Under the Radar Game of the Day: Missouri State at Northern Iowa

Missouri State at Northern Iowa, 9:00 PM Eastern, CBS Sports Network

The Under the Radar Game of the Day is escaping Winter Storm Grayson and taking a ‘trip’ to Cedar Falls, Iowa tonight for a key contest in the Missouri Valley Conference as the Northern Iowa Panthers play host to the Missouri State Bears.  Northern Iowa is close to freefall mode after a great 8-2 start to the season that included wins over SMU, North Carolina State and UNLV.  They have now dropped four straight games, including an 0-2 start in league play, and have quickly gone from a team that was toeing the at-large candidate line to a team just needing a win of any kind to remain in the picture in the MVC.  The Panthers shot only 35% from two point range in a 19 point loss at Bradley last time out, while allowing the Braves to hit 9 of 14 from behind the arc.  Those types of numbers on both ends of the court simply will not be enough to get it done against almost any level of competition.

Missouri State enters tonight’s game at 12-3 overall and 2-0 in MVC play.  The Bears picked up a solid road win at Valparaiso last time out, winning by 17 points.  Alize Johnson led the way with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists in that victory.  Despite a couple of hiccups during non-conference play, most notably a loss to Oral Roberts, Mo State appears primed to get things rolling and has a great chance to emerge as the favorite in the Missouri Valley.  A road win tonight, even if their opponent is struggling, will certainly go a long way to establishing them in such a position.

-Texas A&M’s wheels have completely fallen off.  On the freeway.  During rush hour.  They were blown out for the second time in about 72 hours yesterday, this time at home by Florida.  TAMU got off to a hugely impressive start to the season, but since then have battled off the court issues that are making them look bad on the court.  On the other hand, it was a fantastic win for a Florida team that needed to do something to right their own ship.

-Kansas lost for the second time at home this season, and for the third time in a home atmosphere, when they fell to Texas Tech.  It was one of the most impressive showings I’ve seen in a while.  Texas Tech came in with a fantastic game plan and sprinted ahead of Kansas at the beginning of the game.  Every time Kansas appeared to be building momentum, Texas Tech would come up with a big play to stall it.  We have to start thinking of the Red Raiders as a potential protected seed after a win like that.

-TCU picked up their first true road win of the season in an overtime thriller at Baylor.  The Horned Frogs continue to impress.

-Mississippi State came into last night with just one loss, but their schedule hadn’t been all that difficult so I wasn’t overly excited about them.  They picked up a really nice win against Arkansas last night, and even though it was at home it greatly improves their resume.

-Auburn continues to rack up wins, and they won their biggest game of the year so far at Tennessee last night.  The game seesawed back and for the entire way before Auburn finally opened it up in the final couple of minutes.  Tennessee is now off to an 0-2 start in league play and needs to string together some wins of their own in order to stay in the rankings.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-OLE MISS AT GEORGIA (SEC).  Georgia came up just short against Kentucky earlier this week, but they’re still off to a good start and are in good shape.  They need to win the winnable games in order to stay in good shape, and that means being able to beat Ole Miss at home.

-MARQUETTE AT PROVIDENCE (Big East).  Marquette is off to a good start and this would be a really nice road win on their resume.  Providence has sputtered this season and needs to have a big week to get things turned around.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT FLORIDA STATE (ACC).  Florida State was right in the game at Duke earlier this week, but couldn’t close it out.  Still, they’re having a great year and they host a highly ranked, but also highly inconsistent UNC team tonight that has a smattering of good wins away from home against Arkansas and Tennessee, but this would probably be their best win of the season to date.

-RUTGERS AT PURDUE (Big Ten).  Purdue seems to be heading toward a protected seed, but they need to hold serve in games like this and pretty much dominate all the teams in this league other than Michigan State in order for that to happen.

-CLEMSON AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC).  Clemson is into the rankings with just one loss on the season, and in most years this would be an easy assignment, but BC has drastically improved as well.  They were able to beat Duke at home, and if they can beat Duke at home then they can beat anyone in the conference at home.

-SYRACUSE AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  Syracuse has a solid 12-2 record and is looking for their second true road win of the season.  If they’re truly a tournament team then they should be able to get it against a so-so Wake Forest team.  Having said that, Wake is improving.

