has played well at home at times.

-INDIANA AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten).  Ohio State is looking to rebound from a loss at the buzzer to Penn State that will make it a lot more difficult (but certainly not impossible) to end up as a protected seed.  They’re facing an Indiana team that’s having a rough year.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT CLEMSON (ACC).  North Carolina is coming off a somewhat surprising home loss to NC State, but is still in really good shape overall and should still be able to end up as a protected seed.  Clemson has struggled since losing one of their best players to an injury and barely held on to beat Georgia Tech over the weekend.  They’re at home, but this is still a very tall order.

-FLORIDA AT GEORGIA (SEC).  Florida is finally looking like a protected seed on a close to consistent basis, but they still have some work to do in order to end up with a seed that good.  Winning on the road against a Georgia team that’s on the bubble (and could really use a win like this for that reason) would go a long way.

-TCU AT OKLAHOMA STATE (Big 12).  After losing at Vanderbilt and being just 3-5 in the conference, this game suddenly has a very pivotal feel for TCU.  They face an Okie State team who also needs to string together some wins, and who has to look at games like this where they’re at home against non-protected seeds as winnable games that they need on their resume.  There is quite a bit at stake for both these teams tonight.

-XAVIER AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East)  Xavier continues to climb the rankings and right now looks like a solid #2 seed who still has an outside shot of ending up on the #1 line.  Saint John’s continues to play like crap in the conference, but they did give the Muskies a bit of a scare when they met earlier this year.

-AUBURN AT OLE MISS (SEC).  We at Hoops HD now think of Auburn as a solid protected seed, and if that’s true then this is the kind of game they should be expected to win.  Not just able to win, but expected to win.  It’s a road game against an NIT caliber team (if that).  Ole Miss has played well at home at times, but it’s still a game that a protected seeded caliber team should win.

-VANDERBILT AT KENTUCKY (SEC).  Kentucky is coming off their biggest regular season win in several years and has perhaps turned the corner.  They shouldn’t have too much trouble at home against a Vandy team that currently sits at the bottom of the league.

-ARKANSAS AT TEXAS A&M (SEC).  It’s certainly not too late for TAMU, but they now have to string together a rather long string of wins in order to end up inside the bubble and in the field.  Arkansas is a pretty strong team, but they’re not exactly at a point to where they can just put it on cruise control either.  This is one of many games that has a pivotal feel to it for both teams.

-NORTHERN NEW MEXICO (nondiv1) AT NEW MEXICO STATE.  Buy game.  And….why????

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Buffalo at Kent State

Buffalo at Kent State, 7:00 PM Eastern, espn3

The Buffalo Bulls are back in the spotlight again as the Under the Radar Game of the Day returns to the Mid-American Conference tonight.  Tonight’s game at Kent State may be the toughest remaining road test left on the Bulls’ regular season schedule.  Buffalo enters with a record of 16-5 overall and 8-0 in MAC play.  They have solid metrics, with the exception of their RPI — which is flat out amazing at 26.  More realistically, their KPI rating is in the mid-50s and their JNG is in the low 60s.  Leading the way for the Bulls this season has been Nick Perkins, who scored 20 last time out and CJ Massinburg, who has 7 double-doubles on the season.  Also, don’t forget Missouri transfer Wes Clark who has provided this team with even more depth since becoming eligible after the first semester.

Kent State enters tonight’s game at 11-10 overall and 5-3 in MAC play.  The Golden Flashes are coming off an 8 point road win at Central Michigan last time out.  Jaylin Walker and Kevin Zabo both scored over 20 points in that win, while Adonis De La Rosa notched a double-double.  Another strong team effort will be needed tonight if Kent State wants to hand the Bulls their first MAC loss of the season.