-MEMPHIS AT UCF (American).  This game has more NIT implications than NCAA implications, but if one or both of them could get hot in league play then they’d have a chance.

-GEORGE WASHINGTON AT DUQUESNE (Atlantic Ten).  It’s not likely at all that Duquesne will dance, but it is possible!!  It’s a winnable home game for a much improved Duquesne team that can remain unbeaten in A10 play.

-LA SALLE AT RHODE ISLAND (Atlantic Ten).  If Rhody can hold serve in conference play then they should cruise to the top half of the bracket come March.

-SAINT JOHN’S AT CREIGHTON (Big East).  The Johnnies are dealing with injuries, which is unfortunate considering how strong they were out of conference and how slowly they’ve started off in league play.  Winning at Creighton is a very tall order, especially when it’s a Creighton team that really feels like they need the win themselves.

-KENTUCKY AT LSU (SEC).  Kentucky held on to beat Georgia and has a rather tough road assignment tonight.  This is actually the first true road game of the year for the Wildcats, so it would add something to their resume that isn’t there yet.

-SAINT BONAVENTURE AT DAYTON (Atlantic Ten).  The Bonnies are having a fantastic season and should easily land inside the bubble if they’re able to hold serve in conference play, which means being able to win games like this.

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT OKLAHOMA (Big 12).  BEDLAM!!!!!!!!  I love this rivalry!!  Oklahoma came into the season unranked and is now looking like a Final Four caliber team.  Okie State has exceeded expectations as well, but not to the degree that Oklahoma has.  The Sooners should win at home, but if the Pokes can pull the upset then it catapults their resume through the roof.

-VIRGINIA AT VIRGINIA TECH (ACC).  This is a rivalry game that has given the Hoos fits on the road in recent years.  It’s also the kind of game that VA Tech really needs for their resume as much as they want it for bragging rights.  Their resume really needs some work.

-MIAMI FL AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  The Canes shouldn’t have too much trouble taking care of a Georgia Tech team that currently resembles a dumpster fire.

-NC STATE AT NOTRE DAME (ACC).  The Irish just got the news that they’ll be without Bonzie Colson for the next couple of months.  They went from being a top five team just a few weeks ago to being in a very desperate situation now where they’ll have to hang on for dear life just to land inside the bubble.  NC State needs some big wins as well.

-ILLINOIS AT MINNESOTA (Big Ten).  Illinois has improved as the year has progressed, but they still have a long way to go.  Minney still has a solid record at 12-3, but haven’t looked quite as impressive as we initially thought and it’s important that they’re able to hold serve in games like this.

-MISSOURI AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  Mizzou is off to a great start, but will really be tested on the road tonight against a South Carolina team that has played well for most of the year and appears to be getting better, but still has a lot of work to do before we can declare them a solid tournament team.

-NEW MEXICO AT BOISE STATE (Mountain West).  This is a very good Boise State team and they should be just fine if they’re able to avoid stubbing their toes in games like this.  Having said that, conference play will give them a lot of games like this.

-FRESNO STATE AT UTAH STATE (Mountain West).  Fresno State is on the outside looking in and will need a very strong showing the rest of the way if they want to land on the right side of the bubble.

-WYOMING AT NEVADA (Mountain West).  Nevada appears to be the strongest team in the Mountain West and could be dangerous come March.

-UNLV AT SAN JOSE STATE (Mountain West).  UNLV is much improved, but they still have a lot of catching up to do.  Still, it’s certainly not impossible for them to thunder through conference play and end up making The Dance.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: South Dakota State at North Dakota State

South Dakota State at North Dakota State, 8:00 PM Eastern, MidcoSN/espn3

For the past six seasons only two teams from the Summit League have represented the conference in the NCAA Tournament.  In 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2017 that team was the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State.  In 2014 and 2015 it was it was Bison of North Dakota State.  These two teams have dominated the league in recent years and tonight they will be meeting in the first of two regular season matchups — and even more importantly, in the game we have designated the Under the Radar Game of the Day.

South Dakota State enters tonight’s game at 12-5 overall and ranked in the top 100 by KenPom.  Their wins include a victory over Iowa in the Cayman Islands Classic.  Mike Daum has been a dominant force for the ‘rabbits so far this year, including an amazing stat line two weeks ago in a win over Drake: 35 points and 14 rebounds.  He is a legitimate 30 point/10 rebound threat every single night, and when he gets some helps from teammates like David Jenkins and Reed Tellinghuisen, can make this a very tough and very dangerous team.  Although the Jackrabbits are not an at-large bid candidate, if they make it to the Big Dance, they are going to be a very scary matchup in the first round.

One team that will be trying to keep the Jackrabbits out of the NCAA Tournament, and take that spot themselves, is the North Dakota State Bison.  The Bison enter tonight’s contest at only 8-6 with a KenPom rating of 142, though they have won 5 of their last 6 games with the sole loss coming at Arizona.  The Bison feature a more balanced scoring attack, as four players were in double figures in a win on December 21 over UNC-Wilmington.  The Bison will need a strong team effort tonight if they want to hold serve on their home court and send notice that they intend to be a factor in this year’s conference race.

Bracket Projection: Tuesday, January 2nd

For today’s UTR Game of the Day between Vermont and Harvard from Chad Sherwood – CLICK HERE

For Jon Teitel’s Midseason Awards – CLICK HERE

Two days ago, our colleague Jon Teitel made his first bracket projection of the season – you can click HERE to view his picks. This bracket is his best guess as to what the selection committee would decide as of this current checkpoint.

For this article, John Stalica will making his own bracket projection (aka the Hoops HD Staff Bracket) as he fills in for David Griggs this week. Here is the bracket below: (through games played on 1/1/18)

NOTES FROM JOHN

– This is a rare year where no team in Division I play enters the new calendar year undefeated. The last three teams (Villanova, TCU and Arizona State) all lost tough road games in conference play.

– One of the biggest movers in recent weeks has been the Oklahoma Sooners. They already had nice wins at Wichita State and against USC on a “neutral” court in LA, and they were responsible for ending TCU’s perfect start to the season. An argument could be made that they could even be a 1-seed, and they would undoubtedly be if not for their only loss against Arkansas back in the PK-80 in November.

– Exempt tournament season is starting to look anomalous not just for Arizona, but also for Purdue and even SMU as both teams have started to rebound nicely going into conference tournament play. Unfortunately, teams like Northern Iowa and Western Kentucky have fallen off the path in recent weeks and will need to stockpile wins in conference play just to get back into automatic bid status for these brackets.

– As of this checkpoint, I believe that teams like Nevada and New Mexico State are good enough to be in the NCAA Tournament even without benefit of an automatic bid. Saint Mary’s is back in my field above the First Four for now, mainly because they a) got a much needed win at BYU and b) other teams around the bubble have not stood head and shoulders above the Gaels.

– St. John’s has stumbled to open the Big East, but it should be noted that they are currently without two of their best players in Shamorie Ponds and Marcus Lovett. The Johnnies were NCAA Tournament-caliber with them in the lineup, but you cannot convince me that they are without those 2 guys playing.

First 4 teams out: Boston College, Washington, Notre Dame, Providence

Others considered: Marquette, Baylor, Maryland, Central Florida

COMMENTS FROM DAVID

-I’d like to thank John for stepping up and doing this bracket.  I was busy sorting out my bail and didn’t have time to do it today.

-The first thing I’d like to say is that the #10 seeds in the East and West Regions should absolutely be switched.  For that matter, the #7s in the Midwest and South should also be flopped.

-I’m a little shocked that Stalica doesn’t like Auburn a little more than he does.  They only have one loss, and although nothing is hugely impressive, they do have enough decent stuff on there to where I think it adds up to them being better than a #12.  It will be interesting to see what they do as they begin conference play.

-I agree with him on Oklahoma.  They’re not on the #1 line now, but they’re starting to put together the type of resume that a #1 seed would have.  They’ve already got the true win against a potential protected seed with their win at TCU, and although they didn’t blow out the Horned Frogs, they didn’t really sweat them out either.  They may be the best team that I’ve seen out of the Big 12 so far.

-I’ve liked this Arkansas team all year long, but WOW!!!  The #3 line??  I guess Stalica likes them even more than I do.
